Dangerous Dayton next for WBB...Softball faces IU tonight...Lacrosse on road -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

#7 seed Flyers next for UofL WBB

When the NCAA Tournament Brackets were first released, Cardinal fans looked at the possibility of Louisville getting a rematch against in-state rival Kentucky in Albany, NY.

Not so fast, my fellow contestants and readers.

Just about every bracket entry we got here at Cardinal Couple indicated that UofL vs. UK would be the Sweet Sixteen matchup to determine who would face UConn (who everyone had advancing). Congratulations to "Slim" and "The other way of stopping" who had the foresight or coin-flip to send Dayton to Albany. Neither entry is doing very well in the contest, by the way.

The Dayton Flyers played the role of David in slaying Goliath (UK) in Memorial Barnyard in a track meet. 99-94.

It's almost if both teams met in the hallway before the game and agreed that first one to 100 wins. Defense pretty much an after-thought in this one.

The upstart Flyers defeated Iowa St. in their first game of the tournament. They threw a stiff breeze against the Cyclones 78-66 with four in double figures.

TURN THE "L" AROUND, JIM...
The names you need to know? Ally Malott, Andrea Hoover, Kelly Austria and Amber Deane. They run, they score and they have knocked off two major conferences en route to being the only A-10 school to reach round three.

Head coach Jim Jabir. He could pass for a young Henry Kissinger (Google it if you're under 40). Sonja says he looks like Steve Carrell's older brother. He gives the courtside appearance and manner of a man who has no idea what to do next if you watch him on the sidelines. He must be doing something right...he sent the Cats to spring break.

We'll break this one down further as we get closer to the Saturday 2:30 p.m. game. I'll suggest today's topic for discussion in the comments section. Is there any possible way and, if so, how do they beat Louisville?

Louisville Lacrosse takes their 7-2 record to Farmville, VA to face 2-7 Longwood today at 1 p.m.

I'm pretty sure that you can't download the app and play along...but I'm not much of a gamer...

Instead of harvesting grapes and corn, Kellie Young's LAX tribe will concentrate on putting yellow balls into a net.

It's the second of four on the road for UofL and could be a good test to see how deep Young can go into this year's roster and still get a convincing win.

Softball hosts IU for a single game tonight at Ulmer Stadium. Chilly temps will greet the contestants for the 6 p.m. contest.

Louisville is tied with Florida State atop the ACC standings and will return to conference play Saturday with a trip to Syracuse.

In the meantime, a battle with IU. This series has become somewhat of a rivalry over the past several years and might be a chance for Sandy Pearsall to do a little lineup shuffling and see what some of the lesser used Cards can do on the diamond and at the plate.

  1. I was proud of Jeff and the team when he said that he doesn't need to pay too much attention to the activities of his players outside of scheduled team events.

I am paraphrasing but he indicated that they are such a cohesive unit that he is comfortable with their taking care of each other and their activities without his supervision.

    1. These seniors are teaching the underclasswomen correctly. They are a tight knit bond and want to return to the Final Four. After Walz came down on Bria, she responded and is playing some of the best hoops of her career.

  2. Lipservice, IMHO, to put out a statement in lieu of what happened at UK and with Bishop. Good lipservice, mind you. Coaches have enough to do in preparing for games, practice, individual drills, recruiting and making sure academics are in place. Not having to play Inspector Clouseau after hours constantly does allow time for more important stuff...like devising strategies to win games.

    1. Exactly, Paulie. A senior should have enough responsibility at that stage of her career to do the right thing. She hurt her team. If memory serves correctly, Bishop was also one of the seniors that went to Mitchell and asked him to be stricter on them and the new players.

She violated the team trust and the request that she and the seniors asked for. Did the punishment fit the crime? Good question.

Go. Cards. Beat. Purdue. Old timers will get this phrase.

  3. How does Dayton beat UofL? They have to stop the Cards inside game. They have to shut down what Jude does. They need a big night from beyond the arc. They need to hope that Louisville gets off to a sluggish, Florida State type start.

Will any of this happen? No. Cards by 15+

  4. Dayton had 24 turnovers against UK and still won. They hit 11 three-pointers. They'll need to decrease the turnovers and increase the threes made if they hope to upset Louisville.

