End of Week, End of Season - Friday Cardinal Couple

Two Sports Seasons End

Field Hockey and Soccer both saw their seasons end yesterday.

Field Hockey was waiting on results from other competitions in the conference to decide their fate, and the results weren't what was desired in Trager Stadium.

Specifically, the results came down to the Stanford vs Cal game.  UofL was in a tie for last place in the conference with the two California teams, and the conference tournament takes eight out of the nine teams in conference to the conference tournament.  The first tie breaker in standings is the results of the head to head game between two teams.  Louisville had beaten Stanford, but lost to Cal, so needed Cal to win this game, leaving the last place tie between Stanford and Louisville, allowing Louisville to advance with the tie breaker.

Alas, Stanford took the win in the game, 3-1, putting them in, at worst, sole possession of 7th place, but more likely in a tie with Wake Forest for 6th place (2-5 Wake plays 5-2 Virginia later today).  Regardless, that leaves Cal and Louisville tied for 8th.  And with Cal having the tie breaker head-to-head, that leaves Louisville out in the cold for the conference tournament.

                                                           (Use my chair...it's OK!)

With an overall record below .500, Louisville is ineligible for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, definitively wrapping the season for the Cards.

On the Soccer side of things, the team played Clemson to a scoreless draw yesterday.  With regular season play in the ACC being wrapped, UofL ends up 12th in the standings, considerably short of the cut to make the ridiculously small six team tournament draw.

The team's overall record of 7-6-5 does, technically, leave them eligible for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but with an RPI ranking of 62, that's not going to happen.

For what it's worth, the Cards showed some strong defense in the game yesterday, with Erynn Floyd recording six saves in the 90 minutes of play.

The offense did put some pressure on Clemson, particularly Mackenzie Geigle who had two shots on goal in the final minutes of the game, but nothing was able to break through.

Both teams will now start looking towards spring exhibition play, with an eye towards development of players and tactics for next season.

Volleyball Gets an Extra Rest Day

The typical volleyball schedule, particularly during conference play, sees games on Friday and Sunday, but this week has been and continues to be a bit different for the Cards.

This week is the week that the Cards play their ACC "travel partner", Notre Dame.  The league office saw fit to schedule travels partners with "home and home" arrangements this year, and to make those home and home exchanges happen in the same week.  In past years, the home and home involved a random extra Wednesday match somewhere in the middle of the conference season, and then a late season match.

The Cards took the opportunity to rest Charitie Luper during the Wednesday match, giving Payton Peterson her first career start, which she took great advantage of with 9 kills, a service ace, a block and a half, and five digs in LNFCU arena.

So Louisville, instead of playing the normal Friday+Sunday schedule this weekend, gets an extra day of rest after the mid-week match, and will head up to South Bend for the second half of the home and home tomorrow at 3pm.

Basketball Teams

Yes, plural.  While the basketball season doesn't get started until Monday, we do have a couple of tidbits on teams of local interest.

The Cardinals are in Paris France, exploring the city of light.  Social media placed them at the Louvre yesterday, where they were certainly sporting bigger smiles than the Mona Lisa.  They'll have the weekend to explore still, though I'm sure they're getting some practice time is as well before their Monday game against UCLA. And they're dining at the Eifel Tower tonight...something that has to be on most people's "if I only could" list...

Perhaps less cool than a trip to Paris, or maybe moreso, depending on your mindset, I ran across much of the Bellarmine Women's Basketball team yesterday while I was early voting at Immanuel UCC church on Taylorsville Road (just down the road, and shorter lines than at Bowman Field yesterday, also the church that our wonderful photographer Jared attends).  They were there, and also apparently had a contingent at Bowman Field, to assist with the voting location in whatever way they could.  They primarily were arrayed at the stairs from the parking lot down to the level where the voting is setup.  There are accessible ramps, but they do take you a bit out of the way, so the Bellarmine folks were assisting folks that were perhaps a bit uncomfortable with the steps to negotiate them.  Good deeds by a good team that we should be proud to have representing our city along with the Cards.

