Jude Schimmel invited to Dallas WNBA tryout camp -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WILL THERE BE A BOOK ABOUT THIS?

If you are unfamiliar with the Dallas Wings WNBA franchise...don't beat yourself up over it. It is their first year of existence in the Lone Star state. Previously known as the Tulsa Shock and the Detroit Shock prior to that...they've re-landed in a community that has taken a great initial interest in them and provides a in-state rival now for San Antonio.

The highly contested move (at least for the Tulsa folks) comes after they had their first over .500 record in the Tulsa portion of the franchise history in 2015. They also made the WNBA playoffs. An injury to Diggins slowed them down considerably...but they were showing signs of finally being competitive.

They'll play in the beautiful University of Texas-Arlington College Park Center and former Louisville point guard Jude Schimmel will attend the tryouts beginning April 23rd.

Schimmel faces a tough test in trying to make a roster that has Skylar Diggins and Odyssey Sims at starting guards with back ups Brianna Kiesel and Brittany Hrynko.

A WNBA squad will normally bring in 18-20 players to compete for the 10-11 spots available on the roster...the majority of these either from last year's team or with previous WNBA or European experience.

Schimmel was a four year player for UofL and complied these stats as a Card:

Career Rankings
10th in assists with 392
7th in steals with 221
Tied for 9th in games played with 135
Tied for 1st in NCAA Tournament games played with 15

A tough challenge for Shoni's sister...no doubt. One wonders if there might be a possible book in the future on the experience?

Don't forget today is national banana day. Our staff chimps are going ga-ga over this...you can be assured. What's your favorite banana consumption style? Right out of the peel? In a smoothie or shake? Banana pancakes? Are bananas foster or a banana creme pie your style? We're big favorites of banana pudding and banana bread here at CARDINAL COUPLE and if you've never had an Elvis-style banana and peanut butter sandwich, you're missing out.

We're going bananas here at the Couple today. We hope your Wednesday a"peels" to you as well...

Sunday Cardinal Couple -- New look Dream down Tulsa

SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Angel, Atlanta start WNBA season with win

-Amashi Ali-Kendall qualifies for NCAA meet

-Softball Super Regional unkind to Cats

-Unruly Julie?

Finally...some hoops to hold us over until the UofL WBB squad gets back in action...

The "new look" Atlanta Dream looked very good in an opening season win over Tulsa last night 98-81 in Atlanta. Angel McCoughtry and company spoiled Skylar Diggins debut in the WNBA by using a 21-6 run late in the first quarter to shock the Shock. The Fred Williams era as Atlanta skipper is off to a good start.

This is a different looking team than the 2012 Dream who sputtered in the 2012 playoff against Indiana after making it to the WNBA league finals in 2010 and 2011.

Yes, there are some returnees you'll remember and recognize. Angel McCoughtry, of course...along with veteran front liners Sancho Lyttle and Erika de Souza. Tiffany Hayes, the high scoring UConn guard.

After that, it's a shakeup of new talent. Three rookies on this year's squad...Anne Marie Armstrong (Georgia) Alex Bentley (Penn State) and Courtney Clements ( San Diego State) are guards that will be depended on to feed the scoring machines Hayes, DeSouza, Lyttle and Angel. Jasmine Thomas and Armintie (Price) Henderson will also dish the assists.

The Dream is heavily guard-oriented under Coach Fred...with only three front-liners...DeSouza, Lyttle and nine year veteran Le'Coe Willingham (Auburn).

Angel likes what she sees.

"It looked like we've been here with everybody for a while. We got some new additions and they fit right in. I was very proud of how the girls played. It was very good chemistry today, and the thing is...we can still get better. I'm looking for a great season."

Angel had 16 points in the win. Tiffany Hayes led all scorers with 21 and Sancho Lyttle added 18.

Despite a rallying 28-19 run by Tulsa in the second quarter to make it close...the Dream scored 12 points off 10 Tulsa turnovers in the third quarter while pushing the lead to double digits...where it remained the rest of the game.

Atlanta will do well, we predict, under Williams...as long as he can keep the talent happy...something the former head coach of Atlanta, Marynell Meadors, failed to accomplish.

So far, Angel is on board.

"It's early in the season. There are going to be some things like that (Tulsa's run) but I was very pleased with what I saw today.

Keep the talent happy, Fred. So far, so good...

><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Louisville thrower Amashi Ali-Kendall finished third in the shot put at a premilinary meet in Greensboro, NC for the NCAA Championships that will be held in Eugene, OR next month.

