( JENNY O'BRYAN REVIEWS SOCCER'S HEARTBREAKING LOSS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT AND BASKETBALL'S TOUGH TASK AHEAD TODAY)

-Soccer falls on the final penalty kick

The Kickin’ Cards lost a heartbreaker to Illinois State Redbirds on Saturday to close out the 2013 season, as well as their stay in Cardinal Park.  The team went out in dramatic fashion with the game --  hanging in the balance down to the last penalty kick.   The Cardinals have spent a lot of time this season in overtime, but they just couldn’t finish today.  Cards lose, a tied score of 1-1 after two overtimes led to a shoot out of penalty kicks, where the Redbirds took the advantage, 4-3.

The Cards came onto the field at the start, ready to play.  Less than 5 minutes in to the game Char Corral had a shot on goal that was saved only by a great play from the keeper.    The first half of the game saw the Cardinals dominating possession. The Cards threatened, but could only find the back of the net once in the half.   Sophomore Lexie Niedoba scored her first career goal with this shot.

It looked to this novice fan to be all Cardinal going in to halftime with 4 shots on goal, 7 corners and a 1-0 lead.   Conversely, the Redbirds had no shots on goal, 1 corner, and the keeper was kept busy with 3 saves.

For all the momentum the Cardinals had the first half, the Redbirds came out of halftime with their game face on.  The second half of play saw the Cardinals in defensive mode most of the half, giving up only one goal, but spending a lot of time on the wrong side of the field.

At end of regulation we were all knotted up.  The fans in the bleachers were looking for that golden goal, that first score in overtime that would declare victory.  It was not to be.   The Cardinals, again, dominated possession, and looked to be the easy victor controlling the ball and threatening around the net for likely 9 of the 10 minutes in overtime.  They were achingly close on several shots, only to be denied.   All of that momentum, though, came to a halt as the whistle blew and still, no change to the score.

At this point it had seemed the teams were taking turns controlling the ball.  Holding true, the final overtime period looked to be all Redbirds.  The Cardinal defense looked exhausted.  Twice the Redbirds came down the field, on the right, drawing the keeper away from the pipes, only to send a beautiful cross to center, to have an excellent chance to end it.  Both times the kick went high, and Cardinal fans groaned out sighs of relief.   The Redbirds seemed to dominate the second overtime, but were unable to finish.

On to the final shoot out. Penalty kicks.  Cardinals were up first.  Corral converted.  Redbirds were up, and made it.  Louisville would go on to miss the next two shots.  The Redbirds made their second and missed their third.   Christine Exeter came up for the 4th kick.  She found the back of the net.  2-2.  Redbirds up, another kick in the net.  Redbirds up 3-2.  The Cardinals arrive for their final pk.  No pressure, right?  If it is in, we are all tied up.  A miss, and it is all over.  Niedoba, who scored the only goal in regulation, is up for the final pk.  She sinks it in the back of the net.   No sweat.  Again, we are all tied.  It is 3-3 in PK’s.  The Redibrds have one kick remaining.  It all comes down to this final kick.  Somehow, the ball gets past the keeper and the Redbirds declare victory.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Cardinals, cutting short their post season run.  They played a good game but could just not find a way to finish.   They close out the season exiting the tournament in the first round.

So here we are.  Cardinal Park has seen the last of these Cards.   A very good season ends with the Cards 12-5-2.

(EDITOR'S NOTE...THE WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM NOW HAS A CLEAR AN DEMANDING TASK AHEAD OF THEM TO TRY AND PRODUCE THIS KIND OF WIN/LOSS RECORD IN THE MUCH TOUGHER ACC WOMEN'S SOCCER CONFERENCE THIS SEASON. A LOOK AT THE 2013 TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS SHOWS EIGHT ACC MEMBERS IN THE BIG DANCE, THEY HAD ALL FOUR #1 SEEDS AND WENT 8-0 IN FIRST ROUND PLAY.

-Preseason WNIT Championship game a WUG reunion?

The women’s basketball team travels to Norman, Oklahoma to take on the Oklahoma Sooners in the championship game of the WNIT.  It is a reunion of sorts, as Shoni Schimmel spent some time with Oklahoma  Coach Sherri Coale this past summer with the World University Games.  Also on that same team was Sooner standout, senior guard Aaryn Ellenberg.

