Cards get ACC recognition -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

After a weekend that saw both Louisville Field Hockey and Women's Soccer score big wins on Floyd Street -- the ACC has taken notice and three Louisville women's sports student-athletes have received conference honors. For Louisville Women's Soccer, Emina Ekic has been named ACC Offensive Player of the Week and in Louisville Field Hockey, Mercedes Pastor was selected ACC Offensive Player of the Week and Meghan Schneider ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

The preseason All-ACC star was a part of all five Louisville goals this past week. Louisville defeated Syracuse 3-0 and Ekic had an assist and two goals against the Orange. In a 2-0 win over Boston College on Sunday, Ekic assisted on the Cards first goal and she scored the final goal in the match at Lynn Stadium.

Ekic, a senior, who attended Louisville Manual High School, has now been selected ACC Offensive Player of the Week three times in her time at Louisville.

She is second in the ACC in points (13) in 2020. The scoring for that is based on goals scored (two points) and she's had five of those. Ekic has three assists as well and receives one point for those.

Louisville women's soccer (3-1) was most recently ranked #13 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, one of seven ACC squads in the top 15 of the poll.

The Soccer Cards return to the pitch when they travel to Virginia next week for a Thursday, Oct 15th. battle against the Cavaliers.

The ACC Offensive Player of the Week goes to Mercedes Pastor for the second straight week in a row.

Pastor has the Cards second goal and the first assist of the match against the North Carolina TarHeels last Friday in Louisville 3-1 upset of the perennial powerhouse. She had an assist to help Louisville grab a 1-0 lead over Boston College in Louisville's 2-1 win on Sunday.

A senior who hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina...Pastor is a three-time All-ACC First Team selection for Louisville Field Hockey. Nicknamed "Mechi" she has scored 17 goals and recorded 10 assists in her three-year stint as a Cardinal student-athlete.

Meghan Schneider
was an integral part of a Louisville defensive that allowed just two goals last weekend. She's also a member of the Cards penalty corner unit and picked up assists against Boston College and UNC.

The senior from San Diego, CA also has a sister on the squad (Katie) who is a redshirt-junior.

Schneider's defensive work against 2019 NCAA leading scorer Erin Matson (UNC) on Friday was impressive. She held Matson to just one goal. Against Boston College, Meghan scored a goal to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.

Louisville Field Hockey (4-0) has completed their fall home slate of games and will travel to Winston Salem, NC this weekend for a coupe of matches against Wake Forest.

The Seattle Storm took the WNBA Finals playoff series last night with a convincing 92-59 win over the Las Vegas Aces.

Las Vegas had an early lead over the Storm, but behind Breanna Stewart, the Seattle squad came back to take a 23-21 first quarter lead over Las Vegas and outscored the Aces 69-38 in the remaining three quarters.

Louisville women's Basketball G.O.A.T. Angel McCoughtry saw 20 minutes of action in the final game of the season and had seven points for the Aces.

Stewart was one of four Seattle players in double figures and led all scorers with 26 points.

Have a wise Wednesday!

  1. Very nice honors for all three. I just have to wonder how much more impressive these records would be if the squads were playing a full season.

From what I saw,the Aces pretty much gave up after Seattle went on their early in the second quarter. It was a good season for them though. So happy for Angel.

  2. I'm going to miss the WNBA but women's college basketball isn't too far away.

What's going on with UOFL WBB these days?