Her toss of 54' 5" was good enough to qualify for the Championships. It'll be the senior's first appearance in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She came in second in the BIG EAST Championships earlier this month and did participate in the NCAA Indoor Championships last year.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

We're still following the Softball Super Regionals...even though Louisville isn't a participant. The state's only school in the Round of 16...Kentucky...took a 5-4 loss to Arizona State last night in Tempe. Four home runs for UK in the loss. They trail 1-0 in the best of three series.

Other winners and losers:

Oklahoma 8 - Texas A&M 0 (Oklahoma advances to WCWS)
Michigan 2 - Louisiana-Lafayette 1 (UM moves on 2-1)
Texas 3 - Fla. State 2 (Texas leads 1-0 in Super Regional)
Nebraska 5 - Oregon 2 (Huskies win at Eugene, lead 1-0)
Washington 1 - Missouri 0 ( UW headed to WCWS)
Tennessee 5 - Alabama 3 (Vols earn a berth in Okla.City)
Florida 4 - UAB 3 (Gators go up 1-0)

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

It didn't take long for the muckrakers and sensational slimeballs to go after new Rutgers AD Julie Hermann. They're dragging out Hermann's departure from Tennessee in the swipe below:

HERMANN ABUSIVE?

Digging back 16 years in the past to try and slam one of five women Athletic Directors in Division I NCAA Sports is a cheap and tawdry attempt by Fox Sports and Tim Pernetti loyalists to heap more wood on the raging fire that is Rutgers Athletics.

I stepped on an ant last week. Quite by mistake. It's a wonder I haven't been brought up on animal abuse and cruelity charges by some dirtball columnist out there.

Did I do anything I regret 16 years ago? Probably. Renewing football tickets for Ron Cooper's final year at UofL comes to mind. That was abuse...much more than what Hermann allegedly did.

Sometimes, I'm ashamed to be in this profession of writer and columnist. We have some real jerks and scum-buckets in our midst. Don Henley nailed it right on the head years ago with his song "Dirty Laundry".

DON HENLEY'S "DIRTY LAUNDRY".

What was that old bible quote about 'ye free of sin casting the first stone'?

Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- Softball tops 'Toppers 7-2

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Ruckenbrod, Keller, Kiyohara key Cardinal 7-2 win

-Lacrosse heads to the Motor City for Detroit match

- Notre Dame 61 - UConn 59 BIG EAST FINAL.

-Whatever happened to ????

Louisville Softball improved their season record to 21-3 Tuesday with a 7-2 win over Western Kentucky Tuesday at Ulmer Stadium. Stepping up with key performances for the Cards were Maggie Ruckenbrod (three hits and one of them a home run), Hannah Kiyohara (three hits and two RBI's) and Katie Keller (homer and triple).

Louisville got on the board in the bottom of the first with Keller's blast over the left field fence, her seventh of the year. Alicja Wolny singled and scored on a Kiyohara single to lead 2-0.

The Cards increased the advantage to 4-0 in the third. Ruckenbrod drew a walk and scored on a Kiyohara double. Jennifer Esteban singled with two outs to score Kiyohara.

Make it 5-0 Cards after the fourth. Keller's triple off the right field fence started the inning and Jordan Trimble hit a fly to center to score KK.

After a two-run top of the fifth for the Toppers, Louisville finished the scoring when Wolny reached on a fielder's choice and Ruckenbrod pounded her second base-clearer of the year over the left field fence. 7-2. Cards win! Cards win!

Caralisa Connell went seven innings for her 13th win of the year...striking out five and allowing just three hits.

The Cards return to action Friday in the Louisville Softball Classic. Two games Friday, one on Sunday and one on Monday.

Lacrosse searches for their sixth win of the season today when they engage Detroit at 2 p.m. Louisville is coming off a 23-1 victory over Presbyterian Saturday. The Titans (1-5) lost to Niagara in overtime last Thursday.

Louisville has the leading goals-per-game performer in the BIG EAST with Nikki Boltja (4.0). The cross and net Cards are fifth in the nation in scoring, scoring margin and seventh in draw controls.

Looks like an easy afternoon for Kellie Young and the crew against the Atlantic Sun opponent. Detroit head coach Laura Maness was selected National Lacrosse Conference Coach of the Year in 2011.

It's 2013. Cards win by as many as they want with Young getting the backups some valuable game experience in the second half...

