Better than par...Louisville women's Golf -- Tuesday Cardinal Couple

Golf Academic Honors

Academic honors are becoming par for the course for the Women's Golf team, with four being named Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-Academic Scholars.

Graduating seniors Emily Haas and Katie Petrino picked up two of the spots, with rising senior Laura Restrepo and rising junior Louise Oxner picked up the other two spots.  In just 3 years, head coach Courtney Trimble now can claim 13 players collecting this academic honor.  The four this year tops all of the 11 ACC schools with women's golf teams.

Collectively, the team sported a 3.72 GPA, which may be the highest of any sport at UofL (no details on that, yet, but that's a pretty impressive team score!)

And lest you think these folks are taking underwater basket weaving as a major, Haas graduated with a degree in Biology, Petrino in Business, and Restrepo and Oxner are working towards degrees in Finance.

Swimming The WUGs

Several UofL athletes are competing in the World University Games, and I'm doing my best to piece together ongoing results.

The US went 1-2 in the 200meter breast stroke prelims with UofL's Andrea Cottrell claiming the second spot.  The two US swimmers were in the same heat, so that bodes well for tomorrow's final in the event.

Meanwhile, Tanja Kylliainen finished in 10th in the finals for the 400meter Individual Medley, and 9th in the 200meter IM.  Tanja, always a Cardinal, is the WUGs representing Finland.

DREAM v TULSA

The Atlanta Dream look to keep the winning ways going when they host the Tulsa Shock tonight at 8 p.m. It'll be an ESPN2 game.

Tulsa is 8-4 but has lost Skylar Diggins for the rest of the reason. The Dream looks to get back to .500 (5-6) with a win tonight.

Anyone want to surmise on a over/under for Shoni playing time?

Golf ends season with 12th place finish in NCAA Regional -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

CARDS WRAP UP 2014-15 WITH REGIONAL APPEARANCE

The University of Louisville women's golf team finished 12th in the NCAA South Bend regional Saturday...capping a three day effort of 902 strokes. Conference opponents Duke and Wake Forest finished first and second in the qualifier for the NCAA Championships. 

Leading the way for the Cards was redshirt junior Katie Mitchell with a 36th. place finish and a 220 three day total. Senior Emily Haas carded a 226 and fellow senior Katie Petrino toured the three days with a 232. 

Junior Laura Restrepo had a two under par the final day and shot a 227. Louise Oxner had a triplicate...three days at 78...and 234.

In addition to Haas and Petrino, the Cards graduate Haley Andreas and Sara Karlsson. 

Returning with Mitchell, Oxner and Restrepo are Shannon Gramley and freshman Molly Skapic.

Tuesday Cardinal Couple

Golf in Second in Miami

Some familiar names leading the Cardinals club swingers into second place at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, FL.  Senior Emily Haas and junior Katie Mitchell ended the day tied for fifth with 1-under par on the individual leaderboard, but the Cardinals continue to play consistently across the whole team resulting in a second place team score at the end of the first day of play.

With an even par 71, junior Laura Restrepo lands in 11th place in the individual scoring, and senior Katie Petrino finished with a 1 over which is good for 21st position on the leaderboard.

Molly Skapik, a freshman, will start play off tomorrow for the Cards at 7:30am, and starts from 30th position and a 3-over par.

We wish the Cardinal club swingers well, and hope they bring some of the warm weather back with them to the Derby City.  The Hurricane Invitational is a three day event, wrapping up Wednesday.

Speaking of Wednesday...and Weather

The Louisville Lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon against Duquesne has been moved forward to a one eleven o'clock start from the original start time of 3pm at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

The change in start time is in anticipation of unpleasant weather for Wednesday which is forecast to be a pretty disgusting mix of rain, sleet, snow, and probably just about every other type of precipitation that none of us really wants to deal with at this point in the winter.  Switching over to just snow after about two or three o'clock.

About the only weather condition that will cancel a game

for Lacrosse would be if there we enough accumulation of snow that the field couldn't be cleared, and that doesn't look to be the case.  For safety reasons, I imagine a temporary stoppage would happen for lightning, but that also doesn't look to be a factor on Wed.

