Lacrosse sails past Vandy...Softball batters Buckeye twice...-Thursday Cardinal Couple

MORISSETTE, DALEY DELIVER IN LAX WIN

(Notes scribbled on the back of a John Calipari poster as Louisville is under attack and engulfed in a sea of Blue for the next 3 days and I am in hiding.)

Cancel the APB for the Louisville LAX squad. They have returned to the scene of the crime and held court for the final 30 minutes in Louisville's 16-9 win over Vanderbilt yesterday afternoon at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

Commodores, we sunk your battleship.

Kaylin Morissette and Cortnee Daley (who will be referred to as "Kay and Day" from here on) scored five times each as the Cards regrouped from a close 8-7 first half to outscore the 'Dores 8-2 in the win.

Louisville found themselves down early...trailing 3-1 after 12 minutes into the action. Trailing 4-2, the Cards got goals from Kay and Hannah Kolowski (Kay and HK, maybe?) within nine seconds of each other to tie it up but the Nashville invaders answered with two straight to regain the lead.

Louisville trailed 7-6 with five to go in the half but Kay and Faye (Brust) found the net to send the Cards into the locker room up by one.

Whatever Kellie Young said at halftime worked. We doubt the team was going over their NCAA Selection Brackets with her or setting up UK hospitality tents.

Coach speak:

"We started playing like Louisville in the second half. Our defense really hunkered down. I don't know who that was playing in the first half but we really cleaned that up in the second half."

(Coach gets five bonus points for using "hunkered down" in a post game interview. The phrase isn't used nearly enough.)

"Day" got busy to start the final half with two unassisted scores and after a VU score Kay and Day went back-to-back to set the numbers on the scoreboard Louisville 12 - Vandy 8. The Cards were shuffling the 'Dores defense around and making stops defensively as well.

After a Vandy final score to make it 12-9 with 18 minutes to play, Louisville added to the lead with net-finders by Heidi Smith, Kay twice and HK. The Cards finished with a 35-18 shot advantage and won the draw controls 19-8...Kay getting 13 of them.

Louisville (6-2) returns to action Sunday with a trip to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech. Hunker down, Cards!

SOFTBALL SLUGS BY BUCKEYES TO TAKE TWO

Sandy Pearsall's Hit and Pitch Cards travelled to the capital of Ohio for two against Brutus Buckeye and shelled the hosts 9-7 and 14-4.

Down three in the top of the seventh in the first one? No problem...the Cards posted five runs to take the 9-7 lead. The first game on the Ohio State softball field was a see-saw affair where OSU lead 2-0 early on a two-run fence clearer. The Cards had the bases full in the top of the second but couldn't fly home.

After OSU stretched the lead to 3-0, Louisville tied it in the bottom of the third and eventually went up 4-3 in the sixth inning when Maryssa Becker's single scored Jordan McNary.

OSU responded with four runs in the top of the seventh and the Cards were left with just one chance to counter. They did pull off the miracle with a hitting barrage against the Buckeyes.

Brittany Sims singled to start it off and scored on a one-out single by Kayla Soles. Tiarra Sanabria reached on a fielders choice and went home on Alison "Mike" Szydlowski's triple off the center field fence (which was an inch shy of leaving the park) and it was suddenly 7-6.

OSU intentionally walked hot-hitting Kelsi Jones but the strategy backfired when Nicole Puhafl doubled to tie the game. That set the stage for Maryssa Becker's two RBI double which put Louisville up to stay at 9-7.

Game two was a rout. After posted a run in the first inning, the Cards unloaded for seven in the second...highlighted by a Pufahl three-RBI blast...to lead 8-0.

Pearsall's Punishers stretched that out to 13-0 in the fourth inning...the big blast coming with two outs when Pufahl singled and rode the wave on Brittany Sims' fourth "Goodbye Mr. Spalding" of the year.

Becker's no-hitter was broken up by OSU in the bottom of the fourth but the Cards rolled on to a 14-4 win in five innings. Becker got credited for the wins in both games and is now 6-1 on the season. The Cards are 15-7 and travel to Oxford, OH today for a batting session against Miami (OH).

If you need assistance in bracket selection, Swish Appeal does a good job in breaking down the team and matchups. They also gave a shout-out to Cardinal Couple yesterday as the best place to go to on-line to check out UofL women's sports. They refer to us as a "merry band of miscreants".

I'm gonna "google" miscreants and see what it means...but thanks for the props, Swish Appeal. You're OK in our book...

  1. So...miscreants are lawbreakers...hmmm...so a band of miscreants that is breaking the law.

Judas Priest song. Breaking The Law. It may have to be the new theme song to open the CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR.

Miscreant band...Miss Korea band...whatever. And, who's our lead singer? Rob Halford? Me? Who does the shredding guitar solo? Worldwide? Gary Witherspoon?

Lastly, will we be bigger than the Beatles? OK, to the studio to record our first cut. Good thing Worldwide has studio connections...

    1. Hey Gov...do us all a favor...put down the doobie, back away from the keyboard, eat some brownies and take a nap. Maybe when you wake up some reality might have set in.

The only thing that will happen if the kittens somehow end up taking on UConn is you will have managed to make it to double digits in losses this season. Nice Job.

  3. I see Cards getting past BYU by 6 or less and falling to LSU or S Florida. Reaching the sweet sixteen would be a nice accomplishment for this team

    1. I don't get why folks think there is something magical about USF. They didn't beat a ranked team all year and they played in the AAC, a conference that we're all familiar with. They lost three times to UConn at an average of 26 points a pop. Maybe they're the flavor of the month with the tourney commentators but other than them playing at home I don't see what they have going for them.

At least LSU beat UK and TAM in the last half of the season. In my mind they're more dangerous than USF by a long shot.

I predict the we take BYU down relatively comfortably, LSU takes USF down and we take LSU down on the neutral court. Boom.

  4. I see where the games are promoted by ESPN as being shown on whip around coverage. Does anyone know how to be able to watch the entire Louisville / BYU game (using streaming / cards TV...) without being cut away to check out others?

    1. Looks like all the games will be on ESPN3 - so at worst you can watch the entire Cards game on a laptop or tablet - for free.
