ACC Reveals Field Hockey and Women's Soccer Tournament Brackets -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WOMEN'S SOCCER A #6 SEED

The University of Louisville Field Hockey and Women's Soccer squads have made their respective, post-season ACC Tournaments. Sunday's action in Women's Soccer determined that the Louisville Women's Soccer squad, despite being idle, found that their 12 points would ultimately put them into a three-way tie for sixth place...with Notre Dame and Virginia Tech.

In cases like this, the seeding determination factor is...first...a goal differential tie-breaker. That advanced VT and the Cards and left Notre Dame as the #8 seed. Then, the determination went to the results of the head-to-head matchup between the remaining two squads, which the Cards won when they defeated the Hokies 1-0 on October 18th. 

The Cards avoided facing either FSU or UNC in opening round action and they'll go against #3 seed Virginia at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10th at the Wake Med Soccer Complex in Cary, NC. 

The top seed is Florida State. The Seminoles won the tie-breaker for top seed with North Carolina by taking the goal differential in conference games 21-16. After UNC in second, #3 seed went to Virginia. who had 16 points in conference play. Clemson is the #4 seed (15 points). Duke gets the #5 seed. 

Quarterfinal and semifinal action will be shown on the ACC Network and the finals are for ESPNU

 CARDS FIELD HOCKEY #1 SEED

Louisville Field Hockey earned the #1 seed in the ACC Field Hockey Tournament at Karen Shelton Staduim and will get a first-round bye in the seven-team format. The Cards and UNC TarHeels finshed with 7-1 conference records, but Louisville got the top slot because they won the regular-season match-up between the two squads. 

#4 seed Virginia will face #5 seed Wake Forest to start the tournament Thursday Nov 5th at 1:30. Then, it's #2 UNC against #7 Boston College at 4:30. The nightcap will feature #3 seed Syracuse and #6 seed Duke at 7 p.m.

The Cards get the winner of Virginia vs. Wake Forest on Friday at 2 p.m. in the semifinals to begin their play. 

As far as we know, all the matches will be televised on the ACcCNetwork.

 A Quiet Weekend

The Cardinal Couple Gang has enjoyed the fall season of competition, even with as topsy turvy as it has been here in 2020, but we find ourselves now with nearly a week coming up of no competitions.

ACC Tournament?

So, what's upcoming?  The next event on the schedule is the ACC Field Hockey Tournament, now to be held in Chapel Hill.

Louisville will be the top seed in the tournament, thanks to their 5-1 record in conference games.  The field is not officially set, yet, as Boston College and Wake Forest have a game to play today that will, perhaps, determine some of the seeding.

Boston College presents a question to which I don't have an answer.  If anyone can help find an answer on this, I would appreciate it.  BC comes into today's game with a 0-1 record.  No, that's not a typo, and yes you read it correctly.  Their schedule was suspended for much of the season due to a positive COVID-19 test on the team and contact tracing, with the program just restarting their program in time for today's game.  

The question is, what, specifically, is used to determine seedings in the tournament?  Is it number of wins, number of losses, win percentage, or some other way of processing those numbers?   (Note: there's no chance of any tie-breakers being needed, given the situation here)  Here's the conundrum:  If BC loses today, no big deal as they end up 0-2 and pretty clearly get the 7th and lowest seed in the tournament.  If they win, however, they finish the season with a 1-1 record.  Would they then be seeded 5th above Wake Forest at 1-5, and Duke at 1-4?  Would they, by virtual of finishing the conference slate with a .500 win percentage be ranked 4th above Virginia (2-3, .400)?

The tournament will begin Thursday, on the 5th, with games played on the 5th, 6th, and 8th.  By virtual of Louisville's top seed, they will not be playing on the 5th, so the Cards will next be in action Friday at 1:30pm.  All games from the Tournament will be on the ACC Network.

Women's Soccer will answer a lot of their questions on tournament seedings today with four contests, We know UNC and FSU are the top two seeds. As far as the final six seeds go -- it could come down to tie-breakers and such after today's matches. We think Louisville is in...but where they'll end up depends on the outcomes of the UNC vs. Notre Dame, Duke vs Miami, Clemson vs. FSU, Pitt vs. Wake Forest, Virginia Tech vs. Boston College and Virginia vs. Syracuse contests today.

Sufficiently confused yet? So are we...

Election Day

Some companies are making Election Day, this Tuesday, a day off to encourage and facilitate their employees participation in the election process by voting.  The NCAA has done effectively the same, designating Tuesday a day off for student athletes, to encourage those eligible to vote.  UofL teams have been quite active this year in getting themselves eligible to vote and encouraging other to get registered and to vote.

Cardinal Couple does make an effort to keep overt politics off of these pages, but we do encourage those eligible to participate in the democratic process to the fullest. The old adage of: "If you don't vote, don't complain." has varying degrees of accuracy, but, it's your right, so go acknowledge it!
