Louisville to face UNC in ACC Tournament Quarterfinals--Friday Cardinal Couple

CARDS OPEN ACC TOURNAMENT PLAY TONIGHT

Sylvia Hatchell, the longstanding UNC coach, said she'd like another shot at Louisville when she addressed the media in the postgame after the Cards defeated North Carolina 75-56 on Feb. 15th in the KFC YUM! Center.

She gets her wish.

UNC pulled away from a dogged and determined Georgia Tech team last night to advance to the 8 p.m. (or so) quarterfinal round in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, NC.

In a day of upsets...where Virginia Tech and Wake Forest advanced...sending Syracuse and Pittsburgh home...the TarHeels got a scare when Alisha Gray crumpled to the floor in the contest...clutching her ankle. She did return to play after heading to the locker room.

The Cards will look to rebound (literally) after falling to Virginia to end the regular season. The Wahoos are headed home also...falling to Miami 62-52 yesterday.

Headed to the airport...
One has to wonder about the effectiveness of getting the bye so far in the ACC Tournament. Two of the three 'single bye' schools are waiting now to see where (Syracuse) or if (Pittsburgh) they will get an NCAA bid.

Virginia is on that waiting list also.

Let's hope the Cards aren't catching an early flight back to Louisville as well.

Today's action:

Wake Forest vs Duke    11 a.m.
Miami vs Notre Dame     2 p.m.
Va. Tech vs Fla. State   6 p.m.
North Carolina vs Lou    8 p.m.

I had another rough day picking the winners yesterday. Syracuse and Virginia failed me.  I'm going "chalk" today and picking the top four seeds to advance to the semifinals...Duke, Notre Dame, Fla. State and Louisville.

The Cards look to have the toughest test of the four games today. The crowd will be solidly behind the Tar Heels and Sylvia's squad looked impressive in finally pulling away from Ga. Tech yesterday. Stephanie Mavunga will pose problems inside for the Cards. Alisha Gray's ankle could be an issue.

Nevertheless, I think Louisville survives to fight another day. Sing it with me, one time...Sweet Caroline...ba, ba, ba...Good times never seemed so good...

Louisville Softball has been cancelled for Friday because of the massive snowstorm that hit our area Wednesday night and Thursday morning. They'll look at it later today and see if they can get in Saturday action in the planned Louisville classic.

The Cards have had there share of winter woes to start the 2014-15 season...the EKU Tournament was also cancelled because of inclement weather. Another reason why Ulmer needs to become a domed facility.

  2. I support making Ulmer a domed facility with bathrooms and concessions on site - not next door.

    1. It's a longstanding joke I've had with Sandy Pearsall and Asst. SID Lori Korte. I suggested we postpone the dome when Alija Wolny was playing...for fear she'd punch holes in the roof with her high altitude, long range blasts from the plate.

Now, based on the recent weather, I am solidly in the "Let's Put A Dome Over Ulmer" movement. Please let UofL President James Ramsey (not John Ramsey) and Tom Jurich know you're with us.

    2. Ha. Ha. Paulie. That'll happen at the same time you and Worldwide are named the broadcast crew of Louisville Softball. Cats squeaked by Vandy last night. Finally seeing just how mediocre the ACC is with all the upsets happening. Enjoying the atmosphere here in the Verizon Center in Little Rock. GO BIG BLUE!

      Matthew Mitchell for Governor.

    3. LOL GOV...Miss St. comin' to get ya tonight. Drive safely when you depart Saturday morning. As for broadcasting, Worldwide and I feel we would acheive never-before levels if given the chance to broadcast softball (or lacrosse) games. We're not sure in which direction the levels would go...but I can promise you two things.

      1) It would never be boring.
      2) We'll never get asked to do broadcasts.

  3. How the ACC could leave Faith Randolph off the First Team ACC squad is beyond me. She's the second best guard in the conference behind Jewell Loyd.

Glad to Mariya Moore on the second team and All-Freshman team but think Myisha Hines-Allen deserved a slot on that All-Freshman squad.

    Curtis Franklin.

  4. I agree about MHA, however, her late season slump has not helped her cause any.
We need her to find her groove again. It is especially difficult when Hammond is playing off (as well as Bria). 3 of the above mentioned 4 need to make their presence felt this post season or it will be a very short post season.

  5. Walz has had 5 days to prepare. We should be ready to go.

  6. I thought Hatchell was far less than gracious after our win at the Yum. I'm liking our chances to take another one from them today. I've been thinking that our seniors are due for some break out tourney performances and I'm predicting at least one makes it happen today.

    Go Cards!

    1. Hope you're right on the senior break-out. Mavunga is a force inside and is playing her best ball of the season.

    2. Mavunga can play. Other than Bria's triple double we haven't really had an eye opening performance by any of our seniors so far. I'm guessing they're now clearly seeing that the end of their CBB careers is on the horizon. Hope that helps create that sense of urgency that makes our Cards such a great March program.

This should be a great game.
