Congrats graduates! -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

It's commencement weekend for spring graduates for UofL and I want to say congratulations to the Class of 2025!

Enjoy this fair quality photo below from my ceremony down at the KFC Yum! Center 10 years ago.   Which is crazy to think about...

I also wanted to say Happy Mother's Day weekend to all the mommas out there and especially my mom, who has made my life so pleasurable and easy.  Mothers really do make the world go 'round.  I wouldn't have been able to get this far without mine.

Also want to shout out to Coach Teeter for stopping by the office the other day!

WOMEN'S COACHES COACHES RECEIVE CONTRACT EXTENSIONS -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 TEETER, COPELAND GET CONTRACT EXTENSIONS

Two of the coaches in the University of Louisville women's programs recently received contract extensions.

Scott Teeter, head women's lacrosse coach, got contract enhancements and a three year extension, thru June 30, 2028. Teeter is in his eighth year at Louisville, and came in and basically rebuilt the program after the Kellie Young debacle. In 2024 Lacrosse reached the ACC Quarterfinals, and has also set a new record for goals and saves in a game by a player and the team.

All-American Nicole Perroni ended with a 55 game scoring streak and a 54 game goal scoring streak. Perroni was also naked as an assistant coach for Colgate University for the 2025 program and the program is 7-6 this season and is in fifth place in the Patriot  League, currently on a three game win streak.

Teeter's squads get it done in the classroom as well, achieving the IWLCA GPA Award in four of his years here.

Derek Copeland also received an extension on his contract...the Cards head women's rowing coach has rebuilt and revitalized the program, while competing in one of the toughest conferences in women's rowing. Copeland was named head coach in 2014 and was the guiding force behind the continued improvements of the multi-million dollar Louisville Rowing facility on River Road. the G. Garvin III Rowing Center. The facility has offices for Copeland, two assistant coaches, boathouse manager and a graduate assistant. It also has a student study area and lounge, showers and can accommodate 80 student athletes with an equipment room and weight training center.

Congratulations to both these hard working dedicated coaches, who may not always receive the notoriety and public recognition as some of the others in the women's programs but are important program builders and leaders in the UofL coaching community.

An Interview with Scott Teeter -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Lacrosse Opens Season Next Week

With Louisville lacrosse set to start their season on February 7th at home against Denver, what better time than now to check in with head coach Scott Teeter? Yesterday, Paulie and Jared did just that, heading down to the Planet Fitness Kueber Center for a preseason chat. The guys got Teeter going and turned their conversation into a 20-minute experience. I encourage you to listen to the full interview at the link below, but here are some of my key takeaways.

Here is the listening link:  2025 Season Preview with Scott Teeter

On the Season Opener

Teeter opened with how excited the team is to get going. According to him, they've reached the point in the offseason where they just need to play another team. They're excited to play and practicing hard, but there's only so much you can do when every practice is running offensive sets that the defense already knows are coming.

Denver graduated a lot of players, much like Louisville. Denver's pride is defense and they lost a number of All-American defenders.

Denver does well with one year transfers and a number of players will step up, including some Canadians they know quite well.

With the changes, Louisville still knows they will be quite defensive focused. The scout is very different with a number of new players and a new offensive coordinator from Ohio State.

On This Year's Team

Louisville graduated a ton of minutes from last season, including, per Teeter, over 50% of their scoring offense. They'll look for experienced players to step up and fill the roles left open by Nicole Perroni, Kokoro Nakazawa, Allegra Catalano, and Kylie Dobson, but it will largely be by committee.

Players he expects to be a big part in stepping up include Lauren Figas, Rian Adkins, Negai Nakazawa, Izzy Seikel, and Maggie McMahon.

When asked for players that would be names that would grow in Louisville fans' consciousnesses, Teeter went back to the same well: McMahon, Nakazawa, Seikel, Figas, and Adkins.

The freshmen to watch include Ella Berg, who Teeter thinks is a top-ten freshman in the country. Berg scored the most goals for Louisville in fall ball. He also mentioned new attackers in Issy Leech and Kate Daniels.

Defensively, names that came up as standing out were Ashley Osborne (a 6th year player returning after losing her senior year in 2023 to injury. Osborne was a 4-time team MVP for Ballard and was Miss KY Lacrosse) and senior Ava Coyle. Young defenders may not start but will contribute significant minutes.

