Tuesday Cardinal Couple - Favorite Fall Venues

Favorite Fall Venues

Saturday, Paulie gave us five of his wishes for fall for UofL athletics...and probably stretched it a bit by talking about Basketball and a catch-all at the end, but hey, its his site, he can do what he wants.

I'd like to riff on that theme a slight bit and talk a bit about the fall venues, with a look at which venues I'm most looking forward to visiting to watch fall sports.

#1 Lynn Stadium

OK, this one really can't be much of a surprise.  There's definitely a novelty factor here, but I truly am looking forward to watching UofL Soccer compete at the spiffy new Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Soccer Stadium.  The towering roof over the primary seating area teased me all through Lacrosse season.  With seating for approximately 5,300, this will be a significant upgrade for watching soccer from the Cardinal Park Stadium.  2,300 chairback seats more than equals the total built-in bench seating capacity in Cardinal Park.  Bleacher seating behind the east end-zone increases the capacity another 900, the rest is berm seating.  At Cardinal Park I've enjoyed both sitting in the bleachers and standing in the end-zones equally.  I can't wait to see what its like to do the same at Lynn Stadium.  I also get the privilege of experiencing press-box hospitality, and with the upgrade that happened at Ulmer Stadium for Softball, I can't wait to see what they've done for Soccer.

#2 Brown Rowing Center

For two years now, I've gone to Waterfront Park in October to the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center for the Red and Black Regatta.  The only real chance to see the UofL Rowing team in action, even if it is only a scrimmage, it also serves as an open house for UofL fans to see the amazing waterfront facility where the second largest team in the UofL Athletic Department practices.  The Brown Rowing Center is spectacular, and I don't want to pass up the opportunity to show my support for the UofL team that probably gets the least support from the fan base with the complete lack of home competitions.  Derek Copeland proved himself an excellent host last year with food for all, and of course with the various rowers around to answer questions and provide impromptu tours of the boathouse, its all a fan could ask for.

#3 Cardinal Arena

Sure, you knew Volleyball was going to make the list, but you probably figured I'd list the KFC Yum! Center, but to tell you the truth, despite it being an older facility...perhaps the least recently updated athletic facility at the University...I really relish the chances to watch Volleyball at Cardinal Arena.  There's a very definite charm to watching events at Cardinal Arena, obviously seating capacity is limited...too limited for UofL Volleyball, honestly...but that just makes the atmosphere electric.  Volleyball has drawn nearly 1,300, for a big match (Kentucky, in September of 2009), in a facility that officially seats 840, and you can imagine how loud a crowd like that was in an arena of that size.  You're right on top of the action at Cardinal Arena...enough so that you need to stay alert for volleyballs flying into the stands and if you're lucky enough to have a first-row seat in the west-side seating, maybe a player or two!  (Team benches and officials tables block the path to the east-side stands.)  Of course, any visit to the KFC Yum! Center is a treat and being able to have crowd sizes for Volleyball well upwards of 2,000 is a privilege that only a few teams have, but do yourself a favor and catch a match or two...or all six this year...at Cardinal Arena.

#4 Ralph Wright Natatorium

I've only ever been to one Swimming and Diving meet, and alas my visit got cut short by a crisis at my place of work.  Coming off of an amazing year, I hope to lend some more support to another team that doesn't typically get a lot of attention at UofL.  Free admission, concessions, and a typically great UofL facility to be proud of.  I didn't get the opportunity to see any of the diving competition in my previous visit, I plan to remedy that.

#5 Trager Stadium

Field Hockey is a sport that I'm still learning about, so every visit to Trager Stadium, in the Marshall Center/Field Hockey Complex is a fascinating experience.  Field Hockey, much like Lacrosse, is really a thrilling sport to watch, and Justine Sowry's rapid-fire substitution patterns only add to the excitement.  Whether you like to be right on top of the action, or elevated above to have a better view of the overall field, there's turf level bleachers, as well as elevated stands to accommodate your desires.  If you get excited enough that you prefer to stand, there's even some limited space for standing at mid-field.  Field Hockey is another sport that has free admission, along with a concession stand including a beer license, and fans that will gladly help you learn about the sport.

EDITOR'S NOTE:

I heartily agree with Worldwide Jeff's choices and it only takes your veteran Paulie a few minutes to remember all the Volleyball matches at one time were at Cardinal Arena, women's soccer was at Cardinal Park, when there was no rowing facility,  swimming meets were held in the pool in the basement of Crawford Gym and Field Hockey was battling it out in the MAC Conference and playing matches on the intramural football field.

UofL has come so far... it's hard to imagine what else Tom Jurich & crew can expand on. Stay tuned, though, and trust in Tom....if there is a will and a way, he will get it done.

Saturday Cardinal Couple - Defense dominates in Women's Soccer win over Butler

SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Corral, Exeter with goals in 2-0 Cards win over Bulldogs

The University of Louisville women's soccer team opened the regular season Friday night in Cardinal Park with a convincing 2-0 win over Butler. Seniors Charlyn Corral and Christine Exeter produced second half goals and the Cardinal defense limited the Bulldogs to just four shots on goal in 90 minutes in front of a rowdy and full contingent of Cardinal fans.

