Welcome to the ACC, SMU -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

As we approach the 2024-2025 sports season, we will see three new schools regularly appearing on the other side of the field/pitch/court from UofL. The addition of Southern Methodist (SMU), California (Cal), and Stanford took effect recently. We will go through the sports that each school offers over the next few weeks.

Southern Methodist University (SMU)

SMU currently fields 16 varsity sports, noticeably less than the 21 Louisville has. 10 of those teams are women's programs while the remaining six are men's programs. The only sport they carry that Louisville doesn't is Equestrian. There are currently 21 Division I schools that field Equestrian.

Women's Sports offered:

-Basketball: Last season, the Mustangs went 14-16 and fell in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

-Cross Country: Unlike many schools, SMU does not have both men's and women's cross country. Their women's team had a fairly successful run last fall, tying for fifth in the NCAA Regional round.

-Equestrian: SMU is the reigning back-to-back national champions, narrowly beating out top-ranked TCU for the title back in April.

-Golf: The Mustangs have a strong women's program. They advanced to the national championship and finished 24th overall last year.

-Rowing: The Mustangs won a tight one in the AAC Championship.

-Soccer: At 11-6-1 and falling in the AAC title game, SMU was one of the first schools out to miss the NCAA Tournament.

-Swimming and Diving: The Mustangs finished second in the AAC Championships. They did not send a team to the NCAA Championships but did have a couple individual divers compete.

-Tennis: A 14-12 overall record would not have gotten SMU into the postseason, but they won the AAC title to earn their way in, where they advanced to the second round after upsetting #33 Alabama.

-Track and Field: This is another sport where you typically see men's and women's programs together. SMU only carries a women's team. With just three points recorded, the Mustangs placed 50th overall in the NCAA Championships.

-Volleyball: SMU went 26-7 overall and 18-1 in the AAC en route to a conference championship. They fell to Texas in the second round.

Although we won't see them in on the lacrosse or field hockey fields, since they don't field sports in those two areas, it still appears that SMU is pretty strong in the women's events they do offer. Granted, the step from the AAC to the ACC is a pretty huge one. but the WBB home court...Moody Coliseum, as been described as a being a very tough place for opponent to come in and win. The legend of "Moody Magic" for SMU against incoming opponents is an interesting local tradition. .

Men's Sports offered:

W
e found it interesting that a school of almost 12,000 enrollment only offerss (6) men's sports. We don't cover men's sports in our Cardinal Couple columns, but a cursory glance indicates that the men's sports they do carry at SMU did pretty daggone good in the AAC last year.

-Basketball: 20-13 last season

-Football: 11-3 last season with AAC Championship

-Golf: 2nd in AAC, 26th at NCAAs

-Soccer: 14-3-2 last season

-Swimming and Diving: Atlantic Sun (ASUN) Champions, 18th at NCAAs

-Tennis: 17-11 last season

We will break down the sports Cal and Stanford bring to the table in the future.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

Friday Cardinal Couple -- UofL to celebrate ACC membership on July 1st

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Mascots, Swafford headed to town to welcome UofL

My memory, for what good it is these days, doesn't recall a gala affair when we joined the AAC. Probably just as good...we were the party crashers for a year, took a lot of titles and trophies and walked out the front door with a prom queen wave.

Joining the BIG EAST was a big deal back then in 2005-2006. Imagine playing Notre Dame and UConn in WBB each year. It was enough (probably) to send Tom Collen running for the SEC after two years. He did compile a 20-12 Conference slate in those two years, though...but who in their right mind leaves juniors Angel McCoughtry and Candyce Bingham?

Conference USA came calling in 1995-96. No parades, mascots or drink specials on 4th Street Live accompanied that move. In fact, it drove Howard Schnellenberger off campus and to Oklahoma. The WBB competition was about the same as the Metro Conference. Bud Childers stuck around for two years before realizing he'd never get the Cards past the first round of the "Big Dance"

And, now....the ACC. A bright new beginning for Cardinal Athletics. We know a few of the existing members...BIG EAST foes like Syracuse, Pitt, Notre Dame. We were teamed up with Fla. State, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech in the Metro. The rest, we'll figure out.

Eat your heart out, West Virginia. This is the conference that fit your needs perfectly but you jumped ship to the BIG 12 before waiting out the changes.

