Field Hockey wins -- Volleyball and Soccer fall on Friday -- Saturday Cardinal Couple

STRATTON SENDS THE SOLE GOAL IN 1-0 WIN OVER CAL BEARS.

Senior Vic Stratton sent a penalty corner shot into the goal 10 minutes into the second half to give Field Hockey a 1-0 win against the California Bears yesterday in Davis, CA.

The Cards outshot Cal 11-4 and held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. For UofL goalie Ayeisha "Mac" McFerrin -- her second shut out performance in a row.

The stick swingers held back into action Sunday when they'll face tournament host UC Davis.

SOCCER FALLS AT UK 1-0

Tough loss for women's soccer at UK in a game that was delayed over an hour by weather conditions. Paige Brown takes the loss in between the pipes...UK scoring in the 58th minute.

Louisville held a 10-9 shot advantage and 6-3 edge on corners kicks. The Cats improve to 4-1 with the win and Louisville drops to 1-2-1.

MINNESOTA DEFEATS UofL VOLLEYBALL IN FIVE SETS

The Cards falling to the Gophers in the final 13-15 after leading by 4..

Cards started well with a 25-23 first game win...only to see the Gophers rock the 14-15 in the second game. Louisville fell in game three as well 20-25 to put them in a do-or die situation in the fourth.

Louisville responded with an exciting 28-26 win and jumped out to a 9-5 leadv in the fifth before the Gophers used size and height to take the match.

Erin Fairs with 22 kills for the Cards who face Wisconsin today.

Cardinal Couple Monday - Soccer Wraps Exhibition Play

(Worldwide here, filling in for Paulie as he and Sonja have their hands full dealing with some family issues.  Spare a moment to send some well wishes their way.)

Soccer Gets It Done Over IU

Soccer split their preseason games with a tight win over IU, 1-0 in play at Lynn Stadium.

Sophomore Alison Price got an assist from Casey Whitfield to head the ball into the net for the only score of the game against IU Sunday afternoon.  The win over IU pairs with the loss to NKU Wednesday evening to give the Cards a .500 record in their preseason exhibition games.

The play appeared to be fairly even between the teams, with several shots on goal for each, usually with pretty easy saves for the keepers, but Price was able to sneak one in on a crowded play in the box.  (Apologies for the vague stats, but as an exhibition game, no official stats were kept.)

IU seemed to have a slight edge in ball control, and much of the game was played on Louisville's side of the field, though the latter part of the first half saw that reversed some.  Louisville was able to play some counters down the field into IU territory and threaten several times for scores.  The coaches were visibly taking the opportunity to give some significant guidance and corrections in a game situation.  Goalkeeper Paige Brown did a fantastic job of keeping the IU attacks at bay.

While I'm not a soccer expert, I would say UofL could do better at clearing balls out of dangerous territory in front of their goal, as their clears seemed a bit clumsy at time.  Also, overall ball control still seems to be a little bit of an issue, both in maintaining possession in traffic as well as hitting targets of passes.

Overall, I see an improved team, but a team still with some challenges to overcome.

The Cards open their Women's Soccer season this Friday at 7:30 against Wright State at Lynn Stadium, now nick-named The Palace.  Early weather forecasts look good, with only a slight chance of rain, and what looks to be a very pleasant temperature.

Women's Soccer Cards scalped by Noles 6-0 -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

The fifth-ranked Florida State (9-1-0, 2-0-0 ACC) soccer
 team defeated Louisville 6-0 in Talahassee last night. (4-5-0, 1-1-0 ACC) 6-0 on Thursday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Cardinals
 The Cards were held to a season low with one shot in the match.
 Florida State had 21.

Florida State held most of the possession in the first half
fwhich paid off with a goal by Megan CampbellMegan Campbell in the 16th minute of play.  The Cardinal defense held tight and Cardinal keeper
Paige Brown collected four saves in the first half.

Florida State held a 10-0 shot advantage in the first half.
  They also held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
Could the Louisville defense keep the opportunistic FSU
offense out of the goal in the final
45 minutes and find a way to break through the iron curtain
 the Noles were representing with their
back four?

Sadly it didn't happen for Louisville

Cheyna Williams scored two goals in the first three
 minutes of the second half to break the game
 open for the Seminoles.  The Seminoles continued
 to dominate possession and control the clock
 throughout the second half.

 Brown finished with a season-high six saves.
 She needed 14 more.