The forecast for Saturday, however, doesn't look too awful...sunny and a high of 46...for the next home game, against William and Mary.  That will be a bit chilly to be sitting on open bleachers, but at least it should be dry and sunny to warm spectators a bit.

SOFTBALL FINISHES 3-1 OVER WEEKEND


The University of Louisville Softball's first fall exhibition weekend got off in fine fashion with three wins in four games at Ulmer Stadium. UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall played a lot of freshmen, got solid pitching from Maryssa Becker and freshman Madi Norman and scored 28 runs in the four games against Bellarmine, Wallace State and EKU.

SATURDAY

Louisville 3 - Bellarmine 0

Freshman Madi Norman started the fall exhibition slate in the circle for the Cards and delivered a one-hit, seven inning performance against the Knights. Senior Whitney Arion went 2-3 and scored two run. Reshirt freshman Nicole Pufahl went 2-3 also and scored the other Louisville run.

EKU 5 - Louisville 3 

The Colonels jumped on starter Maryssa Becker for three runs in the top of the first and the Cards could not overcome the early assault...losing by two to the Richmond, KY school. Arion provided a two-run fence clearer in the bottom of the first for Louisville. The Cards could only manage one score the rest of the seven innings.

SUNDAY

Louisville 10 - Wallace State 5

The Cards broke out the bats late against Wallace State...breaking a 5-5 tie in the fifth with five runs on four hits and two walks. LSU junior transfer Hailey Smith went 3-4 and Madi Norman picked up her second win of the exhibition slate with the seven-inning win.

Louisville 12 - Bellarmine 1


The Cards used 12 hits to double-digit defeat the Knights. Sophomore Morgan Meyer went 3-4 and Pufahl had another strong day at the plate with a 3-3 performance. Maryssa Becker mastered in the circle...allowing just one run and five hits in seven innings. 

COACH PEARSALL ON THE WEEKEND:

"We saw some good things from our younger players this weekend," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We were missing a few of our players from the lineup, but it was good to be able to move people around. Obviously we have a lot to work on, but we will continue to improve."

WOMEN'S GOLF TRAVELS TO COLORADO

The University of Louisville women's golf team is taking its first true road trip of the year, when it

travels west to the Golfweek Conference Challenge that features an 18-team field in Wolcott, Colo.

The three-day event, which lasts from Monday, Sept. 22-24, is being held at the Tom Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.

The par-72, 54-hole competition is designed to pit one school from 18 different conferences, with Louisville representing the Atlantic Coast Conference. Other teams participating include Colorado (Pac-12), Denver (Summit League), two-time defending champion Pepperdine (West Coast Conference), and Tennessee (Southeastern Conference).

The Cardinals are slated to utilize a different lineup from the first two competitions, which consists of Emily Haas, Katie Mitchell, Katie Petrino, Shannon Gramley, and Laura Restrepo.

Louisville is coming off its second-consecutive team title to the open the year, capturing its third-consecutive Cardinal Cup title on Sept. 16. After the first day, which encompassed two 18-hole rounds, the Cardinals trailed the leader nine strokes. Led by Haas, Louisville completed the comeback with the best third-round score for a six-stroke victory.

Haas carded a 1-under-par 71 in the third round to earn a fourth-place finish in the individual standings, while Mitchell fired a 1-over-par 73 through the last 18 to tie for fifth. Petrino (tied for 11th) and Oxner (tied for 14th) each finished in the top 15.

For the season, Haas leads the team with a 72.40 stroke average through five rounds, with four rounds even or below par. Mitchell and Restrepo each boast 74.60 averages.

UofL fans may face a dilemma Friday night when trying to choose between watching Softball's first game in the NCAA Tournament or Shoni Schimmel's first regular season game in the WNBA.

Softball's contest against LSU will be shown on ESPN at 8:30 8:00pm EDT. 

Shoni's debut in the WNBA starts at 7:30 on Fox Sports South.

Hopefully, the remote control doesn't die tonight or I can find a sports bar that will show both.

