Floyd Street Happenings and More -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Between travels and other events this weekend our writing schedule is all out of whack. Jeff covered for Case yesterday and Case was hopeful to write today, but ran into unexpected travel detours. Poor Paulie is still recovering from being at football (rather sober it appeared from my perspective). Daryl is in mourning over that improbable UofL FB loss...

Floyd Street Happenings

It's a good day to be down on Floyd Street with two in-season sports and one out-of-season sports playing. On top of that, we have another team on the road in a big game.

The first team to start their Sunday activities on campus is Louisville Softball. Ulmer Stadium opens its gates for the final time this fall season as the Cards play their Red and Black Intra-Scrimmage as well as recognize the alumni in town.

I got a chance to talk to Coach Holly Aprile in the tunnel at Cardinal Stadium yesterday and she is excited for this year's team as well as all the adjustments they have been making with A LOT of new faces including a new assistant coach and new volunteer assistant coach. I did run into the ever popular Celene Funke, who is in town from Wisconsin to see the Cards play.

Then, when 1:00 rolls around today, we see two more teams start up. #3 Louisville Volleyball hopes to extend their win streak to 16 matches as they square off against Syracuse. Syracuse is 14-3 on the year and 3-2 in conference play following a three-set loss to Notre Dame on Friday. The Cards are 25-4 all time against the Orange. Former Louisville Volleyball head coach Leonid Yelin has been with the Orange for nearly a decade.

I ran into Aiko Jones, Amaya Tillman, and Jamie Vasilou in the tunnel yesterday too. They are having an absolute blast this season and are just taking things one match at a time. Aiko mentioned that she was pleased that Friday's match was quick enough that she could pick up food on the way home before most restaurants had closed for the night.

The other 1:00 game on Floyd Street is Louisville Women's Soccer, who welcomes NC State to Lynn Stadium. The Wolfpack enter the match 5-6-2 this year and are 1-4 in conference play. With a win, the Cards can even the all-time series at 4-4-1. A win also puts the Cards at 12 points in the ACC. The ACC Tournament shortened from eight teams to six teams this year (stupid if you ask me) so every point you can get is crucial.

Although I did not get a chance to talk with them, Gabby Kouzelos and Sarah Hernandez were also in the tunnel at football briefly. I'm sure they're trying to stay focused for this match after a rough loss at Notre Dame earlier in the week.

Normally, I'd be running back-and-forth between games trying to cover as much as possible, but performing in a concert sidelines me for the day. After nearly two years since our last concert due to a hiatus from COVID-19, it's exciting to be back in action!

Non-Floyd Street Happenings

#3 Louisville Field Hockey is not at home tomorrow, but has arguably the biggest match of the day. The Cards are up in Ann Arbor for a noon start against #2 Michigan. The Wolverines topped the Cards in the Final Four last year to advance to the NCAA Championship and Justine Sowry's squad is hungry for revenge.

The Wolverines are 10-0 on the year with six of those wins coming against teams who were ranked at the time of the match. Averaging 4.30 goals per match, the Wolverines love to score and UofL will need to be able to slow that offensive attack while finding a way to post a multi-goal performance themselves.

No members of UofL Field Hockey were present at the football game as they had already safely landed in Big Ten country.

Despite being a #2 vs #3 match-up, this game is only on Big Ten+ at $14.95/month. Why a game like this is only on an online pay-per-view option is a mystery that even Scooby Doo and the Mystery Gang can't figure out. There's no reason this shouldn't be aired on TV, or a free online stream option at worst. Do better, Big Ten.

(No one is safe from the wandering Jared camera...)

I was absent from our weekly Cardinal Couple Radio Podcast yesterday, but Paulie, Jeff, and Daryl took the reins on this one. The gang discussed Volleyball, Field Hockey, Women's Soccer and more. Give a listen at the link below:
