Call it what you will...it'll happen today down by the Ohio River -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Tuesday's Cardinals Summer Festival Cancelled

(alas...another photo op with Louie the Cardinal Bird and Jazmine Jones slips by...)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Due to anticipated inclement weather, the University of Louisville's Cardinals
Summer Festival which had been scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 16) at Captain's Quarters Riverside Grille has been cancelled.  Thunderstorms are forecast during the outdoor event and concern for fan safety caused the cancellation.  No makeup date will be scheduled.
The UofL fall sports season kicks off this weekend with Women's Soccer opening their third season in Lynn Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 21 vs. Indiana State at 1 p.m.  Saturday (Aug. 20) is the first chance to see the defending ACC Champion UofL volleyball team as they host their Red and Black Scrimmage in Cardinal Arena beginning at 6 p.m.  Men's Soccer's first regular season action is next Friday (Aug. 26) while the football team hosts Charlotte on Thursday, Sept. 1.  Field Hockey will open its home schedule on Sept. 3 vs. Brown.  For more information on upcoming events, visit www.GoCards.com.

SUMMER FESTIVAL TO FEATURE COACHES, PLAYERS, RAFFLES

The annual gathering down at Captain's Quarters used to be known as the Cardinal Caravan. Someone in marketing must have had a brainstorm or maybe the St. Louis baseball team (who has a similarly named event) may have protested..whatever the reasoning...the event has been re-named Cardinals Summer Festival and it will take place down by the Ohio River this afternoon/evening at the restaurant off River Road.

Food, beverage, inflatables, free schedules, coaches, players, raffles, probably Sean Moth and sweltering heat all in store for UofL fans as the fall sports season draws near.

Sonja at Cardinal Caravan with former writer Sandy Walker
These have been fun events over the years. I've gotten some great photos and interviews with UofL coaches and student-athletes in the past. One of my favorite photos of Sonja came from there (with Tia Gibbs). The fish sandwich at Captain's Quarters is worh the drive. I expect no differently this year, no matter what it's called. Let's just hope the rain stays away...there have been a couple of these in the past where mother nature has unloaded the skies on the festivities.

Sonja won't be there this year. I'll carry on somehow without her.
It's one of the few times each year that your intrepid columnist gets over to that part of the county and I've wondered aloud each year why they continue to hold the event there when there are other venues that would make more sense regionally. This used to be a three or four stop caravan...with stops in Shelbyville, Southern Indiana...southwestern Jefferson County and other outlying areas from the campus. Coaches would comment on climbing on the buses and going to see the fans.

No such travelling that I know of for 2016 has been announced yet. Maybe that's another reason why they could have changed the name. They did try concept this a few weeks back at the UofL Golf Club in Simpsonville. Thunder storms were expected, they came and the event was cancelled in advance.

It matters not, I suppose, what this gathering is called. Goodbye Caravan, hello Summer Festival. The structure and purpose remains the same...to get the coaches and players out to talk to, shake hands with and pose for pictures with the fans.

Always a good thing.

Cardinal Couple Thursday

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

(Cardinal Couple's Jeff McAdams brings us his report on the CARDINAL CARAVAN activities Thursday. Last seen, he was in one of the inflatable bouncies...coaching Maggie Ruckenbrod on her pickoff throws while Katie Keller and Katie George were making sno-cones for the UofL catcher to throw at Paulie)

Cardinal Caravan Rolled Through Captain's Quarters

Today is the last day for the Cardinal Caravan, with a 6pm stop in Shelbyville at the Fairgrounds Pavilion.

I hadn't been able to attend a Cardinal Caravan event before Tuesday at Captain's Quarters, and I'm glad I finally got the chance to make it to one of the stops this year.  Many of the UofL sports teams were represented with coaches and student-athletes, and more than a few with trophies.

Many of the Cardinal Couple favorites were on-hand.  Party-Crasher-in-Chief Jeff Walz was there, and by my perhaps-biased judgement, drew a larger round of applause than Rick Pitino did.  Surprised at having a mic stuck in their faces and being asked to say a few words were Bria Smith and Nita Slaughter, but both presented themselves well, thanked the crowds for the support at the basketball games - a familiar, but no-doubt heartfelt, refrain - and then strolled off to mix and mingle with the crowd.

