Basketball Defeats Marist

The first half looked like more of the same for the Women's Basketball squad against Marist. Competitive play overall, and close scores, but slowly slipping behind the opponent, punctuated by moments of, "What were you thinking?" Ultimately, though, the Cards would get it done by a score of 65-53.

26% shooting in the first half is not going to win any awards, but some consolation was to be found in 40% shooting from beyond the arc, and very good free throw shooting at 90%, 9 out of 10. Continuing another theme from earlier games, Marist had 10 turnovers, but UofL only scored 4 points off of those turnovers in the first half.

In the second half, things started to gel a little bit. Field Goal shooting was improved each quarter; 25%, 30%, 45%, and 65% in the 4th quarter. Point off of turnovers increased each quarter as well; 2, 2, 6, and 12 in the 4th quarter while the number of turnovers on Marist stayed roughly the same, 6, 4, 7, and 7.

Points leaders in the game for the Cards were Myisha Hines-Allen with 18, Briahanna Jackson with 14, and Mariya Moore with 11. Jackson and Moore both dished up some good assist numbers with 6 and 4 respectively. Also, proving once again that height isn't the only criteria for a basketball player, the rebound leader for the team was Briahanna Jackson, pulling down 8. On a side note, Cardinal Couple favorite Sydney Brackemyre got her first points as a Cardinal by sinking both of her free throws. We also saw Dakota Weatherford get her first minutes as a Cardinal, pulling down a rebound and yoinking a pair of steals off of Marist.

The victory over Marist and Purdue's victory over LSU means we get to pull out that classis UofL cheer tonight. Go! Cards! Beat! Purdue! The game will be at 7:30 and will also be streamed on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at7z22647qQ.

Volleyball Drops the Season Finale

Volleyball closed out the regular season at Syracuse, and the Orange were flying high, quite literally. The 'Cuse beat the Cards 25-23, 25-22, 25-15 in a match that features some of the worst play by the Cards since they played Kentucky.

The story of the game can be summed up in just a few stats. The Cards committed 9 service errors, and Syracuse outblocked the Cards 12-6.

Against such impressive blocking (an attribute to be expected from any Leonid Yelin coached team), the Cards only hit .145 for the match, although Syracuse didn't set any record for great hitting either at only .229.

Defensively, the Cards did reasonably well, with Molly Sauer showing why she was Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the ACC by digging up 22 shots. Janelle Jenkins dug a respectable 13, and Aniah Philo continues to be strong on defense with 9 digs.

Offensively, there's not much joy and excitement here. Erin Fairs and Aniah Philo both had 10 kills, but Erin did so quite inefficiently with only a .050 hitting percentage, while Aniah tallied a respectable, if not spectacular .227. Janelle Jenkins did contribute offensively as well, with 8 kills for .219 hitting. The middle was fairly quiet with 5 kills for Tess Clark for .250, and 6 for Maggie DeJong for .200.

The Cards now wait to see where they get placed in the NCAA tournament. The goal for the season had been to host first and second rounds matches at the KFC Yum! Center, and that goal is not likely to come to pass at this point with the loss to Syracuse. The Cards were already expecting to be on the bubble for hosting even if they won out the season. A bid to the tournament is almost assured. There's even still a chance of getting the ACC's automatic qualifier bid. The way this works out is that we are now tied in the ACC standings with UNC at 2 losses. If I understand the tie-breaker rules in the ACC correctly, UNC would get the AQ because they have the victory over us. However, UNC still has a match to play, this afternoon, against a middle-of-the-ACC-pack Duke team. This match is at Duke, so this is a very dangerous match for UNC. The match is on ESPN3 at 1pm.

Volleyball, Basketball play today...Volleyball sweeps awards...-- Friday Cardinal Couple

NO BLACK FRIDAY FOR UofL SPORTS TODAY

While some of you are busily scooping up Black Friday deals at retail outlets today, the Louisville WBB and Volleyball programs are hoping to scoop up wins on this day after Thanksgiving. 