On the Weather

It's been unfortunate to not have the practices outside, with that making them unable to use one of the only dedicated women's lacrosse facilities in the country, but the UofL facilities made it easy to move indoors without missing much of a beat. Teeter chose to take the positives from the experience, noting it helps them with the difference in playing surfaces and should give some of the girls more of an opportunity to get inside playing experience before they go play at Marquette.

On the ACC

Excited about the new look ACC and playing Stanford and Cal for the first time, with Cal on the road to open the ACC conference season. Working on what the logistics of playing all the way in California will look like.

The ACC schedule will be difficult with UNC and BC among the top favorites to win the national championship. He also name checked Virginia, Syracuse, and Notre Dame, and believes the ACC is the top conference in the country.

Happy to see the expansion of lacrosse as more programs like FSU add a team and is looking forward to the return of lacrosse to the Olympics in 2028.

On Rule Changes

This is largely a non-change year as the rules are on a two-year cycle. One change to note is that midfield charges will now just be a common foul with change of possession rather than a green card penalty.

It was a three-pronged approach to adjustment last season. Coaches had to change their systematic approach, players had to change the way they play, and officials adjusted the way they called the game.

A Surprise for Paulie

As we look ahead to the new season, Paulie was curious about how Negai is adjusting to life in the US and on the team without Kokoro. Always happy to get one over on Paulie, Teeter was glad to say that they haven't needed to address that as Kokoro hasn't gone anywhere: she's the student assistant for UofL this season.

Kokoro has largely served as a personal coach for Negai, but is also focused on helping the other attackers. Negai is playing very confidently after the gold medal for Japan and Teeter expects her to fill the role largely left by Kokoro.

Lacrosse, Two Weeks To Go -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Louisville Lacrosse Approaches Regular Season

Louisville lacrosse is quickly approaching the start of the 2025 season. The Cards are two weeks and one day away from their season opener against Denver at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

The expanded ACC this year cuts down on the number of non-conference opponents, but does help maximize the opportunities to get more conference wins. Louisville has never won more than three ACC matches in a season. The Cards will play nine ACC games this year.

Last season, Louisville had its best season of the Scott Teeter era, going 8-11 highlighted by an upset over ranked Clemson. They played eight ranked opponents during the regular season and added another in the ACC Tournament. The Cards also played two of the teams to make the Final Four including eventual national champion Boston College.

The ACC had six teams make the 28-team NCAA Tournament. Add in ACC newcomer Stanford and the ACC has seven teams in the conference this season to make the tournament last year.

Louisville lost its top three scorers to graduation- Kokoro Nakazawa, Nicole Perroni, and Kylea Dobson. The younger Nakazawa sister, Negai, Rian Adkins, Maggie McMahon, Tiffany Natoli, and Izzy Seikel all finished in double figure points (goals and assists combined) and return this season.

Sara Addeche and J Pleck split time in goal with the former seeing a majority of the minutes. Addeche graduated but Pleck returns for her senior season. She is joined by junior Aubrey Bagenstose, sophomore Hanna John, and newcomer Haley Richards. Neither Bagenstose and John played last season.

This year's squad is comprised of 11 freshmen, eight sophomores, eight juniors, eight seniors, and one graduate student. There are two local kids on the squad in graduate student Ashley Osborne (Ballard High School) and freshman Rosie Cobler (Sacred Heart Academy). The most common hometown on the roster is Columbus, Ohio, where three players all played at Upper Arlington High School.

This season features eight home games with all but one set for noon starts. Cardinal Couple plans to have in person coverage at many of the games this year.

Happy Thursday and Go Cards!

Lacrosse Advances in ACC Tourney with win over VT -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS GO TO ACC QUARTERS WITH 13-11 WIN AT VIRGINIA TECH

The ninth seeded Louisville Lacrosse squad advanced in the ACC Lax Tournament with a well fought and hard earned win over eighth seed host Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in front of a nationwide ACCN viewership

The Cards were led by Nicole Perroni's four goals in the match, The Cards now head to Charlotte to face #1 seed Syracuse on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

"Nicole was her steady self today." commented Cards head coach Scott Teeter. " She contributed all over the field and made some really big plays when we needed them."