Coach Pearsall came up and introduced 2nd team All-American 2nd baseman Katie Keller, and don't-try-to-steal-second-on Maggie Ruckenbrod.  I haven't been shy in pointing out Ruckenbrod's amazing job of picking off base-runners at second, both lead-offs and attempted steals, and apparently word is finally getting out.  In addition to having an amazing record of picking off runners, Ruckenbrod also had the fewest number of runners attempt to steal second on her in the country.  Quite a tandem with Maggie firing to Katie at 2nd.

Next up was Todd Sharp, head of the spirit squads at UofL, and he dropped a tidbit of news that I hadn't yet heard.  Apparently the NCAA is now considering "Stunt" an "emerging sport".  In NCAA terms, that is a sport that has developed in a way that can be competed with a formalized rule structure and a governing body, and has 20 or more varsity teams.  Stunt's governing body is USA Cheer and incorporates aspects, techniques, and skillsets of cheerleading.  To anyone that knows much about the spirit squads at UofL, this will come as no surprise...UofL is competing in the sport, and also unsurprisingly, is doing extremely well...as in, has won all three National Championships contested thus far.  Looks like we may officially have another women's sport to cover here at the Cardinal Couple in a couple of years.

Katie George and Emily Juhl made an appearance for Volleyball.  I thought for a moment that Katie
George, who was also this year's in-game host for the baseball team, and Sean Moth were about to fight it out for control of the mic.  Both Katie and Emily spoke about how wonderful it was to play in front of large crowds at the KFC Yum! Center.  Emily mentioned that they were really worried about playing in such a large facility, and whether the crowd noise would get lost in such a large expanse.  It was a pleasant surprise to the team to see and hear how loud the Louisville crowd got in support.

Kellie Young and Monica Negron made an appearance for Lacrosse.  Field Hockey was represented, as was women's soccer.  Alas, I can't tell you much about what they shared as I took the opportunity to stroll over to the side and strike up a conversation with Katie George, Katie Keller, Maggie Ruckenbrod, and Emily Juhl.

I was looking for an opportunity to get a picture with three members of my UofL All-Sport All-Rod team, with Maggie Ruckenbrod, Emily Juhl, and Kevin Ware all being in attendance, but alas, the opportunity never presented itself.

Some tidbits from the conversation:
  • Kevin Ware and Emily Juhl have talked about the experience of having titanium rods in their leg, and Emily was able to reassure Kevin that she was able to jump and move on it with no real ill effects.
  • 3 of the 5 incoming volleyball players are on campus at this point.  Javoni Faucette started classes in January. Sydney Cooper arrived on campus this week, along with the surprise transfer arrival of Randi Ewing, a six foot middle hitter/blocker from Fordham.  The other two freshmen, Brook Betts, and Maya McClendon are still playing club ball and will arrive on campus in July.
Ewing is a fairly common name, so I will go ahead point out that Randi is indeed the daughter of NBA and Olympic basketball star Patrick Ewing.

All in all, a very pleasant evening on the river, the weather was perfect, the conversation fun, and it seems as if everyone had a great time.

Tennis to Compete in 2014 ITA National Indoor Championships

The International Tennis Association has announced that UofL's women's tennis team has been invited to compete in the 2014 National Indoor Championships.  UofL will open play against one of the elite tennis teams in the University of Florida.  After that will be matches again either Missouri or Harvard.  The first two rounds of matches will be January 25th and 26th in Gainesville, FL.  The winner of that bracket advances on to the Sweet 16 at the Championship event in Charlottesville, VA.

There are no automatic qualifications for this tournament, so this is a chance to play against the top 64 teams in the country.

Quite an honor for the UofL Women's Tennis team.

Basketball recruits arrive on campus

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

(Our Jenny O'Bryan fills us in on one of the women's basketball recruits that is on the UofL campus preparing for her freshman season under Jeff Walz. Paulie also reports on CARDINAL CARAVAN. Woo! Hoo!)

It’s June!  Summer is upon us, all Louisville athletic teams are in the offseason, summer classes in the ‘Ville are just starting up.

While high school seniors across the country have very recently, or not yet, turned the tassel on their caps, there is little time for reminiscing.  Elite athletes across the country have packed their bags and started the next chapter of their lives.  College campuses are receiving their athletes and such is the case for Louisville Women’s Basketball incoming class.

I will spend the next few weeks highlighting the careers of this incoming class,   Emmonnie Henderson, Janelle Cannon and Starr Breedlove.  I’ll start this week with the top recruit in the class, Henderson.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

We have been talking about Henderson here at Cardinal Couple for well over the last year.  We followed her last bit of recruiting as her choices were whittled down to Louisville, Purdue and Tennessee.