Both Louisville women's basketball and volleyball are on the road today for games. The Wide Net Cards are at Syracuse, Walz's charges are in Estero, FL. getting ready for the Gulf Coast Showcase 

SYRACUSE NO PUSHOVER FOR KORDES KREW

In their final game of the regular season, the Louisville Volleyball team faces Syracuse with huge implications on the line.

A win gives Louisville outright possession of the ACC Championship. Beating the 'Cuse would keep the Cards alive in the RPI for a possible 1st and 2nd round hosting for the NCAA Tournament.

The Cards nearly blew both opportunities Wednesday when they ran into a fired-up, nothing-to-lose Boston College team that took them to four sets 27-29, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24
in Chestnut Hill.

Against the Orangewomen, Louisville will face a 22-8, 13-6 squad that will be celebrating Senior Day and also trying to stay alive for NCAA Tournament considerations. The two schools met earlier in the ACC schedule at the KFC YUM! Center...the Cards taking a four set win. Erin Fairs had 16 kills in the win.

Game time is 1 p.m. No TV planned as far as I can tell.

BASKETBALL FACING MARIST

Louisville women's basketball looks for their first win of the season against (0-4) Marist later today in the first round of the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Cards may present viewers a shuffled lineup...due to defensive concerns by Jeff Walz. 

The teams (all eight of them) engaged in a Thanksgiving Banquet last night that Cardinal Couple correspondent Sandy Walker attended. We'll sample some of the audio she captured from it on our Saturday radio show THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR.

If the Cards somehow manage to lose this one today, it wouldn't be a first. Marist defeated them back in 2010 in Las Vegas 74-68. It would, however, be a surprise...

This one is supposed to be live on You Tube at 5 p.m. today. Matt Andrews and Adrienne Johnson will have the radio call on WKRD 790.

VOLLEY CARDS RAKE IN THE HONORS!

Congratulations to Molly Sauer, Katie George and Anne Kordes for capturing all the ACC Volleyball Awards.

Sauer was selected Freshman of the Year and Defensive player of the Year. George received Player of the Year and Setter of the Year honors. Kordes Coach of the Year. 

Along with Sauer, Aniah Philo was named to the Freshman First Team. Erin Fairs joined George on the All ACC First team.

Call her Aniah "Tri-lo" ? -- Tuesday CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS OUTSIDE-HITTER SELECTED ACC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK FOR THIRD TIME

For the third consecutive week, the VolleyCards freshman outside hitter Aniah Philo has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week after her performances against Notre Dame and Virginia.

Just call her Aniah Trilo. 

Philo got her fourth double-double of the season against the Irish when she produced 13 kills and 12 digs. Several days later, "Tri-lo" contributed eight kills, nine digs and six blocks against the Cavaliers. Her hitting average was .319 for the week in Louisville's straight-set thumping of the opposition.

She also put a big smile on the face of Louisville Volleyball head coach Anne Kordes with the stats. Kordes talks about her consistency and resiliency:

...For instance, if she gets blocked or, you know, she gets aced, I’m not worried about the very next ball either getting set to her or the next serve coming at her, She doesn’t have a funk. I actually don’t know if she remembers that it happened, so that’s kind of the fun part, you know, she just plays...



Previous to Philo's streak, Anna Walsh...a Virginia middle-hitter had taken Freshman of the Week honors for three consecutive weeks. Walsh and Philo played club ball on the same team in Texas and catching Walsh was one of Philo's driving points.

Philo is also mindful that the continued success requires continued hard work. 

...You have to work hard for it. Someone can come in and take your position at any time...

Just as Philo replaced previous starter Maya McClendon...who led the team in kills last season. 

The question is...if Aniah wins the award for a fourth time this season....do we call her Aniah Quad-lo?

Thursday Cardinal Couple - It's a Win

Volleyball Sweeps Another

In an uncommon Wednesday evening matchup, the Volleyball team...well, they got the victory. Notre Dame came to town to try to avenge the match earlier in the season in South Bend, but went back with just about the same result. The Cards swept the Irish in three sets (25-21, 25-19, 26-24), but it wasn't without some drama. (As if there hasn't been enough drama on campus these days...) 