Louisville jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter .led by two goals from Kokoro Nakazawa. A close ssecond quarter followed, the Cards losing the quarter 6-5 but taking a 9-8 lead into the halftime locker room . The Cards were never able to really pull away from the homestanding Hokies, but did hold an 11-9 lead after three quarters.

Virginia Tech narrowed the lead to 11-10 to start the fourth quarter ...but the Cards were not ready to fold like they did in the second half against Duke and Notre Dame in their last couple of regular season games.  Perroni picked up her final goal of the contest in the fourth and was followed in the scoring by Izzy Seikel, to make it 13-10 Cards, advantage. The Hokies did score late for the final of 13-11.

It was Scott Teeter's first career win in the ACC Lacrosse tournament.

The Cardinals head coach spoke about the win::

"The girls battled for 60 minutes today,They had a response for every one of their mistakes. They were all contributing and supporting each other...which gave us a really great team win"

The win improves the Cards record to 8-10 on the season, Virginia Tech finishes with a 9-9 mark. The win avenges a 14-10 Louisville loss to the Hokies at the L.L.S. during the regular season.

Kokoro and Negai Nakazawa seemed to have an enthusiastic, "never say die attifude" during early play that quickly spread to the rest of the team. Kokoro ended up with three goals on the day.. The Cards also got a couple of goals from a couple of players we didn't hear much about during the regular season...with Maggie McMahon and  Lauren Figas connecting twice. Also on the board for UofL was Paulie's favorite player...grad student Allegra Catalano and Izzy Seikel

The Cards had a 35-27 shot advantage over the home team and committed just eight turnovers, compared to 15 for Va Tech.

In other first day ACC LAX action, #7 seed Clemson took down visiting #10 seed Pitt 18-15

Syracuse will be next for the Cards.,The #1 seeded Orange and Cards will face off at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Charlotte. ACC Network will have the coverage. ..A nice win for Louisville on a higher seeded foe's home field, so in some circles, it is being called an upset..I'd just like to think of it a solid win that shows the Cards have improved since season end and hopefully, the trend will continue.

At the helm...

Scott Teeter is in his sixth year as head coach of the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team. He is 28-50 in five years at Louisville.

In his first season at Louisville in 2018, the Cardinals won five of their first six games before finishing the season with a 6-11 record.

Thoughts?

If you look at the number as they are, they don't immediately scream 'success' or 'improvement' right? But for this program you have to dig a little deeper. The Cardinals face some of the top national talent and have also put together some of the toughest schedules out there in recent history. So you need to give them some credit for that.

If you also look at Coach Teeter's entire coaching history, you'll see that he was able to take his previous school's program to regular undefeated conference records and to the NCAA tournament over a course of 14 year span. Teeter also inherited a tumultuous program here that needed a reboot. Id like to see what Teeter and the LAX program can put together next season.

SCOTT TEETER INTERVIEW -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

SCOTT TEETER INTERVIEW

I was able to catch up with Louisville head Lacrosse coach Scott Teeter Tuesday afternoon in his office and we were able to get in a great interview about Louisville Lacrosse so far this season.

It's almost always a great visit to the Kueber Center where the Lacrosse offices are, and, as a added bonus, I got to see my love...basketball's Cortnee Walton TWICE while there and also met (relatively) new lacrosse assistant coach Allison Daley for the first time...plus running into my favorite draw control champ of all time and assistant LAX coach Kaylin Morissette.

Yes, a great day to be vertical, indeed....for ol' Paulie.

Here's what Scott and I chatted about:

PAULIE: Your thoughts on the season so far?

SCOTT:: We've come out of the gates running and it hasn't been perfect lacrosse but we've been playing pretty well. Our first game our defense and goalkeeping carried us and our offense got us to the quick start vs Denver but couldn't score in the second half. The offense got it figured out in the next two games and those resulted in wins. Defense very solid against both Colorado and Lindenwood.

Now it's about putting it all together. With Sara (Addeche) in net. We're getting the lead to start each of our three contest, we just need to come out as strong to start the second halves.

PAULIE: Defense and playing the full 60 minutes are your things to do then...