Henderson is a 6-2 forward from Edwardsville, Illinois.  She is well known here as a dual sport athlete competing also in discus and shot put.   Her intention to participate in both sports in college is well known.

Henderson was ranked as high as 21st in the nation in her class and has to be among the strongest.  She has been described by recruiting analysts as “strong as an ox” and a force in and around the paint.

Henderson is a versatile player who can play inside and out with range beyond the arc.   She defends and can move up and down the court quite nicely for a big.

In all that I have read about Henderson I am most impressed with the praise her coaches have piled upon her.  She is a leader on and off the court and field, and is a strong believer in the team concept.  She appears to be unselfish and is always working for the betterment of her team.

Henderson was recently awarded Overall Female Athlete of the Year in Illinois. (Read all about it here:   http://www.stltoday.com/sports/high-school/overall-female-athlete-of-the-year-emmonnie-henderson-edwardsville/article_5f014628-1011-5b31-accd-c76ce9d8eb5d.html
Her coach’s praise regarding her work ethic, goal setting and never being satisfied attitude will be well received on the Louisville campus.

I look for a big impact from Henderson.  I understand adjusting to the college game in the post is one of the hardest transitions for players out of high school.    I expect she has the mental toughness and work ethic to do just fine joining this National Runner up team.
Welcome to the ‘Ville, Emmonnie!  We look forward to seeing you on the court and to watching your growth as a player and a Cardinal these next few years.

-Jenny O'Bryan

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

It was an excellent afternoon down on the Ohio River at Captain's Quarters for the 2013 CARDINAL CARAVAN.  Cardinal Couple was well represented with both Paulie and Jeff McAdams in attendance and we have some great interviews for the Saturday radio show from several fans in attendance and also Coach Kellie Young (Lacrosse), Maggie Ruckenbrod (softball) and Howie Lindsey ( Louisville Sports Report).

A capacity crowd heard from Rick Pitino, Tom Jurich, Jeff Walz, Sandy Pearsall, Kellie Young, Karen Ferguson Dayes and other Cardinal coaches and players during the 90 minute cavalcade of the best and brightest of Louisville Athletics.

Tuesday Cardinal Couple -- It's Caravan Time

TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Caravan rolls starting today

Irv, Peggy, Tia and Sonja from last year's Caravan
It's time for the annual Cardinal Caravan to kick into gear. This event hits five cities this year in three days and offers Cardinal fans a great opportunity to see UofL coaches, players, cheerleaders, LadyBirds, Louie and get UofL gear and season ticket information.

The Louisville stop, which will be held at Captain's Quarters off River Rd. tonight, is the largest of the five stops. UofL requested that you make reservations for these stops because of capacity planning. I doubt they'll show you the door, however, if you show up unannounced and un-reserved.

We hope Anne Kordes is there this year...
The Cardinal Caravan crew kicks it off in Bardstown, KY. today at Kreso's Restaurant (218 N. 3rd St) at 11:45 a.m.

Never been there, but they tell me it's nice. Things get underway at Captain's Quarters at 6:30 p.m. You might want to arrive early to get a seat on the lawn and eat a little something.

Here's the other stops:

Wednesday, June 5th

12:45 p.m.   Bowling Green   SKyPAC  601 College St.
5:30 p.m.   Lexington  Grand Reserve  901 Manchester

Thursday, June 6th

6 p.m.   Shelbyville  Fairgrounds Pavillion  1513 Midland Trail

No southern Indiana stop this year...which is a bit surprising. We know of a lot of UofL fans across the bridges.

Last year's event was a great time and long lines formed to get autographs from Gorgui Dieng and Peyton Siva. We got to talk to Louisville WBB star Tia Gibbs for awhile and she posed for a picture with Sonja. We also got to talk to several coaches, including baseball's Dan McDonnell, who introduced us to five freshman. Baseball doing pretty well this year, headed to Nashville for the Super Regionals.

Poobah Al Parrish will be there. MArky MArk doubtful.
About the only bad thing that happened last year was the incredible thunderstorm that rolled up the Ohio River as the event was ending. We waited it out under the tents they set up on the lawn. They do have beverages and food for purchase...so it isn't a spartan-type affair.

Tom Jurich and Rick Pitino are scheduled to appear. We suspect there will be many more UofL coaches than that in attendance. Last year, Sandy Pearsall was there also. Our guess is Jeff Walz will be present, too...if he's not out recruiting. Julie Hermann? Probably not...

