FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Tokyo has been on my mind. I've had the Games on since they began...pretty much. Track and field has occupied the past weeknights.  By the time this post goes live, Allyson Felix will have run for a 10th career medal — and seventh gold — when she takes part in the 400 meters final Friday, Aug. 6 at 8:35am on Peacock.  The women's 400 final will re-air on NBC primetime at roughly 9 p.m. ET.

I know alot of local fans have been anticipating the debut of top-15 freshman, Payton Verhulst, who is playing on the USA team in the U19 World Cup. Team USA is scheduled to face Italy Saturday Aug, 7th at 2:30 PM EDT in Debrecen, Hungary. In 2019, Verhulst was named MVP after leading the USA U16 team to gold.  

A personal follow-up on my golf game and performance at Monday's event.. I wasn't the worst on my team!  Some of my drives were the best ball, some of my fairway shots were the best ball and some of my putts carried our team to a -7 score.  I was pleased with my game, it was a gorgeous day and a lot of laughs were had.  Anybody happen to know the oldest lady to compete for Team USA golf?!  Just want to know all of my options! 

I also got the opportunity to meet Coach Dani Busboom-Kelly at the event.  I told her I was the person who 'makes the replays happen' in house at L&N arena.  She thanked me for introducing myself.  Short and sweet exchange.  I am looking forward to seeing her and the sparkly red blazer back on the sidelines this fall.  We're a couple weeks from an inter-squad scrimmage Aug 21st and just under a month out from the first match at home for the Cards Sept 3rd.

Brooke swam at Sacred Heart High School here in Louisville and is good friends with the daughter of one of Paulie's best friends. Softball Wins Awards and Begins ACC Tournament -- Women's Golf Finishes up Regional Play -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Softball Earns Three Conference Awards

Three Louisville softball players received recognition with ACC awards yesterday.  Pitcher Megan Hensley and shortstop Sidney Melton were named to the All-ACC first team and second baseman Maddy Newman was named to the All-ACC freshman team.

This is Hensley's second appearance on the All-ACC team after earning the honors in 2016.  She has played a crucial role on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.  However, she does prefer hitting over pitching and would step up to the plate if she could only choose one.  Melton makes her first appearance on the conference team.  She is perfect in stolen bases this year and has crossed the plate a team-high 19 times.  Newman filled in early in the season at second base and would not surrender that position.  She has had one of the top rookie

performances by a Louisville player since the university parted ways with the Big East.  All three players will be returning to Louisville's roster next season.

Florida State claimed a majority of the major awards by taking Player of the Year (Jessie Warren) Pitcher of the Year (Kylee Hanson), and Freshman of the Year (Sydney Sherrill).  Holly Aprile of Pittsburgh took home Coach of the Year.

Louisville Softball Begins ACC Tournament

Desperately needing something to draw the NCAA Tournament committee's eyes this direction the 8-seeded Louisville softball team hopes to make a run in the ACC Tournament.  The Cards bused to Atlanta yesterday and will face 9-seeded Syracuse in one of the play-in games.  The winner will face 1-seeded Florida State.

The Cards finished 10-12 in conference play this season, well below the coaches' preseason predictions of finishing fourth.  I thought they could finish as high as second or third, but the Cards never did piece everything together.

The Cards lead the all-time series with Syracuse 21-10 with most of those games being played when the two teams were conference rivals in the Big East.  This season the teams are 1-1 against each other this year after the third game of the series was canceled due to inclement weather.

Today's game is set for 1:00 p.m., and can be viewed online on Watch ESPN.  Hopefully we might see a local station such as Fox Sports South pick it up for tv viewing.

Women's Golf Enters Final Day of Play in Seventh

Enjoying the sun and beautiful weather out in San Francisco the women's golf team is sitting in a tie for seventh place and just one stroke out of sixth.  The Cards shot a 6-over-par 294 yesterday and are 5-over-par 581 throughout the whole event so far.

Lauren Hartlage and Delaney Shah both shot an even-par of 72 yesterday to lead the way.  Hartlage is tied for 12th overall and Shah sits in a tie for 38th.  Olivia Cason is tied for 29th after struggling in the second round.

The top six teams from each region advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, O.K., so the Cards do have a little bit of work cut out for them.  Louisville will need to make up their one-stroke deficit and hopefully will pull ahead further from their own success or have North Carolina and Oklahoma State struggle on the final day of events.

A trip to the NCAA Championships would mark the program's second trip with the other coming in 2008.

If your kids are feeling energetic they can bike to school today.  It is also national school nurse day, and believe me, with what they deal with they deserve at least a week of recognition, especially with the Hep A outbreak going on around town.  For you film critics Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo premiered on this day in 1958.  We can also wish Billy Joel a happy birthday today.  I saw him start a fire one time, but I know no one will believe me.