I just don't see that happening for the Flyers. They made a nice run as the seven seed. They won in the most exciting game of this year's Tournament. I am not going to predict that Louisville has this one sewn up. Upsets happen and Dayton is one of this year's Cinderellas. I like Louisville's chances, though.

BTW, sidelined Card Sydney Brackemyer had Dayton in her final list of schools she was considering.

  5. Henry Kissinger? Steve Carrell's brother? What kind of website is this. A parody of women's basketball?

Your Cardinals will be the next to fall to the Flyers. Just another stop on the way to pulling off the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA womens tourney. UD will face and beat Connecticut.

How does Dayton beat UofL. Incorrect booking that causes a forfeit. The Flyers arrive in New Albany and wait paitently outside the high school gym for a game that hnever happens. They do discover Huber's though and at least have a decent meal.

    4. LOL Big ED. You got that a little bit backwards but I love the Huber's reference. I'm sure the Starlight, IN folks would roll out the red carpet and open the winery if they got wind that Henry Kissinger was planning a visit. Was up there a few weeks ago. Still good after all these years and the All You Can Eat is a gastronomic feast. I also endorse the winery on the grounds. Sonja a big fan of their fruit wines.

That'll be $50...Huber's... for product and facility endorsement.

  7. IU Softball is 10-22 this season and comes into the game after losing 2 of 3 to Rutgers. They also lost last week to UK. IU did beat UofL last year 8-2 in Bloomington. Come out to Softball tonight!

  8. Two great Henry Kissinger quotes.

No one will ever win the battle of the sexes. There is too much fraternizing with the opponent.

  9. Dayton lost to Washington St., Iowa and Gonzaga in non-conference play. George Washington beat them twice in conference play and once in the A10 Tournament.

Dayton will have to find a way to score on Louisville's tough defense. They will have to also find a way to stop the Louisville team from scoring inside. The Cards have too many weapons they can throw against Dayton in the paint. Jude and Bria will have a field day in steals.

    1. TELL THEM Go UD Go! Paulie and his merry band of miscreants are overlooking the trees while examining their potential matchup against UCrown. The fact that Dayton beat the best team in the state...the Kentucky Wildcats should serve as notice that UD is no joke and no walkover. I do think it will be a close game and maybe lower scoring than our game against you. I hope that Mugger Mariya Moore lays off your players. With all that said, you'll have an easier time against Where's Waldo's bunch than you did against UK.

I would love to see it, but I don't think you can beat Geno and UCrown. Still, a Great Eight trip for your Flyers is a magnificent accomplishment. If we were to play you five times, we'd win the next four.

    2. Dear Go (th)UD Go:

I assure you Coach Walz and his team have a healthy respect for your Floaters....oops...Flyers. When our "mad scientest" has five days to prepare for an upcoming opponent...it usually goes very badly for the opponent. You are to be complimented on your fine season. Maybe it's a good thing you are facing the Cards instead of George Washington. Despite that, I do feel the Cards have better athleticism, have faced a tougher schedule, have a wealth of tournament experience on their squad and a coach that has done quite well in the NCAA Tournament. All these factors lead me to the decision that the Cards will advance to the Elite Eight.

Of course, you defeated Kentucky. Something UofL was unable to do. We had to play them with two additional players that they had available (Thompson and Bishop) that did not face you.

    3. What matters is which team is peaking and playing best together right now. Dayton can shoot and we can play good defense. Looks like both teams are playing great at the right time. Should be a tight game.

      peaking is overrated

      good wins

ask princeton about that were they peaking? yeah. did they advance. no. good beat them. maryland is good

    5. Go UD Go, it should be a good game and no matter what Mattie says, U of L will not overlook the Flyers. That will not bode well for your team.

Hey Mattie, Mariya made a couple of bad mistakes, she's young it happens. UK's thug O'Neill plays dirty every game all game long. Only gets open down the lane by throwing elbows.

What kind of cheese do you like? You need something to go with your "whine". Enjoy that December win, it's all you got.

  13. "For recreational purposes only"....Cardinals are favored by 5 points.

That is the smallest point spread of all eight games. Other favorites range from UConn (28 1/2) to Florida State (6 1/2).