I suppose my favorite Cardinal Caravan was back in 2008. I wandered upon a group of Cardinal WBB players watching the proceedings. They were personable, posed for photos and I remember this senior by the name of McCoughtry telling me...point blank...that the team was headed to St. Louis to play in the Final Four. She was intense about it. I believed her. She, of course, was right.

Good times. See you there!

AMERICAN or BIG EAST? How about both...

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-AMERICAN Athletic Conference or BIG EAST? UofL women's sports teams will participate in both next year

-Cardinal Caravan kicks off tomorrow

We now know a bit more (not a lot, mind you) about the AMERICAN conference that Louisville will participate in for a year before going to the ACC. And, it does (if a conference can actually have a persona or identity) want to be called "The American"...not the AAC.

They've even come up with a logo. It's functional, we suppose and gets the basic idea across. They have a web site, too.

http://www.theamerican.org

Not a whole not over at the site yet, but they do have the logos of 12 teams that will take part in AMERICAN sports. (Sorry, but every time I type AMERICAN in bold letters like we do with the BIG EAST or ACC...I want to salute the flag or hum the National Anthem).

Louisville's logo isn't one of the 12 school logos that grace the member page. It's probably just as well, since it's a one-year membership for Cardinal sports. I describe it as a stop at the three-star hotel for a night before arriving at the luxury resort.

So, who are these AMERICAN members and how often will we interact with them?

CONNECTICUT - We're familiar with the Huskies. Home of Geno and fake fair catches in football games. They usually beat us in field hockey and lacrosse, too.
SMU - That stands for Southern Methodist University. I don't know if there is a northern, eastern or western Methodist university. I won't spend any time researching it, either.
UCF - University of Central Florida, to you...sir. We just got two women's golf coaches from them. In Orlando. So is Disney World. Their mascot is not "the Mouse".
TEMPLE - A Philadelphia university, Bill Cosby went there. Louisville knows Philly, because of Villanova. They'll need to reprogram the GPS, though. Owls vs. Cards. I like it.
MEMPHIS - They left C-USA for this? I guess the lure of playing Cincinnati again was just too strong. Louisville WBB beat Memphis so badly the last time out, Sonja got in...
CINCINNATI - They're probably bitter they aren't joining us in the ACC. We'll miss Mick Cronin, Jamelle Elliott and Nippert Stadium. OK, not all that much. Bear it, Bearcats.
USF - a.k.a. South Florida. I think the happiest I've ever seen a coach is when Jose Fernandez saw his WBB hoops team beat Louisville in the YUM! last year. I'll miss Tampa.
EAST CAROLINA - Another C-USA departure. I do know there is a north, south and western Carolina. Whether they are Methodist or not, I'm not so sure. Gordon Gee might...
TULANE - It holds a special memory for me because it was Howard Schnellenberger's first really big win at UofL. They don't play field hockey or lacrosse in Nawlins but do play Sand Volleyball!
HOUSTON - The Cougars did go 40-19 in softball & normally field good hoops teams, too. Another departed from C-USA. They also made the NCAA Softball Regionals. 1-2 like us.
TULSA - The Hurricanes hosted the C-USA Softball regionals. Another one of those schools that won't pose a threat in lacrosse or field hockey because they don't play.
NAVY - I actually had a reader e-mail me asking if Navy had any women's sports programs. Why, yes...they do. They join in 2015 after Louisville goes to the ACC.

A waiting list for the AMERICAN? Really?

So, we know Louisville will play soccer in the AMERICAN, but field hockey in the BIG EAST. Lacrosse in the BIG EAST but basketball in the AMERICAN. Softball in the AMERICAN
and Volleyball I have no idea because they haven't released a schedule yet.

Dizzy yet? I thought so...

If I were the University of Louisville athletic purchasing department director, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on AMERICAN stationary or logo patches for uniforms.

So, we will be AMERICANS for a year. Then, maybe to the south of France or Bora-Bora. How about the brilliance of Sean Moth who queried..." If a Louisville player gets 'all-conference' recognition next season, does it mean they are 'all-American' ?" Or All-AMERICAN. Jeez....

"Ask not what your conference can do for you. Ask what conference records you can set in one season."

I'm pretty sure John F. Kennedy didn't say that...but Caitlin Welch, Shoni Schimmel and Caralisa Connell may find out...