The third set had the most drama with the Cards down 11-17, and later in the set 16-22 before storming back to with the set and match. Cap this one off with a great finish by ACC freshman of the week for the second week in a row, Aniah Philo who scored the last 3 points of the match to seal the win for UofL. A big swing on the left side, then a service ace, and finishing it off with a monster back row attack.

The first set was highlighted by lots of back and forth play, with 17 ties and eight lead changes. The Cards hit a solid .333 to get the job done, but the play felt sloppy, and maybe a bit lethargic. They were able to pull out to a slight separation at the end to claim the set 25-21.

The second set was an improvement over the first, but still some back and forth play with six ties and two lead changes. UofL still looked like they were sleepwalking a bit through this one, but were still able to build a little bit of separation for the 25-19 win.

The third set was where the drama showed up. After ties at 2-2 and 3-3, the Irish climbed out to a substantial lead and really looked like they were going to claim a solid 3rd set win. The Cards showed a bit of life at 11-17 and were able to close down some of the lead. The momentum shift brought a Notre Dame timeout at 13-17. Coach Anne Kordes clearly didn't like what see saw on the next play because she decided she needed to have another chat with the team at 13-18. The play improved a bit, and see-sawed up to 16-22...and then the UofL team we know and love finally arrived and decided they wanted to play the way they know they can. The Cards stormed back to tie the set up at 23-23. A Janelle Jenkins service error, and Philo decided enough was enough and scored three quick points to take the set and match.

In post-match comments, Philo said that Freshman of the Week honors was a goal from day one. She called out her club ball teammate and freshman middle hitter at UVA, Anna Walsh, as having set the mark that Philo is shooting for. Walsh has picked up the freshman of the week honor from the ACC three times so far. I certainly will be keeping a closer eye on the weekly honors for the rest of the season.

Other stats of note include a match leading 16 kills for Erin Fairs, a very efficient and sneaky .444 with 10 kills from Maggie DeJong, Philo's 13 for an impressive .345 along with 12 digs for a double-double, and another double-double for Janelle Jenkins with 10 kills and 15 digs. Also on the defensive side of the stats, quietly dependable Molly Sauer dug a match high 20 shots.

The Cards now head out on the road for three. The first will be Saturday where Philo will meet up with her rival Walsh at Virginia in Charlottesville. The next weekend will see them in Chapel Hill and Raleigh to take on the blocking powerhouse of the ACC at UNC, and a Sunday battle with a 12-8, 1-7 NC State squad.

Women's Golf leads CARDINAL CUP by a stroke going into final day -- Tuesday Cardinal Couple

CARDS Black Team up on FSU in CARDINAL CUP

Led by Laura Restrepo and Olivia Cason, the Black squad for UofL women's golf has a one stroke lead over FSU as they go into the final round this morning at the UofL Golf Club. 

Restrepo fired a two-under par 70 to pull her into a tie for third place...just two strokes back of tournament leader Brooke Ferrell (Wisconsin). Cason looms at eight place, just two strokes behind Restrepo and fired a 71 in the first 18 holes yesterday.

CARDINAL COUPLE offered to provide whispered, monotone golf commentary on the 18th hole via Periscope but our request was never replied to when we outlined our plans to have chimps do the on-green interviews and provide wedgies while Worldwide and I sat in the tower and provided garbled non-sequitors about putting, driving, club selection, changing fall colors and what the girls were wearing....while keeping a watchful eye out for Kracken, gophers and zombies.  

Notre Dame is six strokes back of the leaders, Illinois a stroke behind them and the Louisville Red team and Wisconsin 13 strokes off the lead.

For the second week in a row, Aniah Philo was been named ACC Freshman Volleyball Player of the Week.

This was an easy one for the selection committee...the outside-hitter from Texas led the Cards in kills in straight set wins over Wake Forest and Duke.

Cards shutouts on Sunday -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Another Sunday, another 1 p.m. start for two UofL women's sports programs. Another couple of victories. An intense 90 minutes follows below...