Karen Ferguson-Dayes:

OPENING REMARKS

" Definitely to get a win in the first game of the season is a nice to start off. I thought we were a little unfortunate in the first half because their was a penalty kick that the referees didn't call and we scored a goal that they didn't call....so it could have been 2-0 at that time...but to have the fortitude to fight back and get a goal about a minute into the second half and to get that second goal at the end of the game was really nice. I think Butler is a really good team...they double teamed Christine (Exeter) and Charlyn (Corral). It was obvious that anytime either of those two got the ball there were numbers around them but we were able to fight them off."

On any second half adjustments by the coaches:

"No, good players got it done. We told them we thought they were playing good and just stay aggressive. Really, I thought  if we could get a goal in the first ten minutes, it would give us a chance to settle into the game. We did get that goal but I don't think we ever settled into a good rhythm."

On Butler:

"I have a lot of respect for Terri and what she's done. We've played them regularly each season and I think what we saw tonight was what we expected we would get. They're a good team and they're going to win some games in the BIG EAST."

After a scoreless first half, Christine Exeter found the back of the net with a header just 53 seconds into the final stanza on a nice set-up pass from Corral. The defense stayed strong and with 5 1/2 minutes left in the game Corral took a pass from Hannah Konermann and performed a nifty cross to get open in the box and drive a kick past Bulldog goalie Julie Burton.

The kickin' Cards outshot Butler 20-9 and had nine attempts on goal...four by Corral. Louisville freshman goalie Paige Brown had her first shutout of her career and the Cardinal defense of Rachele Armand, Chelsea Hunter, Rachel Melhado and Megan Berberich frustrated Bulldog attackers for most of the evening.

The Cards return to action Sunday. Illinois visits Cardinal Park for a 1 p.m. contest.

Thursday Cardinal Couple - Let's Get It Started

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( JEFF McADAMS writes today about the weekend ahead, where three of the UofL women's sports squads take to the fields and courts to excel. It's been a long time coming, let's get it started!) LINK BELOW:

Let's Get It Started (Black Eyed Peas)

O frabjous day!  Callooh!  Callay!

With apologies to The Black Eyed Peas ("Let's Get It Started") and Lewis Carroll ("Jabberwocky"), its a great time for us here at The Cardinal Couple as we get to start writing about sporting events actually occurring again.

Women's Soccer

Women's Soccer starts their last season playing in Cardinal Park with a Friday evening season and home opener against Butler.  Our visitors from Indianapolis get to meet the Cards kickers coming off of two good warm-up exhibition wins against Vanderbilt and Purdue the past two weekends.  They had to go to overtime against Purdue to get the job done, but wins they were.

Of course, now the games start counting.  Coming off of a 12-5-4 season last year, and an early 2012 season loss to Louisville, it seems that Butler is not exactly a powerhouse of a soccer team, but not a team you want to take for granted, either.  This year, Butler claims a 3-2 win over Ball State in exhibition play.

Sunday sees Illinois joining us at Cardinal Park.  The Illini had a nine loss season last year, which would tend to suggest that they aren't all that competitive of a team, though all of their losses were to some pretty tough teams, so perhaps they just scheduled a really tough schedule.  One of the joys of the very early season is not really knowing how strong the teams are that you're competing against.

Friday's game is a 7pm first kick, and Sunday kicks at 1pm.  A slight chance of rain on Friday, diminishing towards the evening, and the forecast is for dry and warm on Sunday...early in the year is a good chance to check out Karen Ferguson-Dayes' team without having to dress like Nanook of the North.  It should be a good couple of days out at Cardinal Park.  Adult tickets are $5, under 18 are $3, and under 2 years are free.

Field Hockey

Justine Sowry's Field Hockey team has a scrimmage Saturday against IU in Bloomington, IN.  This is a great road-trip through the rolling hills of western Indiana.  The game is a 1pm start, which should leave you enough time after the game to make it back to Louisville for...

Volleyball

Saturday at 6pm is the annual Volleyball alumnae match.  Last year there weren't enough

alumnae willing to play to field a team so this event turned into a Red v Black scrimmage.  No word yet on whether enough alumnae have committed to playing to field a team, though I certainly hope so.  I would certainly love to see great players like Justine Landi, Lindsey Mango, and Maci Wachtel back out on the court.  Sarah Drury-Petkovick, Directory of Volleyball Operations, is also an alumna and could, in theory be on the opposite side of the net.  Of course, Coach Anne Kordes is also an alumna, but she'll be too busy coaching, and being pregnant, to play on the alumnae team.

The alumnae event is a free, ticketless event at Cardinal Arena and is great fun every year.  If you've never been to Cardinal Arena, its a fantastic, cozy arena that's great for watching Volleyball action.  Any seat you sit in gives you a great view of the action...well, maybe not if you're directly behind the Up Referee.