SCOTT:  60 minutes is key. Our defense a bright spot. Sara credits the defense in front of her. We're making the saves that maybe we weren't last year. It's also been good to see our attack players get involved a little and not just our midfielders.

PAULIE:  You're #23 in the nation in one poll...#19 in another...going into Virginia. Is the attitude a "We've gone this Far, can we go a little further?"  feeling?

SCOTT:  Definitely. One of my old coaches taught me..."Don't get too high on your highs or too low on your lows". We downplay the national ranking a little bit, Now, it's an opportunity vs. Virginia whose in the top ten.

PAULIE: Let's talk Nicole Perroni.

SCOTT: She's hit her stride, had a huge summer and was ready to roll for her senior season. She brings confidence and leadership to our program. She's developed into that leadership role. She taken Negai Nakazawa under her wing on the field, letting her sister Kokoro handle all the off-field things and when it comes to Lacrosse Negai goes to Nicole.  Nicole is getting the other team's top defender and still producing, which is great.

PAULIE: Sara Addeche at goalkeeper. You had choices. What put her in the starting role?.

SCOTT: We didn't name a starter for a long time. Even in mid to late January, we hadn't named one. Sara ended up actually being the most healthy when we finally named a starter and she's taken it and ran with it. She's the first goalkeeper we have ever had .in the time I've been here, to be named ACC DEFENDER OF THE WEEK and she'll always the first one to credit the defensive line in front of her for the defense's successes. If there was ever any doubt, she's solidified her spot as our #1 goalkeeper right now.

PAULIE: A great thing to see is the roster at full strength with almost 40 players and if I'd mentioned "full strength" a couple of years ago to you, you would have rolled your eyes and slapped your palm up against the side of your face. Out of this current roster, 13 are freshmen and 12 are sophomores. That's a pretty amazing youth movement.

SCOTT: We're balanced and we have younger players that are competing. Sophomores like Tiffany Natoli, for example, starting and producing. A freshman like Negai Nakazawa. A player that could be our future. Rian Adkins, from Columbus, OH....already doing great things .A lot of upside. Her composure.  And defensively, we're able to rotate five or six girls in, so we can stay a little fresher as the game gets deeper.. It's building a program, not just a team. When great players graduate, we want to have experienced players ready to come in and become those next great players. .And getting up to the speed of the ACC is big, also.

PAULIE: That getting up to speed in the best lacrosse conference in DI has to be so very important, yet difficult...also, .

SCOTT: Very important, but they ALL have the opportunity to earn playing time. To succeed and learn how to earn success. When I took over, we were just trying to get 18-20 girls that were healthy to play.

It's good to have a full roster now, for sure.

PAULIE: The Nakazawa sisters. A great story on this team. How did you get involved with them and ultimately getting them both to campus from Japan?

SCOTT: Through my Canada connections. I had a guy on one of my Canadian All-Star rosters who knew a lot about scouting Japanese lacrosse. I went over to Japan several times. Kokoro was the first to impress me. And to see her develop, especially now that her little sister is here,  has been so wonderful. They'll joke around with me now and try to play tricks on me, before she'd walk around me on eggshells. Negai has made Kokoro better, her wanting to improve her skills to match Negai's.

PAULIE: Is there a third sister in the family?.

SCOTT: (laughing) There's not a third, but they did prank me by saying there was another sister, named Nicole. I caught on they were referring to Nicole Perroni

(Not a Nakazawa sister, biologically)

PAULIE: The lack of splits between playing conference and nonconference squads? Does it affect you?

SCOTT: You've got to do it, because of the length of the season and everyone wanting to play an ACC, in-conference opponent on the weekend. We have four games coming up in eight days now, and that's a lot. At Virginia Saturday, at Vanderbilt Monday, then home to play Cincinnati on Friday and finally Pitt on a Sunday, March 5th.

PAULIE: Final words for the Cardinals fanbase...a pep talk to get them out to matches?

SCOTT:  We're on the up and up...being nationally ranked and looking to stay there. We play in the ACC. That sells itself, right there. The University of Louisville's Athletic department sells itself. We have the only 'lacrosse only' facility in the ACC...Our support staff and network is tops. We have all the bells and whistles. We're in year six of the rebuild. Come out and be a part of it and join the great fans and spectators already out there.

(before the press box was built...)