FIELD HOCKEY BLANKS NORTHEASTERN

Lotta Kahlert provided the scoring punch and the Stick Cards defense held firm in a 1-0 out-of-conference win against Northeastern.



Louisville (10-5) found the net seven minutes into the contest when Megan Anstotz sent a cross into the circle for Kahlert. The Hamburg, Germany native sent the ball past Huskies goalie Becky Garner for the lead and only goal of the contest.

Northeastern (4-11) didn't play like  sub .500 squad in a mid-major conference...out-shooting the Cards 11-8 in the 70 minutes and and receiving six corners to Louisville's two.

Ayeshia McFerran picks up her seventh shutout of the season. Louisville is undefeated in non-conference play. 

The Cards start a three-game homestand Sunday, Oct 25th. when Central Michigan visits Trager for a 1 p.m. start. 

VOLLEYBALL DOWNS DUKE IN THREE

Make it the eighth win in a row for the Wide Net Cards (helping my "steamed" colleague Worldwide fulfill his prophecy that they would win eight straight)...which coincides with their 8-0 record in the ACC. 

The Cards win the annual Dig Pink match in straight sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 against a strong and physical Duke squad that drops to 8-10 overall and 3-5 in-conference. 

Freshman Aniah Philo bolstered her chances to receive ACC Volleyball Freshman of the Week with 11 kills and 11 digs.



Janelle Jenkins nearly duplicated Philo's feat with nine kills and nine digs and Gabbie Wiley came off the bench with a powerful serving display...getting three aces for Anne Kordes' set and spike squad. 

Louisville Volleyball stays in the KFC YUM! Center for their next match...welcoming Notre Dame to downtown Louisville for a Wednesday 7 p.m. contest.

Ciera Johnson makes the 2016 Class another top 3 for Walz -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

6'4" JOHNSON ADDS TO THE ARSENAL


The comment we used to hear from time-to-time about Louisville women's basketball was that Jeff Walz didn't land big girls. To which we would explain that Walz would counter with that he was trying but 6'1" and 6'2" athletic leapers had done him pretty well in the past. 

6'4" Ciera Johnson can finally and definitively lay to rest the objection that Walz cannot bring height onto campus. She's the latest addition to a 2016 class that could have seven solid and tall paint dwellers reporting for duty in the fall of 2016. With Kylee Shook, Erin De Grate, Sam Fuerhing, Bionca Dunham, Cortnee Walton, Myshia Hines-Allen and Johnson...backboards and rims have something to fear in Cardinal Arena next year. 

Tall enough for you now, folks?

Strong in the post, capable of double-doubles each night, able to run the floor in the fast break, transition offense and a rebounding machine...the Duncanville, TX native verballed to the Cards over powerhouses Duke, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Texas A&M.  

She joins a class as a 5 star that is definitely top 3 for 2016. 5 star ranked Shook and Zambrotta, under-ranked 4 star Jazmine Jones and rapidly rising Bionca Dunham...this class rivals any out there.

Toss in the strong contingent of guards and wings Walz has acquired and Louisville has set the table for getting Walz back to the Final Four. 

Ciera Johnson, as so many recruits do, got a look at the Louisville campus, facilities...met the players and saw the community and it was a "no-brainer". 

Welcome aboard, CJ! In the meantime, someone needs to alert campus maintenance that a check needs to be done on doorway height at Belknap.

WBB TIP-OFF LUNCHEON TODAY

The Louisville Downtown Marriott will be the scene for the fall Women's Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon today. In case you were thinking about popping in to check it out, it is sold out...for the fourth straight year.

These are always fun affairs, and CARDINAL COUPLE will be there to capture the sounds and comments of the coaches and players. The pep-band, LadyBirds, video presentations and comments from the coaches and players always make this a highly-anticipated event. 

A surprise or two in the offing? You just never know what the Mad Scientist is going to produce.

HONORS AND RECOGNITION

Taylor Bucklin was named ACC Women's Soccer Co-Defender Of The Week for her outstanding efforts against North Carolina and Duke. 

All she did is shut out the Dookies and allow one goal to UNC in 219 minutes of action. Bucklin is the first to attribute her success to the defenders in front of her. 

