WBB Cards Host FSU -- Walz and Teeter Interviews -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Host FSU

It is going to be a late night with an 8:00 p.m. tip-off at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cards have their first true, tough ACC opponent with #17 Florida State visiting.

The Seminoles are 18-4 overall with a 7-4 mark in conference play.  So far, they have proven to be tough both on the road at 7-2, and against ranked opponents at 4-1.

Sue Semrau pilots the 'Noles. She's in her 23rd. year at FSU and has complied a 444-252 record in Tallahassee.

The Noles have shown to be tough on offense, averaging 74.3 points per game.  There is a trio of seniors averaging double-digit points in Kiah Gillespie (15.1), Nicki Ekhomu (14.8), and Nausia Woolfolk (14.5).  Gillespie is no stranger to double-doubles with nine, and recorded a triple-double against Michigan earlier in the year.  They have 307 assists on the year, averaging out to be nearly 14 per game on an average of 27 made baskets per game.

FSU also has a tough defense, surrendering 59.5 points per game.  That mark is good enough for fourth in the ACC.  They have held opponents to under .400 shooting from the field on the year and under .300 from tree-point range.  Their 96 blocks is 33 more than their opponents have recorded.

One positive note is that the Seminoles have not topped 90 points in any game this year.  However, they have allowed 70 or more just twice in a 74-70 win against St Johns and a 90-89 loss at Syracuse.

Louisville is 1-2 against FSU in their last three meetings including two years ago when the Seminoles ruined the Cards' unbeaten streak.  Overall, Louisville is 14-16 against Florida State but are 7-7 in Louisville.

The game is a Red Out and will be aired on ACC Network on tv.  Of course, you can always tune into 790 AM to hear Nick Curran and AJ call the game.  The next two games are on the road so this is a good chance to see them at home before their road trip.

The Walz presser is below. We did find out from it that Norika Konno experienced knee pain against Team USA, will sit out tonight against FSU and will undergo further evaluation to determine the cause of the discomfort.

COACH WALZ PRESSER

Coach Walz met with the media Wednesday to talk about the upcoming FSU game, recap things from the Team USA game and discuss awards bestowed upon Dana Evans and Hailey Van Lith.

At the end, he is asked about Norika Konno, but the question-asking guy is pretty inaudible, so Walz repeats her name.

You can hear his words below at the link:

LACROSSE INTERVIEW

Paulie and I will be heading to Cincinnati on Sunday to see Louisville Lacrosse in their season opener against the Bearcats. Paulie talked with head coach Scott Teeter on Wednesday to discuss preparation and practice for the season opener, the opponent and the recent honors Caroline Blalock received.

Teeter has a lot of confidence in this year's squad and says the players are at the point where they need to get out and play someone besides themselves.

The link for this interview follows below:

We'll be featuring a weekly segment here at Cardinal Couple with Teeter interviews that'll discuss previous games, get you ready for the next opponent and much, much, more. These will occur on either Tuesday or Wednesday, so be sure to check out the site for them!

We're also working on setting up something weekly and similar with Louisville Softball and will update you on the progress of that.

We appreciate these program's coaches taking a little time out of their busy preparations to give us the "who, what, where, when, why and how" of their squads and season !

COMING ATTRACTION

-- Softball boards a plane to Clearwater, FL today to prepare for their NFCA Leadoff Classic.

Five games in three days, three different SEC opponents and two doubleheaders.

The Cards have been fortunate to get a lot of outside practice in, with this mild winter, and Holly Aprile has been busy evaluating her student-athletes and formulating a line-up.

Action starts on Friday at noon and it'll be available on You Tube. You can follow all the schedule events and results for softball, lacrosse and women's basketball over on the Right Side of the Site here at Cardinal Couple.

-- No burger review today. There were two places reviewed on Tuesday, so send your carnivorous desires to one of the two featured in the Tuesday Cardinal Couple until next week.!

Happy Thursday and Go Cards!

  1. Walz has his hands full tonight. I went back and watched a bit of the FSU vs. UNC game. If FSU is healthy, it could be that first "L" that Walz insists is coming eventually for UofL WBB in ACC play.

I'm curious as to why he keeps emphasizing that UofL WBB won't go defeated in ACC play? Wouldn't a better approach be something like 'we're going to try and win them all' or something positive?

    1. Maybe being realistic?
And, he has stated, many many times, he never goes into a game planning on losing.

    2. Agree with K, Walz knows the probability of 18-0 in the ACC is pretty high. It's also a motivational tactic as well. Show me you can do what I don't think you can.

  2. Wanna see Florida St at their best vs us at our best. Should be a very good and entertaining game if that happens. I also think we win😁
