No time in Sandy’s house this weekend for laundry

Paul and Sonja have been fortunate enough to play the role of football team groupie but in the meantime the remaining contributors struggle to keep up with their high quality of reporting.  With no time available this wekend I brought in a couple of sub-contributors for assistance.

Central Cardinal Club 2012 Holiday Boutique and Style Show

We are proud to announce that the Central Cardinal Club is organizing a Holiday Boutique and Style Show all for the purpose of your being able to meet The Cardinal Couple and many of those contributing articles to the site.  Paul will be at the October 16 show from its 11 am beginning and others will join him during the day until the program ends at 9 pm.  Timmy is still undecided if he will be available for autographs.

The show is being held at the PNC Club in Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.  The GPS address is 2800 S Floyd St.  The Cardinal Couple team thanks Susan Sweeney Crum for agreeing to emcee for the Style Show Luncheon.

Red White Scrimmage

I understand last night’s men’s basketball Red White Scrimmage went well and was successful.  As a note of interest:  Many teams across the country are combining such new season events for their men’s and women’s basketball teams.    In recent years, U of L has normally been ahead of the curve when it comes to promotion of their women’s teams but not this time.               

       

                                         

I am sure that there are many good reasons for the UL women’s basketball team to not have either a combined or sole pre-season event but other schools across the nation have begun thinking differently.  I don’t really believe that # 20 ranked and UL highly recruited guard Saniya Chong signed with Connecticut on Saturday only because of their Friday night combined men’s and women’s basketball team kick off (“First Night”) but her official visit and signing did conveniently occur during the weekend of the event.  It couldn’t have hurt for recruits to see such pre-season excitement and attention being given to both of the teams.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball played St. John’s Friday at St. Johns and came away with a  3-2 win over St. in BIG EAST volleyball action. Scoring was 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 19-25 and 15-9.  The women are now 17-3 and 6-1 in the Big East and play again today at 2:00  at UConn.

GOLF

Today the Golf team continues play at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The team finished play in yesterday Second round in 12^th place with Tar Lyons leading for the Cardinals.  All day play continues today at Chapel Hill, NC.

CROSS COUNTRY

Yesterday the cross country team participated in the NCAA Division I Pre-National Meet at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park which is the site for this year’s 2012 NCAA Championships.  The U of L women were lead by sophomore Michelle Molodynia who completed a career best 6K time o f22:16.10.

It's Raining Mud Pies and Victories

TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Columnist Sandy Walker takes us on her weekly journey through Cardinal women's sports. We think you'll enjoy her new feature that takes a look back at some classic sports moments from the days when gasoline was 30 cents a gallon and rap was something you did on a door to announce your presence. 

 

 This weekend’s rain has caused the laundry to be particularly messy and it is taking forever to complete each article.  The mud puddles combined with Bill the Goat knocking over the tailgating food table left every piece of clothing in a mess.  Add Timmy’s decision to make and sell mud pies as a fundraiser for the School for Exceptional Primates during tailgating and then throwing the left-over’s at Coco did not help as every clothing item is now requiring soaking and spot washing.  Happily, with the win over the Kitty Cats no one cares too much or became upset over the stained clothes.   The clean-up is nothing like what is needed for many of the kittens who either didn’t make it to their litter boxes in time or who ran out of litter.

 INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED

 

·          Get a bucket of hot soapy water.

·          Place the washboard inside the hot soapy water.

·          Take one clothing item and soak it in the bucket.

·          Press the clothing up against the metal ridges of the washboard and rub it up and down.

·          Squeeze clothing item to dump the dirt off of it.

·          The cycle is repeated a second time to make sure all of the dirt has been removed from the clothing.

Congratulations are sent to each of the Women’s Card Teams this weekend as it is an easy week to report outcomes.  All matches from each of these teams (Volleyball {KY match and Battle of the Bluegrass Tournament Winners}  Field Hockey, Soccer, Cross Country) with events in the last week are reported as WINS.

HOW IT WAS

Prior to Title IX, girls and women took on various tasks and lived circumstances which are now humorous but at the time were just how it was if we wanted to be able to play any level of organized sports.  I hope that on a weekly basis to be able to share one or more of the situations women found themselves in due to their desire to compete but I need help from our readers.  If anyone has stories they would like to share please add them to the comments section, or pick up your rotary phone and e-mail me at Swalker0005@gmail.com.