Will freshman signees with one of the 12 schools be known as "Young AMERICANS"? and will David Bowie be okay with that terminology?

DAVID BOWIE'S YOUNG AMERICANS

And, at long last...Al Greener can point proudly to his "pep" trombonists and drummers and say (for at least one year):

"We're an American band!"

(apologies to Grand Funk Railroad...)

GRAND FUNK'S WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

CARDINAL CARAVAN rolls into Bardstown and Louisville tomorrow. The whole schedule is at www.gocards.com

If you're headed to the Louisville one, it officially starts at 6:30 p.m. You'll probably want to get there earlier than that, though...it gets mucho crowded. Jurich, Pitino, and a plethora of other coaches and players.

It's fun and the view of the Ohio River from Captain's Quarters is pretty sweet. Unless you're seeing a doozy of a thunderstorm rolling in, like we did at the end of the festivities last year. See you out there!

Thursday Cardinal Couple

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( JEFF MCADAMS is on the ball with Thursday's CARDINAL COUPLE...bringing us soccer and basketball reports.  Cardinal Caravan is also rolling around again and Emmonnie Henderson receives a St. Louis honor.)

Soccer is on the ball

We have the first set schedule for women's fall sports, and soccer is the first across the finish line...or perhaps the first to the goal is the better metaphor.

They start out on the road with a couple of exhibition games at Vanderbilt and Purdue on August 11th and 17th.  The real season starts at home on the 23rd and 25th with games against Butler and Illinois.

Back out on the road to play a couple of games against future conference-mates Virginia Tech and Wake Forest at the Wake Forest Invitation on August 30th and September 1st.  The road trip continues with the obligatory in-state rivalry matchup with Kentucky on the 6th, then a quick trip up to Miami (Ohio) on the 8th.

Back to Cardinal Park for another in-state with Morehead on the 13th.  Texas-San Antonio comes into town that weekend as well on the 15th.

Another conference switch-up on the 21st with the trip to the now non-conference-foes Marquette.

The conference slate starts on the 27th with Memphis coming to Louisville...now there's a blast from the past.  Then I suspect we'll get a visit from Julie Hermann on the 29th with Rutgers, which is joining the Big 10 in 2014...except for football which is apparently playing in the Big 10 this fall...I'm already confused.

A road trip to the new Texas wing of the conference with visits to SMU and Houston on October 3rd and 6th.  Followed by the Florida wing of the conference, in the form of USF and UCF, coming to visit Louisville on the 11th and 13th.

Next is a trip to Philadelphia, but in the brave new conference world, it's to play Temple instead of Villanova.  That game will happen on the 17th.

The end-of-the-season road trip wraps up with thankfully familiar foes with games at UConn and Cincinnati on October 20th and 25th.

The American Athletic Conference, or AAC, or "The American"...take your pick...takes place Halloween and November 3rd at campus sites, then concludes somewhere undecided at this point on the 8th and 10th.

Boy, this conference realignment stuff is really gonna keep us on our toes!

Speaking of Scheduling

The Cardinal Caravan has announced its 5 stops this summer over 3 days.  June 4th stops include an
11:45 start time at Kreso's Restaurant in Bardstown, KY, followed by the always mobbed visit to Captain's Quarters here in Louisville at 6:30.

Stops the next day include a visit to the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center in Bowling Green at 12:45...presumably central time since its in Bowling Green.  The evening stop is at 5:30 at Grand Reserve in Lexington.  Stay safe, people!

The final visit is at the Shelbyville Fairgrounds at 6pm on the 6th.

All of the events are free, but an RSVP is required, and can be submitted online at http://www.uoflalumni.org/caravan2013 so the folks planning the events can make sure that appropriate accommodations are available for the crowds.

We just can't stay away from Basketball

Because we just can't seem to go without talking about women's basketball, it appears that UofL will be participating in the Women's Preseason WNIT tournament.

The 16 team tournament, which will be played at participating school locations, includes Georgia State, Gonzaga, Idaho, IPFW...yay, more Mastadons...Loyola University Chicago, LSU, Mount St. Mary's University, North Carolina A&T...hope they bring their band...Oklahoma, Quinnipiac, St. Joseph's, Stephen F. Austin, Stetson, Tennessee-Martin, and Wichita State.

The tournament guarantees three games for participating teams win or lose.  The first round will be November 8th, second round games on the 10th and 11th, semifinals on the 14th, and the championship game on the 17th.  The two teams that play in the championship game will get to play 4 games, so there's plenty of motivation to play well to get that extra preseason tune-up game.

