Jude Schimmel invited to Dallas WNBA tryout camp -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WILL THERE BE A BOOK ABOUT THIS?

If you are unfamiliar with the Dallas Wings WNBA franchise...don't beat yourself up over it. It is their first year of existence in the Lone Star state. Previously known as the Tulsa Shock and the Detroit Shock prior to that...they've re-landed in a community that has taken a great initial interest in them and provides a in-state rival now for San Antonio.

The highly contested move (at least for the Tulsa folks) comes after they had their first over .500 record in the Tulsa portion of the franchise history in 2015. They also made the WNBA playoffs. An injury to Diggins slowed them down considerably...but they were showing signs of finally being competitive.

They'll play in the beautiful University of Texas-Arlington College Park Center and former Louisville point guard Jude Schimmel will attend the tryouts beginning April 23rd.

Schimmel faces a tough test in trying to make a roster that has Skylar Diggins and Odyssey Sims at starting guards with back ups Brianna Kiesel and Brittany Hrynko.

A WNBA squad will normally bring in 18-20 players to compete for the 10-11 spots available on the roster...the majority of these either from last year's team or with previous WNBA or European experience.

Schimmel was a four year player for UofL and complied these stats as a Card:

Career Rankings
10th in assists with 392
7th in steals with 221
Tied for 9th in games played with 135
Tied for 1st in NCAA Tournament games played with 15

A tough challenge for Shoni's sister...no doubt. One wonders if there might be a possible book in the future on the experience?

  1. Nothing like a banana split from the Dairy Kastle off Eastern Parkway near the UofL campus.

  2. Didn't know Jude was still trying to go pro. Hope she makes it. Uphill battle but she's been chopping that wood from the beginning. Good Luck to Her.

    1. Jude has her work cut out for her to make that or any WNBA roster. I'd like to see the Dream add her to have a Schimmel/Schimmel back court novelty. When I played my NAIA WBB many years ago, my coach barely spoke above a whisper. She was 73 and was in her 50th year of coaching at one level or another. Her assistants were just as solemn. But, when a point needed to be made, practice was stopped and everyone went through the correct scenario. Of course, we never wom more than 11 games a year in my four years there.

Banana bread? Yes, please! The Deb Factor

    2. I was gonna post up yesterday that I appreciate your takes. You clearly get WCBB. In my opinion Jude just needs to get this outta the way and move on to her successful future. I worry less about Jude's path going forward than Shoni's. Like most of us that played Jude just wasn't blessed with the physical equipment to succeed at the next level. Won't stop me from having her back though.

  3. Off topic : in 2010 20,000 woman college basketball players were surveyed and less than 40% said their college coach could be trusted. Whew,
I went to a small college and the slimiest person on campus was men's bball coach. Many of these kids know the coach doesn't give s rats ass about them. A lot of pressure on cosch' with bigger money at stake.. These young ladies aren't dumb. They know when a coach carries 15 players that's not a good sign for team unity a lot of the time. Then again when a team like Washington goes to the final four using 6 players that's great for the 6 and sucks for the rest of the team. Bottom line we forget some of these coach's are slick as used car salesman. Not popular to say but reading reality. How do you get a less than 40% "can be trusted" score. It's not all on kids being soft.

Above is link to ESPN video report plus an objectively done article on fine line of abuse of power between coach and players

  4. Definitely a smoothie for banana consumption. When Jude was recruited (before I was a fan) who would have thought she'd be rank in top 10 career categories. She was fun to watch develop as a player. I remember her hitting several early 3's and breaking Cal's press on the road her senior year for a nice win. Total class. We were very lucky to have her.

  5. Sports Illustrated did a preseason top 25
Anyone know how Cards ranked or have link? I couldn't find it.

    1. Charlie Creme ranked Cards #2, behind Notre Dame. That sounds a little high.