Here's the events lined up for July 1st on 4th Street Live, courtesy of the UofL SID department:

The free event will begin with live entertainment and video presentations at 5 p.m. with Louisville's in-stadium DJ, K-Dogg, followed by a program at 6 p.m. The program will include special messages from Louisville coaches and student-athletes, fan giveaways, and plenty of surprises. A concert featuring the Louisville Crashers will cap the celebration on the main stage following the program. There will be food and beverage specials at participating establishments in Fourth Street Live! surrounding the celebration.

ACC Commissioner John Swofford, UofL President Dr. James Ramsey, and Vice President/Director of Athletics Tom Jurich will be among those participating in the celebration. An 11 a.m. press conference that day will be streamed live by the ACC Digital Network on theACC.com.
Mascots from each of the 15 ACC institutions will make a special appearance at the event and interact with fans at Fourth Street Live!. The mascots also will visit with children at the U of L Autism Center that afternoon.

It's a Tuesday, by the way...so attendance might be a bit tepid...but it sounds like a lot of fun and a 5 p.m. start time should allow a lot of people to get there after work and picking up the kids.

From MVC to Metro to CUSA and BIG EAST to AAC and ACC. Somewhere, I've probably got t-shirts or sweatshirts that have the conference logo of each of the Louisville incarnations in each conference.

Final destination for awhile. Looks like a good place to hang
out. Rivalries renewed, rivalries ahead. Anytime that Louisville has moved to a conference in the past 40 years, they have quickly become the most dominant athletic program in that conference.

That domination may be slow in coming in the ACC. As the new kids on the block, the Cards will take a few thumpings. Maybe not as bad as the Spurs put on the Heat last night...but don't expect a dominance in conference championship titles right away. Challenges. Failures and successes. Good times.

And no Geno to beat Walz up two or three times a year. Gotta love that.. and it's as good as reason as any to celebrate on July 1st...

Friday Cardinal Couple --- Nita Slaughter is back !!!

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

           ********BREAKING NEWS********

Senior wing Nita Slaughter has been cleared to practice and play the remainder of the season by doctors. Jeff Walz broke the news in a press conference today, stating that Slaughter participated in practice Thursday, will practice today and will dress for the Saturday game vs. Cincinnati at 2 p.m. Saturday.

It is surprising...but great news for the Cards. The leader in three-point percentage for the Cards is back

Nita is back !!

FROM GOCARDS.COM...

Slaughter was sidelined initially because a blood clot was found in her lungs and the use of blood-thinners prevents an athlete from competition. The most recent scans taken at the Mayo Clinic were clean of the previously seen blood clot in her lung and no further treatment is needed, therefore clearing her to play. After her full evaluation, the treating physicians are confident in her clearance at this point. She has returned to team practices and will be able to return to games once deemed ready by the coaching staff. "I am excited about returning to the court," said Slaughter. "After being away the last month, I realized how much I love the game of basketball. I am grateful for the opportunity to return and being able to contribute to my team. I am looking forward to competing with my team and picking up where we left off last year."

Walz said Slaughter was referred by doctors at Jewish Hospital to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where she underwent extensive tests that all returned within the normal range for heart activity. The tests also showed no trace of the blood clot, and no further treatment is needed. Walz said she has been taken off all medications.

"We've had some great news on Antonita," Walz said. "As of (Thursday), Antonita has actually been cleared to play. . . . We're thrilled to have Antonita back. But more importantly, we're thrilled that she's okay. What took place on Dec. 3 was probably the scariest moment that I've been involved with in college coaching. To see her now back, smiling, and in good health, is what we're most concerned about and most excited about."

Walz said Slaughter could play a few minutes in Saturday's 2 p.m. home game against Cincinnati, "depending on situations, just to get her a chance to get back out there, depending on how she's feeling" and that her return will be gradual.

Walz said both Slaughter and her teammates were excited at practice on Thursday.

"She was absolutely thrilled, relieved, just, you know, it's a situation for a month you're just doing extensive tests, EKGs, looked at her heart, and everything came back and looked great," Walz said. "It's not something that was taken lightly, by no means. We've gone to the best of the best. They've consulted with others after looking at all the tests and results, and believe that she's good to go."

Walz said he'd just judge her ability to play moving forward based on what he sees in practice. He said that he'll proceed cautiously, and he has that luxury.

