Time to dance -- Saturday Cardinal Couple

CARDS FACE BYU TODAY AT 4

Clear the chairs and tables from the floor, put on the slick soled shoes and strike up the band. Hopefully it's Robbie Bartlett's group on stage. The Cards are ready for their first round game in the NCAA WBB Tournament and the sunny shores of Tampa Bay serves as the venue for today's game. Time to dance, amigos!

Louisville (25-6 ) and the #8 team in the nation prepares for a tough first round match against BYU (23-9) and winners of the WCC Tournament. They were a #5 seed in the West Coast matchup and downed San Francisco 76-65 to grab the crown. They've won four of their last five and have the WCC Player of the year in Morgan Bailey. She averaged 17.3 ppg and grabbed 10.5 boards a game.

LEXI EATON
Backing her up is the WCC Tournament MVP Lexi Eaton, who leads the Cougars in scoring with 20.7 ppg. Kylie Maeda will see to getting them the orb, she leads BYU with 136 assists on the season.

Veteran coach Jeff Judkins (305-142) led the Cougs to a 12-6 WCC record and his squad averages 68.6 ppg and the Cougs shoot it well with 43% marksmanship.

MORGAN BAILEY
The Cards need to go out today and simply play Louisville basketball. Create and score inside. Put stifling defense on the scoring duo of Bailey and Eaton. Shake off the possible first time NCAA appearances for Myisha Hines-Allen and Mariya Moore early.

Sara Hammond will need to continue the excellent full court performances we've seen lately and Shawnta Dyer and Emmonnie Henderson contribute significant bench minutes. Jude's hand will hopefully not be a factor in this game,,,if it is, Arica Carter needs to be ready to go. Bria Smith needs to show up.

Should be a fun one to watch. ESPN 2 is rolling out Bob Picozzi and Brooke Weisbrod for the call...two of their best in women's hoops coverage and Matt and AJ will handle the radio feed on WKRD 790.

We'll break it down on today's broadcast of CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO today at 11 a.m. Go Cards!

DAY ONE OF ACTION PRODUCES UPSETS AND HEARTBREAK

Sixteen teams have punched their tickets for round two in a first day of Tournament action that provided a few upsets and a few heartbreaking moments. How about Gonzaga and a win over #5 George Washington? The #11 Zags always play well, it seems, in the Big Dance and this one wasn't that big of a surprise to me. We loved Doug Bruno's DePaul squad as a under-ranked #9 seed and they delivered against Minnesota.

ACC member and #11 seed Miami got it done against Washington...we knew how tough the 'Canes were and this one didn't shock us too much. Chalk up a win for the "Q" as his Orange girls won a thriller against Nebraska. The dance continues for first year coach Jimmy Dykes and #10 Arkansas with a downing of Northwestern.

Those that are good mostly showed it yesterday as well. Kentucky decimated Tenn. St. Notre Dame demolished Montana and South Carolina romped Savannah St. Baylor had no trouble with Northwestern State.

Duke narrowly avoided a #4 vs. #13 upset by Albany thanks to a "3" by Rebecca Greenwell. California, Dayton, Mississippi State, Oregon State, Iowa all also won as the higher seeds.

Heartbreak for WKU against Texas...the Toppers leading most of the way before a late Longhorn run sent them to the sidelines. A unchallenged but missed three to win it for WKU with 4 seconds left. Some questioned the shot, they just needed a "two" to tie it...but WKU had made 12 threes in the game and the call was a sound one. Michelle Clark-Heard did a masterful job with the Hilltoppers this year.

The conferences that did well yesterday were the ACC with four wins in four games. (Miami, Notre Dame, Duke and Syracuse) and the SEC with four wins (Kentucky, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Arkansas). The losers were the Big 10 (1-2) and C-USA (0-2).

Sixteen more stories unfold today...

Congratulations to Louisville women's swimmer Kelsi Worrell for winning the NCAA Championship in the 100-Butterfly. Her 49.81 is the first time a woman has ever done the event in under 50 seconds. Best in the world!!! CARDS!!

The Cards are in sixth place in the NCAA Championships.

Louisville's 200-medley relay (Worrell, Tanja Kylliainen, Andrea Cottrell and Andrea Kneppers) finished second with a 1:35.75 to California's 1:35.15.

  1. "For recreational purposes only" - Cards favored by 14 1/2.

That sounds like a lot to me but I'm glad that the "experts" think Cards are that much better than BYU.

Like Paulie said, just play Louisville basketball.
