A Cardinal Couple Worldwide Quiz -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

THE LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK QUIZ

And, in the "Just when you thought you had made it through the summer without one of Paulie's quizzes" department...you know I wouldn't let ya down...

It was mentioned on our immensely popular, low in calories and somewhat shady podcast Saturday that we hadn't had a quiz on the show this year.. And, that was true. We were fortunate to have a lot of things to discuss each week in the world of Cardinals women's sports and didn't need to fill a 20-30 minute gap of dead air with one of my notorious quizzes during "the summer slump".  So, I figured I'd spring one on you as we get ready for fall sports to begin.

Today's quiz subject will cover things that happened in the 2021-22 season and a glimpse into the future. Remember the rules? (Yeah, I thought not...) Relax, they're simple. Please don't cheat by Googling the answer. Please do not call any coaches, student-athletes or sports information directors for the correct answer. And, in the scoring category...you get 10 points for each correct answer and the option to take a bonus question at the end of the quiz...where you could pick up 20 points, or have 20 points subtracted from your score. Do not pass "Go", do not mix cottage cheese and bratwurst and always flash "the L" the correct way.

Questions? Comments? Complaints? Take them up with Case...I'm far too busy to put up with your 'points of order' and disputes. Answers at the end of the quiz. You are on the honor system, which is, I know akin to asking a hungry beagle to watch a freshly grilled steak for you while you go to a neighbor's. .

Ready? Away we go:

1) Which women's sports below had the best overall record last year (percentage wise)?

(A) Women's Soccer (B) Field Hockey (C) Volleyball (D) Women's Basketball

2) Which squad will freshman Nyla Harris play for?

(A) Lacrosse  (B) Swimming (C) Women's basketball (D) Mountain Climbing

3) We played our 2021-22 games "at Dobina". We are:

(A) Cheryl Hines (B) Korbe Otis (C) Burton Ernie (D) Carmyn Greenwood

(A) India Reed (B) Indiana Jones (C) Sofia Pendolino (D) Malachi Mahan

(HALFTIME...hit the locker room or go outside for some fresh air or perspective . Or a slice of pizza!)

6) Kokoro Nakazawa played which sport for UofL in the 2021-22 season?

(A) Women's basketball (B) Bocci (C) Lacrosse (D) Field Hockey

Cards In The Pros - Sunday Cardinal Couple

 NY Liberty Lose in OT

Kylee Shook was back in the starting lineup for the NY Liberty yesterday, and made two baskets, including a three pointer, but the Liberty would go on to the lose the game in overtime, 90-87.

Even had the Liberty won this game, film sessions on it would be filled with lessons learned on what not to do.  The Liberty came out flat, and were plagued with turnovers early.  They did get it in gear and turned the ship around by the end of the game.  The turnovers ended up almost even with the Atlanta Dream 20-17 by the end of the game.

In addition to the pair of baskets, Shook also contributed a trio of both rebounds, and assist.  She had a big blocked shot towards the end of the game, but with little rebounding help under the basket Elizabeth Williams was able to get a second, and third attempt, and the third time was the charm.

Jaz Jones saw the floor for about 13 minutes of playing time, got a bucket and a pair of free throws, though if you go back and watch the highlights you see plenty of her celebrating her teammates' success on the sidelines as the camera kept returning to her.  This, of course, comes as no surprise to anyone who saw her antics at UofL.  She did draw lots of commentary from the broadcast crew, and with good reason.  Her aggressive lock-down defense was in full effect and she pulled down four rebounds, again a stat that we know she can excel in with her quickness and leaping ability.

After a hot start of the season, it's disappointing to see the Liberty drop this one.  Sabrina Ionescu had an off performance, with only two field goals, though some credit must go to the Atlanta Dream as they consistently swamped her with double-teams.

The big performers for the Liberty were the rookie Michaela Onyewere, with ten buckets and six of them from beyond the arc; and Sami Whitcomb, who dropped six buckets with five of them being threes.  Whitcomb was also extremely active on defense getting four steals from the Dream.

