Saturday Cardinal Couple - .500 for the day

Field Hockey

Field Hockey is wrapping up their season this weekend and needs to win out to preserve their RPI standings to get into the NCAA tournament.

Michigan State came to visit Trager stadium and UofL got the job done. Nicole Woods, who is playing like she's on a mission, got The Cards on the board early about five and a half minutes into the game, her eighth goal of the season. The Spartans responded about five minutes later to get their only score of the game.

UofL picked up another two goals before the half, one at 20 minutes into the game, where Tess Hannah got her fifth goal of the season with assists to Megan Anstotz, and Erin McCrudden. McCrudden got her third goal of the season with only two and a half minutes left in the half. The Cards took a 3-1 lead into the break.

In the second half, Vic Stratton got her fourth goal of the season with assists to Katherine Gwynne-Wood and Megan Anstotz. Vic, as a defender, usually only scores on penalty corners, with this one being no exception. The Cards finished scoring with a fifth goal on another corner with Katherine Gwynne-Wood getting it into the cage with an assist to Chili Garcia with only 10 minutes left in the game.

Field Hockey finishes out their season, with Senior Day this Sunday against Rutgers at noon.

Volleyball

Volleyball took their first ACC loss to UNC in Chapel Hill 3-1. They came out playing solidly, against once of the best blocking teams in the country, and took the first set 25-18, but then the wheels fell off with set scores 11-25, 22-25, 22-25.

The UNC blocking started to take it's toll with the Cards racking up lots of hitting errors in the rest of the sets. The second set brought eight hitting errors, which cooled the Card's hitting from the first set's .326 down to -.069. The third set brought more of the same, with nine hitting errors, and .111 hitting percentage. The fourth set also had a number of hitting errors for UofL, but the hitting percentage went up slightly to .133, but the slight climb was more than offset by seven service errors.

The Cards were led by Erin Fairs with 14 kills and seven digs, Janelle Jenkins probably had the best all-around match with 13 kills and 19 digs. Multi-Freshman-of-the-Week Aniah Philo got 10 kills, but narrowly missed out on another double-double with 8 digs.

UNC showed why they are among the best blocking teams in the country with 11 blocks. UofL did fairly well at the net, particularly as undersized as they are as a team, with five blocks.

Volleyball looks to get back to the winning ways at NC State on Sunday with a 2 PM first serve.