MArkie MArk, a huge UConn fan, is sad that the Huskies
fell in the tournament. Cheer up, bro! U still headed to
the Dance!
A very exciting finish in the BIG EAST Championship game Tuesday night! Skylar Diggins stole an errant Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis pass, drove the length of the court and found Natalie Achonwa under the basket and for a score with a second to go...giving ND the 61-59 win over Geno's Huskies.

Beating a quality opponent three times in one season no small feat. Hats off to the Irish and let the pre-St. Patrick's Day Party commence.

Hats off, also, to CURTIS FRANKLIN, who was one of three Cardinal Couple Pick 'Em contestants to get all 14 games correct. His entry preceded CARDINAL COUPLE'S Sonja's picks by eight hours and 24 hours before also-undefeated Nick B....so he wins the $25 Chili's gift card.

Billy Ray dances to the new that Curtis has
won the CARDINAL COUPLE Pick 'Em!
Curtis, a regular reader and commenter here at the COUPLE, lives in Southern Indiana and works for a grocery store...in case you're looking for a free meal. He's a huge Cardinal sports fan in general and also roots for Floyd Central High School and the Atlanta Dream. Angel is his favorite all-time Lady Cards WBB player and his current favorite Card is Bria Smith...

Congrats, Curtis! I'll have the loaded potato soup and a burger!

The Horizon League has announced their All-Horizon League honors and junior RACHEL STORY, of the UIC Flames, has made the All-Newcomer team.

Asia, Shoni and LaToya Johnson were all teammates
of Rachel's at UofL.
Remember Rachel? She was a Card for two years from 2009-11 before transferring to University of Illinois-Chicago and sitting out a season.

She averaged 15.6 ppg and was sixth overall in the league. She had eleven 20 point performances...getting six of them in the Flames last nine games. Her 451 points so far this year and 168 made field goals rank 11th on UIC's single season leaderboard.

Glad to see the ex-Card doing so well. The guard who came out of Milwaukee is playing a little closer to home now and doing well.

(Thanks to reader Kenny S. for the find on Rachel Story.)

Also, the Kentucky High School Girls Sweet Sixteen Tournament starts today in Bowling Green. Good luck to all the contestants. Marion County goes in undefeated and the odds on favorite to win the events.

Notre Dame Post Mortem Report

.

TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( CARDINAL COUPLE Columnist Sandy Walker provides today's report on the homicide in South Bend last night. )

The washing machine broke so while CoCo and her repair team spends time trying to determine what parts to order...the Cardinal Couple Corporate Office gave Sandy the substitute assignment of reporting on the Notre Dame game post mortem instead of the week off.   After last night’s game I think a trip to the coin laundry to sanitize last night’s game uniforms is in order as it appears that the accumulation of team injuries have finally caught up with Walz's women.
As Cardinal broadcaster Adrienne Johnson said, the freshly minted # 10 nationally ranked Louisville got a “good butt-whipping” from #2 ranked Notre Dame.  The Monday night ESPN2 featured contest initially showed a slight promise of a true competition but it was not to be as this being the 13th meeting between these teams was truly a bad sign.
To be successful, Louisville as a team, needed to take play with confidence, care of the ball, show aggression on defense without fouling and to control the glass.  The Cards did have what could be considered season best play from a few individuals for short-lived periods of time.  Otherwise, as a whole, 1 out of 4 of these goals would have been an improvement over what occurred.  Pick a statistic, any statistic.   No real additional explanations are needed.

                      Notre Dame          Louisville
Turnovers          19                            19
Rebounds          44                             23
Free Throws    19/26  for 73%             3/7 for 43%
Steals             11                               9
Field Goals     34/60  for 57%            27/62 for 44%
Team Fouls            8                        18
Assists                  25                        17
Basketball IQ       100 %                     Audit