Dana Evans will be in action with the Dallas Wings Tuesday evening.  You can catch this one on ESPN3 streaming, and Shook and Jones with the Liberty will play again Thursday evening on YES network with extremely limited alternative streaming options.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

The CCRHP was back in action again yesterday as well, and we had the return of the Cardinal Couple Quiz!  Jared got the win over me in this one.  Case is off doing who knows what and Daryl had a conflicting appointment so couldn't join either.

We pretty much put a bow on the UofL sports year, wrapping up coverage of Lauren Hartlage in the NCAA Championship.  We then went on to talk about the WNBA a bit, we looked forward to the announced UofL vs UConn matchup in the fall.  We also took a few minutes to highlight Meghan Schneider's contributions as she was named a finalist for the Honda Award for Field Hockey.

See how you do against Paulie's challenging quiz below!

RANDOM STUFF -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

RANDOMNESS

(Paulie sent in for the Sunday Cardinal Couple article out of the bullpen today. It seems Jeff has Sammy the Shark issues and will be back on these pages Monday. Sorry this is late...I slept in this morning and it seems no one ever uses the "call" function on their cell phones anymore...I saw the text about three hours after Jeff sent it to our group chat).

Quick question, do you ever call anyone on your cell phone anymore? Leave your response in the comments section.

We are in the process of re-establishing the daily Poll Question here at Cardinal Couple.

TEETER'S CANADIAN U 19 WORLD CUP SQUAD EARNS SILVER

It was USA vs. Canada for the Gold in the World Cup U 19 Tournament and USA had little trouble in capturing the Gold 13-3.

"They're a veteran team and considered some of the best players In the world who are competing in the NCAA right now," Canadian coach Scott Teeter said, of the U.S. "A lot of our girls haven't played an NCAA game yet. Our 2015 team was a little bit older than we are right now. We'll take this experience and it will definitely pay dividends for our senior team."

Teeter squad lost just twice in the 22-team event, both times to USA.

FIGHT!

Asia Taylor and Arica Carter probably didn't expect this when they joined the Phoenix Mercury roster.

With about six minutes left in the fourth quarter of a close game against the visiting Dallas Wings and on Brittney Griner Bobblehead Day, the 6'9" Mercury center and Wings post Kristine Angiwe locked arms going for a rebound and chaos ensued. It appeared Angiwe attempted to punch Griner after they untangled and then sprinted away from the towering center toward the Wings bench with Griner in hot pursuit.

Both benches empties and it took referee Billy Smith and several coaches to restrain the combatants. Six players were tossed from the game after a lengthy review, including non-active Diana Taurasi...who appeared to be serving as a peace-keeper but was pitched for leaving the bench.

Phoenix is struggling to remain in the top eight of the WNBA standings and make the playoffs. Myisha Hines-Allen and her Washington squad are tied for the league lead, so they're 99.9% assured of a playoff berth. Asia Durr's NY Liberty are in 10th. place overall and need to catch fire in August to crack the top eight.

Neither Taylor nor Carter were expelled or threw any punches. Dallas went on to win 80-77.

CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR

Paulie's pre-show prep.
Three of us took to the airwaves and Facebook Live from the majestic, media mansion on Mellwood for The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour yesterday. Case, Jeff and I had a great discussion on several upcoming UofL women's Fall sports and our final Cardinal Couple Radio Quiz for the season went to Jeff 100-80.

You can join in on the fun and take the quiz at the link below. Jared claims an "off-site" score of 110 while shirking important work duties to listen. We'll award him the remaining toothpick from the one-eared, toothpick holding bear ceremonial winner's trophy whenever he shows up again.

Louisville Volleyball: Breakout Players and The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

Volleyball Breakouts?

It's a lazy Sunday morning, and the first event on the Cards Athletic calendar is still almost two weeks away.  Jared pronounced his expected breakout players on Wednesday, but do remember, this is the guy that predicted two goals per game average for Minout Mink in Field Hockey a couple of years ago.

Case also did some digging into Soccer a bit more deeply recently, so let's take a look at how the Volleyball roster is shaping up.