54 shots were attempted against her in the last two contests. 18 were shots on goal. One got by her. 

Maybe they should start calling her Fort Knox...she's the impenetrable fortress that can't be accessed. 

Aniah Philo gathered ACC Freshman Of The Week honors for the Cards. The outside hitter had 17 kills, 19 digs and hit for .378 in UofL's recent two-game road trip to Georgia Tech and Clemson. 

Philo's rapid rise to a position of prominence on the Cards front line has helped Anne Kordes' squad post a 12-4 overall record and 6-0 ACC numbers. The Cards are also ranked #20 in the coaches poll and have a #17 RPI.

Cards hit Sunday trifecta with Volleyball, Field Hockey and Soccer wins -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

The locations ranged from downtown Louisville to Floyd Street to Syracuse, NY...but Louisville women's sports recorded three wins in the space of a frentic 150 minutes on Sunday afternoon. 

SOCCER BLANKS SYRACUSE 1-0 

The Kickin' Cards get their second 1-0 win of the week and Isabella Habuda got her second game-winner of the week as Louisville capitalized on a 12th minute goal and made it stick to improve to 6-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.

Taylor Bucklin finished with five saves for the Cards. Syracuse had a crazy 8-1 corner kick advantage over Louisville and outshot the Cards 7-6...including a nervous final 16 minutes where the Orange had scoring opportunities in the 74th, 76th, 87th and 89th minutes but Louisville's defense held. 

Karen Ferguson Dayes was happy with what she saw:

"A win on the road is huge in this conference. I'm really proud of this group. It was a great team win today. We will enjoy it the rest of the day and then get ready for our next opponent."

That would be #1 North Carolina, who will visit Lynn Stadium on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match

FIELD HOCKEY SCORES LATE TO BEAT MASS

About an hour after soccer got started, the action began in Trager Stadium on the UofL campus where a fatigued UofL Field Hockey team was facing Massachusetts. The Cards were returning from a tough match in Durham, NC against Duke in horrible weather conditions on Friday...but held it together to take a 1-0 win over UMass.

Defenses ruled through a scoreless first half and it wasn't until a mere seven minutes remained in the contest that Shannon Sloss found Nicole Woods in front of the UMass goal and got a pass to her that Woods slid past the UMass goalkeeper Sam Carlino for the only score of the game. 

Perhaps apropos for Woods to get the game-winner...the sophomore forward is from Beverly, MA....

Louisville goalie Ayeisha McFerran recorded two saves in her fifth shutout of the season. Louisville outshot the Minutewomen 10-6 and had a 9-3 edge in corners.

Justine Sowry challenged the team before the contest: 

"I talked at the very beginning of the game that you have to choose between one of two pains...it's either discipline or regret. Today we had to dig in deeper and be a very disciplined unit. We were fatigued, you could tell that, but we stayed together and we were able to get it done. It was not pretty but I'm just really proud of the effort that our team put forward and that we got it done." 

The Stick Cards will try to get it done again on Friday when #2 Syracuse visits Trager Stadium for a 6 p.m. game.

VOLLEYCARDS SWEEP EAGLES IN KFC YUM! 

Anne Kordes had a chance to use the entire roster in a straight set 25-12, 25-12, 25-17 sweep of the Boston College Eagles in a match that started right about the same time Field Hockey was doing battle on campus. 

Janelle Jenkins and Aniah Philo led a balanced Cardinal scoring attack with 12 kills each and the Cards hit .282 for the match while improving to 4-0 in the ACC and 9-4 overall.

Kordes reflected on the opponent, the team and the future after the contest: 

"I think Boston College is better than they played. There's no doubt about that. I watched them play on Friday Night against a good (Notre Dame) team. We have a big week this week playing on the road. We haven't been on the road in a little while. We use these opportunities to polish what we have been working on and we've got to stay focused." 

Louisville Volleyball heads to Georgia Tech Friday and then Clemson Sunday.

