Softball rubber match tonight -- Baylor the WBB NCAA Champs -- MONDAY CARDINALCOUPLE

CARDS & NOLES FACE OFF AT 7 p.m.

Probably would be pretty good at lawn bowling, too

Louisville Softball faces #3 FSU tonight at 7 p.m. in Ulmer Stadium for the deciding third game in the 2019 series between the two squads. These type of showdown games are sometimes referred to as "rubber" matches. 

So, the question is, how did the term "rubber match" get started? 

Most sports historians and people who research stuff like that trace it back to the quaint, old sport of English lawn bowling.

This bowling is unlike the more popular form of regular bowling -- it takes place on a big lawn instead of an indoor bowling alley -- and the participants throw or "bowl" small wooden balls across the field to see who can get closest to a smaller white ball at the opposite end of the field. Maybe like bocci ball or curling, in a sense.

A "rubber" is bad -- that means the ball you've just thrown has "rubbed up" against another previously thrown ball and usually results in knocking the opponents ball closer to the small white ball and stopping the progress of your ball. 

This sport's matches are usually played in games of three. What any of this has to do with a deciding third game in a series is still pretty nebulous to me -- maybe the term "there were a few rubbers in that third match that cost me" -- helps some, but...I still wonder why we drive on parkways and park on driveways.

Nevertheless, rubber or not, the Cards and Noles hope do to battle despite a Monday weather forecast that looks less than promising. A 60% percent chance in the morning hours, transitioning into cloudy skies tonight. As I look out my front bay window this morning (there's another term that gets me -- I have no bay in front of my house, just taxus bushes) it's overcast but not raining. Maybe I overthink these things...

The Noles sit atop the Atlantic division of the ACC with a 37-4 record and 9-2 in ACC play. The Cards in 4th in the Atlantic at 24-13 and 5-6. 

It'll be interesting to see who gets "the call" to enter the pitching circle for UofL tonight. Danielle Watson tossed a two-hitter at FSU Friday in the 2-0 first game win. She's 8-10 on the season and has an ERA of 2.86. Taylor Roby finished the 4-1 loss in the second game and is 7-1 on the year with a sizzling 1.74 ERA. Senior Megan Hensley tops the Cards with a 9-3 record, her ERA is 2.56. Watson leads Louisville with 100 innings pitched and she also has the most strikeouts of opponents with 106.

ESPN U has the broadcast for this one. Melissa Lee with the play-by-play and former Cardinal associate softball coach Carol Bruggeman with analytic observations and prognostications. 

Let's hope the skies stay dry. Let's hope Cards can get the pitching like they had in the first two and that the bats wake up and do great things for Louisville tonight.

BAYLOR BEARS WIN ANOTHER NCAA THRILLER OVER NOTRE DAME 82-81 FOR TITLE

If you're a fan of basketball, this one was fun to watch. The Bears taking control early, getting the lead up to 17 in the second half and then disaster struck when All-American Lauren Cox went down with what looked to be a very bad knee injury with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

Notre Dame had started to cut into the lead, and without team leader Cox on the court..things went rotten pretty quickly. The Irish, led by Arike Ogunbowale and Marina Mabrey were giving it one last push...and it was paying off. Coming back to take the lead with less than three to go. Baskets traded. Baylor hanging on for dear life but getting big plays from a graduate transfer (Jackson), a freshman (Smith) and a force (Brown). 

Then, the scenario that Ogunbowale seems to thrive in on occasion. Keeping your team from losing. The Irish down by two, 1.9 seconds on the clock and you are at the free throw line after getting fouled with a chance to end it to overtime. 

Piece of cake, right, for the senior who already had 30 points. Who is an 81% free throw shooter on the season.  Your team is 17-20 from the charity stripe for the game. You're five for six in the contest. Overtime ahead...no doubt about.

Nah.

She rimmed the first free throw out. She needed a miss on the second one to give ND a chance to rebound and get up a game tying or winning shot.

She makes it.

Baylor ball and they have fouls to give before free throws.