First off, Jared predicted Piper Roe as his breakout player for Volleyball, and that's not a bad choice, but looking at the roster at gocards.com, we've got four middles listed, two of which, Emily Scott along with Roe, saw action as Cardinals last year.  Anna Stevenson is joining as a 6'1" transfer from Auburn as a Junior.  She put up 1.15 blocks/set in 2018 down in Alabama.

Also, we have Amaya Tillman joining as a freshman, and the little bit of video I've seen of her play is quite impressive.  So the field is crowded in the middle.  Of course, a typical Volleyball lineup will include two middles, so there is definitely opportunity for Roe to make her mark known.  My selection will probably be Tillman, however.

For pin hitting, we only have a single opposite hitter listed, although it's not that much of a challenge for left sides to shift over to the right side and swing.  Aiko Jones has an opportunity as that specialist opposite, however.  Jones took a red-shirt last year, to give her some time to develop her game, she has amazing athleticism, but the question of the pre-season is how much refinement can she bring to her play.  She's been working hard, and has a great attitude.

For pin hitting overall, however, I have to look to Claire Chaussee.  We know she has power, both at the pin and from back the serving line, however there is a real need to bring some control to it.  If she can tighten it up just a little bit, perhaps sacrificing just a little bit of that power to do it, this could be a major breakout year for her.  If she does, look for us to be talking about Chaussee as the next Melanie McHenry.

And, of course, McHenry will have a great year, but her breakout was really the first weekend of play her freshman year at Bowling Green State when she won the MVP of the weekend, so she'll just be continuing to build on her excellence here in her finale season.  Nena Mbonu is coming in as a freshman, and is just a really big question mark right now.  There's athleticism there, but what comes to fruition from it?  How ready is she for D1 level of play?  We'll get a glimpse on the 17th.

I've been saying for months that the setting position is Tori Dilfer's position to lose.  A transfer from TCU who will be in her sophomore season with us, played on the US Collegiate National Team that went to the WUGs and she definitely has skills.  Early reports, however, point to this being more competitive than I was expecting, with Shannon Shields, an incoming freshman, receiving lots of kudos.  Either could potentially have what we could consider breakout seasons.

Lastly, in defense, I have no reason to believe anyone other than Alexis Hamilton will don the libero jersey, but for breakout performance, I think I would point to Mia Stander.  She got pressed into action last year, a bit sooner than she was really expecting, I believe, thanks to various injuries and performed well as a true freshman.

Molly Sauer graduated, Kelly O'Neal is not listed on the roster at all this year after dealing with back problems and missing nearly the whole season last year.  With more D1 level preparation, this could be a great year for Stander.  The competition here, is Akela Yuhl, who has also contributed well at times, and an incoming freshman Alexa Hendricks.  Again, as an incoming freshman, Hendricks will be a bit of a question mark, but comes from a good background, matriculating to UofL from the KIVA/Assumption High School pipeline that has sent so many excellent Defensive players on to play for so many schools over the years.

OK, I hear you all saying that I'm dodging by looking at positions and you want a single breakout performance prediction for the year.  I'm still going to caveat this a bit, but, here we go.

Claire Chaussee will get the most attention for breakout play, but my personal expectation of
breakout performance credit will go to Mia Stander.  Chaussee will get more attention overall because she's an offensive player, and offense always gets more attention that defense, pretty much in any sport, but I believe the short-stuff (5'3") defender from Atlanta will have the biggest improvement in play and contributions to making this team a better team.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

Was it a breakout performance for the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour?  Eh, well, we had fun, even with just Paulie and I in the studio.  I ended up scoring a respectable 80 on the quiz after a hot first half, and a disappointing second half.  We will be working on our concentration exercises as we start gearing up for the beginning of the fall season.

We discussed the new KFC YUM! CENTER logo, Louisville women's soccer, Volleyball and much more before the quiz and after.

Wishing Well to the WUGs -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WUGs Wrapups

We've been covering the World University Games, which are formally called the 30th Summer Universiade.  "The WUGs" is so much more fun to say, though.

Alas, the games are wrapping up, with the last competition and closing ceremonies happening today.

Case covered the results for Molly Fears in Diving yesterday, graciously leaving me the volleyball competition to recap.