Women's Soccer grounds Eagles...Field Hockey and Volleyball face tests today -- Friday Cardinal Couple

HABUDA'S GOAL CARRIES CARDS TO 1-0 WIN OVER MOREHEAD

Isabella Habuda's follow up on a deflected shot on goal (or pass?) from Rachel Avant that hit the goal post at the 20 minute mark of the first half proved to be the only offense Louisville Women's Soccer needed Thursday night in a 1-0 win over Morehead in Lynn Stadium.

Habuda had a busy night for the Cards, taking five of UofL's 15 shots and two of their seven shots on goal. The sophomore from Belle River, Ont. scored her second goal of the season in a contest that was dominated by the Cards on both offense and defense. 

Louisville (5-5-1) held the Eagles (4-7-1) to a mere four shots and no shots on goal... goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin and defenders Inger Katrine-Bjerke and Hannah Konermann all logging 90 minutes on defense and turning away all Eagles attempts to find the net.

It was the third straight game Louisville women's soccer has played that had a 1-0 final score. Six of the Cards 11 contest this year have been 1-0 affairs...the Cards have gone 3-3 in these one-goal contests. 

Louisville returns to ACC play Sunday with a trip to Syracuse and then comes home to face #1 North Carolina, #22 Duke and #2 Florida State in a 11-day span before heading to play #3 Virginia.

#9 FIELD HOCKEY VS #5 DUKE TODAY

The battle against top-flight ACC squads continues for Justin Sowry's stick-swingers against Duke today in Durham, NC. 

Louisville will look for their first ACC win of the season against former UofL Field Hockey coach Pam Bustin. The Cards (6-3, 0-3) will face a Blue Devils squad (6-3, 0-2) bent on revenge after Louisville pulled the upset on them last season at Trager Field. 

Stephanie Byrne leads the Louisville squad with six goals on the season. Freshman goalie Ayeisha McFerran is ranked in the top 20 in several NCAA Field Hockey stats.

VOLLEYBALL IN THE KFC YUM! CENTER TONIGHT

Anne Kordes' Louisville Volleyball squad will look to extend their win streak to three when they face the Syracuse Orange tonight in the KFC YUM! Center at 7 p.m.

Louisville is undefeated (2-0) so far in ACC play and will face former Cardinal coach Leonid Yelin and his Syracuse squad that is 11-2 overall and also 2-0 in ACC matches. 

The Cards have had strong production from outside hitters Erin Fairs and Aniah Philo during the win streak and freshman libero Molly Sauer is a strong candidate for ACC Volleyball Freshman of the Year.

Louisville Volleyball goes to 2-0 in ACC...Soccer shut out by Pitt -- Monday CARDINAL COUPLE

FAIRS, PHILO LEAD CARDS TO MIAMI WIN

At this time last year, Erin Fairs was sending kills over the net in Tampa, FL. against AAC foes for USF and Aniah Philo was doing the same for her high school team in Texas. 

Fast forward to yesterday...when Fairs has 24 kills on a .391 hitting average and Philo added 14 kills with a .345 accuracy to lead Louisville to a 22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 win over the 'Canes to improve to 8-4 on the season and 2-0 in the ACC. 

A clipboard bites the dust in the Cards first game

Of possible concern is a late match foot injury to Katie George. The senior remained on the court despite it...the question is how serious is it and will she be ready for a tough weekend ahead where the Cards host Syracuse and Boston College. 

Another question arises on the status of Cards outside hitter Maya McClendon...who has been in uniform but hasn't participated against either Notre Dame or Miami. Last year's leader in kills...McClendon has been seeing less time this season with the arrival of Fairs and Philo on campus. 

WSOC DOWNED BY PITT 1-0

A scoreless affair in the first half and for 25 minutes of the second half in Lynn Stadium Sunday...which head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes pretty much expected...since both squad played a few days ago.

The Cards stand at 4-5-1 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. Louisville has not allowed more than two goals to anyone this season but has not scored more than two goals in any contest.

Pitt and Louisville each had 12 shots yesterday...the Panthers having seven of those on goal...compared to the Cards four. 

UofL will step out of conference Thursday night for a match against Morehead State at the Lynn Soccer Stadium.