As I watched the WUG’s this past summer, I often wondered why Schimmel spent most of the time on the bench.  Coach Coale will not be able to keep Shoni benched this time, and with the way she has been playing, my guess is she will wish she still had the reigns.

This will be the second time the two teams meet.  The last time was in 2009 when the Cardinals made the March to the Arch, meeting Connecticut in the championship game.  The Cards were the underdogs then, and upset the Sooners 61-59. ( I remember the game very well.)

This meeting has the Cardinals ranked 5th vs. the 11th ranked Sooners.  The Sooners were the preseason favorite to win the Big 12, surely the first time in the last 4 years, with Brittney Griner having been in the conference.

The main star power is guard Aaryn Ellenberg.  She is a preseason pick for the All Big 12 Team and also on the watchtlist for Wade, Wooden and Naismith Awards.

The Sooners return 4 of their 5 starters from last season and a veteran squad that is said to be 14 deep.

Projected starters for the Sooners are:
Ellenberg, point guard Morgan Hook (who injured her ankle in the Gonzaga game, but who is a projected starter as of this writing), Sharane Campbell, Nicole Korney and Nicole Griffin.  Griffin has the potential to provide a size advantage in the paint, standing in at 6-6.

Points of interest for the Cards
-Lack of rebounding, specifically offensive rebounding, was exposed by Gonzaga and kept them in the game til the end.    The Cardinals will need to continue the recent trend of outrebounding their opponent, and second chance points on the offensive boards will help put this in the win column.
-Ellenberg will most certainly be a focal point in the scouting report.  Containing her will go a long way in securing the win for the Cards.
-The Sooners are priding themselves on defense and speed.  Slowing them down offensively will go a very long way.  The Sooners will try to push tempo and are practicing scoring within 6 seconds of ball possession.  Stopping the transition and slowing the tempo will work to the Cardinals advantage.
- Gonzaga (in the semifinal game) kept the Sooners in the game by fouling.  The Sooners made a living at the line and won the game down the stretch at the line. The Cardinals will need to stay away from the hand check fouls game and keep the Sooners off the line, who shot roughly 70% most recently.

I have all the faith in both the coaching staff and the team to be prepared.  The Cardinals very recently showed they can rebound and play tough defense.  I expect to see more of that carrying over from the LSU game.

I’ve got the Cardinals winning this game going away, much like the LSU game.  Tune in today on CBS Sports Network at 4:00 p.m. to cheer on your Cardinals!

Monday Cardinal Couple -- Soccer squeaks out 1-0 win. Golf on Monday and Tuesday

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Women's soccer downs UTSA 1-0

- Women's golf hosts Cardinal Cup Mon/Tues

- New rankings for 2014 Cards WBB commits

A "W" is a "W" whether it's 10-0 or 1-0. The Louisville women's soccer team picked up their 4th "W" of the season Sunday in Cardinal Park with a 1-0 win over Texas San Antonio. Christine Exeter kicked in the only score of the game 35 minutes into the second half to give the Cards the only point they needed to improve to 4-2-1.

Louisville dominated the action in the first 45 minutes despite not scoring . The Cards had 14 shots, including 9 on goal, compared to three for the Roadrunners.

The second half brought plenty of opportunites for UofL to pad the lead but it wasn't until the 80th minute of play before the deadlock was broken.

The Cards had a whopping 23-11 shot advantage for the contest. They return to action Saturday, Sept 21st...travelling to Marquette for a 7 p.m. match.

Saturday Cardinal Couple -- Paulie's quarterly grades

SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Paulie's quarterly grades on Volleyball, Soccer and Field Hockey

-Soccer in Cardinal Park wins huge!

-Field Hockey hits the road for two

-Volleyball in Lexington this weekend

With Soccer, Volleyball and Field Hockey getting close to reaching the first 1/4 of their seasons being completed, I thought I might do a little "grading" on how well their season have gone so far. Some will disagree and it is purely objective in scope and concept. Agree or disagree, if you wish, in the comments section or e-mail.  Bringing me an apple won't affect scores.

Timmy the Intern will send a sophomoric and irrelevant reply. It's how we roll here...

