WBB faces Boise St Tonight -- Jared Plays It -- MSOC Eliminated -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FACES BOISE ST TONIGHT

It may seem like it's been since forever, but, in reality it's been 10 days since the University of Louisville women's basketball team has had a game.

They are in Boise, ID. tonight to face the 3-0 Boise State women's basketball team for a contest that starts at 9 p.m. (EST).  

If the name sounds familiar, the Cards faced the Broncos to start their march to the NCAA Final Four with a first round 74-42 win against them in the KFC YUM! Center on March 16th, 2018 in first round NCAA Tournament action.

Louisville used a strong 27-8 third quarter to pull away from a 32-22 halftime lead in that one. Sam Fuehring and Kylee Shook led the Cards in scoring with 14 points each in the 32-point blowout, Jaz Jones and Bionca Dunham rounded out the double figure scorers that night with 10 points each. Jazzy, with her hustle and skills, could have a big night tonight. 

Both squads return four starters from last season. For B.S.U., the start of the 2018-19 season has been quite successful. They opened with a 74-63 win over Cal State Northridge, followed that up with a 91-46 drubbing of Southern Oregon University and rolled past Northwest Christian University 93-26 on Friday night. In the win over NCU, the Broncos led 57-7 at the half and ended up 11-22 from beyond the arc. 

All their wins have been on their home court, the stylishly-named Taco Bell Arena on campus. The Broncos will spend the month of November there with Louisville being the fourth of six home games before the friendly fans. 

HOW IT CAME ABOUT

Jeff Walz and his staff like to invite teams that are playing against them in the NCAA Tournament out for a "bite and a drink" when they come to town. Boise State's staff took them up on the offer. We're pretty sure Coach picks up the tab as well, which is doubly nice. 

We'll have to come up with a "Cardinal Couple" squad and qualify for the NCAA Tournament...so we can get in on the "Walz Is Buying" bonanza. (Hey, we got height with Jared, Case and me).

WHO SHOULD WE LOOK OUT FOR? 

A'Shanti Coleman

Marta Hermida leads the Broncos in scoring with a 13.7 p.p.g in the Broncos three outings. She's a senior from Madrid, Spain.  She had nine points against the Cards in their previous meeting. A'Shanti Coleman, a 6'2" red shirt junior forward who transferred in from Arizona, has produced a nine-point average so far . She played 19 minutes but did not score against Louisville back in March. Joyce Harrell is second in scoring with 13.0 a game and leads in rebounding with 7.7 a night. Back in March, she got two points in ten minutes against the Cards.

Riley Lupfer is the third double-figure scorer for B.S.U with 10.0 per contest. She's a 5'9" guard that played 33 minutes against Louisville in the NCAA Tournament and gathered nine points. Ellie Woerner is a 6'0"red-shirt junior guard who was previously at Portland. In 19 minutes against Louisville, she totaled two points. 



FOR THE CARDS

Third quarter romps have been the standard in the opening two games for Louisville and it was as well when the two schools faced in March. We'll hope Asia likes tacos and can throw a few treys in the cylinder against Boise. Both Kylee Shook and Bionca Dunham had good games against the Broncs back in March and we'd like to see a repeat of that. Sam Fuehring should have a field day inside against the foe and we'll look to her for a big night. Dana Evans' quickness won't catch B.S.U off guard...she played 24 minutes and had seven points back in the spring...but will they be able to stop the speedy sophomore?

PLAY IT, JARED! 

We all know how talented the youngest member of the Cardinal Couple "A" team is with his photography and writing skills. Did you know he's also excellent with the euphonium? 

The baritone brass instrument looks like a "mini" tuba...and Jared has mastered it, as well. He played in the UofL marching back and also currently plays with a couple of orchestras and musical ensembles around town. 

Sunday afternoon was a highlight for him. He was asked to play the National Anthem before the start of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship game between North Carolina and Maryland. Hear/see the performance at the link below:

He also holds down a 40 hour a week job. It's rumored he sleeps, we just don't know when. He was also seen later on Sunday night banging the drum and yelling with a cheer group at the Louisville men's soccer game.

We pleased as punch and proud of "Mr Anderson Jared" and, if we can get him in the studio with the euphonium...maybe he can play THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR show-opening music one Saturday morning! 


LOUISVILLE MSOC FALLS TO SPARTIE ON SUNDAY

A tough loss for the guys Sunday Night in second round NCAA Tournament action at Lynn Stadium -- falling to Michigan State 2-1 in overtime. 

Louisville fell behind early but tied the contest with 12 minutes left in regulation on a goal that was reviewed by the officials. A rough way to end the season for Ken Lolla's guys...who were #4 in the nation. The Cards end the 2018 campaign with a 11-5-3 record.