With Minout "Minnie" Mink leaving UofL for good and returning home I was hoping to get a video interview with her before she left, but the filed hockey star procrastinated on packing a wee bit too much so we are in the works of an alternative.  Be on the lookouts to see what the Mink has to say about her time as a Cardinal and her time in the states as well as what her "walk-up" song would be. Probably not anything Billy Joel sang or wrote?

Let's Be Friends - Cardinal Couple Thursday

Without Golf there would be no news

Two Louisville Women's Golf teams are competing in the Pure Silk Women's Collegiate Team Championship.  This is a three day tournament put on by the Women's Golf Coaches Association.  Each of the three days involves a different golf format.  The first day is a Alternating Shot format for each two person team.  The second day switches to a Best Ball format, and the third day is a Best Combined Score.

Louisville's two teams are Emily Haas with Laura Restrepo, and Tara Lyons with Katie Petrino.  Haas and Restrepo shot a 67 in the Best Ball round yesterday, for a current tally of 144...you math wizzes will deduce that they shot a 77 in the Alternating Ball Tuesday.  Lyons and Petrino are sitting on score of 149 with rounds of 78 Tuesday and 71 yesterday.

144 is good for 4th place currently, only 6 strokes back from the leaders from Michigan State and only 2 strokes back from 2nd place held by a team from Tennessee.  Iowa holds the 3rd spot.  Lyons and Petrino's 149 is good for the the 9th place.

Let's Be Friends

As I was reading some news articles on one of my 19 devices (it was 18, but I had a new laptop get dropped off on my desk at work Tuesday), I came across an article from the CBS Sports Blog.  You may be aware...we mentioned it very briefly at the end of Saturday's Cardinal Couple Radio Hour show...CBS Sports recently named Louisville as the most successful college athletic program of the year.  This article...go ahead and go read it, I'll wait for you here...is clearly intended to be mostly about Tom Jurich's success leading the UofL Athletic program, particularly from the perspective of Rick Pitino's Basketball team.  While I'll stand and agree with anyone that wants to sing the praises of Tom Jurich and what he's done for the UofL Athletic Department, there was something else in Gary Parrish's blog that struck me.

While talking about what Tom Jurich has built at Louisville, 3 words seemed to stand out to me, "culture," "friendship," and "family."

I'm definitely not an insider of the UofL Athletic Department, but I have been able to see, from the outside, some of the evidence of this culture, these friendships, and the strong family-like bond among many of the coaches, staff and student-athletes.  Jeff Walz is right, too, its not just between the basketball teams.

If you want to see some of your favorite students athletes, your best bet may be to go to other UofL sporting events.  Its pretty rare, these days, to go to a UofL sporting event and not see athletes from other sports there cheering on the team.  Gorgui Dieng and Peyton Siva were regular attendees at Volleyball and the Women's Basketball games and often had other Men's Basketball players in tow.  The Swimming and Diving teams frequently make their presence known at various Volleyball matches, sometimes in quite dramatic fashion.  Softball, and Baseball games present a veritable parade of student-athlete spectators.

When you attend these events, you start to see these familiar faces in the crowds, particularly if you go to some of the events where the crowds are smaller, like Lacrosse...another good reason to go see Kellie Young's team play...but I think more importantly, you start to see that these people are there because they are invested in each other, they like each other, and they genuinely want to see all of the teams and players succeed.

In my mind, this may be the greatest measure of success for Tom Jurich and the rest of the UofL Athletic Department.

We're a fan blog, trying to share the joy and excitement of UofL Women's Athletics, and in doing so, we frequently post score updates, results, commentary about the play of various athletes on the field or court, but sometimes I think its good to take a step back and remember that these young women and men are real people, with real challenges in their lives.  Part of being a fan, then, is supporting these young people as they transition through some of the most interesting 4 or 5 years of their lives.  Part of why I'm such a fan of the University of Louisville Athletics is because of this culture that that has been built.  It makes it extra special to be a fan when you see the Athletic Department doing things "Right", doing things with integrity, doing things with honesty, and doing things in mutual support of each other.  That's an organization, and group of people, that I'm proud to cheer for.

Cardinal Couple Radio Show

Speaking of the radio show, we're excited to get back in the studio again this week, Saturday at 11am on http://www.crescenthillradio.com, after having, by far and away the biggest response and number of listens to our show from last week on the Sound Cloud.  By biggest response, its not even a close contest...less than a week from upload, we've had well over triple the number of plays of our next highest show archive, which goes back to early March.