Never fear, we'll recap both events here at CARDINAL COUPLE in the Saturday edition and discuss them on our weekly radio show @ Crescent Hill Radio.

CARDS VS LSU

The Bayou Bengal softball team comes out of the SEC and complied a 35-22 record this season. They went 13-11 in conference, 19-11 at home, 11-9 as visitors and 5-2 at neutral sites.

Their SEC Conference Championship Tournament run was stopped by UK by a score of 4-3. It was the only appearance they had against the Cats during the season and UK won in extra innings.

The heavy hitters for Louisiana State University are AJ Andrews (.339) and Savannah Jaquish ( .335, 13 HR, 48 RBI's)

In the circle, the main two pitchers are Baylee Corbello ( 17-8,  ERA 2.55) and Ashley Czechner ( 13-12, ERA 3.45)

The Cards could go with either Rachel Le Coq or Maryssa Becker in the circle to quell the LSU bats. LeCoq has had a great last few games and her arm shut down UCF and USF in the AAC Tournament. Becker has been the ace of the staff most of the season. Coach Sandy Pearsall could use both or turn to Caralisa Connell to deliver the strikes.

It's a double elimination format in regional play...so Louisville could face either Arizona or Boston U. after this one.

Becker was named yesterday to the NCFA All-Central Region second team as a pitcher/utility player. She's the first UofL freshman to get this honor since 2000 when Keola Calderon was named to the All-South Region second team.

Becker's stats have been impressive. A 2.08 ERA and 137 strikeouts. At the plate, Becker hit .312 with 25 RBI's and scored 22 runs.

All the honorees are eligible for selection to one of three NFCA Division I All-America teams...which will be announced on Wednesday, May 28th.

Sophomore Emily Haas was named to the Capitol One Academic, All-District II First team. It's the second straight year she's garnered this award.

Haas has a 3.98 grade point average and plans on majoring in Biology. ( Shame on the professor who gave her a "B". )

Shankapotumus you are, teacher!

Haas was second on the team in stroke average with a 73.3 average and her ten-foot birdie putt in the AAC Conference Tournament on the 18th. hole in the third day of competition gave the Cards the championship.

Yes, A-Tayy is on the Minnesota Lynx squad and Shoni is a member of the Atlanta Dream! They both play tonight...Minnesota at 7 p.m. and Atlanta at 7:30. It is the first time that two UofL first year players have made an WNBA roster in the same season and we wish #23 and #31 the best!

We'll recap their games tomorrow...here at the site and on the air. (We'll throw in Angel's stats, too. She's a pretty good player too, you know.)

Cardinal Couple Tuesday-Selection Monday

Selection Monday

Yesterday was Selection Monday for the NCAA Tournament.  What?  You didn't know?

72 teams and 18 individuals were announced as participants in the NCAA Women's Golf Championship to be held between May 8th and 23rd.  The Louisville women were guaranteed a position in the Championship, due to having won the American Athletic Conference Championship, but tuned in to find out their seeding and in which region they would be playing.

The answers are: 13th seed, and in the East Region.

The East Region is hosted by Florida State and will be played at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, FL.  All regionals will be played between May 8th and 10th, with the National Championship occurring May 20th through the 23rd at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Sophomore Laura Restrepo leads the Cardinals with a 72.68 stroke average. She is ranked 63rd in the nation by Golfstat. Junior Emily Haas ranks second on the team with a 73.14. She's 9th, according to Golfstat. Junior Katie Petrino has a 73.71 average and comes in at 142nd with Golfstat. Senior Tara Lyons and freshman Shannon Gramerly fill out the usual fivesome the Cards put out on the links.

In addition to Louisville, American Conference members UCF and SMU also made the cut for regional play, with UCF being a sixth seed and also in the East Region.  Meanwhile, SMU got an 18th seed in the Central Region.

Softball Tidbits

Last Home Game

The Kentucky Wildcats come in to Ulmer Stadium tomorrow night for Softball.  This is a ticketed
event, unlike most softball games at Ulmer, and the stadium is expected to sell-out, but there is always room to watch from the outfield berm, which still provides excellent vantage points for the game.