Points               93                    64

Yes, there were brief periods of good play by a few where the pace was definitely increased upon Jude’s entry into the game. Her poised 33 minutes of play was shown by her total of 2 turnovers and 8 points.   Bria Smith, who had 18 points (10 in the first half) 4 rebounds and 5 steals was everywhere and played with a solid aggression which caught the attention of everyone.  The addition of Antonita Slaughter’s 16 points along with Shoni’s 13 just were not enough.  There was a brief 8-2 run by the cards at 9:20 in the first half which brought UofL to within 5 with the ball and a score of 17-22.  Louisville moved into the half time break still with a breath of life remaining as the 45-35 score gave us hope of a strong first 5 minutes of play which might turn things around.
Their 2nd half brief run at 17:44 which brought them within 7 at 47-40 could not be sustained as in only 2 additional minutes of play the spread had increased to 17 as the Cards' 40 was met by Notre Dame’s 57. All American and top 4 national player Skylar Diggins, who finished with 21 points, 7 assists and 4 steals pretty much schooled Louisville in what complete game play looked like.
In his post game interview Jeff pretty much summed the game up by saying the Cards just did not play tough enough either physically or mentally.  To win against a team like Notre Dame, play must more closely resemble football than chess.
Fortunately, the Cards have a few BIG EAST games left from which to position themselves for the upcoming end of season tournament.  The first opportunity for the women to regroup is this Sunday’s 1:30 game at the KFC YUM! Center when they have the opportunity to reverse their earlier misfortunes against DePaul.  Yes, the game is being shown on ESPNU but the women need your presence at the game, not on your recliner.

Last night’s ND crowd at the sold-out South Bend game absolutely contributed to the chaos which rained down upon our team.  It is time to return the favor as well as to show the nation what a Louisville women’s basketball crowd looks like.   UofL's recent slippage to number 3 in the nation for attendance is just not acceptable and ...now more than ever, this team needs us.

Sandy

Editor's Comments...So, let's go to South Bend, fail to block out, rebound or defend and see how that does. And, that pretty well sums up the final 17 minutes of last night's trouncing of the Louisville WBB squad by Skylar, Natalie and the other Muffet marauders. Sonja couldn't understand why Shoni was sitting when the Irish were pulling away. I explained to her that "matador defense" went out of style a few years ago. For a team that had only been allowing 53.1 points per game, the Cards looked like a squad that didn't realize it's OK to guard someone when they drive the lane with the basketball. It's become a dangerous sequence this season...go on the road, play a quality opponent, get your lunch taken from you.

Fortunately, the Cards finish the regular season with three in the KFC YUM! Center and only two in hostile territory...two dangerous ones, though, in Syracuse and Villanova. Walz mentioned in the post-game eulogy last night that he hoped all the television sets in Louisville were out of order last night. Something is broken, coach...but it isn't the cable service. The Wizard of Oz's Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion could have done a better job containing UND's front line last night. Put Toto and Jude out there, and you may keep the Wicked Witches of the West under 80...

The Cards probably looked the best when it was four guards and Nita on the court. Anyone know of any 6'0" and under leagues that these five could sign up for?

Issuing this amber alert. The post position at UofL has gone missing. If seen, return to the basketball offices on the 2nd floor of the S.A.C. on campus, please.

20-5 is a great record. This team has overcome injuries and played with heart and courage many times this year. Last night was a clunker. It happens. These next five are all winnable. They are also, potentially...all losable as well, except for Seton Hall. A 25-5 regular-season record would be outstanding. 21-9 would be OK, but may not be 4th seed NCAA Tournament or BIG EAST Tournament worthy.

Whatcha got left, Lady Cards?

Monday Cardinal Couple -- Will Irish Eyes be Crying?

.

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

GAME REPORT

It was a smackdown in South Bend...Notre Dame taking a 10-point halftime lead and expanding it to a 93-64 whipping of the Lady Cards Monday night.

As Coach Walz mentioned in the post-game, if you don't rebound, defend or play with toughness...you're not going to win. All three were missing tonight.

We'll have the post-mortem in the Tuesday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE.

- Cards, Irish battle tonight in WBB

(Quentin Voigt brings us his views on the UND v. UofL matchup tonight at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Paulie follows with comments. Should be a good one!)

The owner of the impish smile, patrolling the sidelines of a game has the ideal name befitting the coach of the Fighting Irish. Although I've never had the chance to interview the legend, Muffet McGraw has never left the top spot on coaches I'd like to do an interview with. The 2001 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Trophy, runner-up last year, second in all-time wins and a perfect 100% graduation rate in 26 years at South Bend. I could go on and on.

To say she's tough under the lacquered finish requires hyperbole. Her knowledge of the game and will to win have been put hand-in-hand with the yearly battles with Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma. History-making battles.

We're lucky to have her on the sidelines. Coming out of a recruiting trip on September 11, 2001...she was slated to be on one of the airplanes that left Boston and ultimately ended up being hijacked into one of the World Trade Center towers.

She missed that flight. Fate? Divine providence? Sometimes, there are things that happen for a reason.

