Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- Catching up on the Cards

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( Cardinal Couple columnist and radio personality Jenny O'Bryan checks in with the "hump day" edition of CC. Today, she looks at golfers, hoopsters, kickers and sticks!)

FORE!

The golf team finished the fall season with a trip to San Antonio, Texas in the Alamo Invitational.  The team finished overall in 9th place with a score of 872.  Oklahoma won the event with an 840, LSU second with an 848 and Arkansas 3rd with a score of 851.

Emily Haas led the team finishing tied for 17th.   Laura Restrepo finished tied at 22nd, Katie Petrino finish tied at 50th and Tara Lyons tied at 61st.

The team will open their spring season February 17.

Congratulations to the women of golf as they finish up a strong fall schedule.

GETTING THEIR KICKS

Several polls were released on Tuesday with 3 of our women’s teams ranked.

Soccer finished the regular season this past weekend earning a first round bye in The American Conference Tournament.  The kickin’ Cards finished the season with an overall record of 12-4-1 and were rewarded with an appearance in the polls.

In the rankings for the first time this season the Cards came in at 24th in the Soccer America Poll and 25th in the Top Drawer Soccer Poll.  As Jeff mentioned in the Tuesday comment section the typical poll in soccer that is referenced is the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).   In this poll the Cards are getting votes but have not quite cracked the top 25.

Regardless of the polling, the soccer team is getting some recognition for a great season played.  Having earned the first round bye, you can see your Soccer Cards at Cardinal Park on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. matching up against the winner of Memphis vs. Houston on Friday evening.   (Louisville beat both teams in regular season play).

Get out and see the team this Sunday!

THE FLOCK PREPARES FOR TOURNEY

As we have been talking about on Cardinal Couple Radio hour, the Field Hockey Cards have had a fantastic season.    The team heads in to the final weekend of regular season play, at home at Trager Field, this weekend before Big East Tournament play starts next weekend.

The most recent polling has the hockey team heading in to the final weekend ranked 14th in the nation!   Get out and support your favorite sticks this weekend and join the team for senior day against Kent State on Sunday.

HOOPS DE DOO!

FINALLY, basketball season is here!  With one week to go before the lone exhibition game of the season for our basketball team, the first 2013-14 USA Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday.    The coaches ranked Louisville 5th in the nation coming in behind Connecticut, Duke, Stanford and Tennessee.    Check here for the full poll:

Connecticut enters the season as the prohibitive favorite to win the National Championship ( hmm...how’d that work out for Baylor?) and received all but one vote from the coaches, Tennessee receiving a lone vote.

  1. I look at the 13 games before AAC play and see the Cards going 10-3. The Cats will have their number in Lexington, Florida State could be a powerhouse this season and they lose to someone in the finals of the preseason WNIT. Maybe Oklahoma.

  2. Also, Paulie are you giving out Breeders Cup picks this year? I made some serious profit on your and Sonja's selections last year.

  4. Stanford is way overrated in WCBB. They just lost two starters, one to chronic concussions and one due to a third ACL blow out. They probably won't win the PAC 12. UCLA looks strong with Cal at a close second out west.

I also don't see how they can justify Tennessee being rated above the Cards.

    1. I agree with you that Stanford is overrated but not Tennessee. Tenn has a lot coming back + one of the top HS players in the country coming in. They had a terrible outside shooting game against Lville in tournament in a game that saw poor substitution decisions by both coaches, but they were more consistent than Lville throughout the season.
As to UConn's label as "unbeatable" this season compared to Baylor's having that label last season, there's an important difference: UConn has a coach.

    2. Tennessee & Warlick want and need to be a money club, but the program just isn't anymore. Agreed their frontline is tall and talented but they haven't done anything in the tourney for more than half a decade. I think it's roundball karma. Summitt did more damage to WCBB as a sport by canceling UConn during the season back in 2007 than any number of missed layups the sport gets criticized for.

Warlick is just like many lifetime assistants. The top coaching job is a much different place to be. As far as the season goes, I think we'll all swap an impressive regular season record for something like what happened for the Cards last year. That said, they need to continue to deliver in the tourney if they are going to continue to get the benefit of the doubt. For now the Cards and Walz are money in the tourney.

In any case it should be a great season. In particular I'm looking forward to seeing how well Walz handles the squad and preps them for the tourney. If he has another run like last year he's positioning himself at the very top of his profession.