This week, we'll have the second part of my interview with Head Volleyball Coach Anne Kordes, covering what they're doing now in the pre-season to get ready for the fall schedule of matches, as well as her thoughts on scheduling philosophies and how they're using non-conference scheduling to prepare the team for success.  I haven't heard what Paulie has up his sleeves for the show, yet, but I'm sure it'll be entertaining.

Formula for a Louisville Win at Providence  

On a night when Sara Hammond was not having her best game others stepped up to create such a balanced attack that Providence could not shut Louisville down by focusing on only one.  Note: Shoni Schimmel with 17 Bria Smith scored 17 Nita Slaughter 12 and Monique Reid 11.

                               University of Connecticut ahead

Be sure to check the site tomorrow for Quentin and Paul’s planned in depth pre-game report regarding Tuesday’s away game at Hartford against UConn.   It is reported to be available on the CBS Sports Network at 9 PM.

                                               Bearcats to visit the KFC YUM! Center

We have to wait until this Friday to again see the basketball women in person.  They will be playing Cincinnati at the home beginning at 7:00.   The fans have been great with almost 10,000 at last mid-week week’s game against Rutgers but it is time for us to step it up.  This week the holidays are behind us and the game is not on a weekday night so this is the time for Louisville to challenge Tennessee for the #1 school for fan attendance.

UCF CHALLENGE

Women’s Golf is gearing up for a February 10-12 winter challenge located in Sorrento, FL. while later  in the month they will strain themselves to spent time in Miami Lakes, FL so they can participate in the Sir Pizza Challenge.  A trip to Hawaii follows in March.   Congratulations to the team’s scheduler!  I am sure their future recruits are taking note and just in case they are I found a woman’s golf recruiting form at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-golf/spec-rel/lou-w-golf-recruit-form.html.

LACROSSE

The Lacrosse team’s scheduler should confer with the golf team’s person  for instead of suffering through Florida and Hawaii  like their fellow Louisville athletes, instead, in less than a month, they begin their schedule here at the U of L LaCrosse Stadium on Feb. 10^th, 16^th and 23 against Canisius, Ohio State then Old Dominion.  Coach Kellie Young enters her 6^th season as head coach.

Lacrosse is a sport that several of us here at CARDINAL COUPLE haved vowed to learn more about this season. Our current plans are to send Sandy to a lacrosse boot camp and have her go through the day-to-day practices and activities that the players in training participate in. We'll probably have Timmy the Intern and a EMS staffer or two accompany her. In our never-ending quest to provide you the best in Louisville womens' athletics, we feel this is a novel idea and ground breaking.

TRACK

Fortunately for the track team, indoor arenas not only exist but are scheduled for their January 25-26 participation in the IU Relays being held at Bloomington, Indiana and in the Rod McCravy Memorial being held at Lexington, KY.  Without the indoor arenas, imagine the hurdlers in full snow bunny outfits where all of the hurdles are knocked over by their bunny feet shoes.  Instead, they have posted three wins and hit 18 Big East qualifying marks on the final day of the Kentucky Invitational, which was last Saturday.   Details of the meet are available at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-track/recaps/011213aaa.html.

TENNIS

Xavier and Morehead State arrive in Louisville for a match at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center this Sunday, January 20 with Southern Illinois and Miami of Ohio following on Saturday the 26^th.  They keep a pretty busy schedule through February with the Big East Championships set for Mid-April.   You can check out their complete schedule at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-tennis/sched/lou-w-tennis-sched.html.  They go into this season for “the first time in program history”, with two players ranked in the top 100 going into the dual match season.   Those players are Junior Rebecca Shine and junior teammate Julia Fellerhoff ranked No. 84 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Our swim and diving team has only 4 events left before the Feb 27 Big East Championships at Indianapolis.  They swept visiting BIG EAST rival Cincinnati Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Cardinal men won 184-100 and the Cardinal women won 188-104.  All but 1 of the upcoming matches are away starting in Dallas but on the January 26^th they will be in Lexington Kentucky before a final match against Indiana is held at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on February 1.

SOFTBALL

The softball team scheduler seems to have split allegiances with that of the golf and Lacrosse teams folks.   They open the season Feb 8th. in Las Vegas and will then spend time in Jacksonville, Florida for games on the 15^th, 16 and 17^th.   The women will play Stony Brook, Bethune Cookman, Ohio State, Jacksonville, and again against Stony Brook.  They next show a split decision of scheduling with games at Ulmer Stadium on February 22, 23 and 24 in the Cardinal Classic.

Feburary in Las Vegas, Jacksonville or Louisville can be hit or miss on the weather. Here's hoping for blue skies and sunny days for Sandy Pearsall's squad.