I appreciate Scott taking the time to speak with me on Tuesday and look forward to LAX at Louisville rising to the top of the ACC. The dedication, backing and foundation is there. Join me in watching it grow.

(We hope you have enjoyed the Scott Teeter shots we have collected over the years and used in today's article.  Many are from the lenses of Jared Anderson).

Will defense be a bright spot this year for Louisville Lacrosse? -- WEDNSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LAX HAS ALLOWED JUST TEN GOALS AGAINST TWO TOP 25 TEAMS SO FAR THIS YEAR.

There is an old, tongue-in-cheek adage about the way to win athletic events. You either outscore your opponent or hold them to less points than you. If you need more of an explanation on this, I just don't know how much more I can help you...

The Louisville Lacrosse squad has come out and played shut-the-door defense in the squad's first two games this season -- allowing #9 Denver just five goals in a heart-breaking 5-4 loss, and limiting #24 Colorado to five goals in a resounding and convincing 12-5 win. The effort has moved Louisville into #24 in the IWLCA rankings. Does it make a statement about how good the Cards are defensively, or a statement about how over-rated a few of the west coast schools are this season?

One thing that points to an improved Cardinals defense is the play of Sara Addeche at goalkeeper.. She's recorded 21 saves in just two games this season and it's interesting to note that Denver came back after the low-scoring win over Louisville to put up 12 goals against Vanderbilt next time out.

A good defense doesn't begin and end with the goalkeeper, obviously, and the Cards have gotten some great defensive play from Maggie Foster, Sydney Kirchenheiter, Ava Coyle, and Olivia Toll.

Looking at the ACC some of the numbers for the Cards competition there reveal some interesting items. The cumulative conference record is 11-1 so far, with (you guessed it) Louisville recording the only loss. It's too early for a lacrosse top 25 to come out yet, but with ten ACC teams playing lacrosse now, one would have to put at least five schools, in my opinion in that top 25. USA Lacrosse puts six ACC schools in their top 20 (UNC, BC, Syracuse, Duke, Virginia and Notre Dame) and Louisville got consideration votes.

Ask Scott Teeter. He'll tell you that the defense (and Addeche) carried the Cards against Colorado and played excellently all game long against Denver.

On the offensive side of things, a vet (Nicole Perroni) and a sophomore (Izzy Seikel) are leading the way in scoring with four goals each. Other top efforts have also come from newcomer freshman Negal Nakazawa (Kokoro's younger sister), grad student Hannah Morris and sophomore Lauren Figas. It's good to see the younger players making a sizable impact on the team's fortunes. It shows, if anything, that the recruiting is having a favorable impact on the squad's abilities and now that the roster is at full, the number of impact players has the potential to become larger and larger

Yes, the conference still looks tough as ever and newcomer Clemson put up 23 goals in their most recent outing against Wofford.  while allowing just one.

Lindenwood comes to the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium Sunday for the WLAX Cards third match of the season. All they did last year was win DII women's lacrosse. They moved up to DI and they're 1-1 in DI this season, with a season opening loss to California 17-9 and a win over Central Michigan 17-15. We'll get more into then as the game gets closer.

Over the years, and especially in the Teeter rebuild years, we've seen a huge effort by Scott and his coaches to build trust, unity and a feeling of team and shared goals.  Things that were sorely needed when he came to town. He warned me back then that it wouldn't come overnight.  The thing is, the team has gotten better at it each year since he's been here. It's no small feat to accomplish all that in the best women's lacrosse conference in Division I. But, it's getting there. Going into the 2018 season, you had to wonder if the program could recover...but, recover it has and showing steady improvement..

In summing up the defense, it might be best to wait and see how the squad performs against the ACC schools before placing a lot of crowns on their heads. If Lax can hold traditional conference powerhouses like UNC, BC, Syracuse and Virginia to less than double digit scoring, let's go ahead and confirm the earlier observations....this Cardinals defense is pretty good.

Here at Cardinal Couple, we certainly hope the Cards defensive excellence can continue as the season goes on. Another old saying is that..."offense fills the seats but defense wins games". I've got a feeling the UofL women's lacrosse coaching staff just might agree with that so far this season, and it'll be fun to see how they've progressed in putting the ball in the net by the time they've reached the midseason mark.