As a Starter: One Louisville, KY Academy school was able to pay their basketball referees by waiting until after the game was over and collecting the soda machine change which had accumulated during the week and the game. 

                                 

                                        

The referees were then paid with the quarters, dimes and nickels from the machine sales.

SHE’S BACK!

As of Sunday’s game Angel is back.  Not only was she physically back on the Atlanta Dream court she also is back in form as 18 of her 24 game points (7-8 from the field in 4^th quarter) were scored during the 4^th quarter. The Dream were able to pull away from an end of 3^rd quarter tie to a 87-80 win.  

I am looking for this year’s playoff outcome to end differently for the Dream as Angel finally has assistance from others.  Opponents can no longer key solely only Angel as in the Dream’s defeat of the Connecticut Sun as Erika De Souza and Sancho Lyttle both had double doubles with 14 points and 12 rebounds and 15 points and 13 rebounds respectively.

VOLLEYBALL

Friday night’s 25-23, 25-12 and 25-17 win over Duke in the first round of the Cardinal Classic KFC Yum! Center was the team’s 800^th win.  The weekend's 3-0 sweep resulted in its win of the Tournament. Marshall and Samford were the other victims.  This win was preceded by their 3-1 upset win over #10 ranked Kentucky on Wednesday night.

                                                                                        FIELD HOCKEY           

The Cards downed Ball State 5-0 on Monday at Trager Stadium. Louisville scored there first goal just two minutes into the contest and led 4-0 at the half.  The first big road trip of the season awaits with games at Ohio and Indiana later this week.

RECRUITING

There is no current word on last weekend’s planned “unofficial” campus visit of class of 2014 junior forward Sydney Brackemyre.  Anyone with specific news or sightings please contact cardinalcouple.com with your information which will be shared, if the information passes Sonja’s approval.  Sydney is to be the first of several fall visitors to campus.  We will soon be seeing and hearing of the visits by Saniya Chong, Alexandria Harris, Emmonie Henderson, Mercedes Russell and Imani Wright (5'11" guard from Hooks, TX).  Fortunately there is plenty of room for each of them both for scholarships and floor position.

MERCEDES / REBECCA UPDATE

Gold was won on Sunday by the USA, 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women of which Mercedes Russell scored 8 points, 6 rebounds 3 blocks and 2 steals. The US team knocked off Spain by a score of 75-62 with the 13 point margin being the closest final any team has come to beating the USA team.   Rebecca Greenwell contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds. NCAA COMPLIANCE and SOCIAL MEDIA ISSUES

We seem to be seeing more and more issues where NCAA compliance infractions are at issue.  It was recently announced that a major scandal occurred when a  __________ fan called a recruit and asked him about his status.  The player has stated that he was used to receiving reporters calls and thought the caller was just another of the same but it turned out to be a fan who was trying to encourage him to stay with his school commitment.   The player stated "I didn't think nothing of it until somebody called me, an ESPN guy, who told me the guy put it on Twitter that he talked to me on the phone."  Later the “fan” began to boast on a popular website’s message board about reaching out to recruits.  NCAA rules state that the rules have been violated by the “assisting in recruiting a prospect over the telephone, via social media or in person.”  At this point both the recruit and the University are at risk.

At the U of L women’s basketball elite camp Cardinal Couple owners and staff observed U of L coaches spending the beginning of the clinic sessions attempting to explain many of the basic rules of recruiting and outside contact to the campers and although I learned much that day, I absolutely do not profess to even have a novice level of knowledge of the NCAA regulations.  If asked specific questions concerning recruit contact  – my answer would be, “I have no idea but avoiding individual contact would appear to be the safest action.   For those of you who just need to know more:

BASKETBALL WORKOUTS BEGIN

Monday’s first day of individual workouts for the UL basketball team is complete.  Coaches Walz and Williams indicated that the day was going great with improvements from many of the players who apparently are already bonded close as a team.  Tweets of several players indicated that it was great to be back in the gym and that the players “was putting in work”.  Shawnta indicated that she jogged for 20 minutes today and had no pain which is great progress as her paint play is definitely needed.      

Word is that there will be a mid-night madness for the women this year.   You will know when we know.

LACROSSE

The UL lacrosse team joined other IWLCA Division 1 Academic Squads as a team which maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average.  The team average was enhanced by Janaye Dzikewich’s 3.96 GPA in her exercise physiology master’s degree work and Katie Oliverio’s  3.77 grade-point average in sport administration.