I have no doubt that she was trying to miss...but this "fate" stuff can be tricky. The miracle kid just struck out. Arike will go on and make good money in the WNBA, in Europe but that memory is bound to haunt her for a very long time. 

The ball bounces funny ways, sometimes. 

I'm not much for post-game celebrations and such, but I watched a bit of this one and was honestly worried Kim Mulkey was going to drop her grandson. Mulkey, obviously overcome with Cox's injury...a blubbering, hot mess in the post-game.

Like her or despise her, Mulkey was able to get the "bigs", has more on the way for next year, and finally got her third NCAA Championship win. A comeback to remember, tainted by the horrific injury to Cox.

No Griner. No Odyssey Sims. But...two post-players who learned how to work with each other, a couple of guards who could shoot and pass the ball to the post and managed to win despite the antics of their flamboyant coach on the sidelines. What might have been one of the biggest "folds" in the NCAA WBB Championship game history averted. 

Cox will be back, eventually. Maybe not in time for next season, though.  Baylor next year is minus Brown but Mulkey returns good talent. Notre Dame graduates four starters.

Cox... an inspiration to all, playing with a diabetic pump attached to her that provides insulin when it senses she needs a boost. A player that the Cards really went after a couple of years ago. We got Ciera Johnson instead. 

Baylor survives the comeback. Seeded #1 overall in the brackets, and living up to that pre-tournament ranking. They should send a thank-you, or condolence card -- something -- to Arike.

Volleyball and Soccer today...Cox on campus -- Sunday CARDINAL COUPLE

ACTION ON CAMPUS AND DOWNTOWN

Both the UofL Volleyball and women's Soccer teams have home contests today. Volleyball gets it started with a 12:30 p.m. match at the KFC YUM! Center against ACC foe Miami. 

A half-hour later...it'll be soccer time at Lynn Stadium...where Karen Ferguson-Dayes' Kickin' Cards go to the pitch against Pitt. 

Both squads are coming off wins in the ACC this week...so hop in the car and choose one! 

LAUREN COX ON CAMPUS FOR VISIT


The texts started rolling in late afternoon and continued into the evening:

"Walz with a tall, beautiful girl. Is is Cox?" 

"Walz sitting nine rows behind me with LC." 

"Coach just passed me going up the stairs in 227. He looks happy." 

"Paulie. Lauren Cox has a beautiful smile." 

And, yes...Lauren Cox is visiting the Louisville campus this weekend and was at the UofL vs. Samford football game last night. Reportedly, they were also going downtown to look at the KFC YUM! Center as well. 

I did see Walz on the field (maybe he was giving Bobby Petrino a few plays?) and then ascend the steps. Usual Walz...stopping to shake hands and talk with people on his way to his seat. 

Louisville is the third of five visits for the 6'4" (or 6'5"?...she seems very tall) post out of Flower Mound, TX. No word on how long she is here...but we wouldn't be surprised here at CARDINAL COUPLE if she takes in a little Volleyball today at the YUM! (she plays that sport also). 

And, yes....she does have a knockout smile. 

We sincerely hope she enjoys her visit and sees what a great sports town and community we have here in Louisville and if you see them...feel free to text me or shoot me and e-mail. Worldwide Jeff McAdams will be at Volleyball today and I'm sure he'll have an eye out for her. I'll either be at women's Soccer or visiting my mother-in-law at the hospital.

Getting the size is always wise -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

WBB MAKING TALL A MAJOR CALL IN RECRUITING

The old joke goes...

" A successful college men's basketball coach was asked why he was making year-in and year-out NCAA Basketball Tournament appearances. He guided the question-asker to his office door. There was a sign posted on it. It read:

ALL PEOPLE 6'8" OR TALL ARE WELCOME TO WALK IN HERE AT ANY TIME. UNDER 6'8"? SEE THE RECEPTIONIST FOR AN APPOINTMENT. 

And, so it goes in the world of college basketball. Talent in the post equates to rebounding, scoring, defense and wins.