Hisses to the post-game behavior of the Spartans. Starting a fight in the end zone after the game-winning goal is a  pure example of "no-class" whatsoever. And, the refs just stood there and watched it.

Amanda Green and Molly Sauer Interviews -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cardinal Couple Sits Down With Amanda Green and Molly Sauer

Have you ever wondered what candy players prefer: M&Ms or Skittles?  What about either Beyonce or Rihanna for musical favorites?  Yesterday, Paulie and I took some time to ask these questions to UofL volleyball stars Amanda Green and Molly Sauer. It was the VolleyCards first day of practice and we wanted to talk to these two and discuss their overseas adventures and competition over the summer, review the past season and look ahead to the 2018 season.

A special thanks goes out to Dani Busboom Kelly, head coach of the UofL Volleyball team and Nancy Worely, associate sports information director of Volleyball for setting the interviews up.

2017 has not yet been added

The questions about snacks and music were not the only reasons we went down to Cardinal Arena, of course. Both Green and Sauer spent time this summer on Collegiate National teams. Sauer visited China about two months ago while Green was part of the CNT (Collegiate National Team) coached by Dani Busboom Kelly that visited Europe recently.


Molly Sauer has spent her entire career wearing a red and black uniform.  The Louisville native is a graduate of Assumption High School where such players as Katie George and Alexis Hamilton also hail.  Our libero in the #1 jersey has played a key role every year.



Amanda Green transferred in from Marquette and enters her redshirt junior year.  Hailing from Skokie, Ill., Green joined the Cardinals when Coach Kelly took the reigns as head coach.  She immediately made an impact on the court and wears #18, a popular number in the NFL among Colts fans.

When asked about what they got most of their time across the oceans,  the two teammates had different answers.  Molly and the CNT in China spent some time working with elementary and middle school volleyball players, having the chance to interact and communicate with them despite the language barrier.  In Europe, Green enjoyed the opportunity to continue playing volleyball with some of the best players around the country and improve her skills.




There are nine players on this year's roster that were not part of the 2017 team.  Both seniors gave us some input on the new faces and each listed two incoming players to keep an eye out for this year.  Three are incoming freshman while one is a sophomore transferring returning to her hometown where she attended Mercy High School.

These dual interviews are something you do not want to miss.  The interviews contain a healthy mix of fun with the CNT recap and 2018 preview.

Fall Sports Media Day

Big doings today down on the Belknap Campus. Representatives of four squads-- plus lots of media will swarm the Lynn Stadium offices for the Fall Sports Media Day.  Field hockey, volleyball, women's soccer and cross-country will all be present for the event.  Due to its size the football media day is its own event this coming Saturday.

Have you seen this man?

Paulie and Worldwide Jeff McAdams will be in attendance to hear from  coaches Sowry, Kelly, Ferguson-Dayes and Dale Cowper -- plus selected players from each squad.  Besides interviews with the trio of coaches you can expect to hear from a few players from each team as well.

These media days (they hold one also for spring sports and women's basketball conducts one also prior to the start of their season) are a great opportunity to catch up what's been going on with the programs since their seasons ended, things the players and coaches will be working on for upcoming season and any additions to staff or roster.

We've also built a little fun into the player segment. In past interviews, we found out that Molly Sauer loves a particular type of bread stick with her pasta, we learned that Jordan McNary was considering a run for Kentucky Governor, discovered that Arica Carter has a future as Paulie's assistant interview specialist, it was revealed what shampoo Worldwide uses and we've been a part of many other humorous and delightful tales and revelations.

Yeah. We're a little goofy at times. But...we have fun with it and the players seem to enjoy it. We hope you do, too.

I won't be in the studio Saturday for The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour on WCHQ 100.9 FM but you can experience the other three knuckleheads back at the Magnificent Majestic Media Mansion on Mellwood (or whatever this week's name is). Be sure to listen at 11 a.m. or watch them live on Facebook Live.

Don Mueller, a New York physicist, has composed a song about the decline of "Papa John" Schnatter. The musical section is the old "Popeye The SailorMan" tune. The vocals quite interesting.

Maybe it's time just to put the Schnatter ordeal on the shelf and move on to UofL fall sports and positive-type things. A lot of potentially great things ahead for Cardinal Athletics. From the words of another song:

Pat Summitt "struggling" as family prepares for worst -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

NO OFFICIAL STATEMENT YET ON 64 YEAR OLD COACH

We normally try to present the joy and excitement of UofL women's athletics here at CARDINAL COUPLE, but today we'll reflect on the sad news out of Knoxville, TN.