A first test against one of the elite ACC women's
soccer teams and a tutorial on what it will
take to climb onto that top rung of the ladder.
 The Seminoles seemed a step quicker, were
organized in their offensive attack and had little
 trouble breaking up any Cardinal attempt
to move to the goal. We've said it many times
 this season and we'll repeat it again. This
is a very young squad Karen Ferguson Dayes
 coaches...with 12 freshman on the roster.

The question is...does Louisville learn and
improve from this slaughter on national television
or do they sink even further down as the stakes
 and the opponent level increases?

The Cardinals will continue road play at Miami
on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1:00 p.m.

          *                     *

Louisville Volleyball gets the ACC slate

 started tonight with a 7 p.m. match

against Boston College. The Eagles are

5-6 on the season. The Cards ran the

table in the AAC last year (18-0) but

the odds are astronomical that they can

do that in the tougher ACC.

Maya McClendon and Janelle Jenkins
lead Louisville in kills this season.

Tuesday Cardinal Couple -- Women's Soccer faces early opening tests

TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Women's Soccer faces early road tests

- Who was your UofL women's sports Player of the Year?

It isn't easy being UofL women's soccer head coach Karen Ferguson Dayes these days...

Beside preparing for the home season's opener against Ole Miss on Aug. 29th. as part of a opening stadium debut in Lynn Stadium...her squad faces two exhibition games on the road the the first two regular season games as the visiting squad also.

Soccer "kicks off" on 8/13 with the season opening exhibition in Knoxville against SEC power Tennessee. Three days later they head north to face BIG 10 foe Indiana for an exhibition match.

The regular season begins six days later at Wright State.

Two days later, the "kickin" Cards head to Champaign, IL. to take on the Fighting Illini.

It is a season that will test Louisville women's soccer...especially since scoring machines Charlyn Corral and Christine Exeter have graduated.

Stylish Casey Whitfield is one of the leading returning
scorers for Louisville women's soccer.
In fact, over half the goals scored by Louisville women's Soccer in 2013 have graduated...so to speak. Coach Karen will look to senior Angelika Uremovich...returning from a year off due to injury...Shannon Dennehey and Casey Whitfield to find the back of the net.

The Cards do return goalie Paige Brown to shore up a defense that also took some major hits due to graduation.

Louisville's 12-5-2 record and NCAA Tournament selection may be a hard feat to accomplish in 2014...to say the least.
The 7-1 AAC conference record will also be a major challenge to repeat in talent-laden ACC conference play.. .

Seven ACC schools were ranked in the top 25 at the end of the NCAA Tournament in 2013. Florida State lost to UCLA in the championship game. The Cards will go there on Sept. 25th.

This 1-2 scoring punch for the 2013 squad will be greatly missed.
10 ACC conference games  await in addition to the rival match against UK and two other in-state challenges from Morehead State University and NKU.

No official 2014 women's soccer roster has been released yet and CARDINAL COUPLE is still trying to get in for a pre-season interview with Coach Ferguson-Dayes.

Higher stakes, better opponents and challenging away games await in the next three months before ACC Tournament play starts on 11/7. A state of the art stadium to host 10 visitors as well.

A transition season in several aspects for women's soccer.