Jeff Walz gets it...despite the occasional comment we get here that Walz needs to stop looking at 6'1" and shorter and get a roster graced with several 6'3" player and up.

Without any argument, I'll point out that the three generally accepted most talented players to play under Walz....Shoni Schimmel, Angel McCoughtry and Candyce Bingham...were under 6'3". But bigs are good and Walz, believe me...wants big. 

He has big on the current lineup ( Erin DeGrate, Myshia Hines-Allen, Sam Fuehring, Cortnee Walton), he is currently pursuing big (Kylee Shook, Brianna Dunham, Lauren Cox, Ciera Johnson.) and he'll continue to pursue big. Along with fast, talented, athletic and scorers.  

The ideal combination is that mix of scorers, players who can get the ball to the scorers, defenders and speed. It's like that perfect wave to a surfer, a wedge shot next to the pin for a golfer and fresh snow for a skier. 

There is hub-bub galore that Walz is still looking to add to his 2016 recruiting class. The offer to Jensen Caretti (who is going to make a HUGE impact wherever she ends up) indicates that. The fact that the coaching staff is still out there and 2016 prospects are scheduled for on-campus visits confirms it. 

If Jeff Walz says there is room on the roster...there is room on the roster. Caretti, Cox, Johnson...all aboard for the CARDINAL CANNONBALL! Kushkituah, Wyatt and those 2017 and future stars who the coaches are seeing and evaluating...grab a ticket and get on this train. 

The NCAA Championship teams (take a look back) over the past several years have had balance, no doubt...but a take-over player in the post with height. Stephanie Dolson, Brit Griner, Danielle Adams, Candace Parker...to name a few. They were surrounded by excellent players and wise coaches...no doubt...but tall and talented never hurts.

Attract the interest of the bigs and the rest will follow. The Cardinal Coaches are getting in to see and landing the bigs. And, there is always room to grow...

Lauren Cox making the visits with five universities -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

6'4" Center scheduled to visit UofL the weekend of Sept. 25th.

Flower Mound, TX is a town in northeast Texas that is northwest of Dallas and due west of Lewisville. The name is derived from a 12.5 acre, 50 foot tall mound in the city that produces beautiful wildflowers and Indian grasses and is maintained by private and civic groups plus the Army Corps of Engineers.

The mound is traditionally what the town is most famous for...but over the last couple of years...high school basketball phenomenon Lauren Cox has given the nature spot a run for its money in notoriety and fame. 

Cox is the #1 ranked prospect in the 2016 class and has narrowed her choices and visits down to Notre Dame, Tennessee, Louisville, Connecticut and Baylor. She's already visited the South Bend and Knoxville campuses and will tour Louisville's Belknap Campus the weekend of Sept. 25th. 

She's no stranger to several residents in the Derby City...having participated on this summer's USA U 19 team with Mariya Moore, Asia Durr and Jeff Walz. 

Her visit will include scrutiny of how the players and coaches get along on and off the court. Besides wanting to play on a good team...another emphasis is being in a place she is comfortable. 

Cox also excels at Volleyball and has already taken the court for that at Flower Mound High School. Her basketball stats for her junior year are most impressive...named Gatorade Player of the Year for Texas and averaging 21.7 points, 15.4 rebounds and 5.2 blocked shots. She led her team to their first state semifinal appearance last year as well.

On a national setting, she's been part of teams that have won three consecutive gold medals...beginning with the 2013 FIBA Americas U-16 squad, last year's U-17 team and the U-19 team this summer. 

Her goal is to improve by getting stronger and preparing herself for the faster college pace. A deceptive post player who can stretch a defense out to the arc...Cox would flourish in the up-and-down the court style that Jeff Walz's
squads excel at. She's a battler in the paint, tenacious on defense. 

Cox hasn't announced a timeline for making a decision yet and will conclude her visits with stops at Connecticut the weekend of Oct 16th. and Baylor the following weekend. She experienced the thrill and excitement of the KFC YUM! Center last season and the Cardinal coaches have made in-home visits with her.