Her main tour-de-force is Skylar Diggins. All-Everything, Diggins averages 15.8 ppg and is the best guard in the BIG EAST, if not the nation. Natalie Achonwa grabs 9.1 rpg a contest for an Irish squad that rebounds very well. Notre Dame averages 19.6 assists a contest, 79.9 points, has 259 steals and 108 blocked shots. Jewel Loyd is a three-point threat.

I'm looking forward to watching and enjoying this one regardless of the outcome.

-Quentin Voigt

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

An epic battle tonight in many aspects. There are questions, yes...so many questions. At least from the fans that are anticipating this matchup. Can the three-headed defensive trio of Bria, Jude and Shelby slow down the "Digs"? Who will counteract Achonwa on the glass? Can the Cards go on the road, in a hostile environment and get a signature win? What color shirt will Jeff Walz wear?

To answer these, one by one...Probably not, nobody, doubtful and white with long sleeves.

So, how do you beat a team that has won 17 straight this season, is 22-1 and is fourth in the nation in scoring margin, third in scoring offense, second in the Associated Press Poll and has lost only once in seven games in the Jeff Walz era at UofL?

You take the air out of the basketball.

You borrow the Villanova vs. Notre Dame game film from Harry Perretta and study it like you're cramming for a mid-term sociology exam. Better yet, you buy the extended DVD version on Blue-Ray which shows how South Florida took them to overtime in a three-point loss and how Connecticut came in and downed them by one at the Joyce Center.

You hope Shoni doesn't have a 3 for 19 night, that Sara can stay out of early foul trouble and Nita shows the consistency she's displayed all season.

The Irish will come at you with unrelenting, hurricane force winds. Diggins, Loyd, McBride, Achonwa, Wright.

Any of these Irish would start anywhere in the nation and all five of them are capable of dropping 20 on you as easy as a chimp peels a banana.

You must weather the storm, create a disturbance of your own and hit free throws and layups (if you get any.)

You walk in with confidence. You are on a business trip. You don't get caught up in the 9,000 or so that will be cheering against you. You remained focused and composed. And...you pray.

The Irish came into the KFC YUM! Center last year and broke open a close first half with a 68-52 win. Gone are Peters, Novosel and Mallory, who accounted for 30 of those points...but the Cards shot a paltry 31% in that contest and went 2-16 from beyond the arc.

Louisville's last win over UND came during the magical 2008-09 season when they knocked off the Irish 71-66 in South Bend.

The whole women's basketball world will be watching tonight, courtesy of the four letter network's deuce channel providing the broadcast. Beth Mowins, who we like here at C.C., has the call. If Bonita Spence shows up as a ref on the court...I'm heading to Mulligans to drown my sorrows. If it's Dee Kanter, I'll send her an extra whistle via rush courier...

Are you ready, Lady Cards?

-Paulie

( We'll have a summation of the results after the contest here at CARDINAL COUPLE tonight and Sandy Walker takes a holiday from the laundry and will have a full-game report in the Tuesday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE. Go Cards! )

BIG EAST Media Days offer few surprises for WBB

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Cards picked 3rd in preseason coaches poll

- Skylar Diggins chosen Preseason player of the year. Shoni unanimous pick for first team.

- Cards on the mend

Connecticut gets 12 out of 15 first place votes to repeat as regular-season champ.

The coaches of the BIG EAST have spoken and come up with a very predictable preseason prediction of how they think the BIG EAST WBB teams will finish the 2012-13 season.

UConn, with 12 of the 15 first place votes, is picked to repeat as the regular season champs. Notre Dame got the other three first place votes in the poll...where coaches weren't allowed to vote for their own squads for first.

Louisville finished third in the contest, followed by St. John's. The Cards enter the season after finishing up last year bowing out to Maryland in second round NCAA Tournament action. The entire results are below:

1. Connecticut  194 (points)         9. USF  97
2. Notre Dame  182                    10. Villanova  78
3. Louisville  167                         11. Marquette  75
4. St. John's  144                        12. Cincinnati  61
5. Rutgers 138                            13. Pittsburgh  31
6. DePaul  127                            13. Seton Hall  31
7. Syracuse  105                         15. Providence 25
8. Georgetown  104

Shoni an unanimous pick for BIG EAST First Team

Another predictable was the naming of Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins as the Preseason Player of the Year, an honor she was also named to last season. Diggins averaged 17.1 points last year for the Irish.