Of course, if you have read or tuned in to Cardinal Couple regularly, you know the Tori Dilfer was one of the setters on the women's volleyball team at the WUGs this summer as part of the US Collegiate National Team program.

The results, to my mind, were a little disappointing.  The US team faced 5 different opponents in 6 matches, and finished the competition in 9th place.

The format of the competition is a little unusual, but laudably designed to give every team a chance toplay the same number of matches.  16 teams are divided into 4 pools of 4 teams each.  After pool play a tournament bracket is seeded with all 16 teams.  At each match of the tournament bracket, the bracket is split in half with winners advancing to matches competing for higher finishes, and losers dropping to compete for lower overall finishes.  Coming out of a tough Pool D with Japan, Italy, and Switzerland, the US had a record of 1-2, meaning they were seeding in the bottom half of the bracket, competing for positions 9-16.  In the bracket, the US won out, beating the Ukraine to move up to competing for positions 9-12, Argentina to be able to compete for positions 9 and 10, and finally a rematch with Switzerland to win the 9th place finish.

Individual stats are not available for the matches, so we have very little feel for how Tori did with the team, but are confident she represented the Cards well.  We look forward to see her on the floor at "L&N Federal Credit Union Arena" nee Cardinal Arena in 34 days for the Red and Black scrimmage and in 41 days for her first official match as a Cardinal against Miami (OH).

Cardinal Couple Circus

I would say the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour went off the rails yesterday, but, really, I don't think it was ever on the rails to begin with.  Paulie, Case, Jared, and myself were in studio.

We had a lots of fun, oh so much fun, and ragged on Paulie quite a bit, but thankfully there are not a lot of sporting events to talk about.  We did catch up on some basketball news, mostly Cards in the Pros, with updates on Sam Fuerhing heading to Germany, and then veering wildly (though with connections every step of the way) to Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe and the US Women's National Team in Soccer.

Strap in and check it out, and match up with us in the Cardinal Couple Quiz.

Case blew the bonus question and I won the quiz in the bottom of the ninth.

A Cardinal Couple Reader Quiz -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

BUT, PAULIE...IT'S SUMMER !!

On The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour each week, during the summer months, I present a quiz to the group that is in the studio with me. it's a fun way to learn a little bit about the women's sports on the UofL campus and also sparks a little bit of rivalry and competition between the "A-Team" members.

Sunday Cardinal Couple - WUGs Update - WWC

WUGs Update

The WUGs, The World University Games, are a favorite of Cardinal Couple, mostly because it's fun to say.  Go ahead, "The WUGs", say it out loud, it's just fun to say it.

There are also a couple of UofL rooting interests involved, so let's get a bit of an update on where they stand.

Molly Fears has broken new territory for UofL Swimming and Diving by competing at a very high level, and now in international competitions from the diving side of the swimming and diving team.  At the WUGs, Molly was competing in the platform competition, and the finals in that event occurred on the 4th.  Fears wrapped up the competition with a very respectable 11th place finish.

I believe Molly will be a senior with the Cards this year.  She has already elevated the level of competition for UofL Diving quite a bit, and I can't wait to see what she accomplishes this year.

Shifting to another sport, incoming transfer junior Tori Dilfer is one of the setters for the Volleyball team at the WUGs.  In depth statistics are essentially unobtainable from these matches, but the US contingent fell in their first match to Itally in 3 close sets, (25-19, 25-22, 25-23).  The next day, they defeated Switzerland in 3 straight sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-16), and are, at the time of this writing, locked in a struggle with Japan, currently trailing 2-0 (25-15, 25-18, 2-2).

Tori will hit the court as a Cardinal in public competition for the first time on August 17th at 6 p.m. in the Red and Black Scrimmage.  The first official match for Dilfer with the Cards will be a week later, August 24th at 3pm against Miami of Ohio.

Women's World Cup

The Championship game of the Women's World Cup kicks off at 11 a.m. this morning.  There is no Cardinal rooting interest in this one, but this is a major event with women's sports and I wanted to highlight a couple of aspects of it.