Lacrosse Cards Look to Take Down Team USA -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

As we're fully into the summer slump now, the news gets more and more sparse. I'm filling in for Daryl today, and I've got the write again tomorrow, so no fair jumping on me about not emptying the coffers in today's column. Daryl should return next week, but, for now, enjoy a look at Cards playing outside of their season.

Team Canada Heads to World Championship Final

Ten representatives from the Louisville lacrosse program went to Maryland last week to begin their representation of their countries. All ten advanced to the knockout stage of the final sixteen teams, but only one of the five teams remains. The team in question is Canada, which is home to six of the ten Cards participating in the tournament. The Canadians, led by Scott Teeter on the bench and featuring Kay Morissette on the field, had to knock out Monica Negron of Puerto Rico and Anna Lottmann of the Czech Republic. Kokoro Nakazawa's Japan team was knocked out by the US in the quarter finals and Stephanie McNamara's Australian squad fell to the Yanks in the semis.

Canada, which is also represented by Allison Daley (assistant coach), Nicole Perroni, Hannah Morris, and Brenna Shanahan, defeated England 11-9 in their semifinal yesterday to advance to the rematch with the US. Kay Morissette had eight draw controls alone, matching the entire total for England. Team Canada and Team USA played each other to open the tournament in a game in which the US took victory 16-11. Team USA is chasing their fourth consecutive title as they will play in their 11th straight gold medal match. In addition to a rematch of the opener, this is also the third straight gold medal match to feature this matchup. Scott Teeter and company will look to finish the job tomorrow at Noon. The Lacrosse World Championship site gives conflicting reports for the television viewing, so be sure to check both ESPN2 and ESPNU around that time to find the game.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Lax Bows Out of ACC Tournament -- Student-Athlete Mental Health -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Lacrosse Bows Out of ACC Tournament

A season full of 'what ifs' came to a frustrating close yesterday for Louisville lacrosse. The Cards fell in the opening round of the ACC Tournament to Pitt, 13-10.

After allowing the Panthers to score the first two goals of the match, Nicole Perroni went on a 3-0 run by herself to give the Cards a one-goal advantage before Pitt evened the score to close out the first quarter.

The second quarter was rough. Louisville's offense failed to score the enter period while the defense struggled and allowed four goals.

A trio of Cards found the back of the net in the third quarter while only allowing two goals to cut their deficit to 9-6.

A Perroni goal cut the score to 10-7 and a Caroline Blalock score made it 11-8, but Louisville wouldn't come within three until the final couple of minutes and ran out of time for a rally.

Perroni recorded a career-high five goals on the day. Caroline Blalock concluded her collegiate career with two goals. Allegra Catalano also scored two goals and Kylea Dobson added one.

J Pleck saw action in goal the entire match. She recorded seven saves to go along with 13 goals allowed.

For Louisville, a 7-11 season fell short of expectations. The Cards had four losses come by a one-goal deficit and lost a match by three goals and four goals each.

Scott Teeter's squad loses both Sarah Blalock and Caroline Blalock to graduation. Paige Richbourg, Hannah Morris, and Kirsten Parker are all listed as seniors, but all three still have the COVID-19 year of eligibility if they choose to elect to come back.

Student-Athlete Mental Health

One of the least talked about aspects of the life of a student-athlete is probably the darkest part- mental health. In the last few days, two schools have had to break the news of the loss of one of their student-athletes.

JMU softball player Lauren Bernett passed away a day after being named Conference Player of the Week. Wisconsin track star Sarah Schulze passed away on April 13. Both deaths were named as suicide for the cause of death.

Both deaths join a pair of other suicides since the beginning of March. Stanford women's soccer goalkeeper Katie Meyer passed away March 1. SUNY Binghamton University men's lacrosse goalie Robert Martin passed away on April 1.

Over the course of nine years from 2003-2012, the NCAA held a study through several doctors to follow the suicide rate among student-athletes. The original intent was to see if certain genders or sports had a higher suicide rate.

In the study, over 3,773,309 individual student-athletes were included. Of that, there were 477 deaths with 35 labeled as suicide. As anticipated, accidents and physical health related issues made up a majority of the 477 deaths.

The conclusion from the study was that the suicide rate in NCAA student-athletes was lower than that of a normal college student or the general public.