Shoni Schimmel was named to the BIG EAST First team, one of five players unanimously picked for the squad. She was the only Cardinal selected for the honor, although Monique Reid did get honorable mention selection. The others on the First Team:

Stefanie Dolson, Connecticut, Jr., C
Bria Hartley, Connecticut, Jr., G
Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Connecticut, So., F
Anna Martin, DePaul, Sr., G
Sugar Rodgers, Georgetown, Sr., G
Shoni Schimmel, Louisville, Jr., G
Skylar Diggins, Notre Dame, Sr., G
Monique Oliver, Rutgers, Sr., F/C
Nadirah McKenith, St. John's, Sr., G
Shennika Smith, St. John's, Sr., G
Kayla Alexander, Syracuse, Sr., C

Louisville's Schimmel was a first-team All-BIG EAST selection at the end of last year and led Louisville with 14.3 ppg and 4.7 assists. Schimmel is also on the Wade Watch list as one of the top 25 players in DI womens' college basketball.

Louisville begins action on Oct., 31st. with an exhibition game against Eckerd College.

Walz laments preseason injuries

If the women's basketball locker room in Cardinal Arena resembles a M*A*S*H unit, it's because five Lady Cards are currently in various stage of rehab and healing from injuries.

Tia Gibbs is still a couple of weeks away from contact...recovering from the shoulder injury and hip trouble that kept her out of the 2011-12 season.

Monique Reid is practicing but not going at full speed yet as she continues to heal from the knee injury that sidelined her last season after nine games.

Asia Taylor will be out until mid-December. She's on the mend from a torn hip labrum suffered over the summer.

Shawnta Dyer will be out for a week or so...sidelined because of a sports hernia.

Cortnee Walton should be back next week, currently hobbled with a foot stress reaction.

Maybe  the Cards should re-design their practice jerseys to display the A.M.A. insignia instead of the Cardinal Bird...

The good news in the injury list is that none of these are being listed as career-ending injuries. Throughout a season, every team in Division I WBB is going to have their share of dings, dents and down-time for players. It's the nature of the game. Hopefully, Louisville is getting theirs out of the way early and will not be plagued with them as the team rolls into BIG EAST and tournament play.

Lady Cards not quite in the BIG EAST elite

.
TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- The Watson report -- Lady Cards still climbing the BIG EAST ladder.

(David Watson sends us his impressions on the Notre Dame game. As usual, he's going to upset a few of you and others will e-mail us calling him a stinking genius. Either way, he's never boring.)

I watched the UofL vs. Notre Dame women's basketball game yesterday with excited interest. Another chance to prove their mettle against a quality opponent. #4 Notre Dame. A big crowd in the KFC YUM! Center at 2 p.m. on a Monday afternoon. 13,000 + -- which is remarkable, amazing and a tribute to the fervent and fanatical fan base that follow these girls.

I originally planned to do a TV viewing of this contest. But, as Sunday night drew to a close, I made the decision to be there. My wife was encouraging, 2 out of my 3 children signed on board for the trip and off we went Monday mid-morning -- making sure we had time to hit our favorite downtown pizza parlor before the contest. (Paul won't let me mention the establishment's name on here anymore. He says it's free advertising for them. It's his site -- so I comply.)

By the time we got inside the KFC YUM! Center and settled into our end zone seats -- not far from a good sized group of Notre Dame fans -- the crowd was rocking and pep band blaring.

My daughter and I talked about watching her favorite player, Skylar Diggins. My son talked about the LadyBirds. Yes, he's reached that age.

We saw Mo Reid and Tia Gibbs chatting, autographing and generally enjoying the atmosphere. I sent Paul a text, inquiring as to his gameday whereabouts. I got a terse reply:

Guarding the pep band. Behind the cheerleaders. On the end of the row, making sure Muffet gets to the locker room safely.

Then, it began.

It seemed like eternity before Asia Taylor got the Lady Cards on the scoreboard. And, then Walz pulled her from the game. Shoni was firing blanks, McBride and Mallory couldn't miss -- but the Cards were hanging tough. Novosel hadn't arrived at the arena yet -- some imposter in her uniform was having a rough time of it. The guy in front of us was convinced that Notre Dame was fouling every time they went on defense. I didn't know the BIG EAST had a training policy for future referees that could be completed from the stands.

The first half came to a close and hope still existed. I'm not sure who Walz got to replace Nita Slaughter a few weeks ago but I love the new version. She's BIG EAST tough and doesn't back down. Down by 3, the crowd cheering every possesion and Novosel still not off the bus and in the arena.

