Cardinals WSOC falls to FSU 2-0 -- FH and VolleyCards matchup previews -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Good morning readers, happy weekend.

It’s an extra happy one for me as I will be going out of town this weekend for a bucket list trip...  It's something I’ve been wanting to do for over 10 years. I figured it was time to make this thing happen after thinking about it for so long. If you’re curious, its actually for the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I learned there are two balloons from the Louisville area that will be in attendance for the event. I can't wait to check out the southwest United States!!!

Meanwhile, on this side of the country, the Cardinals are competing in a couple conference matches today. The #5 Field Hockey squad kicks off at 6 p.m. at Trager Stadium against Wake Forest and is available on the ACC Network. The #6 VolleyCards are heading down to North Carolina for a couple matches with those blue teams we don’t care for. Women's soccer also hosted #2 FSU at Lynn Stadium last night in a downpour.  Lets get right into the Cardinal coverage....

WSOC vs FSU recap

UofL played its match against the top ranked Florida State Seminoles on Thursday evening despite the unabated forecast.  Some would probably argue that the rain gives the Cards more of an even matchup with the Seminoles.   There were some moments in the first half that looked like it should've been a goal for FSU, one in particular I can't understand how they didn't find the back of the net other than maybe the playing field and or ball being super wet.

It was scoreless at the half where the Noles were able to get 6 shots off while the Cards only 2.

Florida State was able to score in the 66th minute on a shot from the right side by Taylor Huff.   Erynn Floyd was in goal for the Cards and looked like it was an attempt to punch the ball back out of the area but probably not a good idea to try it when its raining... the punch did not land and the ball slipped right by her for an FSU goal to make it 1-0.

10 minutes later, the Noles did it again.   Maria Alagoa scored for the Noles to make it 2-0 with just about 13 minutes left.  The Cardinals seemed to run out of gas after almost 2 hours in the rain as the Seminoles scored twice in the final 25ish minutes of play.

I mean, they are the #2 ranked team in the country and Louisville made it interesting for the first 60 minutes.

Louisville finished with only 3 shot attempts 1 on goal while FSU had 10.

Ava Moore leads the Wake attack with two goals and four points while Ellie Todd carries a 1.81 goals against average.

About UNC Volleyball

North Carolina is 7-6 overall this season and 1-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are coming off three straight losses in conference, after being swept by Pittsburgh at home and Florida State on the road before heading to Miami and falling in four sets. Mike Schall is in his first year as head coach after being an assistant on staff since 2018.

Outside hitter Mabrey Shaffmaster leads the team in kills (164) and points (190.5), while libero Maddy May anchors the defense with a team-high 186 digs on the year.