VOLLEYBALL (2-5)

Grade: C+

I know that Anne Kordes' squad hasn't had a home match yet. I realize that they've had tough competition on the road, including three top 25 teams. I expected 5-2 at this point. The losses in Fargo were surprising. The UK game could have easily been a win. They will get better as the season progresses. Maya McClendon and Janelle Jenkins are a delight to watch. Katie George may be the most passionate player in UofL women's sports this year. It's been an average season so far. I expect it to get much better.

SOCCER  (3-2-1)

Grade: B

One has to love scoring duo of Charlyn Corral and Christine Exeter. Rachel Melhado dominates her area. Paige Brown has been a surprisingly good goalkeeper. And, Karen Ferguson Dayes' team has been dominant statistically offensively. She'll tell you, they need to finish a bit more. UK and Illinois were winnable game. A look at the stat sheets (without seeing the score) would indicate they were the best team on both days. They lost both contests. The AAC looks very winnable for Louisville. I expect this grade to go up also as the season progresses.

FIELD HOCKEY (4-1)

Grade: A-

It might be a bit unfair to grade Justine's Sowry's squad after only four games. They only play 19 total, though before BIG EAST Conference play. The Virginia loss against a ranked opponent wasn't that bad...Louisville was in it the whole way. Beating tough Richmond and William & Mary squads was exemplary. A romp over Ohio was expected (by me) and happened. Things start to get a little tougher for the Flock beginning this weekend (at Michigan). The BIG EAST schedule is demanding and the Cards do play powerhouses Ohio State and Old Dominion out of conference as well. I'd settle for a 3-3 split in the next six games. They'll do their best to prove me wrong and go 6-0.
A wonderful combination of experienced veterans and explosive freshmen....Sowry is sitting on a powder keg.

So, there you have it. We'll re-grade them all in mid- October.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Kickin' Cards faced Morehead St. Friday in Cardinal Park. A good in-state rivalry and romped as expected 7-2. Six different Cards scored. Christine Exeter and Charlyn Corral had two goals each in the win

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Field hockey headed to Ann Arbor, MI to play UC Davis Friday. They'll face Michigan on Sunday as well. Justine Sowry's flock is #16 in the NFHCA poll and it's their highest ranking since the 2011 preseason poll. Louisville is outsocring opponents 19-7 through five games and freshmen make up half that point total.

It was the first meeting ever between the two.

Louisville produced the shutout 5-0.

Justine Sowry discusses below:

“As the game went on, we continued to stick to our game plan and our basic skills and things started to open up for us,” said Sowry. “Overall a good result and now we look forward to matching up against Michigan tomorrow. We’ll have to be a lot sharper on the ball and we’ll be working hard for each other.”

UC Davis. Hmmm...top seven Davis's?????

- Sammy Davis, Jr. (actor)
- Anthony Davis (hoops)
- Willie Davis (baseball)
- Bette Davis (actress)
- Geena Davis (actress)
- Miles Davis (musician)
- Jefferson Davis (Confererate President)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Once in Memorial Coliseum not being enough....Anne Kordes' Volleyballers headed back to Lexington yesterday to participate in the Bluegrass Battle. They took on Minnesota at 5 p.m. Friday and lost in three sets 25-16, 25-18 and 25-15. They will play Pepperdine today at 5 p.m.

Anne thinks highly of the Gophers:

"After seeing Penn State and Minnesota this season there is no question they are two of the best teams in the country both physically and technically."

It could be a fun weekend if you're going to Lexington for the UofL v UK football game today at noon. Why not catch Volleyball after?

Kordes gets a well deserved trip back home with four in a row in Louisville after this weekend.

The CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR is also on at 11 a.m. today on CRESCENT HILL RADIO.

Yeah, we've been busy and looks like we'll stay that way.

Monday Cardinal Couple - Women's Soccer falls to Illinois

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-CARDS FALL IN OVERTIME TO ILLINI

     -Paulie's report
     -Jeff McAdams report

-JEFF'S VOLLEYBALL COLUMN

Despite a late goal that tied the contest with 91 seconds remaining, Louisville falls to Illinois 5-4 in overtime at Cardinal Park Sunday afternoon.