The obvious question would be...what would convince her to be a Cardinal? Significant playing time right off the bat would seem to be a very real possibility and the competition in the always tough ACC is an instant draw for any talented high school star. The KFC YUM! Center is one of, if not the best, college basketball facilities in the nation and Cardinal women's basketball fans appreciate and support the WBB squad by attending and avidly rooting for the players.


Jeff Walz is widely recognized as one of the best coaches in the women's game and is setting the building blocks for a National Championship. His potential 2016 class is already in the top ten with Jazmine Jones, Kylee Shook, Bionca Dunham and Sydney Zambrotta and Walz has indicated there is room for another "big" or two on the Cardinal Caravan. Post players flourish when there is a exemplary contingent of guards on a roster and Louisville is certainy not lacking in that aspect. 

Mulkey, Geno, Muffet, Holly or Jeff? 

Undoubtedly a tough decision for a high school senior to make. An honor to be considered by the five-some. The big-city-but-down-home atmosphere that surrounds Louisville, though...is a unique and positive pull to young men and women who are considering their student-athlete pursuits. If she loves the aura of The Flower Mound, Lauren will go nuts over Iroquois and Cherokee Parks and the beautiful floral displays there.

You see a lot of people smiling on campus...Louisville women's basketball is revered by fans. The best college sports town in America. The best facilities. The 'Ville'.

And...finally...her first name is the same as Coach Walz's wife. I'm seeing some manifest destiny here...

Kylee Shook was first 2016 commit for Cards...Lauren Cox sings -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

6'4" SENIOR ALREADY ALL-TIME LEADING SHOT BLOCKER IN COLORADO HSGBB

As we found out yesterday...Sydney Zambrotta is the second commit of the 2016 UofL WBB class. Turn back the calendar almost six months ago for the first....6'4" post Kylee Shook from Colorado Springs, CO. 

She is already the leading shot-blocker in Colorado girls high school basketball history and still has her senior year to play. Shook is rated #53 nationally by ASGR and the #11 post for 2016 by ESPN.com.

Shook's height is also complemented with her inside-outside skills and range out to trifecta arc. She's also on course to becoming the all-time leading rebounder for Colorado girls high school basketball. 

Regardless of how many more girls are added to the class of 2016...the current numbers being speculated are maybe 2-3...the Cards are already off to a strong start to complement the current roster of five freshmen, a red-shirt freshmen, three sophomores and a junior.

And you just never know what else the mad scientist might have down in the laboratory ready to spring upon an appreciative but unsuspecting fan base and the 2015-16 foes.  

The future looks bright indeed for Cardinal women's basketball. 

Future opponents will no doubt be "Shook" up by the Cards post play.

SYDNEY ZAMBROTTA, OTHERS TO MAKE WBB VISITS

Christ the King's Sydney Zambrotta is on campus today to make a visit with Jeff Walz's UofL WBB program. The coaches fell in love with her during the summer and the talented guard will begin her senior season of high school hoops at the same school of Cardinal standout Bria Smith.

Also scheduled in for official visits are:

Sept 4th -- Jazmine Jones
Sept 25th -- Lauren Cox
Oct. 22nd -- Natalie Chou and Ciera Johnson

There will undoubtedly be more. Cox played with Mariya Moore on the U19 team that took the gold in Russia this summer. Jones is a 5'10" off guard out of Tallahassee, FL who is ranked 4th at her position and is being heavily recruited as well.  

Chou is a 6'0" guard that plays for Plano (TX) West and the #3 ranked player in her position. Ciera Johnson, a talented 6'4" low post out of Duncanville, TX.

USA U 19 downs Argentina 89-39 -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

MOORE NAILS THREE THREES IN WIN

MOORE FOR THREEEEE!!!!

The USA U 19 women's basketball team advanced out of the Sweet Sixteen yesterday (we're shocked!) with a 50-point win over winless Argentina. This one was played at Vidnoje instead of Chekhov (seems they have two sites for these games...) and was played without Jeff Walz...who was still in Chekhov with shuttle issues. He tweeted:

"After shuttle issues Jacob and I weren't able 2 make game. Finishing Canada scout for tomorrow, Enjoying first half." 