There has been some public commentary, let's just put it that way, about these women and their role and message and how comport themselves on the International Stage.

These women are competing at the very highest level of their sport, reaching the championship match of the most prestigious event in their sport, and yet they are still having to fight for the most basic of respect from much of the public.  There is progress being made, don't get me wrong, they have more respect from the public than ever before, but just in this event they have had to weather idiotic comments about their goal celebrations being too exuberant...but soccer playing men are oh so restrained in their celebrations?!  They've continued to fight, both in the press and in the courtroom for something approaching equal pay for the men while, for the past 3 years, generating more revenue for the US Soccer Federation than the men.

FIFA made a big show, in October of 2018 of doubling the prize money for this year's WWC, and they just announced that it will be doubled again for the 2023 WWC, but let's look at those numbers.  The prize money for this year's WWC is a total of 30 million dollars, mean the increase from this year's WWC, is also 30 million.  The men's World Cup prize in 2018 was 400 million dollars, and in 2022 it will be 440 million, and increase of 40 million.  The pay gap is, in absolute terms, getting worse.  Will FIFA continue to double the WWC prize money in years to come?  I hope so, because that will result in the women's prize money coming into line with the men over time.  This is already an overdue change, and by the time doublings will resolve this it will be egregiously overdue, but if the trend continues it will eventually result in the correction

Meanwhile, in the US Soccer Federation, women make a fraction of what the men make, receive a fraction of the bonus money for the same accomplishments on top of a fraction of their base salary.

OK, so we have a long way to go, but I do want to take a moment to highlight a moment, that I think shows how far things have come, and I think may have been a spark for a subtle social change.

Almost exactly 2 decades ago, July 10th, 1999, the US and China were competing in the finals of the Women's World Cup, in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.  After 120 minutes of playing time, the teams remained scoreless and the game was to be decided on penalty kicks.  After 4 rounds of PKs, there had been only 1 save, by the US GK Briana Scurry, leaving the score at 4-3 in the US's favor.  China had the first kick and scored on their 5th kick, tieing the score at 4.  If the US player scored on the 5th kick, the US wins the game, and the World Cup...no pressure.  If you remember the event, the name alone will surely remind you of the outcome, and the moment.  The US left back would take the kick, Brandi Chastain.

You remember, right?  She puts the kick in the bottom right corner of the net and in an emotional and impulsive celebration, fell to her knees and ripped her jersey off roaring in celebration.  The rest of the team rushes to embrace her and surround her, but for a good 10 to 12 seconds Chastain was alone on the field in her black sports bra.

Its an iconic moment, certainly one that I will never forget, and I think that it was a spark that led to a change in the way our society generally, though still with odious exceptions, relates to women in sports, and particularly to the presence of visually athletic women.

In 1999, a visible sports bra was a social faux pas that gave sports opinion columnists full employment for months, meanwhile, in most places in the US, today in 2019, it's not uncommon to see a woman out for an evening run in jogging shorts and effectively a sports bra during summer months.

I make the claim that Chastain, at least in this country, jump started the conversation.  That conversation has led, in my opinion, to a much more healthy approach to women's athleticism in this country.

Yes, we've still got a long way to go, I still regularly see people complain about the WNBA, or other top level women's sports about it being "unwatchable", and when pressed are unable to give any reason other than, "it just is," or "it's not as athletic as the men's game."

We'll get there, I think, but it may take a long time, but thank you to Brandi Chastain, even if her actions were totally impulsive as she has claimed in interviews, I think your iconic moment has lead to a sea change for the better in this country.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

Summer activities have thinned the ranks of the in-studio personnel for Cardinal Couple, with only Paulie and I being in the studio yesterday, but the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour continues on.  Basketball, Softball, and more were on the discussion menu, and, I think, a really fun quiz.

Check it out at Facebook:

Curtis already chimed in with his respectable score of 60 on the quiz.  I matched Paulie's over/under with a 70, see if you can do better.

A History of Women's Sports Chapter 2: Field Hockey -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

A History of Women's Sports Chapter 2: Field Hockey

In continuation for the summer Friday posts we move onto the second edition of our history lesson.  Last week I covered volleyball, the next women's sport to have a game (over 70 days away).  The next team in line to play a game is field hockey.