Coach Dayes on the loss:

"Anytime you give up five goals it's a difficult day for sure," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I thought we did well to get ourselves in a leading position but didn't do very well to hang on to the lead with some careless mistakes that allowed them to score some very good goals. No disrespect to Illinois, I thought finished some great shots, I just think we could have been a step earlier or we could have slid. Just some extra effort would have really been the difference today. It's kind of a difficult game to swallow because I thought it was a game we could have gotten and we let it slip away. Now we have got to refocus and go on the road against two very good ACC teams next weekend."

Louisville trailed 1-0 before Erin Yenney set up Casey Whitfield to tie the game 14 minutes into the contest. The Cards got another score when Charlyn Corral rebounded a missed Kari Weinland shot and found net 11 minutes later. That 2-1 Louisville lead carried the Cards into halftime.

It took Illinois only four minutes to tie it in the second half. The Cards responded less than a minute later...Corral picking up her second score of the game on a penalty kick.

Illinois battled back. Goals by the Illini four minutes later and then at the 60 minute mark gave them a 4-3 lead which lead until Rachel Melhado bombed a 30 yarder that bounced off the top crossbar and landed in front of Christine Exeter...who guided it in to tie it.

Corral narrowly missed the potential game winner a minute into overtime with a shot that just barely went wide. Two minutes later, Megan Johnston got loose on a breakaway and scored the game ender past Louisville freshman goalie Paige Brown.

The Cards outshot Illinois (1-1) 18-17 in the contest and Brown had four saves. Illini goalie Claire Wheatley had seven for the visitors.

Louisville returns to action Friday when they face Virginia Tech in the Wake Forest Invitational.

-Paulie

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>>

JEFF MCADAMS files this report on the contest also and has his observations below from Saturday's Volleyball Red/Black match:

-Soccer In Action

The Women's Soccer team took on a good Illinois team yesterday afternoon on a sunny and warm day at Cardinal Park. There were several swings in momentum as Illinois mostly controlled the first 14 minutes or so, culminating in their first score in the 13th minute. After that, UofL played good possession ball for the rest of the first half. Gathering goals with the 15th (Casey Whitfield) and 26th (Charlyn Corral) minutes, the Cardinals went into the locker room with a 2-1 lead. A look at the other stats showed a very tight game at halftime, with Louisville maintaining a slim lead on shots taken at 9-8, Illinois with a slim lead on corners at 2-1, and both goalkeepers having made 4 stops.

The momentum swung back Illinois' way in the second half, and it seemed that Louisville was having a difficult time getting the ball out of threatening territory and and back downfield. When the soccer ball spends that much time in, or just outside of your box, the opposing team is eventually going to start getting some shots in. Illinois chalked one up in the 51st minute, though Charlyn Corral was able to capitalize on a penalty kick from hand call in Illinois' box to get the Cards back on top at 3-2. The momentum really stayed with Illinois, though, and they continued to press the ball down into territory threatening scores on the Cards and capitalized on that with scores in the 56th and 61st minutes to take their first lead.

With only a minute and a half left to play, Christine Exeter was able to gather a rebound off the bar and find the back of a net to tie it up for the end of regulation.

Still, the momentum really stayed with Illinois, though. They ended it in the fourth minute of overtime period and took home the 5-4 victory.

Karen Ferguson-Dayes squad takes to the road with a trip to North Carolina to take on future ACC conference foes Virginia Tech and Wake Forest next weekend. They come back closer to home the next weekend with games in Lexington, KY and Oxford, OH against Kentucky and Miami (Ohio).

The next chance to see them at home will be Sept. 13th against Morehead State, and the 15th against Texas-San Antonio.

-Volleyball Analysis

Paulie wrote up the coverage yesterday of the Alumnae/Red-Black scrimmage from Volleyball, but I wanted to share some of my observations from the day.