After a $18 trip to the concession stand and returning with nothing substantial, I limped back to the seats and the second half began. Novosel must have found a back entrance and snuck in the arena. The Louisville players were trying way too hard to avoid any eye-contact with Shoni and letting her dribble, drive, shoot and operate the shot clock. Stem cell research being what it is -- someone needs to get in the UofL science labs and create four or five of her pronto.

It began to get away from the Lady Cards. Still hopeful, but realizing that Notre Dame was not intimidated by the crowd or the Cardinal defense.

Peters had her swagger back. So did Diggins. Double digits overtook the Lady Cards and Walz was pleading with his charges to play solid defense and hit some shots. At least I think that was what he was saying.

What did we learn from the 68-52 Notre Dame win?

1) Louisville is still a member of the not-ready-for-prime time BIG EAST elite. Granted, the girls are trying as hard as they can, there are flashes of brilliance and Schimmel is a top 5 BIG EAST guard -- even when the shots won't fall. Watching the execution of the Irish offense, though --especially in the second half -- was a pleasure. Players knowing where to be, responding to court actions and knocking down clutch shots. Something the Lady Cards could be with a little more practice, experience and paitence.

2) This Louisville squad will be amazing next year. Add Monique Reid and Tia Gibbs back to four current starters, throw in some great bench role players, three talented new additions, a ton of experience and maturity for the whole team and -- voila! -- you have a legitimate top 10, Final Four, Doris Burke and Kara Lawson raving type of team.

3) When Shoni's off --she's really off. It's the shooter's code. You keep putting them up. They're going to fall eventually.

It's Tuesday afternoon. I hope they're starting to go through the net, because she got impeached on President's Day.

What will the final two regular season games and tournaments yield for the second youngest team in the BIG EAST? I see them at 9-7 going into the BIG EAST Tournament. A loss to DePaul Saturday in The Bucket and a closer than expected road win at Seton Hall. A #8 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament...which means they'll get a one day bye and then have to face the winner of #9 vs. #16. Rugters or DePaul maybe? They bow out after one game and wait to see where the selection committee places them in the BIG DANCE. I'll venture a guess and say a #7 seed. They aren't the #14 best team in the nation, even if they sweep DePaul, Seton Hall and get to the finals of the BIG EAST Tournament.

But, what do I know?

And, then -- it's the waiting game. Knowing those fuddy-duddy's on the selection committee, they'll send the Cards to Spokane again. Or Bangkok or Prussia. Can't have flocks of Cardinal fans invading a home court favorite like Xavier was last year and upsetting the mortal lock, can we?

It's hard to believe this regular season is almost over. Seems like yesterday we were reading accounts about the Lady Cards getting ready for their pre-season Oregon and Canada trip. It's been way too much fun and despite the setbacks and heartbreaks -- another good season for Walz's Warriors.

Someday they'll breath the rarefied air of the BIG EAST Top Four and return to NCAA Final Four Madness again.

It's just isn't going to happen this March.

( David Watson made the trip to St. Louis for the Cards Final Four appearance. How he got past border security to get in Missouri and back out still mystifies us...)

Notre Dame expanded upon a three point halftime lead to defeat Louisville 68-52 in the KFC YUM! Center Monday afternoon in front of 13054 fans. Junior Skylar Diggins had 21 points for the #4 ranked Irish...including 11-12 shooting from the free throw line.

For Louisville, Antonita Slaughter contributed six points each half to lead the Cards with 12 points. Rough afternoon of shooting for Louisville against the Irish defense -- going 18-57 for 31.6% from the floor and 2-16 from trifecta range. The Irish did a number of Shoni, in particular -- 3-16 from the floor and 1-8 from the distance.

The Irish jumped out to a early lead against the LADY CARDS and were up 5-0 before Asia Taylor connected in the paint with a jumper at the 17:24 mark. After a Brittany Mallory turnover, Becky Burke tied it with a three to even it at 5-5. The Irish responded with a 7-0 run, though and the Cards didn't get on the board again until Bria Smith knocked down a jumper with 14:27 on the clock to draw UofL within seven. Taylor got Louisville to a 12-9 deficit with a layup and got the Cards the ball back after drawing a charge on Kayla McBride....but the Cards couldn't capitalize until Nita Slaughter tossed in a short jumper to make it 15-11.

It was the start of a mini-run for Walz's crew -- culminating in a 15-15 tie after another Slaughter score and two Shawnta Dyer free throws with 10:03 remaining in the first half. It was 17-17 when Shoni got two free throws to fall at the 7:48 mark...her first two and only points of the first half.