(Note: Stats and figures comes from multiple sources including GoCards, the Courier-Journal, the NCAA, and more. Very little information is given for early years.)

The first official tracked year by most standards for Louisville Field Hockey began in the fall of 1976.  However, UofL actually started the sport back in 1927.  Lillian "Tucky" Sanders was the first coach for the Cards, but no records or stats were listed anywhere.  They did make national news the following season by traveling to Nashville to play Peabody College.  At the time, schools stayed local for games and by traveling a few hours out of town Louisville became the first Southern School girl's/women's hockey team to travel long distance for a game.

"Mrs. B and the squad on her birthday last fall"
Any mention of the "early days" of Louisville Field Hockey must include Sherrill Brakmeier.

She graduated from UofL in 1944 and was a four year player on the UofL Field Hockey squad. Upon graduation, she went into a 30-year tenure as the head coach of the squad. She has the distinction of being the first woman to be inducted into the University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame. Mrs "B" taught volleyball, basketball, fencing, bowling as well.

She still attends at least one game a season, has a reserved seat in the press box and the squad celebrates her birthday post-game. She'll gladly tell you stories about those days, she drove one of the team vans, prepared snacks for the girls post-game, lined the field, arranged for referees and trained her student-athletes to work as volunteers with the Special Olympics and many other charitable, non-profit groups. "Mrs. B" has also been known to bring "treats" to the game and offer them to the working media and staff. Still a legend in her nineties and able to follow and comment on the action.

It wasn't until 1972 that field hockey became a varsity sport at UofL, the same year women's basketball, tennis, volleyball and gymnastics became varsity sports too.

--Tangent alert!!! I never knew UofL had a varsity gymnastics team.  This is one sport I've mentioned in the past I'd like to get on campus at some point.  The old program lasted from 1972-1982 before it was cut.  Perhaps we will see a new program begin in the future with the rise of gymnastics nationwide.  End tangent.--

About the time Paulie was making his presence known on the Belknap Campus, Field Hockey was participating against a lot of regional schools. His recollection of the squad is:

"They were a fun-loving, aggressive bunch who were mostly in the same sorority on campus. I had a friend who dated one of the defense players and their parties were pretty legendary. Not only were they a pretty "easy-on-the-eyes" group of women, they had a strong unity and camaraderie and always did well in the classroom. The roster had a lot of girls from the Catholic high schools in the Louisville area back then and a good amount of them still lived at home and commuted to school and practices."

Sandy McLaughlin (later McLaughlin-Tabler) commanded the sticks beginning 1976 and they joined the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference.

Louisville opened up their first fully tracked season with a 3-1 victory over Hanover College (IN).  They would go on to finish the year 9-2 with both losses coming against Eastern Kentucky.  During this time period Kentucky still had an official field hockey team and the Cards are 7-0 all-time against them.  McLaughlin stayed with the program through 1980.  Although there is no record of where she went from there I did find a Sandy McLaughlin in Louisville that was a district court judge up through this year.

Debbie Codreva took over in 1981 and stayed with the Cards for four years.  Not much is known about her since her departure other than her occasional appearances at alumni events.

Cheri Hauber became the next head coach in 1985 and was head coach for two years before leaving.

In 1987, Theresa Young became the next head coach.  Young remained through 1991 and left after finding little success with the program.

Bridgett Strickler took over in 1992 and was with UofL through 1995.  During her time as head coach the Cardinals joined the MAC for field hockey but had little success on the field

Cate Clark was head coach from 1996-1997.  She was the youngest Division 1 field hockey coach at the time and is now the Associate Dean of Admissions at Regis University (CO) according to her LinkedIn profile.

Pam Bustin entered the picture in 1998 and
stayed through 2010.  Hired by Tom Jurich, Bustin was UofL's first full-time field hockey head coach.  Her career started bumpy but quickly turned around at the millennium mark.  During her time as head coach the Cards found themselves in the national rankings on several occasions and joined the Big East Conference.  She eventually left UofL and is now the head coach at Duke, a current conference rival for the Cards.  UofL beat Bustin and the Blue Devils in the ACC Tournament in 2017.