We'll claim this one is track and field

Finally, Paulie forwarded me a link to this article about incoming freshman Emmonnie Henderson's
senior year at Edwardsville, Illinois.  Henderson will, of course, play for Jeff Walz on the basketball team, but will be dual-sport, participating in track and field throwing events.

Henderson was named Female Athlete of the Year by STLhighschoolsports.com for her successes in basketball and track and field.

She'll participate in both at Louisville...her Edwardsville hoops squad went 30-1 in Illinois Class 4A basketball. In track and field, Henderson has been equally dominant as a four-time champion in the shot put and three-time champion in the discus.

In the 2013 Illinois State Championships, she set another record in the shot..while winning both events.

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Captain's Quarters Cardinal Caravan conquers storms, captivates capacity crowd.

Athletic Director Tom Jurich and S.I.D. Kenny Klien
were all smiles after seeing the huge crowd for Louisville's
Cardinal Caravan.
Never underestimate the power of the Cardinal Spirit. Thursday's final Cardinal Caravan stop landed at Captain's Quarters off River Road in Louisville and provided a capacity crowd of over 1600 an hour long show which included UofL coaches, players, LadyBirds and a great venue for catching up on Cardinal Sports.

UofL womens basketball star Tia Gibbs poses with
Sonja and WBB fans Irv and Peggy Schmidt...
They also beat the weather, which started out hot and humid and turned into strong storms minutes after the  gala affair ended.

Emcees Drew Deener and Howie Lindsey kept the show moving with the skill of seasoned, professional event organizers as Sandy Pearsall, Ken Lolla, Dan McDonnell, Karen Ferguson-Dayes, Kenny Carter, Anne Kordes and other Cardinal coaches and players spoke to the appreciative crowd.

From what we heard, this could be an incredible season for Cardinal Sports this fall, winter and spring.

Donna Floyd (center) and other eager Cardinal fans
wait to talk to, get pictures with and autographs from
Cardinal athletes.
Tom Jurich began the festivities with glowing reports on the success and popularity of Cardinal Athletics and told us of his hopes to surpass the record-setting performances of last year's UofL squads in the upcoming season.

Football, both basketball squads, baseball, softball, both soccer teams...the list seems non-stop for Cardinal teams poised to contend for conference titles, national championship runs. The enthusiastic fans in attendance roared their approval as Tom and the entourage educated the crowd.

Cardinal Couple's Sandy Walker (left) and Sonja enjoyed the
afternoon activities and interaction with tons of UofL fans
Tom, you've engineered the perfect example of what excellence in college athletics can be and cultivated a fan base that loves and appreciates it.

If you think Tom is fired up about UofL sports, you should hear his head coaches discuss the subject. It's not hard to see why Cardinal athletes strive to be the best they can be when you hear their coaches and leaders express their passion about their teams, players and philosophies.

The lovely, talented and witty Tia Gibbs
The coaches were a big hit. The players in attendance also drew huge throngs of crowds seeking autographs, pictures and handshakes. Chane Behanan, Gorgui Dieng, Russ Smith, Mike Marra from Rick Pitino's men's basketball team were swamped and surrounded by adoring fans. Tia Gibbs was sporting an ear-to-ear grin as she greeted womens' basketball fans eager to discuss the season, her rehab from surgery ( she's healed and ready to go...look out BIG EAST) and the team.

Sara, Linda and Chris Stewart had a rail-bird view of
Cardinal Caravan
When Tia informed us her mother reads Cardinal Couple each and every morning, we promised to provide nothing but sparkling and positive coverage of "Butler Bear's"  performances this year.

We understand perfectly. If mama isn't happy, no one's happy. We look forward to writing many rave reviews of #25's domination this season as a part of Jeff Walz's top ten Lady Cards ballers. As Asia and Shoni would say:

"We are the...CARDINALS!"

From the beginning of the festivities at 5:30 to the prize drawings one hour later, the event was non-stop, wall-to-wall Cardinal conversation, coverage and   camaraderie.

"Coach P." Softball coach Sandy Pearsall gives us a smile
as she prepares to address the enthusiastic crowd.
The skies were threatening, though...and the cold front had dropped the temperature at least 20 degrees by the riverfront stage by 6:15. And, the rains came about 30 minutes later...as autograph signing and other post-Caravan activities were moved indoors.

The crowd got what they came for, though...and the celebration was the first of many that Cardinal fans will no doubt have in the upcoming months.