With Ulmer having been newly renovated and more seats added, its expected that there will be a record crowd on hand.

The rains are expected to clear and Ulmer has fantastic drainage and a world class ground-crew tending it.  With the forecast calling for rain ending overnight Tuesday night, with only a slim chance for rain remaining, it should make for a great evening.

First pitch is at 6pm.  This will likely be your last chance to see this year's six seniors play at home, with the last three regular season games being at Memphis.

Softball Spotlight

 

For the past several weeks, Softball has let one of the players take over the @UofLSoftball twitter account one afternoon of the week.  While a date hasn't been set for this week's Spotlight, we're expecting Taner Fowler to step up to the virtual mic.  Expect about an hour of good fun on twitter as Taner answers your questions tweeted to @UofLSoftball.  As soon as we find out a date and time for this week's Softball Spotlight, we'll let you know.

Taner is one of the graduating seniors and is frequently listed as Utility for her position and this year has showed it.  She's played just about equal time at catcher, first base, third base and left field at various times this season.  Taner is from Morganfield, Kentucky, in Union County about midway between Owensboro and Paducah.

Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- Women's Golf Wins AAC Championship!!

Excitement plus in the final round of the AAC Women's Golf Championship Tournament at the Hammock Beach Resort...Cardinal junior Emily Haas sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to put Louisville past UCF by one stroke for the title.

The Cards had a final round total of 299 to overtake the Golden Knights...finishing with a 3-day total of 915.

Haas had a 54 hole score of 223 and finished second overall in individual scores. Her team-low 71 Tuesday helped guide Louisville to their fifth conference title in school history.

SMU came in third with a 928 and had the individual low score champ in Jenny Ragland who beat Haas with a 218.

The win gives UofL an automatic spot in the NCAA Regionals that will take place May 8-10. Louisville will learn which of the three regional sites they are headed to on April 28th.

Sophomore Laura Restrepo tied for seventh with a score of 229. Tara Lyons, a senior, carded a 231...good enough for a tie for tenth. Junior Katie Petrino finished at 234 and freshman Shannon Gramley totaled 236.

A great come-from-behind on the final day win for Courtney Trimble's squad. Congrats to the chip-and-putt Cards for adding another trophy to the UofL showcase and heading to women's collegiate golf's "big dance".

Coach hobnobbing with celebs and NFL players. Who woulda thunk it seven years ago when he was trying to get Angel to roll off screens and Dez to look for the open player..

Also, the event is at the KFC YUM! Center...no foreign territory for Coach. If it all gets a little stuffy, he can always retreat to his office in the facility and watch a little game film. Or open up the practice court on the north side and coach up the attendees on layups and free throws.

Louisville women's golf is in third place after the first round of the AAC Golf Championship Tournament at Hammock Beach Resort on Sunday.

The Central Florida Golden Knights are first on the leaderboard as teams battled 15-20 mile-per-hour wind gusts during round one. UCF finished 19-over-par (307) while Cincinnati recorded a 23-over-par 311 for second place. Louisville charted a 26-over-par 314 for third.

Cincinnati's Olivia Dose is the individual leader with a two-over-par 74 through 18 holes. Andrea Malek (Cincinnati) and Emily Haas (Louisville) are tied for second at 75 (+3). UCF's Ashley Holder and SMU's Jenny Haglund are both tied for fourth with four-over-par 76 scores. Laura Restrepo is tied for 9th at 78.

Tara Lyons fired an 80, Katie Petrino finished at 81 and Shannon Gramley carded and 82 as the other UofL participants.

The second round will begin at 8 a.m. eastern on Monday.

The Louisville rowing team had a successful weekend of racing at the Clemson Invite earning five wins overall, including a trio of victories by the second varsity eight boat.

