Tuesday Cardinal Couple - Softball and Field Hockey

Softball Weekend

A 2002 Louisville softball promo poster
UofL Softball comes out of the opening weekend with a 3-2 record and captures the inaugural American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.

Junior Kelsi Jones, on the strength of two homeruns and .438 hitting takes the first ever Player of the Week honor in the AAC.  Jones, an outfielder, is a transfer from Missouri and is from Carmel, IN.

Caralisa "Carl" Connell made the honor roll based on her 2-1 record and 14 strikeouts in 15 innings of pitching.

Louisville Softball claimed wins this past weekend in the first game of each day over Northern Illinois, Ohio State, and St. Johns.  In the second games of the double-headers on Friday and Saturday, UofL was bested by Florida Atlantic and Tulsa.

Transfer Kelsi Jones leads UofL in hitting
This weekend, the softball team returns to Florida for The Jacksonville Softball Tournament, another
five game round-robin affair.  Louisville starts with Kelsi Jones's former school, Missouri with a 12:45pm first pitch on Valentine's Day followed by a 3pm scheduled start against host school Jacksonville.

Saturday sees two matchups against future conference opponents starting in the morning with a 9:30am first pitch against Notre Dame.  The second game of the day for UofL sees a matchup with North Carolina scheduled for 11:45am.  Louisville finishes off the weekend with a 9am repeat matchup with North Carolina.  This should be a good weekend for Louisville Softball to get a feel for what competition will be like in the ACC.

The Cards return home and hope Ulmer Stadium thaws out in time for a home opener in the Cardinal Classic on Feb. 21st.

Field Hockey Signees

Anna DuFour and her sister Renee will be Cards
UofL Field Hockey signed five recruits to National Letters of Intent last week.

Nicole Woods will be coming to Louisville out of Beverly, MA on the north side of Boston.  Nicole decided between Ice Hockey and Field Hockey in coming to play forward here at Louisville.  Woods also considered playing at UMass, New Hampshire and Providence.

Abby Grimes is a midfielder out of Visitation Academy of St. Louis.  Abby is an great passer, look for her to tally a large number of assists.

Another midfielder out of the St. Louis area and the same club Field Hockey team is Marigrace Radsdale.

Louisville is almost getting a two-for-one deal with Anna and Renee DuFour.  No strangers to the Louisville campus, Anna and Renee are merely crossing the street from duPont Manual High School.  Part of Manual's 2011 State Championship team, I believe Anna and Renee are both midfielders.

  1. I am embarrassed to admit that, although I have season tickets to women's basketball and volleyball, I have never attended a softball, lacrosse or field hockey game. I vow to change that this year.

Did anybody notice Charlie Creme's latest bracketology on ESPN website - posted yesterday before UNC blasted Duke in Cameron? He was back to UConn, Duke, ND and Stanford as #1s, with Cardinals #2 in UConn's region. With Duke's loss I've got to think Cardinals are back in line for a #1, with UConn sent to Lincoln. Still a long way to go but winning out prior to Senior Night seems imperative to keep a #1 in play.

    1. Yep. I think Duke is done as a 1 seed now. They could easily lose 3 or 4 of their last 5 games. Momentum is all wrong for them right now. Stanford only plays one ranked team, ASU (14) who just got upset by Arizona. So Stanford will probably win out and get their #1. They did just get upset by unranked Washington though....

I'm betting it'll be UConn, ND, Stanford and Louisville. That said if we lose to anyone but UConn for the rest of the season we can forget about it.

  2. Last night was the nail in the coffin for Duke. No way they get the last #1 seed.
I see this as a 3 horse race:
Louisville (must win out until 3/3, and still no guarantee. IF we could beat Uconn once, would be a shoe in).
Baylor, if they win out and are Big 12 champions
Winner of the SEC, which currently looks like South Carolina. SC, would also likely need to win out. If either of the latter two take some losses,I think it isLouisville's to lose, even if we drop 2 (or 3) more to Uconn.

I think the SOS hurts Louisville. Even though we had wins against ranked USF, Colorado and Oklahoma, none are in the top 25 any more. So, the wins do not look as good. The only currently ranked opponent we have beaten is LSU. That is why either the winner of SEC or Big 12 could take the last spot, if they win out.

    just my humble opinion.
