WALZ DEALT A GOOD HAND WITH 2013-14 ROSTER
I'm not sure if Jeff Walz is a poker player or not. If he is, he'd have to bet this hand of 2013-14 players pretty heavily. If the game was Texas Hold 'Em,. he'd be wise to go "all in". Cardinal fans might want to start checking out lodging in Nashville for the FINAL FOUR...because the deck is loaded and the dealer knows how to shuffle with the skill of a Vegas Blackjack card turner.

The first thing that stands out when you look at this roster is depth. Eight guards that will battle for three spots on the court. Keeping in the card playing tone of today's article, I'm guessing the first three cards that the dealer flips over are Shoni, Bria and Nita. After that...it's anyone's guess. The three guards spot will utilize 120 minutes of 200 total for a regulation game. Divided equally...that's 15 minutes per Card guard. Although it's possible we'll see that in some of the non-conference games...and Walz has been known to go with a four guard attack...my bet is that in conference play (barring injuries and foul trouble) Jude and Tia see the most minutes off the bench at the 1,2, or 3. We are hearing rave reviews on the play of Starr Breedlove in practice. Megan Deines drew the start early last season. Monny Niamke was the starting point guard for Lindsey Wilson two years ago. Yep. Cards got guards. Enough to protect Buckingham Palace. Moving inside...five "bigs" will compete for the other 80 minutes. This equals out to 16 per girl. Sherrone Vails has been dealt out of this hand with an injury...and she'd be one of the first two cards dealt, in my opinion, if healthy. We'll go with Sara Hammond and Asia Taylor as the two that get to run out and slap Louie's hand when the lights go out at the KFC YUM! Center. Hammond is strong, smart and relentless in the paint. Word got to me that A-Tayy was looking the best of the entire team early on in practice sessons. A sore ankle has probably slowed down the Columbus conqueror a bit...but if healthy by Nov 5th., I expect to see her out there. Cortnee Walton had some quality minutes last season (along with a few Homer Simpson head-slapping ones from the charity stripe) and should provide valuable minutes off the bench. Emmonnie Henderson is the first Lady Card to don #32 since Kala Faulkner strutted it back in 2007. If "E" comes through as most are predicting she will...she'll be surrounded by 3. 11, 32, 41 and ESPN after most games. Shaunta Dyer is the "wildcard" here. She was playing so well last year before the knee went out. If she can return to that level, she could start all season. WE hope she can. So...how will the final hand turn out when these Cards are being dealt in March? I hope three things happen: 1) I hope UofL gets to meet UConn 4 times. This means we've made the tournament. I don't think there is any doubt that the Lady Cards will. 2) I hope UConn is in a different region and across the bracket from us when March Madness arrives. 3) I hope I'm sitting on Media Row in Nashville in March watching the mad scientist at work.