Paul and Sonja have been fortunate enough to play the role of football team groupie but in the meantime the remaining contributors struggle to keep up with their high quality of reporting.  With no time available this wekend I brought in a couple of sub-contributors for assistance.

Central Cardinal Club 2012 Holiday Boutique and Style Show

We are proud to announce that the Central Cardinal Club is organizing a Holiday Boutique and Style Show all for the purpose of your being able to meet The Cardinal Couple and many of those contributing articles to the site.  Paul will be at the October 16 show from its 11 am beginning and others will join him during the day until the program ends at 9 pm.  Timmy is still undecided if he will be available for autographs.

Red White Scrimmage

I understand last night’s men’s basketball Red White Scrimmage went well and was successful.  As a note of interest:  Many teams across the country are combining such new season events for their men’s and women’s basketball teams.    In recent years, U of L has normally been ahead of the curve when it comes to promotion of their women’s teams but not this time.               

       

                                         

I am sure that there are many good reasons for the UL women’s basketball team to not have either a combined or sole pre-season event but other schools across the nation have begun thinking differently.  I don’t really believe that # 20 ranked and UL highly recruited guard Saniya Chong signed with Connecticut on Saturday only because of their Friday night combined men’s and women’s basketball team kick off (“First Night”) but her official visit and signing did conveniently occur during the weekend of the event.  It couldn’t have hurt for recruits to see such pre-season excitement and attention being given to both of the teams.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball played St. John’s Friday at St. Johns and came away with a  3-2 win over St. in BIG EAST volleyball action. Scoring was 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 19-25 and 15-9.  The women are now 17-3 and 6-1 in the Big East and play again today at 2:00  at UConn.

Today the Golf team continues play at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The team finished play in yesterday Second round in 12^th place with Tar Lyons leading for the Cardinals.  All day play continues today at Chapel Hill, NC.

CROSS COUNTRY

Yesterday the cross country team participated in the NCAA Division I Pre-National Meet at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park which is the site for this year’s 2012 NCAA Championships.  The U of L women were lead by sophomore Michelle Molodynia who completed a career best 6K time o f22:16.10.

Tomorrow and Tuesday Women’s Tennis will participate in all day competition at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships which is held at West Lafayette, Indiana.

It is a messy, messy time of year with multiple weather temperature changes and periodic rain that keeps the dirty clothes piling up.   In addition, add all of the extra clothing needs due to all of the recruiting traveling going on from in house visits and official visits

BASKETBALL

We are at the crossroads where basketball activity is busy. For the fan, though, there are no games to attend.  There are only lots of internet rumblings and gossip about recruits visits and reactions to them -- both their official visit to the schools and at their homes.  Those of us who are eagerly awaiting the season’s first game find ourselves, while trying to fill in the building excitement, seeking out any piece of information to be found.  I hear that Jenny is
even bribing Coco to hide out in the stalls of various women’s restrooms and listen for new pieces of recruiting information.   

The recent and upcoming visitors, as well as other young ladies that Jeff is seeking can in the future become known as Louisville’s trail blazers

 and a member of a historical break out recruiting class or they can choose to individually be known as just another of the followers of early greats from other schools.   To all of those who sign on, welcome aboard and hang on as it is going to be a great ride as you make your own history!

Sunday was the home visit of Emmonnie Henderson, where it was reported as a great visit, while Mercedes home visit was reported to have been on Tuesday as she was definitely saving the best visit for last.  Her expected official Louisville trip set for October 26.  One of our weekend visitors, Alex Harris – another post player -  committed to Penn State over Louisville & Michigan so my dual post game plan seems to be in tatters.   Included in the report is that Duke was also visiting Kentucky’s Becca Greenwell last night. Wonder what Jo Ann is telling recruits these days. Anyone with updates to these or other recruits information,   please feel free to send in comments.

Reminder of the Tip off Luncheon:

The annual Tip Off Luncheon is set for Tuesday October 23 with doors opening at 11:15 am.  The event will be held at the YUM! Center and was a sold out event last year so get your ticket reservations in as soon as possible.   University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz will again be the featured speaker with team members also present (who are not in class).  Tickets for the event are $30 each on a first come, first serve basis.  You can call the U of L special events office at (502) 852-0706. As long as several of the players are able to make a speedy enough recovery from earlier injuries they will maintain and improve upon the ranking.  Otherwise, I have total confidence in their ability to do as well or better as the season progresses.