OK, Coach...it happens...but I'm pretty sure they're playing the quarterfinals on Friday. Unless you know something we don't. (Who wants to bet he spent the day at the Moscow Zoo?) 

It's 47 km (that's 30 miles to you and I) between the two facilities. It would be like getting stuck in Shelbyville trying to get to the KFC YUM! Center....so we'll give him a pass and it looks like he got to see a good game in Chekhov...Canada maybe pulling the only upset of the day in knocking off Serbia.

At Vidnoje, meanwhile...

USA and Argentina were deadlocked in a 2-2 thriller (yawn...) 150 seconds into the contest when the USA took off on a 19-0 run over the next six minutes. Mariya Moore, who got the start, canned a three to put USA up 14-2. The first ten minutes mercifully ended for Argentina with USA leading 28-4.   

Mariya sat the first seven minutes of the second quarter but it didn't seem to affect Team USA...they held a 40-12 lead when she came in the game. She hooked up with a nice assist to Napheesa Collier at the 1:22 mark to make it 45-15 and USA led 48-18 at the half. 

Maybe the Argentinians were wishing they were in Chekhov at this point, too...or at the Zoo with Walz and Jacob.

Mariya started the second half and had an immediate impact by nailing a three for USA's first points of the half at the 8:38 mark. With 7:41 to go, she threaded a pass to A'ja Wilson for a basket +1.

Another Moore three tickled the nets with 6:44 showing on the clock and Argentina called a timeout...trailing 59-20. Two free throws pushed her point total to 11 with 3:48 remaining and the score stood at 63-22. A nifty interior pass by Moore to Chatrice White led to basket with 99 seconds left in the quarter and USA held 69-26 with ten minutes to play. 

Moore, Dangerfield, Wilson, Thomas and Collier got a well-deserved rest in the fourth quarter...and USA rolled on to the 89-39 win. Things got a tad chippy late...Lauren Cox and Ali Patberg were decked on a couple of aggressive fouls and Cox delivered a pretty solid elbow of her own that sent the Argentina center to the floor. 

On a side note, I've fallen in love with Ali Patberg's game. So much hustle, defensive intensity and a better-than-average shot. Muffet McGraw is going to love her, too....

USA gets Canada next. Also advancing into the "Great Eight" were France, Australia, Belgium, Russia, Spain and China...who beat Taiwan. Really? All that way just to play Taiwan? They could have met in Hong Kong...

Paulie Observations:

-- It's nice to see Sasha Baron Cohen has found work again...I'm pretty sure that was him imitating Borat as the PA Announcer during the game. 

-- The Argentina team had DirecTv sponsorship's on their jerseys. Now I know why the audio kept going out. They also did this crazy kind of circle dance around the half-court emblem before the game started and were chanting something. It probably wasn't USA! USA!

-- In the "Son, are you old enough to drive?" category...the male referee looked to be maybe in his freshmen year of high school. He blew the whistle, though, with the aplomb of Dee Kanter on a nationally televised game. 

-- Hadn't noticed this before...but the shot clock violation horn sounded like a car alarm going off. Or, maybe it was a car alarm? Maybe it was Walz trying to sneak into the arena through an unauthorized entrance...in any event, let's hope the ACC doesn't adopt this "horrid horn" policy...

(Moore) of the same...USA blasts Egypt 104-41 to close Pool Play -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

MOORE'S 15 HELP USA ERASE EGYPT

The USA couldn't have been too worried about playing Egypt yesterday in the final round of pool play at the FIBA U 19 World Championships...after all, the Egyptians were 0-2 in games against Spain and China...teams that USA dispatched with relative ease. I know, you never overlook anyone...but this one seemed to be a romp-waiting-to-happen. 