  • Alex Wilharm is good. Alas, he's not eligible to play. The assistant coach did play in the scrimmage for his team as a player/coach. The roster from his college playing days has him listed at 6'2", but he is very athletic and provides a very good foil for our players to deal with very hard hit attacks and big blocks.
  • Speaking of staff...Sarah Drury Petkovic didn't play, but she has definitely gotten back in shape after giving birth to her second child and looks like she could get out there and play with the best of them.
  • Keeping score at this event is mostly pointless as players switch back and forth between the two teams depending on the what lineups the coaches want to most work with.
  • The new black uniforms look really sharp. I'm looking forward to seeing the white and red variants.
  • Emily Juhl is back. Her jump serve is a thing of beauty. Her front row attack (right side) is also really impressive. Thanks in part to...
  • Hannah Kvitle and Katie George are spreading the ball around very well, including their back sets to Emily, and they are really on target this year.
  • Randi Ewing and Janelle Jenkins really do jump as well as Coach Kordes has told us. Really, though, about the only hitter we have that can't put a lot of room between their sneaks and the ground is Carly Sahagian thanks to some ongoing knee issues.
  • Even Brooke Mattingly looks like she's getting some extra space under her soles, and she's not exactly known for her jumping ability, though with an extra 2 inches in height on everyone else on the team, she's still making herself a very strong presence at the net.
  • 2013 Haley Pouliezos is definitely quicker than the 2012 model. She ran down a second hit at the far back corner almost off of the Sport Court and put it solidly back in play. 2012 Haley never would've gotten to that shot.
  • I don't want to play against Javoni Faucette...in any sport. She is a great athlete, and I suspect she's probably good at any sport she attempts.
  • Brooke Betts is wearing a knee brace while she's still recovering from her ACL surgery but she does look like she's moving well and isn't really hindered by it much, or at all. Its a little hard for me to say since I don't what what 100% looks like for her having not seen her play before.
  • What year is Hannah Kvitle? The roster on the website lists her as a senior, but she introduced herself as a junior. She played a year at SLU, sat out for a transfer year and played for us last year. That means she should have another year of eligibility after playing this year. I think the roster is listing academic years, with Brooke Mattingly and Randi Ewing listed as "GS" for Graduate Student, but then they have Janelle Jenkins as "RS FR" for Red-Shirt FreshMan.
Volleyball starts their season Friday with a match against Syracuse at Penn State. Remember that Syracuse, for this year only, is not a conference foe. They go on to play #2 ranked Penn State Saturday evening.

Saturday Cardinal Couple - Defense dominates in Women's Soccer win over Butler

SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Corral, Exeter with goals in 2-0 Cards win over Bulldogs

The University of Louisville women's soccer team opened the regular season Friday night in Cardinal Park with a convincing 2-0 win over Butler. Seniors Charlyn Corral and Christine Exeter produced second half goals and the Cardinal defense limited the Bulldogs to just four shots on goal in 90 minutes in front of a rowdy and full contingent of Cardinal fans.

Karen Ferguson-Dayes:

OPENING REMARKS

" Definitely to get a win in the first game of the season is a nice to start off. I thought we were a little unfortunate in the first half because their was a penalty kick that the referees didn't call and we scored a goal that they didn't call....so it could have been 2-0 at that time...but to have the fortitude to fight back and get a goal about a minute into the second half and to get that second goal at the end of the game was really nice. I think Butler is a really good team...they double teamed Christine (Exeter) and Charlyn (Corral). It was obvious that anytime either of those two got the ball there were numbers around them but we were able to fight them off."

On any second half adjustments by the coaches:

"No, good players got it done. We told them we thought they were playing good and just stay aggressive. Really, I thought  if we could get a goal in the first ten minutes, it would give us a chance to settle into the game. We did get that goal but I don't think we ever settled into a good rhythm."

On Butler:

"I have a lot of respect for Terri and what she's done. We've played them regularly each season and I think what we saw tonight was what we expected we would get. They're a good team and they're going to win some games in the BIG EAST."

After a scoreless first half, Christine Exeter found the back of the net with a header just 53 seconds into the final stanza on a nice set-up pass from Corral. The defense stayed strong and with 5 1/2 minutes left in the game Corral took a pass from Hannah Konermann and performed a nifty cross to get open in the box and drive a kick past Bulldog goalie Julie Burton.

The kickin' Cards outshot Butler 20-9 and had nine attempts on goal...four by Corral. Louisville freshman goalie Paige Brown had her first shutout of her career and the Cardinal defense of Rachele Armand, Chelsea Hunter, Rachel Melhado and Megan Berberich frustrated Bulldog attackers for most of the evening.

The Cards return to action Sunday. Illinois visits Cardinal Park for a 1 p.m. contest.