The challenge awaits.

```````````````````````````````````````````````````
We've posted a poll over on the Right Side of the Site asking you who was your UofL women's sports Player of the Year in the 2013-14 season.
It was tough to narrow it down to four players...and someone will undoubtedly gripe about us leaving their choice off the list...but we selected:
- Shoni Schimmel  (if you have to ask why...welcome back from your four year trip to Mars)
- Charlyn Corral (senior soccer star led UofL in goals)
- Nikki Boltja (lacrosse forward was the leading scorer)
- Catlin Welch (volleyball's best Libero ever )
Tuesday Cardinal Couple
TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
Tennis Doubles Team advances
Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine have been representing Louisville Tennis quite well downstream in Memphis.  The team was seeded 5th in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regionals hosted by Memphis.
Advancing against unseeded teams from Vandy, Ball State and Memphis, the due met up with the top seeded team in the tournament, Krisztine Kapitany and Mara Schmidt from Purdue in a Monday evening match and dispatched them easily in an 8-3 win.  The finals will be played today with a chance to play in the National Indoor Championship on the line.
Their competition will either be a team from UK or one from Memphis.  We here at the Cardinal Couple are spoiled by the prompt and informative updates from the Louisville Sports Information Directors.  A check of both UK's and Memphis' website at the time of this writing reveals nothing about which team won the other semi-final matchup.
Paige Brown Saves Another Award
Soccer goalkeeper Paige Brown picked up another weekly honor from The American Conference by picking up the Rookie of the Week award.  Brown had previously earned the GoalKeeper of the Week award from the conference on September 30th.
Rachel Melhado was named on the Honor Roll for the week for her defensive efforts.
Louisville holds a precarious lead atop the conference soccer standings with a 7-1 record in conference for a total of 21 points.  2nd place is held by UCF at 6-0-1 for 19 points.  The last regular season game for UofL is Friday evening at Cincinnati.  Cincinnati sits in 4th place in the conference with a conference record of 4-3-1, and an overall record of 8-9-1.  With a win over Cincinnati, Louisville would need UCF to not win at least one of their two remaining games (against SMU and Houston, both in the bottom half of The American Conference rankings) in order to secure the regular season conference championship.  The first two rounds of the conference tournaments will be played at campus sites (presumably as either the number one or number two seed, Louisville will host) with the semi-finals and finals being hosted by UCF in Tampa, Florida.
Volleyball in action
Volleyball heads down to Murfreesboro, TN to take on the always dangerous Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders.  MTSU sports a 13-7 overall record.  They will then continue their road trip with matches Friday and Sunday at Rutgers and UConn.
King of the Hill
University of Louisville goalkeeper Sydney King was named BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 21. Erin Schneidtmiller was selected to the league’s weekly honor roll.
King, a sophomore from Newport Beach, Calif., helped the Cardinals to a 2-0 week, which included a 2-0 win against No. 11 Northwestern. She made a career-high 10 stops in the win over the Wildcats. King posted seven saves in a 2-1 double-overtime win against Rutgers, including two critical stops in overtime. She currently has a 1.52 goals against average for the season.
Schneidtmiller, a senior from Louisville, Ky., scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 double-overtime triumph versus Rutgers and added an assist in a 2-0 win over No. 11 Northwestern.
The 17th ranked Cardinals have a 12-4 overall record are tied for second with Old Dominion in BIG EAST standings with a 4-1 mark in conference play.
Thursday Cardinal Couple -- Soccer hits the road...Softball releases schedule
THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
-Temple awaits Kickin' Cards
-Softball releases schedule
The Owls.
Again.
Seems like Louisville athletic squads have been in  battles with the Philadelphia school a lot lately. Karen Ferguson-Dayes' soccer team gets their turn in the birdbath today with a 3:00 p.m. start against Temple in Philadelphia.
It'll be the first match in history between the two in soccer.
Temple comes into the contest with a 6-7-1 record and 1-4 in the AAC. They fell the last time out to UConn 3-1...a team Louisville will face in Storrs, CT on Sunday.
The Cards, who at times this year have been scoring-challenged, will face the AAC leader in shutouts in sophomore goalie Shauni Kerkoff...who has seven "no soup for you" efforts on the season. Against UConn, she an amazing night with 15 saves.
UofL, who is 9-4-1 overall and 5-1 in the AAC, fell 1-0 to UCF on Sunday. It was the first time the Cards had been blanked since Labor Day weekend. Another goalie of note, Louisville's Paige Brown, had eight saves against the UCF Knights.
This one could very well be decided a lone score. The question is...which team will kick it?
Saturday Cardinal Couple - Defense dominates in Women's Soccer win over Butler
SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
-Corral, Exeter with goals in 2-0 Cards win over Bulldogs
The University of Louisville women's soccer team opened the regular season Friday night in Cardinal Park with a convincing 2-0 win over Butler. Seniors Charlyn Corral and Christine Exeter produced second half goals and the Cardinal defense limited the Bulldogs to just four shots on goal in 90 minutes in front of a rowdy and full contingent of Cardinal fans.
