MATTIE TABOR SCORES THREE GOALS AGAINST STAGS
Senior Louisville Field Hockey forward (and Louisville Sacred Heart grad) Mattie Tabor scored the Cards last three goals in UofL's 5-0 win over Fairfield Sunday afternoon at Trager Field, Her first score came at the 20:40 mark in the first half and Louisville already up 2-0 on earlier goals by Aimee Plumb and Julie Kouijzer. The Cards were in a penalty corner formation and Tabor tracked down a blocked shot attempt and fired it past the Fairfield goalie and penalty corner crew to make it 3-0 Cards.
Mattie was far from being done.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Cards were in penalty corner formation again and Louisville sent a shot again at the goal. The original attempt by Katie Schneider was blocked but the ball bounced to Mattie and she redirected it across the goal line. Finally, with a little over two minutes passed in the fourth quarter, the Cards drew another penalty corner. It must have seemed like deja vu to Tabor, this time her original shot was blocked, the ball came to her and she gladly scooted it into the net for her third score. A hat trick and final score of the day for the Cards and Tabor.

The Cards bounced back well from their Friday loss to North Carolina. Louisville out-shot the Stags 21-4 and had a 15 to 1 advantage in shots on goal. Louisville drew nine penalty corners to just two for Fairfield.
Sasha Elliott had a pretty easy afternoon in goalkeeper, by goalie standards, with only one shot on goal attempted on her. The Cards defense, as you might expect, was largely responsible fot that low number as well. .
All five Cards goals came off penalty corner sets, which made Coach Justine Sowry happy..
And, Sunday afternoon was exactly what Louisville needed. After the disappointing loss to the TarHeels Friday, the Cards needed to "tear off the rear view mirror" (sorry, John L. Smith) and focus on future matches. They had the opportunity to look good against a Fairfield Stags opponent that is mid-level MAAC Conference material. Fairfield has just enough talent to hold their own and be competitive against top-flight conference members but UofL was on a mission and wasn't going to have a nail-biter.
The Cards bring in Indiana next for a Friday contest. Yes, it's the "battle of the border" and IU is unranked and 6-3, with losses to Kent State, #5 Iowa and #6 Liberty. IU has a win over Bellarmine 6-3 that they accomplished on 9/11.
