Saturday Cardinal Couple -- Sports galore for Friday and Saturday

SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Fellerhoff and Shine playing fine!

-Field Hockey falls to ODU by two in BIG EAST semis

-Volleyball falters, rallies against Houston

-Louisville WBB takes floor tonght vs. Loyola-Chicago

The University of Louisville doubles pair of Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine advanced to the finals of the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The Louisville pair beat Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase of Georgia 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 for the right to play for the doubles national championship.
"These girls are amazing!" said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "They are playing like this is just another tournament. They are not nervous at all. The programs they are playing are legacy programs with multiple national championships. For these two girls to develop into the best players in the country, shows a lot about their character and their dedication to the program. They will be playhing for the first national championship of the program."Fellerhoff and Shine will face Megan Kure and Kendal Woodard of Georgia Tech for the National Championship at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.

Sophomore guard Starr Breedlove isn't expected to play tonight against Loyola-Chicago because of a concussion suffered in practice earlier this week...per her tweet.

WE GOT BALLS, STICKS AND RACQUET'S !!

FELLERHOFF AND SHINE PLAY THIS MORNING AFTER ADVANCING TO SEMIS YESTERDAY

Louisville women's tennis' dynamite doubles duo Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine took another impressive victory Friday at the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

This time, the victims of the fury were Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky of the University of Michigan. These Wolverines had no boots in as 8-1 loss to F&S Inc.

Women's Tennis coach Mark Beckham was pleased:

"Becca and Julia played really well today. The thing that is encouraging is they are playing better each match they play," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. " It is very similar to what they did at regionals. They never let Michigan get comfortable and were able to control the match. That is not easy to do because this Michigan team was hot as well. It just shows the level that Becca and Julia are playing at right now. Thoardey have got another win under their belts. "

An early call this morning for the Cards...they'll face Lauren Henning and Maho Kowase ( University of Georgia) at 9 a.m.

FINAL FIVE MINUTES FOIL FLOCK AGAINST FOE

After a scoreless first half in frigid Storrs, CT...the Louisville Field Hockey squad had managed to do what no one had done in ODU's last ten outings...keep them scoreless. That luck didn't hold in the final 35 minutes of play, though...as Old Dominion scored twice on the Cards to advance to the BIG EAST Field Hockey Finals.

The Cards did have a 2-1 shots on goal advantage in the first half but ended up getting only goose eggs on the scoreboard against a Monarchs team that has won their last 12 in a row.

Louisville did hold ODU scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the second half but the Cards eventually fell prey to the ODU attack and allowed an additional goal as well when they pulled goalie Sydney King late to add an extra attack player and ODU scored an unassisted goal late in the contest...which ruined any comeback hopes for Louisville.

I've never been a fan of the pulling the goalie to create more offense. It's like leaving the back door open because you're trying to take packages to the car out the front door.

The Cards await their fate for further post season play when the NCAA announces the tournament pairings on Sunday, Nov. 10th. at 10 p.m.

Louisville's 15-5 body of work should be good enough to get them in the dance...or maybe a play-in-game. This year, there will be play-in-games to reach the 16 team tournament. Before yesterday's loss, the Cards were ranked 15th. Temple lost to UConn yesterday in the other semi-final match...

The No. 7 University of Connecticut field hockey team got an early goal just 6:44 into the game from senior Anne Jeute and never looked back, defeating No. 19 Temple, 3-0, in BIG EAST Semifinal showdown on Friday night at the George J. Family Sports Complex. With the victory, UConn moves into its 12^th consecutive BIG EAST Tournament Final set to be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Huskies will face the winner of the Old Dominion/Louisville Semifinal contest. Connecticut moves to 16-4 (6-1 The Big East), while Temple drops to 14-6 (4-3 The Big East) with the loss.

FIVE SET NAIL BITER FINISHES VOLLEYBALL WIN FRIDAY

After watching Louisville totally dismantle Houston in the first two sets Friday night in the KFC YUM! Center...one really couldn't blame fans who had an interest in the Louisville Cardinals Friday night football game for leaving downtown early.