GOLF

The Louisville women's golf team will host the annual Cardinal Cup Monday, Sept. 17 and Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. The Cardinals will host UTC, ETSU, UNC Wilmington, Illinois State, James Madison, Akron, Cincinnati, Maryland, Georgia State, Missouri, Bradley, UNC Greensboro, Charleston Southern and Rollins College for a 15-team field with 12 individuals also competing.

The teams will play 36 holes on Monday with an 8:40 a.m. shotgun start and 18 holes on Tuesday with an 8:40 a.m. shotgun start.  Information is directly from the University’s Official Golf Page located at http://www.uoflsports.com/sports/w-golf/spec-rel/091512aab.html.

Golf Tournament Update:

The University of Louisville women's golf team leads the field with a score of 591 after two rounds in the Cardinal Cup held at the Cardinal Club Course in Simpsonville. The Cardinals shot a 294 in the first round and a 297 in the second round to move up four spots to take the lead. Cincinnati is currently second with a score of 596. Missouri and Georgia State are tied for third with a score of 599. Sophomore Emily Haas currently leads the field.

CHEERLEADING

It is possible that this season on Glee we will be seeing authentic Louisville Cheerleading uniforms and swag.  The producers of the show have requested items for main character Santana, played by actress Naya Rivera.  Last season she announced that “she was headed to the Derby City after receiving a full cheerleading scholarship to U of L. Cheerleader Basic Requirements:

·         Incoming freshman ARE eligible to try out.

·         Transfer students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 are eligible to try out.

·         Current U of L students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours) to be eligible to try out.

·         Try-out packet must be submitted at the first round of auditions with a $40 fee.

·         There is NOT a point system. The coach makes the final team selections after advisement from current and/or former captains.

VOLLEYBALL

Lola Arslanbekova was selected as the Louisville Student-Athlete of the Week.

Louisville wins the Louisville Invitational by beating Miami and Lola with 21 kills and nine digs was voted as MVP. Teammates Kaitlynn James and Brooke Mattingly join her on the all-tournament team. Volleyball Promotions

Friday Sept 21 at 7:00 is Alumni Night at the YUM! Center.  Members of the UL alumni association can gain entry to the game against DePaul for $2.00. The squad is #10 in the nation in the latest Volleyball poll. 

                           

Also: Post Game against Notre Dame on September 23 (2:00 match) there will be Post Match Youth Clinic.  This is a free volleyball clinic for K-8 kids which will be held on the court after the game by the staff and team.  Waivers are needed.  Additional information can be found at http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/lou/sports/w-volley/auto_pdf/2012-13/misc_non_event/vb-12-clinicwaiver.pdf   Autographs from the team will be available after the clinic to participants.

Louisville Soccer moves up to 10^th in the Nation.

The Louisville women's soccer team earned a 2-0 road victory over DePaul on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field.  With the win, the Cardinals improved to 6-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in BIG EAST Conference action, while the Blue Demons dropped to 5-4-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in league games with the loss.

NASCAR RACING NATIONALS

While I am aware that Nationals stockcar racing with NASCAR is not a University of Louisville women’s sporting activity – In this 40^th anniversary year of Title IX I could not resist a shout out to Brad Sweet who on Saturday drove car # 38 in the Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 and helped to remind us there are still all too many folks out there that just can’t handle dealing with females who are attempting to be as successful as others in formerly all male dominated sports.   It is sad but on Saturday, while a lap down from the leaders, Brad blocked Danica Patrick for a number of laps and did not allow a standard courtesy pass until it was too late for her to challenge moving from the 12 spot to possibly a top 10 finish.  Way to go Brad!

EVENTS

Cardinal Couple has been invited to set up a booth at this year’s Central Cardinal Club Holiday Boutique and Fashion Show. The event takes place Tuesday, Oct. 16th. from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the PNC Club at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.  There are a lot of neat silent auction items available for viewing or to place a bid on. Paul and Sonja will be distributing flyers and business cards, talking women's sports with whoever stops by. and offering people a chance to register for a piece of Cardinal memorabilia that we're giving away. Others of us who periodically contribute to the blog will be dropping by also.  If I can’t get finished with my laundry I can always bring it with me to hang dry.

There will be a silent auction, holiday shopping , a lunch Buffet ($16 per person), fashion show, free wine tasting throughout the day and dinner buffet ($20 per person).                                                              SHE'S OUR ANGEL 

Angel McCoughtry made a 2nd quarter apperance at the UofL v UNC football game wearing her Olympic Gold Medal and getting a massive, standing ovation from the 55,000 in attendance. She also tailgated in the lot with Cardinal fans before the game and all this after leading her Atlanta Dream squad to a victory Friday night. 

The Dream is firmly ensconced in third place in the WNBA Eastern Division and will begin playoff battles after two more regular season tilts.