Current head coach Justine Sowry first took over as head coach in 2011.  Since her arrival to the program Louisville has been considered a powerhouse in field hockey, often ranking in the Top 10 and making several NCAA Tournament appearances.  The transition to the ACC has been rough, seeing as the ACC dominates in field hockey, but Sowry has helped the Cards adjust to keep them in the spotlight.  Sowry served as an assistant under Bustin from 1998-2002.

Trager Stadium is the Cards' current home and has been since 2000, where they hold a winning record.  It has been the site for conference tournaments and NCAA Championships.  It was hard tracing back to other home field locations but Crawford Gymnasium Field played host site for field hockey for a long time.  The field and gymnasium have both been demolished and replaced by a rapidly growing campus. They also played in the area considered the outfield for the old Parkway Field where Louisville Baseball played.

Jessica Javalet is perhaps the most decorated field hockey player for UofL, where she played from 2003-2006.  She led the nation in scoring her junior year and is in first on many UofL record lists.  She most recently played on the US Rugby team at the Rio Olympics.

Nicole Youman also sits high in the record books, finishing behind Javalet in many offensive categories.

The Cards have had a long list of All-Americans with Ayeisha McFerran being the most recent and UofL's first four-time All-American.  The recently graduated goalkeeper is considered one of the best in Louisville history, and a favorite of Cardinal Couple.  We will miss her Irish accent on post-game interviews.  Katie Walsh and Taylor Stone both graduated with McFerran this past year.

Louisville starts the fall season with the annual alumnae game on Saturday, August 24, with the first regular season game being Friday, August 30, against Indiana.

You can catch Paulie, Worldwide and myself covering many of the home games live as we attempt to dodge the powerful attack of the sprinkler. You might even catch me playing the national anthem on the euphonium or taking pictures of the action on the turf....as well as catching Paulie's post-game interviews with Coach Sowry.

A WBB Quiz for you today -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

As the University of Louisville women's athletic teams start to get into the part of the year where they aren't involved in competition against other schools, we get ready for THE CARDINAL COUPLE WORLDWIDE QUIZ segments on our Saturday radio shows. These have proven to be a lot of fun, have created controversy and generally take up about half the show in our broadcasts after Derby.

Yes, I know. There is still Cardinal women's sports activity going on.  Softball is still roaring along strongly. Women's golf and track still have meets to compete in. It seems something is always going on with swimming and diving as well, so not all Cardinal women's student-athletes are in off-season training mode. We'll go through a bit of training today, though -- call it our Spring Training Cardinal Couple Quiz.

You're on the honor system for these. If you do well, let us know about it. You get 10 points for each correct answer. You'll have a bonus question at the end where you can pick up another 10 points.

You can choose NOT to take the bonus question and, in a twist from last year, you'll lose 20 points if you get it wrong but GAIN 20 points if you get it right. I'll list the correct answers at the bottom of today's article. Good luck! Today's quiz topic will be women's basketball

Before we get to the correct answers, let's take a minute to give a shout out to the UofL women's golf squad. For the sixth consecutive year, they've qualified to play in the NCAA Regionals.

The Cards will travel to East Lansing, MI as the #11 seed to participate in regional action May 6-8 on the Forest Akers West Golf Course.

No, it's not a mis-spell on "Acres". It is "Akers".

Louisville Football had a excellent kicker named David Akers who went on the play in the NFL for 17 seasons and six different teams. I wonder if he bought a golf course and named it after himself after he retired from the NFL?

Anyway...the Cards hope to repeat or better last year's regional performance, where they took 4th in the San Francisco Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championships.

The Cards did finish fifth in the recent ACC Championships. Head Women's golf coach Courtney Trimble is retiring after this season to spend more time with her family. Let's hope for the best for Margot Bechadergue, Olivia Cason, Lauren Hartlage, Mairead Martin, Meghan Nay, Delaney Shah, Lauren Thibedeau and Linda Trockel on the links!