UofL head baseball coach Dan McDonnell has Omaha
on his mind...with his team hopefully getting to the
College World Series.
"When you look at the quality coaches and hear them and Jurich talk about their pride and involvement in Cardinal Sports...how can you not be pumped and fired up about Cardinal Nation?" a smiling Caravan attendee told me, displaying his basketball team picture that Chane Behanan and several other players had autographed.

Our sentiments exactly!

Go, Cards, go!
It's coming, folks. The full-out, intense team practices in August. The opening games for football, volleyball, field hockey and other Cardinal teams. The roar of the red-clad crowd, the fist-pumping, hive-fiving excitement of Louisville's finest participating and winning on fields and courts.

L1C4.

'The other' Tom and Tilly the Tour Guide double team Sonja
It's an attitude. It's a philosophy. It's big, it's here and now and it's going to be a lot of fun to attend, to cover and be a part of. A great kickoff to the excitement ahead took place Thursday at the Cardinal Caravan at Captain's Quarters and we can't wait for this "Card Party" to get rollin' down the tracks!

Thursday Cardinal Couple -- Common Myths About Bull Riding

.
THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-No bull about bullriding here...

-Cardinal Caravan in Louisville today!

-A busy fifteen minutes

(CARDINAL COUPLE writer Mark "The Commish" Schneider continues his look at the PBR today. We feature an article that dispels several myths about Bull riding and the participants. We've got him scheduled next to investigate Area 54, Elvis's death and why the Cubs are the worst team in baseball. The "Commish" is on top of it!)

Most people love animals.  Dogs, Cats, Horses, and even BULLS.  However, sometimes animal rights groups seem to go too far.  Nothing wrong with wanting to protect animals from cruelty.  I'm all for that.  But to distribute false information without getting all the facts in order to advance their cause is another story.  At first glance when watching a Bull Riding event some may think, "How cruel" or  "The animals are being hurt."  (Watch more closely and more often than not the riders are the ones getting hurt).  Maybe there should be an organization called AETH. ("Animals for the Ethical Treatment of Humans").  All kidding aside:

PETA has been touting two myths about Bull Riding/Rodeos in general.

Myth #1

"Electric prods, spurs, and bucking straps are used to irritate and enrage animals used in rodeos. Before entering the ring, cows and horses are often prodded with an electrical "hotshot" so that the pain will rile them."

This is simply not true.  Especially in the PBR. That is not to say it has never happened in a small town rodeo, but as far as the PBR?  I do not think so.

During countless events broadcasted on TV the cameras are directly in the chutes.  Every move anyone makes is shown up close.  The bulls are not coerced into bucking.  It is simply what they like to do.  A bull bucks because it is in their blood. Just as race horses are "born to run", bucking bulls are "born to buck".

As far as the spurs hurting the animal, the fact is the spurs are "dulled" and are not sharp.  Also, a bulls skin is 7 times thicker than a humans and when a bull is "spurred",  it does not harm the animal.  No marks are left and no blood is drawn. Does one think the owner of a bull worth $35,000 or more (A bull named Little Yellow Jacket was worth $150,000) would allow a cowboy to "spur" it if he thought for one moment it would harm it? Owning and raising bucking bulls is an expensive proposition. Just like our pets, a stock contractor treats every bull like one of his family.  For example, when World Champion bull MOSSYOAK MUDSLINGER recently died, his owner H.D.Page had this to say: "He's irreplaceable, there's no doubt about it.  I missed him a bunch when I had to retire him from the arena, and now I'm going to miss him even more as a sire. He was part of our family. He's done more for our family than any person."

Myth #2

"The flank (or "bucking") strap is tightly cinched around the animals' abdomens, causing them to buck vigorously in an attempt to escape the pain. The flank strap can cause open wounds and burns when the hair is rubbed off and the skin is chafed raw. Former animal control officers have found burrs and other irritants placed under the flank strap."

Again--not in the PBR. The flank strap is tied loosely around the flank, usually by the stock contractor/owner. Again, if this hurt the bull, would he be doing this? As a matter of fact there are times it will fall off during the ride.  The flank strap is a rope made out of cotton which is tied around the bull's flank. Contrary to popular belief, the flank strap is not tied around the bull's testicles. Without being too graphic--this is a family friendly website--this point must be made:  If a rope is tied around the bulls testicles, I do not think it would encourage him to buck. As one stock contractor said," What would a human do if it was tied around theirs?"  I don't think it would encourage "bucking".  I believe one would see a human lying on the ground crying in a fetal position.  And when a bull is bucking, one can actually see that the strap is nowhere near or tied around it's "privates".  This rope is to encourage the bull to use its hind legs more in a bucking motion.  If tied too tight, the bull would not buck very well.  It has to be loose to cause the bull to want to buck it off.  Sometimes the strap falls off during a ride. When that happens, the bull will usually quit bucking.