Apparently, the UofL Volleyball offense decided to head down 2nd street as well...the Cards got schooled by an inspired Houston squad in the next two games and Louisville dropped both before winning the tie-breaker fifth set behind Randi Ewing and Emily Juhl.

CARDS WIN! 25-17, 25-18, 13-25, 23-25, 15-6

It also marked the return of UofL Coach Anne Kordes to the hardwood...just days after giving birth to her first daughter Mary. Contrary to what Jeff, Jenny and I discussed on last Saturday's radio show...the infant was not in a front-loader or back pack attached to Anne.

This one was just head-scratching. Louisville looked as dominant as they have all-season in the first two. They looked hopeless and hapless in the third game. The Cards had a chance to end it in the fourth game at 23-23. Houston delivered two booming kills to force the fifth game.

Louisville jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the final set...thanks to a couple of Emily Juhl kills. Houston promptly got back to within three at 8-5. Randi Ewing leaped her way to a couple of kills and blocks to quell the rally, though and take the Cards to 12-0 in AAC play.

Good to see Anne back patrolling the sidelines...although Lee Maes did a fine job in her absence. Cards jump back in Sunday in the YUM! when UC slinks across the bridge...the Bearcats finally did get a win this season at Rutgers and will bring a 1-25 record to town.

LOUISVILLE LOOKS TO LAMBLAST LOYOLA

Louisville WBB starts the official season tonight at the KFC YUM! Center when the Ramblers of University of Loyola-Chicago come to town for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

It's the first round of the preseason WNIT and first time the two schools have ever met.

Four time WNBA Champion, NCAA Champion and three-time Olympic gold medalist Sheryl Swoopes is the first year coach of Loyola-Chicago.

Cards should win this one by 30 or so...unless Swoopes finds a way to sneak on the court and play.

It's on CARDS radio 790 AM (we think) with Matt and AJ. When we said that about the Tuesday 127-40 exhibition win over Pikeville...it wasn't and I heard about it. CARDS TV will also show it to paying subscribers. We'll have a full report on the action in the Sunday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE.

Not sure what's up with the 7 p.m. start time for hoops. Maybe they need time to clean up after the men's game in KFC YUM! this afternoon. Wouldn't 5 p.m. have worked just as well for either contest (soccer or WBB?)

Jeff "Worldwide" McAdams writes our Sunday columns and is well-known for his snark on The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast and love of Volleyball. (He knows he's the brains of the operation...) He secretly wishes he was on a rocket to Mars. With good coffee.. Jeff's been with us the longest out of our current group of writers (beside founder Paulie) and all that proves is that he's slow to change and Paulie probably needs to clean house again and bring in a new group of chimps. He and Case are the guys behind the always malfunctioning podcast format (which we fully expect to create trouble each week). Jeff thinks he has a superior I.T. background than us and we allow him to think so -- we need him to explain "technology" to Paulie. You like Volleyball? He knows Volleyball. More than your average bear. .

He's also co-conspirator on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast with Jeff -- when he has an Internet connection. consider him our soccer expert here at CARDINAL COUPLE....we just have to keep him away from WSOC head coach KFD. During the day he helps blueprint and design better mouse-traps or fancy-schmancy buildings and stuff. Another one of them engineer types. Known for his love of the Seattle Seahawks and dislike of games that end in ties...he adds a voice of reason, intelligence and rationality to THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR PODCASTS. ( Or so he thinks...) Truth told, he's probably a candidate for smartest one of this bunch of hoodlums, outlaws and ne'er do wells...but don't tell him that. Often mistaken for NFL quarterback Andrew Luck...we're 99% sure that ISN'T Bobby Petrino sitting to his left. . Free to a good home that will give him a bath, something to argue about and some Rice-a-Roni.