The Cardinals' second varsity eight crew of Sophie St. Martin (coxswain), Elise Valantine, Lucy Wilshier, Lizzie DeVries, Cynthia Doyle, Kylen Pattermann, Hanna Spittel, Abbie Wade and Katie Nord finished ahead of crews from No. 13 UCLA, No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 16 Cornell in winning the three races on Lake Hartwell. The boat's fastest time of the weekend came in Sunday's first session when it defeated a field of six other crews with a time of 7:04.4. In addition, Louisville's second varsity four crew of Annie Pape (coxswain), Emma Melton, Jenny Marler, Paula Gollnick and Kylie Noltemeyer added a pair of wins defeating crews from both UCLA and Cornell. The Cardinals also earned runner-up finishes over the two days in the varsity eight, varsity four and third varsity eight boats. "I'm really proud of how the team has handled everything since the last race and especially the way we competed this weekend. They showed a lot of attention to detail in training, which was important because we had to get as much as we could out of our practices and it showed this weekend," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland.  "The weather was certainly a factor again this weekend but we handled it much better. It was nice seeing everything come together for us. The mileage on the Ohio River has certainly paid off for this team."
 Up next, the Cardinals will have a week away from competition to prepare for a series of races in Ann Arbor, Mich., on May 3. Louisville is scheduled to compete against the host Wolverines as well as No. 3 ranked Ohio State. "Now, we have to turn our attention to completing the semester in the classroom with finals and also training for the races against Ohio State and Michigan in two weeks," said Copeland. "We have a plan for this time of the season and we know it works. We'll get plenty of rest and do a lot of studying to put ourselves in a good position for the racing in Michigan."

Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- Catching up on the Cards

( Cardinal Couple columnist and radio personality Jenny O'Bryan checks in with the "hump day" edition of CC. Today, she looks at golfers, hoopsters, kickers and sticks!)

The golf team finished the fall season with a trip to San Antonio, Texas in the Alamo Invitational.  The team finished overall in 9^th place with a score of 872.  Oklahoma won the event with an 840, LSU second with an 848 and Arkansas 3^rd with a score of 851. 

Emily Haas led the team finishing tied for 17^th.   Laura Restrepo finished tied at 22^nd, Katie Petrino finish tied at 50^th and Tara Lyons tied at 61^st. 

The team will open their spring season February 17.
 

Congratulations to the women of golf as they finish up a strong fall schedule.

GETTING THEIR KICKS

Several polls were released on Tuesday with 3 of our women’s teams ranked. 

Soccer finished the regular season this past weekend earning a first round bye in The American Conference Tournament.  The kickin’ Cards finished the season with an overall record of 12-4-1 and were rewarded with an appearance in the polls. 

In the rankings for the first time this season the Cards came in at 24^th in the Soccer America Poll and 25^th in the Top Drawer Soccer Poll.  As Jeff mentioned in the Tuesday comment section the typical poll in soccer that is referenced is the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).   In this poll the Cards are getting votes but have not quite cracked the top 25. 

Regardless of the polling, the soccer team is getting some recognition for a great season played.  Having earned the first round bye, you can see your Soccer Cards at Cardinal Park on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. matching up against the winner of Memphis vs. Houston on Friday evening.   (Louisville beat both teams in regular season play). 

Get out and see the team this Sunday!

THE FLOCK PREPARES FOR TOURNEY

As we have been talking about on Cardinal Couple Radio hour, the Field Hockey Cards have had a fantastic season.    The team heads in to the final weekend of regular season play, at home at Trager Field, this weekend before Big East Tournament play starts next weekend. 

The most recent polling has the hockey team heading in to the final weekend ranked 14^th in the nation!   Get out and support your favorite sticks this weekend and join the team for senior day against Kent State on Sunday.

HOOPS DE DOO!

FINALLY, basketball season is here!  With one week to go before the lone exhibition game of the season for our basketball team, the first 2013-14 USA Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday.    The coaches ranked Louisville 5^th in the nation coming in behind Connecticut, Duke, Stanford and Tennessee.    Check here for the full poll:

Connecticut enters the season as the prohibitive favorite to win the National Championship ( hmm...how’d that work out for Baylor?) and received all but one vote from the coaches, Tennessee receiving a lone vote.