However, things change over time. And things have gotten worse. Another study by the NCAA early in the COVID-19 pandemic saw numbers get worse. One of the biggest results of the study was that the rates of reported mental health concerns was 1.5-2.0 times higher than that of pre-COVID-19 studies. As opposed to previous student, women athletes had more mental health concerns than men's athletes.

I know this isn't joyful or exciting, but it's something that needs to be addressed and talked about much more around the country. Student-athletes have to balance daily life, school, and sports, which for a young person still developing in their early career, can be overwhelming and draining. The increased pressure with expectations of performance on the field/court has only added fuel to the fire.

I'm not expert on the topic, but seeing signs of mental health related issues even of student-athletes at UofL is concerning.

Some might remember the passing of UofL cheerleader Dani Cogswell back during the summer of 2014. Her cause of death was due to a drug overdose with multiple drugs found in her system. Some of those drugs, although illegal, were considered to help with mental health issues such as anxiety.

There's many steps that need to be taken by both the NCAA and each school to help address the issue. One of those is providing resources to the student-athletes.

On A Lighter Note

To end on a lighter note, we will release the answer to the two women student-athletes that I had the pleasure of working with earlier this week. There were some great guesses but no one guessed correctly.

In the white shirt is Abby Baldridge of women's soccer. In the grey shirt is Paige Morningstar of volleyball. The two are roommates and have become good friends in their first year at Louisville. They wanted to get some photos together and I was happy to oblige.

One of the cool things about working with student-athletes outside of their sport is getting a chance to know them better and get their personalities. They are able to showcase their sense of fashion and relax more with it being a low pressure situation.

Both young women were a blast to work with!

Cards Bounce Back Against Niagara -- Liz Dixon Grad Photos -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Lacrosse Bounces Back with Win at Niagara

Louisville Lacrosse broke their two-game losing streak with a 19-10 win at Niagara yesterday. The Cards improve to 7-9 on the season.

The Purple Eagles came out ready to play, scoring less than two minutes into the match and played Louisville to a 3-3 first quarter. Niagara would also score two of the first three goals in the second quarter for a one-goal advantage.

Louisville, historically known for big runs, proceeded to go on a 9-0 run over the back half of the second quarter and first portion of the third quarter for a comfortable eight-goal lead.

Niagara would cut the lead to five to close out the third quarter, but a 6-2 run over the final period allowed the Cards to cruise to a nine-goal lead and blowout win.

Caroline Blalock completed a hat trick early in the second quarter and would have five goals by halftime. The super-senior would complete a double hat trick in the third quarter and ended the match with a single game career-high seven goals.

Nicole Perroni posted a four-goal performance, including three straight of her own spanning over the final minutes of the first half and early second half. Her fourth and final goal came early in the final period.

Louisville's leading scorer Hannah Morris scored two goals while six Cards contributed one goal apiece.

The split goalkeeper philosophy continued today. Sara Addeche got the start and surrendered give goals along with one save over 21:53. J Pleck would come in relief to allow five goals in addition to six saves. The two have nearly identical playing time on the year with the latter having a better save percentage and more saves.

Scott Teeter's squad returns home this Saturday to close out the regular season. Louisville and Notre Dame will square off on the Cards' senior day at Cardinal Stadium at noon. Admission is free at Cardinal Stadium for this match. A win would give UofL two conference wins and tie them for fifth (out of nine teams) in the ACC, pending no other teams earn a third conference win.

Liz Dixon Grad Photos

My Friday did not end following Louisville softball's run-rule victory over Syracuse in their series opener. My next stop was with Liz Dixon to take her graduation photos for her.

Although, Dixon is graduating, she will still be returning for one more season with the Cards and will take a few extra classes while focusing primarily on basketball and winning a national championship.

During our tour around downtown and campus, we ended up inside the Kueber Center, where the four ACC Championship and four NCAA Final Four trophies were sitting out. I picked up the 2022 Final Four trophy to use for the photos and made a comment on how heavy it was. Liz, with her quick witted sense of humor replied with "That's why we lift weights."

Here's a few of her grad photos:

On a side note, good luck to Louisville baseball as they take on their blue buddies down I-64 tonight at Jim Patterson Stadium. Tickets range from $5-$200.