Reports are that Pat Summitt is "struggling" in a Knoxville nursing home and family and some former players were with her Saturday, preparing to make public statements on her conditions when necessary. 

An unnamed source reported:

"I don't think anybody knows whether she'll last a day, a month or a year." 

Robin Roberts tweeted Saturday morning: 

"Hope you don't mind that I ask for prayers for a dear friend close to the end of her journey. Would mean a lot to her fam. Peace be w/you." 

Summitt coached the Lady Vols for 38 years...starting in 1974. She won 1098 games and 34 SEC Championships. 

I met Summitt in 2010. We hadn't been doing CARDINAL COUPLE very long...not quite a year yet. She and her Vols had come to the KFC YUM! Center to open the Louisville women's basketball 2010-11 season. They defeated the Cards 63-50...a freshman guard by the name of Meghan Simmons had an eye-popping performance for UT to lead them to the win....leading the Vols to a closing 19-6 run. This was before Summitt knew she had the dreaded, unforgiving onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.  

She entered the KFC YUM! Center media room and had a bit of difficulty climbing up to the podium. She joked about that...remarking that she wasn't getting any younger. She commented on several different things...spending more time on the podium that visiting coaches usually do. She had this to say about Jeff Walz: 

"He's excellent. He's really, really good and he's going to continue winning and he's going to continue to get great players. I think he does things the right way and I'd like to try and continue to keep the series going." 

After all the interviews had ended, I went to the Vols locker room to see if I could get a bit more from the legendary coach before they left the arena. I got there just in time. She was actually standing outside the locker room, near the floor entrance...gazing one last time at the interior of the KFC YUM! Center. She offered before she headed to the bus:



" I hope you can fill this place like it was tonight each and every game. Places like this are good for women's college basketball. We really like going to places like this, to play in environments like this. It makes us work hard and try to find a way to win. If we lose, we go home and learn from it. I'd love to play in here again. I'm not sure what the schedule looks like in the future...but tonight was special." 

It was the last time Pat Summitt coached in the KFC YUM! Center. I hope I can remember that sight for a long time...this veteran, heralded, wonderful coach gazing out with almost a childlike, innocent wonder into our arena.

Noles continue womens sports dominance over Cards - - V Ball falls 3-1 -- Saturday Cardinal Couple

FSU defeats Louisville 3-1 in KFC YUM! Center
. 

Louisville Volleyball dropped a match to #5 Florida State in ACC Volleyball last night in the KFC YUM! Center three sets to one. The Cards fall to the Noles' 21-25, 26-24, 18,25, 21-25. 

The first set was tied 14-14 before FSU broke away on a late 5-0 run to set the Cards down. Louisville rallied to win the second set, coming back from a 22-24 deficit to win 26-24. Following half-time, it was all FSU...bombing the Cards 18-25 in the third and holding Louisville at bay 25-21 in the final. 

The Cards were led by Laura Blab with 12 kills. Katie George was spectacular in passing again. Louisville just isn't quite ACC
level ready for domination this season in volleyball the way they were in the AAC or Big East.

FSU, on the other hand, fits the ACC nicely and has become the school so far most adept at handing out punishment to our women's sports programs. The 'Noles rolled over women's soccer last week 6-0. 

Break up the 'Noles.

Volleyball returns to the YUM today for a visit from Notre Dame at 2 p.m.

Sunday Cardinal Couple -- Whatever happened to ??

- Whatever happened to...


We had an inquiry a couple of weeks ago on whatever happened to a UofL WBB player that left the program. We decided to revive the "Whatever Happened To?" segment we used to do here.  Here ya go with our first installment:

POLLY HARRINGTON   5'11"  WING 


Harrington was a part of the 2010 incoming class after a year of junior college. Her 2010-11 stats as a Card were 16 games played, 5.1 minutes per game, 1.8 ppg. She decided to transfer in April of 2011...looking for more playing time...and she found it at South Dakota. She started every game in her two years there and was the Summit League Conference Tournament MVP as a senior in 2014. SD lost the Stanford in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Harrington averaged 12.4 ppg and 5.6 rebounds her senior season. 

The Summit League has an interesting makeup...

Harrington also received a fair share of national attention when her fiancee proposed to her during the season...

VERMILLION, SD

South Dakota senior wing Polly Harrington will remember her final game at the Dakota Dome for the rest of her life, and it has nothing to do with the 16 points she scored in USD's 99-88 loss to rival SD State. 

With the team apparently honoring her on the court after the game, Harrington's boyfriend snuck up behind her, dropped to a knee and proposed to her. A stunned Harrington said "Yes!" to the delight of the crowd and her teammates.