Karen Ferguson-Dayes:
OPENING REMARKS
" Definitely to get a win in the first game of the season is a nice to start off. I thought we were a little unfortunate in the first half because their was a penalty kick that the referees didn't call and we scored a goal that they didn't call....so it could have been 2-0 at that time...but to have the fortitude to fight back and get a goal about a minute into the second half and to get that second goal at the end of the game was really nice. I think Butler is a really good team...they double teamed Christine (Exeter) and Charlyn (Corral). It was obvious that anytime either of those two got the ball there were numbers around them but we were able to fight them off."
On any second half adjustments by the coaches:
"No, good players got it done. We told them we thought they were playing good and just stay aggressive. Really, I thought  if we could get a goal in the first ten minutes, it would give us a chance to settle into the game. We did get that goal but I don't think we ever settled into a good rhythm."
On Butler:
"I have a lot of respect for Terri and what she's done. We've played them regularly each season and I think what we saw tonight was what we expected we would get. They're a good team and they're going to win some games in the BIG EAST."
After a scoreless first half, Christine Exeter found the back of the net with a header just 53 seconds into the final stanza on a nice set-up pass from Corral. The defense stayed strong and with 5 1/2 minutes left in the game Corral took a pass from Hannah Konermann and performed a nifty cross to get open in the box and drive a kick past Bulldog goalie Julie Burton.
The kickin' Cards outshot Butler 20-9 and had nine attempts on goal...four by Corral. Louisville freshman goalie Paige Brown had her first shutout of her career and the Cardinal defense of Rachele Armand, Chelsea Hunter, Rachel Melhado and Megan Berberich frustrated Bulldog attackers for most of the evening.
The Cards return to action Sunday. Illinois visits Cardinal Park for a 1 p.m. contest.
Sunday Cardinal Couple
SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
-Corral's goal in overtime gives Cards 2-1 win.
Charlyn Corral took a pass in the six-yard box four minutes into overtime against Purdue and drove it to the back of the net to give Louisville the win over the Boilermakers Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, IN.
Corral scoring in a clutch situation. Pretty much commonplace stuff for the senior from Mexico City.
Louisville fell behind early to Purdue in the contest. Freshman Maddy Williams took a corner kick three minutes into the contest and booted the ball off the right post...only to have it deflect in.
The Boilermakers would not score on the Louisville defense or freshman goal keeper Paige Brown again.
Christine Exeter tied the contest with 27 seconds left in
the first half for Louisville...
catching Purdue goalie Clara Krider out of position and driving one home from 40 yards out. Maybe she should offer her services to the football team for kickoff duties.
The teams played a scoreless final 45 minutes with Purdue stopping two shots on goal from Corral midway through the half.
Louisville opens the regular season Friday night against Butler at Cardinal Park at 7 p.m.
Monday Cardinal Couple -- Soccer wins at Vandy
MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
-Louisville defeats Vandy 4-3 in exhibition
The University of Louisville women's soccer team won their first exhibition game of the 2013 season against Vanderbilt 4-3 Sunday night in Nashville. It was the first exhibition for both squads.
Charlyn Corral
Senior attacker Charlyn Corral had two goals to pace the Cards, who led 3-1 at halftime. Corral scored 16 minutes into the game to put Louisville ahead to stay. Senior attacker Christine Exeter found the back of the net 10 minutes later to make it 2-0 UofL. After a Vandy score, Corral tallied again with nine minutes left in the half to give the Cards a 3-1 advantage that they took into half time.
Louisville outshot the 'Dores 11-8 with shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.
Freshman Kari Weinland, a forward from New Albany, OH made it 4-1 Louisville six minutes into the second half. The Cards withstood a final period Vandy charge that made it 4-3 with 27 minutes remaining the the final half.
Freshman Paige Brown (Jackson, MO) started at goalie for Louisville and played the entire 90 minutes...allowing three goals and gathering four saves.
Christine Exeter
Coach Ferguson-Dayes started Exeter,Weinland, Brown, Nicole Mitchell, Chelsea Hunter, Erin Yenney, Devyn Ciotti, Rachel Melhado, freshman defender Caroline Kimble and Megan Berberich
along with Corral.
We've talked with Coach Karen several times over the last couple of months leading up to this game. She noted that scoring would come from several different areas. That was the case last night...with two veteran attackers and a freshman getting on the board. She also had good things to say about her freshman goalie from Missouri. Holding Vandy to jus one goal in 56 minutes of play is impressive. Brown does have a veteran defense in front of her, though. Melhado, Ciotti and Berberich have seen extensive minutes since they've been here.
"Overall I am pleased with our first game, it was a great starting point," said head coach Karen Ferguson Dayes. "I think we have some great attacking personalities, but at times they definitely exposed us defensively. We will use this opportunity to get better."
Louisville returns to action next Saturday in exhibition play against Purdue in West Lafayette, IN. Game time is 1 p.m.
