Walz looks forward to Lady Cards 2012-13 season

In a talk before a packed Sportsmen's Supper Club meeting Thursday night at the University Club, Jeff Walz spoke of optimism and the hopes for good results for his 2012-13 Lady Cards basketball team.

" The girls are practicing hard and with enthusiasm as we get ready for the season. Their hard work over the summer is showing and we're excited, as a coaching staff, on what they'll produce this year."

He has every reason to look forward to the upcoming season. Returning an experienced, veteran and talented team...the Lady Cards have been ranked as high as #6 in preseason polls. Add in the return of 2010-11 stalwarts Tia Gibbs and Monique Reid and the picture looks rosy...indeed...for the University of Louisville women's basketball squad.

There is one thing Coach Walz requests of the Lady Cards fan base, though. Fill the KFC YUM! Center when his team faces Texas A&M on Friday, November 9th.

" We'd love to see a sold out crowd in the KFC Yum Center when we play Texas A&M in less than a month. You have no idea what effect that would have on our girls...and I hope that we can sell this game out."

The team deserves no less than that. Louisville women's basketball has come of age over the last couple of years and crowds of over 10,000 are commonplace for Louisville home games now. Let's push it to the next level against the Aggies and put 23,000 in the YUM that Friday night. Season ticket packages are still available and you and your family and friends can catch 17 home games for the ridiculously low price of an evening of upscale dining.

And, we bet you'll have a great time. Call the UofL ticket office at (502) 852-5151 and get on board for what looks to be a rollicking good time watching your Lady Cards in hoops!

And tell 'em Coach Walz and CARDINAL COUPLE sent you...

Dugan comes from FAU to take over
the Lady Knights.
Also speaking at the dinner were Bellarmine basketball coaches Scotty Davenport and new WBB head coach Chancellor Dugan. From what we heard last night, both BU hoops teams are expecting great things out of their upcoming seasons.

Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball take to the road this weekend.

If there's a scarcity of ladies on the Belknap Campus this upcoming weekend, it's because the Field Hockey, Volleyball and Women's Soccer teams have hit the highway to participate in BIG EAST and other action.

Women's soccer does the Jersey tour with games at Seton Hall and Rutgers. Field Hockey stops at Rutgers and Wake Forest over the next few days. And Anne Kordes' Volleyball squad hits St. John's and UConn.

Keep it on CARDINAL COUPLE for updates and results on your favorite UofL women's sports teams!

OK, it was probably an undeserved mismatch for Krissie Brandenburg, but someone had to go up against Shoni in the contest since there are no byes.

The elder Schimmel wins easily and advances to the Great Eight.

Our next duel could go right down to the wire. We pit softball's Caralisa Connell against soccer's Christine Exeter.

CONNELL, one of the starting pitchers on last year's excellent 55-5 squad and the only returning pitcher from last year with time in the Ulmer Stadium circle, will lead the Cards into play as the probable "ace" of the staff. Her record last year for the Cards was an eye-popping 19-1. She had a great fall exhibition rotation and Sandy Pearsall and the staff expect great things out of her in the upcoming season.

EXETER was the mainstay and leading scorer on the Louisville women's soccer team last season and has performed well for the Cards again this season. She was selected pre-season ALL-BIG EAST and...despite a late start in joining the Cards because of Team Canada commitments...has given Louisville productive minutes on the turf since her return.

Two players enter, one exits as the winner. You can vote over on the "infamous" left side of the site through Monday.