Jared Anderson is one of our favorite writers and does podcasts with us as well. When he's not busy snapping photos of student-athletes he's taking selfies of himself somewhere. We look forward to his expertise on several sports on these pages and hope he accepts the challenge of taking on the Field Hockey water cannons. He also serves as CARDINAL COUPLE'S official photographer...an extension of his business JDA Photography. He also takes photos for other sites. He spends his working hours impersonating Freddy Farm Bureau around town and making sure folks are insured. Be careful, he might follow you home...but give him a hot meal, warm blanket, internet access, and a corner to sleep in if he does...and he'll be fine and unobtrusive, unless you give him picture-taking capabilities.. It's said that "you're no one unless Jared has taken your picture". He's owned by Katy- she's got the rock to prove it- and that's probably a good thing, because the lad needs a keeper.

Our newest writer, Daryl Foust, is all about Cardinals Athletics. A essential part of the old Cardinal Couple Radio Hour on the ill-fated WCHQ FM, she also had her own radio show (Kentucky Women Talk Sports) and has written for a couple of other Cardinal Sports sites. The standing joke is that she'll show up for the CCRH podcast again someday. A UofL employee, she' stays busy being Aunt Daryl and Lulu's owner. Her WBB and Softball knowledge is top notch . And, if there's a live music festival going on locally, you can expect to see her in attendance. We're honored to have her on board, we invite you to spend Fridays With Daryl at the website -- just don't ask her to predict scores, fill out brackets or be overjoyed at taking the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast Worldwide Quiz during the summer months...she's rumored to be a golfer as well, so "fore" in advance if she's in your neck of the woods.

CO-FOUNDER AND CO-OWNER

The other co-owner and voice of reason....the lovely Sonja...who returns to us on a permanent basis after what can be called an "interesting" time at Rivals. In her words..."you work, slave, research and study for hours and build a site... a women's board. You spend hours on a three column article and several of the readers decide to take aim at you when all you're trying to do is enlighten. I've never seen so many mis-spellings of Louisville WBB players names anywhere...which made me think I was dealing with third graders over there... I have decided to stay off that street and source from here on out and I'm so glad to be back with those who love and appreciate me... not with haters and self-anointed experts " An avid fan of native gardening, hiking and the Smoky Mountains....she loves German potato pancakes and Led Zeppelin....and reminds you to plant native species. I've only seen her mad once (when she was ready to punch out another woman writer who was spreading lies about her) and I've got a feeling that might be a typhoon you want to steer clear of. One of the original writers on the site (with Paulie and David Watson), she has returned. Not as a columnist, but as a proof-reader, confidant and one to bounce thoughts and ideas off of. She's tired of guys with very limited women's basketball knowledge but huge egos calling her out when they are usually chauvinistic, and can be compared to the dog outside barking at something he can't see...We welcome her back and know she'll enjoy the calm waters here. You've got nothing you need to prove or defend with us....you are among those who love you.

CARDINAL COUPLE uses photos from all sources in the daily columns that we present to you. If we've used a photo you have taken and want published credit it for it...just contact us and we'll be glad to do so. Shoot, we might even write a feature article about you and call your Mom and tell her what a good son or daughter you are. WE avoid pictures that may be subject to copywrite. Our legal advisors are busy enough chasing ambulances and wheelchairs when they're not trying to figure out trifecta plays at Churchill. Some of the photos are actually taken by the staff of CARDINAL COUPLE. (When we can get the camera away from the chimps). Paulie uses his cell phone to take pictures, too. You have been warned. Please realize that the captions that go with the photos are sometimes parodies. It's up to you to figure out which ones are and aren't. We can't spoon feed everything to you, you know... I was walking down this road once years ago and I saw this guy chopping down a tree. It was hot, the guy was really sweating and I stopped to watch a while. He finally took a break, cracked a can of beer and then asked me if I had a gun. I hesitated before answering but finally told him that I didn't. He said: "That's a darn shame. I'm cutting down this tree because it's my neighbor's and I'm really pissed off at him right now. I was going to just shoot his sorry a$$...but I decided to do this instead. I'm having second thoughts...though." Sometimes, there just aren't enough trees... (I've never chose that particular walking route since..) .

If I'd taken a picture of that guy working on that tree, I'd been glad to share it with the entire world. That's the way WE see other photos out there. Share 'em and create through exposure and appreciation. We provide credit to the photographer when we feel it's needed. We also pay our taxes on time...