Former CEO of the PBR Randy Benard (now CEO of The INDY Racing League) had this to say about Animal Welfare and the PBR:

"In the 1970s and '80s, PETA did a pretty good job of informing people that bull riding hurt bulls in all kinds of different ways. All those are completely false. We encourage and welcome any animal rights groups to come in and look at how we treat our animals. It's very important to the sport and to the industry that our animals are taken good care of. The other thing is, people are so surprised when they come to an event and see the type of fan base that's there. It's so much more than a western sport."

Here are the PBR's Animal Welfare Facts:

Bulls receive 25-30 lbs of a special blend of mixed grain per day. Blend varies depending on the bull’s needs and the stock contractor.

Bulls receive 20 lbs of Alfalfa or Alfalfa-grass blend per day.

Bulls receive a B-12 complex vitamin shot every two weeks.

Bulls receive a health inspection any time they have to cross state lines.

Bulls are only allowed to travel a maximum of 8 hours per day. After 10 hours, the bulls are rested for 12-14 hours.

Bulls are standing in 6-10 inches of sawdust shavings during transport.

Each stock contractor has a local veterinarian on call for their bulls.

To be fair, as with any sport there are injuries.  This includes the bulls.

According to the PBR these are the facts about bull injuries:

There are approximately 60 bulls at a one-day event, 90 bulls at a two-day event and 110 bulls at a three-day event. A bull bucks only one time per day and no more than two times at a typical event. Approximately 30-40 of the bulls at a typical two-day event will buck only once at that event.

One bull will suffer a minor injury (muscle pull, scratch) every 8 events or 786 outs.

Bulls that are determined to have an injury are not allowed to compete again until fully recovered, which is generally one to four weeks.

One bull will suffer a career-ending injury every 100 events or 9,833 outs.

Bulls that suffer a career-ending injury are retired to stud and live the balance of their lives as healthy, fully capable breeding bulls. Their injuries do not impede the quality of life or ability to function, but do prevent them from competing at the PBR level as a bucking athlete.

Four bulls have been euthanized as a result of injuries sustained over the 960 PBR events held since 1992, which translates to 1 out of every 23,735 outs.

The bulls that have sustained life-threatening injuries at PBR events have been taken to large animal hospitals for treatment and care. Three of the animal athletes that have sustained life- threatening injuries received hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical treatment and lived for extended periods of time (up to two years) before the injuries required euthanization.

A bucking bull has a .004% chance of sustaining a life-threatening injury at a PBR event.

Raising and owning bucking bulls is a full time job.  It is very expensive and time consuming.  Because of this, I seriously doubt a stock contractor would want any harm to come to his bulls.   The following video Breeding and raising bulls for the PBR will drive these points home. Watch as PBR stock contractor, Greg Simano, explains the various aspects of being a stock contractor:

Commish Mark

( From the look of things, these bulls are leading a better life than the CARDINAL COUPLE Co-Owners. Good job, today!)

Thursday brings the CARDINAL CARAVAN to Louisville with an appearance at Captain's Quarters on River Road. Meet the owners and writers of CARDINAL COUPLE at the event...which begins at 5:30.

You'll get a chance to meet with coaches, players and Cardinal Fans at the annual event...the final stop of a three-day whirlwind tour that takes the participants to Owensboro, Bowling Green and other stops in the state.

I know, it's supposed to be another scorcher outside on Thursday, but the event is a great chance to hear about the upcoming teams and events for UofL sports and have a little fun in the process.

Softball coach Sandy Pearsall, women's basketball coach Jeff Walz, the LadyBirds, UofL Cheerleaders, Louie the Cardinal Bird and the pep band under the direction of "Iowa" Al Greener will also be in attendance. We're trying to arrange a three-point contest between our staff chimp Co-Co and Shoni, but UofL isn't responding favorably to the premise...so far.

Fish, cold beverages and Cardinal Nation! Sounds like a pretty good Thursday! See you there.  No rain, no rain, no rain, no rain...(we hope).