I was informed by Assistant Coach, and UofL alumnae, Mo Reid that Bellarmine also begins their season on Monday night at 6:30 at Knights Hall on the Bellarmine's campus.  Their opponent will be Indiana University SouthEast, which is also, of course, also a Louisville area team.  I also go the chance to be meet Head Coach Chancellor Dugan, which was a pleasure.

Volleyball falls to NC State...People Get Ready! -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

PACK SWEEPS WIDE-NETTERS IN THREE

Without the services on second-leading kill artist Janelle Jenkins for the second game in a row, the Cards Volleyball team fell at the KFC YUM! Center last night to North Carolina State 23-25, 20-25, 23-25. Still no official word on what is going on with the red-shirt Senior outside hitter...who was second team all-ACC in 2015.

Anne Kordes, Louisville head Volleyball coach, commented on the loss:

"I'm proud of Tess Clark and her ability to stay consistent. We are dealing with the loss of Janelle Jenkins and having to tweak our lineup. In doing so, we hurt our serve receive. I liked our push back in game three...but it was too late. Bottom line is, we are in a tough situation and have to adjust to it because it's sink or swim. We will figure it out. We are all in this together -- players, coaches and staff."

In a first set that had several lead changes, the Cards found themselves with a 22-21 lead late...but the WolfPack responded with a 4-1 run to end the game. UofL fell behind early in the second set, managed to tie the contest a couple of times...but a 7-2 NC State run gave them a 16-10 run that the Cards could not over come. After the break, the Cards looked to be on their way to a win, leading 17-11 in the third set, but UNC rallied to tie it at 18-18. The Cards battled back to take a 21-19 lead but fell victim to a closing 6-2 run from the visitors from Raleigh, NC to end the match.

Louisville (6-11, 1-6) will need a short memory. UNC (14-2, 6-0) visits the Yum! on Sunday. The TarHeels are ranked #8 in the nation and tied atop the ACC standings with Florida State. Game time is 1 p.m.

DOING THE BELKNAP HOP AGAIN!

Another busy weekend ahead on the UofL campus coming up...Football plays Duke tonight at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium at 7 p.m. The event is a "blackout" so...you know what to wear.

We'll dash out of the Crescent Hill Radio studios tomorrow after the broadcast of THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR (11 a.m. on WCHQ 100.9 FM) to head to Trager Stadium and catch the 11-3 Louisville Field Hockey squad do battle with ACC foe North Carolina...who stands at 11-2. They take to the turf at 1 p.m. in this one. North Carolina is #3 in the nation and the Cardinal Stick Girls come in ranked #7...so this should be a goodie!

Field Hockey comes back on Sunday with a noon pass-back against James Madison Sunday and Louisville Volleyball will take the Denny Crum Court an hour later for the aforementioned match against UNC. Worldwide will probably head downtown and I'll do a Weekend at Trager II appearance.

(Seems like we've got a lot of Carolina in the city this weekend with Duke, North Carolina and NC State here...wasn't that a TV show?? OK, I was close...)

Out on the road are WSOC...who visits Virginia Tech Sunday and men's Soccer...they're in (you guessed it...Carolina) to play Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.

Climb in, buckle up and hold on...a busy weekend and we'll get all the news to you in typical CARDINAL COUPLE fashion.

S.S.C. HAS ANNUAL BASKETBALL NIGHT

Sportsmen's Supper Club was the place to be Thursday night...with Jeff Walz, Scotty Davenport, Chancellor Dugan and Michael Bowden addressing the meeting at the University Club.

Walz got the evening off to a rollicking start...sharing stories on players, fans, his busy schedule and the daily occurrences in the life of a head coach. Who knew he had stand-up comedian talents? Coach had the crowd rolling with laughter as he shared some personal insights and glimpses into his world.

Chancellor Dugan, head women's basketball coach at Bellarmine, took the podium next and recapped their outstanding 2015-16 season. The Knights are loaded for bear against this season...with 12 players returning. Chancellor also talked about the addition of Candyce Bingham to her coaching staff.

Michael Bowden, director of men's basketball operations for UofL was next, He gave us the breakdown on Pitino's roster for the upcoming season and also talked about how he got the position and what all it entails. He also related a great Pitino story that emphasized just how hard-working and driven Rick is.