Volleyball Preseason Honors

Speaking of Volleyball, yesterday saw the announcement of The American Conference preseason coaches poll, and preseason All Conference Team.  Louisville claims the preseason conference number one ranking...which isn't all that much of a surprise, honestly...and placed 4 players on the preseason All-Conference team.  Hannah Kvitle was the only one of the four that wasn't a unanimous selection, though she is the only setter to make the team.  Caitlin Welch is the only Libero to make the team and did so as a unanimous selection.  Emily Juhl and Brooke Mattingly also were both unanimous selections, and also were tabbed as co-Preseason Players of the Year.

Louisville Volleyball is starting the season with a 19th rank in the AVCA preseason poll, a drop of only two positions from the end of season poll from last year after graduating approximately 70% of the offensive kills on the team.

Volleyball opens their season next weekend, the 30th and 31st, with matches against non-conference-foe-for-a-year Syracuse and host Penn State at the Penn State Invitational.

Friday Cardinal Couple --Women's Soccer hosts UK...Field Hockey and Volleyball on the road

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Soccer Cards hosts the Cats in Cardinal Park

-VolleyCards travel to Cincy for BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge

-Field Hockey in Bloomington for Hoosier match

Barack Obama shows how Gwen Rucker blocks shots at
the net at the Democratic National Convention. Michelle
applauds the women's soccer teams undefeated season.
(I'm pretty sure that's what they're doing...but it was late.)
Another busy, busy weekend for UofL women's sports! The action will be heated and intense as Karen Ferguson-Dayes undefeated soccer ladies take on also undefeated UK. Anne Kordes has her net prowlers in Cincinnati for two tough contests and Justine Sowry and the field hockey squad travel to IU for two this weekend. Put on the shin guards, knee pads and cletes...we're gonna kick up, set up and slap shot you today's trifecta version of CARDINAL COUPLE!

Soccer Cards look to remain undefeated.

UK again. In Louisville again. The Cats surely must be tired of driving across I-64 to our fair city and getting beat in athletics...but they return today to face #12 Louisville women's soccer in a 7:30 p.m. match-up at Cardinal Park.

It's the Courtyard Marriott Classic and the Cards kick it off against a UK team that is also undefeated (4-0) and who played the same two opponents Louisville did this last weekend up in Lexington.

Louisville with many offensive weapons in Erin Yenney, Angelika Uremovich, Irene Young, Katie Walz, Charlyn Corral and...oh, yeah...the Cards leading scorer from last year Christine Exeter. Good time for her to gather her first (and hopefully more) scores of the season. Chloe Kiefer has three shutouts at golakeeper this season. She'll have her work cut out for her tonight.

Cards also looking for a little payback from last year when the Cats took a 2-0 victory in Lexington. UK leads the series 9-5-1 lifetime.

It's a "red-out" in Cardinal Park and the match will televised on WHAS-TV. 11.2, Insight 432 and Comcast 207. You can also catch the action on CARDS TV. This one is worth the trip, though...hope to see you in the stands in Cardinal Park tonight! If you go, you just might see a couple of UofL WBB recruits in attendance as well. Stay away, rain!

Volleyball to face Purdue in Cincinnati Friday.

The #24 VolleyCards face another tough early pre-conference tilt this afternoon when they face off against #11 Purdue at 4:30 p.m. on the U.C. campus.

Louisville looking for revenge against the Boilermakers...who put the Cards out of the NCAA Tournament last year. Purdue (5-1) returns ferocious outside hitter Ariel Turner, the pre-season Big 10 player of the year. She'll get a lot of help from Val Nichol and Annie Drews at the net.

Louisville will look for big performances from Lola Arslanbekova, who leads the Cards in kills and is the pre-season BIG EAST player of the year...and her net-mates Gwen Rucker, Kaitlynn James, Emily Juhl, Brooke Mattingly and Tanya Lukyanenko.

CARDINAL COUPLE'S Jeff McAdams will be in the Fifth-Third Arena and giving us a full report on the Purdue and Illinois games there this weekend.

Field Hockey faces IU in Bloomington

A mid-afternoon face-off for Justine Sowry's field hockey Cards against the IU Hoosiers today. A re-match of sorts from the earlier exhibition match these two had in Trager back in mid-August that Louisville won 3-0.

Cards (3-1) getting good scoring out of Becca Maddock, Mallory Mason and Erin Schneidtmiller so far this season and the defense has rallied around goalkeeper Erin Conrad, who is allowing a scant 1.5 goals per game and has a shutout as well.

IU on the improve since their loss to the Cards a month ago. The Hoosiers (3-0) have downed Vermont, Missouri State and Kent State.

Louisville leads the lifetime series 8-6 and also won last year 1-0 at Trager Stadium on Senior Day.

(Good luck to all three UofL women's sports teams today and if you can't make the drive to Bloomington or Cincy, join us at Cardinal Park tonight. The only thing better than beating UK twice is...beating them three times. See you there!)