For the first five minutes, though...Egypt looked like they belonged. A combination of shots that wouldn't fall and a slow start had the USA trailing Egypt 7-6 halfway through the first quarter. Five of Egypt's points had come from incoming WKU freshman Nadine Salaawi. She could be a good one for Michelle Clark Heard.


It was time shake it up a bit so USA head coach Dawn Staley brought in Shakayla Thomas, Lauren Cox, Crystal Dangerfield, Chatrice White and Jeff Walz...oops, Ali Patberg. The mass substitution worked and USA went on a 8-2 run to take a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

It just got worse for Egypt after that. 

52-18 at halftime....another buzzer beater by USA...this time Gabby Ortiz with the putback to end the half. Egypt played on a even keel with the USA squad in the third quarter...but trailed 80-41 at the end of three...getting their final basket of the game with 35 seconds in the third.

You read that right. USA pitched a 24-0 shutout in the final quarter. 

"Don't worry about it, Tommy. I got this covered." 

Mariya Moore and "Shaq" Thomas led USA with 15 points. "A" Wilson added 14 and Lauren Cox had an impressive 10 points and 17 rebounds against the diminutive Egyptians.

Moore stat line looked pretty decent. 5/6 from the floor, including 3/4 from three point range. She also hit both her free throws. No steals and 14 minutes of playing time. All the USA players saw at least 14 minutes and they all scored. 

So...the USA squad advances into the round of 16 and will face up against 0-3 Argentina today. It's a 10:30 a.m. start, according to the USA Basketball site and can be watched live at YouTube.com/FIBA

Other undefeated team are Russia, Australia and Belgium.

Paulie Observations

-- I'm gonna admit I didn't watch this one from start to finish...just the highlights...but if Lauren Cox could play her entire career against Egypt, she'd be the next "Stewie".

-- We want asst. coaches observations! All the quotes come out of Staley...and, yes, she is the head coach...but KBA and Walz are working just as hard. Give them the damn microphone...

-- USA had a 63-20 rebounding edge. A lot of that was because Egypt shot 25%. 

-- China knocked off Spain 66-63 yesterday to finish second in the Group B pool. Out of the eight games yesterday, USA was, by far, the team who scored the most points. Next was Australia with 87 against South Korea. 

-- And, in the "Gee, ya think so?"/Captain Obvious quote of yesterday...we bring you Coach Staley's observations on playing Argentina:

" We're going to have to get the ball inside." 

Uh....yeah....that could work.

Or maybe USA could stand behind the half-court line and bomb threes for four quarters?

Moore, Durr named to USA Women's U-19 team -- Monday Cardinal Couple

TWO CARDS HEADED TO RUSSIA FOR USA

Incoming freshman Asia Durr and returning sophomore Mariya Moore are two of the twelve that have been selected to represent USA Basketball in the U-19 women's World Championships this July in Chekhov, Russia.

Duke star and Owensboro's Rebecca Greenwell has been named to 2015 USA World University Games Team.  



The selections for U-19...announced on Sunday...also include three UConn signees...Napheesa Collier, Crystal Dangerfield and Katie Lou Samuelson. The squad will have two other ACC performers in Shakayla Thomas (FSU) and Azure Stevens (Duke). Others on the roster include:

Kristine Angiwe - California
Chatrice White - Illinois
Gabby Ortiz - Oklahoma
Lauren Cox - uncommitted

Cox has visited Louisville and is one of the most sought after players in the class of 2016.

Having Walz coaching her for the summer is a great advantage, one would think, is possibly getting the talented 6'6" post to don the red and black. 

Giving Walz some extra time before the 2015-16 season starts with Moore and Durr is also a reason to celebrate. Seeing how the girls perform against the best in the world will no doubt be helpful when the Cards face Duke, UNC and other talented ACC squads later this college hoops year. 

Durr, a veteran of three previous USA teams, is also representing the USA in the FIBA 3x3 U-18 World Championships in Debrecen, Hungary from June 4-7. 

WKU head coach Michelle Clark Heard will also have a busy summer...named as an assistant to the 2015 USA Pan-American Games team.