Scotty Davenport ended the evening. They began practice this morning at 5 a.m. (no, that isn't a mis-print) as they usually do when they take to Knights Gym for the first time. If you've never heard Scotty speak, you're really missing out. Informative, comical, thought-provoking, inspirational and dedicated...Mr. Davenport is a true Louisville legend. He expects another huge season for his Bellarmine basketball squad.

Another great evening at Sportsmen's Supper Club! They are currently accepting applications for membership. Check them out on Facebook for more information. Sportsmen's Supper Club of Louisville, Inc.

#12 Field Hockey wins at Miami (OH)...C.B. back in college coaching ranks...Evans down to three -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

SECOND HALF SURGE SENDS FLOCK PAST REDHAWKS

Freshman Minout Mink lifted Louisville out of a scoreless battle with Miami (OH) yesterday and Lotta Kahlert added an insurance goal with 13 minutes to play as the #12 Louisville Field Hockey team improved to 2-0 with a win on the road yesterday against the MAC foes. Miami drops to 1-2 on the season.

It was a tale of two halves, according to UofL head coach Justine Sowry:

"Miami is a very good team and they dictated play in the first half. We were undisciplined in executing our game plan and became internal. Our second half was much different and we started to control the tempo by putting them under pressure and keeping better possession of the ball...the positive is that we finished the game well against a very good opponent."

After a strong defensive first half by both squads, the Cards capitalized on a penalty corner just four minutes into second half action. Mink fired a shot past Miami goalkeeper Alyssa Xavier to break the drought...the UofL freshman from Haaksbergen, Netherlands getting her third goal on the season.

Imagine that, a goalie named Xavier playing for Miami...

Louisville stayed with the international connection at the 57:18 mark when Kahlert, a senior from Hamburg, Germany received a feed from Nicole Woods (out of Beverly, MA) and got her first goal of the season. The Cards had nine shots in the final half, up from their five in the first 35 minutes.

The Flock continued their strong defensive start to the season...they held I.U. to one goal earlier in the week in a 5-1 romp...Cardinal goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran, a sophomore from Larne, Northern Ireland. had one save in the contest and the Cards held the RedHawks to just four shots in 70 minutes.

Next up, Brown comes to Louisville for a Saturday, 11 a.m. match. We hope they bring some other colors with them, as well...

CANDYCE BINGHAM RETURNS TO COLLEGE COACHING

Everybody remembers C.B., right? Part of the squad that took Louisville to their first-ever Final Four WBB appearance. "Mom" to the squad (while Angel was "the crazy aunt...). The force inside.

She's back! After a year at Manual High School, her alma mater, where she helped lead the Crimsons to the 7th Region title and Sweet Sixteen berth...Candyce Bingham has been named as an women's basketball assistant coach at Bellarmine University.

Head coach Chancellor Dugan couldn't be more excited:

" Candyce brings experience to us with playing in the national championship, coaching in the national championship, playing overseas and her Division I coaching experience. Her wealth of knowledge will be valuable for us."

For Bingham, the yellow brick road stops on Newburg Road.

" I think everybody at some point wants to get back home. Louisville is definitely home for me. It's exciting to have family and friends here who are able to come to the games and be supportive. Family means a lot to me."

Dugan can relate to that. A Louisville Sacred Heart graduate, she spent four years at EKU as a player and eight years as a coach at USI (Southern Indiana). That parlayed into 13 years as the head coach at FAU (Florida Atlantic University). When the chance came to return to Louisville, though, Dugan jumped at the chance to take over the Knights program.

Bingham is replacing Crystal Kelly, another Sacred Heart grad who had a fantastic college career at WKU and three WNBA years, who accepted an assistant coaching job at Tennessee Tech in May.

Shannon Litton, who coached with Dugan at USI and attented Morehead St. remains on staff. Dugan has built a coaching staff that is well-qualified to take the Knights back for another GLVC title and berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

With Bingham on the bench, Coach Dugan just might be tempted to call her name and send her into the fray. In any event, the wealth of coaching experience will be a boon to Bellarmine in the upcoming season. The Knights return a strong roster that includes nine players from the Louisville metro area.