Notre Dame fired back with back-to-back buckets from McBride and Skylar Diggins to go up 21-17 but Slaughter cashed in a couple for free throws to cut it back to two with 6:07 left. Devereaux Peters capitalized on a Slaughter turnover to score but Sara Hammond's basket in the paint off a slick assist from Shelby Harper drew Louisville closer at 23-21. Two Burke free throws with 2:55 on the clock kept Louisville within two and after a clutch three from sub Kaila Turner made it 28-23 Notre Dame, Bria Smith ended the first half scoring with a jumper from the paint at the 46 second mark to make it 28-25 Notre Dame.

Louisville was hanging close despite 0-7 shooting from Shoni and only 1-6 three point totals for the team. The Lady Cards were winning the rebounding battle 20-16 and had forced 12 Notre Dame turnovers.

Slaughter's six points led UofL scoring. Burke contributed five, Asia and Bria with four each and Shoni, Dyer and Hammond with two each to round out the first half Louisville scoring. Vails and Harper played but did not score. The Cards were shooting a pitiful 28.6%, due to Irish pressure and some wide open, missed attempts. Louisville did go 8-8 from the foul stripe in the first twenty.

Notre Dame had nine points from Diggins -- five of those from the charity stripe and McBride had two 3-pointers to give her six points. Louisville had held Irish star and Lexington, KY native to zero points on 0-4 shooting and just one rebound in 18 minutes.

The Cards needed to pick up the offensive production in the final twenty and continue to score on second chance attempts...they led Notre Dame 6-0 in that category in the first twenty.

Novosel got her first bucket of the game to begin the second half but Asia countered with a layup in the paint at the 19:12 mark. Defense ruled until Novosel score again to make it 32-27 and 17:36 on the clock. A Shoni jumper cut the Notre Dame lead back to three a minute later free throws from Peters and a McBride layup off a Novosel assist set it at 36-29 Irish and 16 minutes to go.

Hammond found Dyer for a score to return it to a five point ND lead...but two more free throws for Diggins off a Dyer foul and McBride's jumper gave the Irish a 40-31 lead and 14:20 left.

It was beginning to get away from the Cards and Louisville had been outscored 12-6 to begin the half.

Hammond tried to rally Louisville with a jumper that cut the Notre Dame lead to seven but the Irish countered with four straight points from Peters to go up 44-33 and 12:01 on the clock. Taylor capitalized on a basket and free throw to trim it to eight...but the Lady Cards would score only three points over the next four and one half minutes -- trailing 51-39 until Shoni sank her only three of the game with 7:17 remaining to draw Louisville within eight.

Slaughter's layup a minute later still had UofL down by nine and two Slaughter free throws made it 55-46 Notre Dame as the clocked worked its way to the five minute mark. McBride drove a serious nail in the coffin -- hitting a three to give UND a 58-46 lead. Smith's jumper cut it to ten...but Louisville would get no closer the rest of the way. The Irish outscored the Lady Cards 10-4 over the final 3:33  -- the Cards getting two free throws from Slaughter and a Shoni layup with a minute left to play.

Final 68-52 Notre Dame...in a game that was much closer than that for the first 37 minutes.

The Cards were led by Slaughter's 12 points...going 3-6 from the field and 6-6 from the foul line. Asia and Shoni had nine, Dyer seven, Smith six, Burke five and Hammond four to complete the Louisville scoring. No points for Vails or Harper in limited duty. Jude Schimmel did not play.

Notre Dame placed four in double figures. Diggins 21 led the Irish, followed by McBride's 15 (7-9 from the floor), Mallory's 13 and Peters with 10.

The Lady Cards won the rebounding battle 35-28.

Notre Dame outshot Louisville 48.9% (23-47) to 31.6% (18-57).
The Cards were 14-15 from the free throw line and Notre Dame 17-18. Notre Dame had 18 turnovers and the Cards 19 (Smith 7).

All in all, a hard-fought effort against a strong, veteran and talented Irish squad that features four seniors, two juniors and a freshman in their top seven rotation. A freshman that UofL didn't account for today in McBride.

Shooting killed the Lady Cards today. Part of it was the tough UND defense and part of it was just shots that wouldn't fall...especially for Shoni . The Irish got all 10 of their last points from Diggins, Novosel and Mallory...experienced and veteran guards. Louisville got only three shots up in the final 3:33...effectively killing any chance of a comeback...and had three turnovers in the same period of time.

Louisville (19-8, 8-6) returns to action on Saturday with a noon contest against DePaul. The Irish host USF next before ending the regular season at UConn.