Slaughter is the team's fifth-leading scorer at 9.3 points per game, and she is the Cardinals' most consistent three-point shooter. She started 30 of 38 games during U of L's national runner-up season last year, averaging 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 36 percent from three-point range, and making the All-Final Four team.

"It's going to take a while. It's not something where she'll just jump back and play 25 or 30 minutes a game," Walz said. "She's gone an entire month with no activity. You can't take a month off and then expect to jump back into college athletics at this level. We're fortunate, we play Saturday, then we have a week off. So she'll get some time to get some conditioning in. But what's really exciting for our program is the fact that we have a deep group. It's not something that she's going to have to be pressed to get right back out there. We're going to be able to take our time and get her in as we see fit."

Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- WBB, Volleyball in action tonight

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Louisville WBB travels to Bowling Green for WKU

- Louisville Volleyball hosts UConn

Thanks to Burn Brother for forwarding this Jude picture
We all know the plot lines. Former assistant goes up against mentor. Former Cardinal and Louisville high school greats on WKU bench as assistant and staff. Frormer Cardinal assistant faces previous employer. Toss in a wise-cracking detective, blonde in an overcoat, and shadowy figures and you've got a great mystery thriller. (No...Jeff, Jenny, Paulie and Sonja are not playing the aforementioned character actors)

Yes, the University of Louisville women's basketball team travels to Bowling Green tonight. Michelle Clark-Heard (head coach), Candyce Bingham (assistant coach), Margaret Richards (assistant coach), Greg Collins (assistant coach) and Laura Terry (program assistant) all have ties to either UofL or the city in one fashion or another.

And Jeff Walz has ties to WKU, serving as an assistant to Paul Sanderford...who still has ties to WKU and mentored Jeff.

I know, it's beginning to sound like a Waltons' Mountain reunion (maybe Cortnee Walton will show up) or family picnic...so let's get to the game itself.

WKU hosts the Cards and is on a three-game win streak. Their only defeat on the season came to Vandy. Last out they went on the road and whipped NKU (another Commonwealth of Kentucky directional school) 74-64.

Louisville travels in with an unblemished record...downing Free Shoes University (aka Florida State) 69-59 in overtime in the YUM! Sunday. The Cards are either #4 or #3 in the nation (choose your poll) and can't get caught looking ahead to UK on Sunday.

The Toppers have talent. Alexis Gowin and Chastity Gooch put up a combined 36 points against NKU. The game is a big one for Topper fans, staff and players...a top five ranked team hasn't visited E.A. Diddle Arena since 1998 and the Toppers won that one...against LA.Tech.

CHASTITY GOOCH
Playing Louisville: “I feel like this is a huge opportunity for us. I feel like this game should tell us where we stand. It’s very exciting. How many teams can say they get to play a No. 4 team in the country?
Handling Cardinals’ pressure: “We just have to talk to one another. We have to calm each other down. If we see someone kind of getting out of control, we’ve got to tell that person it’s OK and just take care of the ball.”

WKU is rolling out all the stops for this one. Free tickets at area IGA grocery stores, 1000 free "white out t-shirts" for attending fans.  A food deal including a hot dog, bag of chips and soda for $7 bucks. A coat drive by the Bowling Green Jr. Women's Club.

Attendance should be huge. E.A. Diddle Arena holds about 7300. Can the Toppers fill it on Thanksgiving Eve?

The Cards will be looking to perform a little better at the start of this one than they did in their only other away game this season (Oklahoma) or last game against FSU (at the YUM!).
Louisville has weapons galore, a surprisingly good rebounding margin over opponents this season and Shoni.
That should be enough to translate into a "W" for the Ville.

Game time is 8 p.m. EST and ESPN 3 has the broadcast. It's also on Cards TV, Cards Radio 790, WKU PBS in the Bowling Green area and the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network.

Cardinal Couple will be there also and we'll have a full report on the action and events Thanksgiving morning. We sincerely hope that the Cards don't go down to Bowling Green and become turkeys. We'd love to see them carve WKU up. Drumsticks crossed, we'll have thankful news and a story line that involves a UofL win.

I have this feeling, though...this one is going to be a close one...decided in the final minutes. It's a potential season-changing game for WKU and Michelle Clark-Heard's team doesn't quit until the final buzzer goes off .

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Louisville Volleyball moves to Cardinal Arena for action tonight at 7 p.m. against UConn. The Huskies haven't had a season to boast about in the AAC...but it's a good idea to always be a little wary of any team that sports the Huskies logo.