EVANS DOWN TO THREE

2017 WBB prospect Dana Evans is down to three in her college choices and Louisville has made the list!

Along with Purdue and Tennessee, the Cards are in the final process in her decision-making. Evans, out of West Side High School in Gary, IN. is the #2 ranked guard in the 2017 class...according to ESPN.

She made her official visit to the Belknap Campus on Saturday and announced her final three via Twitter yesterday.

Jeff Walz just keeps rolling them in...

Coach Walz optimistic about upcoming season

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Jeff Walz's enthusiasm about Lady Cards this year something to take hold of.

- Soccer, Volleyball and Field Hockey hit the highway this weekend.

- Yaste article later today.

- Next in the Choose Your Favorite Cardinal womens athlete.

Walz looks forward to Lady Cards 2012-13 season

In a talk before a packed Sportsmen's Supper Club meeting Thursday night at the University Club, Jeff Walz spoke of optimism and the hopes for good results for his 2012-13 Lady Cards basketball team.

" The girls are practicing hard and with enthusiasm as we get ready for the season. Their hard work over the summer is showing and we're excited, as a coaching staff, on what they'll produce this year."

He has every reason to look forward to the upcoming season. Returning an experienced, veteran and talented team...the Lady Cards have been ranked as high as #6 in preseason polls. Add in the return of 2010-11 stalwarts Tia Gibbs and Monique Reid and the picture looks rosy...indeed...for the University of Louisville women's basketball squad.

There is one thing Coach Walz requests of the Lady Cards fan base, though. Fill the KFC YUM! Center when his team faces Texas A&M on Friday, November 9th.

" We'd love to see a sold out crowd in the KFC Yum Center when we play Texas A&M in less than a month. You have no idea what effect that would have on our girls...and I hope that we can sell this game out."

The team deserves no less than that. Louisville women's basketball has come of age over the last couple of years and crowds of over 10,000 are commonplace for Louisville home games now. Let's push it to the next level against the Aggies and put 23,000 in the YUM that Friday night. Season ticket packages are still available and you and your family and friends can catch 17 home games for the ridiculously low price of an evening of upscale dining.

And, we bet you'll have a great time. Call the UofL ticket office at (502) 852-5151 and get on board for what looks to be a rollicking good time watching your Lady Cards in hoops!

And tell 'em Coach Walz and CARDINAL COUPLE sent you...

Dugan comes from FAU to take over
the Lady Knights.
Also speaking at the dinner were Bellarmine basketball coaches Scotty Davenport and new WBB head coach Chancellor Dugan. From what we heard last night, both BU hoops teams are expecting great things out of their upcoming seasons.

Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball take to the road this weekend.

If there's a scarcity of ladies on the Belknap Campus this upcoming weekend, it's because the Field Hockey, Volleyball and Women's Soccer teams have hit the highway to participate in BIG EAST and other action.

Women's soccer does the Jersey tour with games at Seton Hall and Rutgers. Field Hockey stops at Rutgers and Wake Forest over the next few days. And Anne Kordes' Volleyball squad hits St. John's and UConn.

Keep it on CARDINAL COUPLE for updates and results on your favorite UofL women's sports teams!

NEXT in the Choose Your Favorite Cardinal Women's Athlete

OK, it was probably an undeserved mismatch for Krissie Brandenburg, but someone had to go up against Shoni in the contest since there are no byes.

The elder Schimmel wins easily and advances to the Great Eight.

Our next duel could go right down to the wire. We pit softball's Caralisa Connell against soccer's Christine Exeter.

CONNELL, one of the starting pitchers on last year's excellent 55-5 squad and the only returning pitcher from last year with time in the Ulmer Stadium circle, will lead the Cards into play as the probable "ace" of the staff. Her record last year for the Cards was an eye-popping 19-1. She had a great fall exhibition rotation and Sandy Pearsall and the staff expect great things out of her in the upcoming season.

EXETER was the mainstay and leading scorer on the Louisville women's soccer team last season and has performed well for the Cards again this season. She was selected pre-season ALL-BIG EAST and...despite a late start in joining the Cards because of Team Canada commitments...has given Louisville productive minutes on the turf since her return.

Two players enter, one exits as the winner. You can vote over on the "infamous" left side of the site through Monday.