Brooke Mattingly had 12 kills and six blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 win over UConn at UConn on Oct. 27th.

We'll have a recap on this match also in the Thanksgiving edition of CC.

With the home slate complete, the UConn women's volleyball team (13-18, 4-12 American) hits the road this week to close out the 2013 season. UConn will face Louisville (21-7, 16-0 American) on Wednesday at 7 p.m., then conclude the regular season with Cincinnati (2-28, 2-14 American) on Friday at 12 p.m.

Friday Cardinal Couple -- Soccer flies past Owls 3-1 -- Volleyball @ UC tonight

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Strong first half gives Cards win in Philly

- Volleyball travels to Cincy for Friday match

Louisville women's soccer picked up their tenth win of the season yesterday afternoon in Philly...scoring three goals in the first half and eventually downing Temple 3-1.

The Cards got onto the scoreboard four minutes into the game when Charlyn Corral delivered a feed to Erin Yenney...who booted it home past Owls goalie Shauni Kerkoff.

Louisville increased the lead to 2-0 when Casey Whitfield set up Shannon Dennehey in the box at the thirteen minute mark. The Cards completed their portion of the scoring with 152 seconds left in the first stanza...Nicole Gerber bouncing one in unassisted.

Temple would score five minutes into second half play...a defensive struggle took up the remaining 40 minutes.

The Cards had a wide advantage in shots (26-6) and shots on goal (11-1). Kerkoff was busy between the pipes with eight saves.

Louisville heads to Storrs, CT next for a noon showdown with the Huskies Sunday.

AAC standings after today:

What they mean, I have no clue...but Louisville is on top and that's pretty sweet.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After a disappointing out-of-conference loss to Wichita State earlier in the week, the VolleyCards look to gain another conference "W" when they visit Jerry Springer's hometown Friday Night to face UC.

The Bearcats aren't the power they once were back in the BIG EAST. Far from it. UC is an embarrassing 0-19, 0-6 on the season and if you thought Anne Kordes had a rebuilding job ahead of her...pity the poor soul who tries to resurrect this once proud program.

Ironically, Kordes started her college volleyball career playing at UC before transferring to Louisville. We expect she'll show a bit of compassion on the wobbling wide-netters in 'NATI.

Louisville is atop the AAC standings with a perfect 6-0 conference record. Temple and UCF have one loss each.

The CARDINAL COUPLE CORPORATE
Polka Band is available for your next event!
Columnist Jeff McAdams was debating making the northern trip tonight. I hope it's for Octoberfest in Covington and he brings back Yuengling. If he goes to the game, he may need several and Anne Kordes just might ask him to serve a few times...

Thursday Cardinal Couple -- Soccer hits the road...Softball releases schedule

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Temple awaits Kickin' Cards

-Softball releases schedule

The Owls.

Again.

Seems like Louisville athletic squads have been in  battles with the Philadelphia school a lot lately. Karen Ferguson-Dayes' soccer team gets their turn in the birdbath today with a 3:00 p.m. start against Temple in Philadelphia.

It'll be the first match in history between the two in soccer.

Temple comes into the contest with a 6-7-1 record and 1-4 in the AAC. They fell the last time out to UConn 3-1...a team Louisville will face in Storrs, CT on Sunday.

The Cards, who at times this year have been scoring-challenged, will face the AAC leader in shutouts in sophomore goalie Shauni Kerkoff...who has seven "no soup for you" efforts on the season. Against UConn, she an amazing night with 15 saves.

UofL, who is 9-4-1 overall and 5-1 in the AAC, fell 1-0 to UCF on Sunday. It was the first time the Cards had been blanked since Labor Day weekend. Another goalie of note, Louisville's Paige Brown, had eight saves against the UCF Knights.

This one could very well be decided a lone score. The question is...which team will kick it?

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The 2014 Cardinal softball schedule has been released and it looks to be a challenging one for Sandy Pearsall's sluggers

Monday Cardinal Couple -- Volleyball stays undefeated in the AAC

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Volleyball defeats Knights in 4 sets

-Soccer gets blanked by #19 UCF

-Field Hockey loses in O.T. to Brown

Another "three for Sunday" for UofL women's sports to report on today. Only Volleyball was able to notch a "W", however...we look at all three contests below.

MAYA SAYS "Hiya !" TO UCF DEFENSE
