Louisville women's basketball must avoid getting stung by Yellow Jackets today -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
CARDS NEED TO STAY ON THE TRACKS AGAINST GA. TECH
Redemption train...ACC line...got off to a great start Friday with a 79-69 win over #15 FSU Friday in the KFC YUM! Center. The Louisville WBB squad now rolls into Atlanta to face a dangerous Georgia Tech squad today at 2 p.m. in the McCamish Pavillion on the GT campus.
It'll be a homecoming for Asia Durr, who played her high school hoops at Douglasville St. Pius X and for assistant coach Sam Purcell...a Georgia native who spent six years as an assistant at Georgia Tech.
For both, and the Cardinals, to walk away with a "W" today...they'll need to take the sting out of several Tech players. Aaliyah Whiteside averages 19.9 ppg and 7.6 grabs per contest...both figures tops for the Yellow Jackets. She had 17 points in Ga.Tech's most recent outing...a 85-76 loss at Notre Dame. Roddreka Rogers also tallied 17 against the Irish and adds 13.2 per outing. Ciana Cryor notched 19 against Muffet McGraw's squad and comes off the bench. Antonia Peresson is a legitimate threat from the deep with 27 threes in the books.
Have the security on heightened alert as well for today's game also...Georgia Tech is 10th. in the nation in steals per game...averaging 12.3 pilfers per game.
The Yellow Jackets (10-4) are a perfect 8-0 at home. Losses have come at South Bend, Georgia, Indiana and in Cancun to Northern Iowa. Quality wins are hard to find in the Tech schedule so far...but they did beat Alabama by 12 and IUPUI...who gave Louisville fits...by 10.
Keys for a Louisville (9-5) victory will center on the continued good play of "the dependables"...Mariya Moore (13.6 ppg), Myisha Hines-Allen (15.1 ppg), Briahanna Jackson (14.7 ppg) and Cortnee Walton. We'd love to see a excellent hometown performance and extended minutes from Durr and the continued inspiring play from Arica Carter.
Coach Walz would no doubt also like to get some playing opportunities today for the freshmen Taja Cole, Sam Fuehring, Brianna Jones and Erin DeGrate if the statistics allow....plus attack Yorkie Dakota Weatherford.
We discuss FRED here on the site a lot and if the Cards can convert free throws, control the rebounding, make the easy shots and pay stellar defense...FRED should enjoy his jaunt down to pecan and peach country.
The broadcast will be on ESPN 3 for viewing and we'll be back later today with a recap of the action.

Cards handled them pretty easily last year. Their close game against UND worries me but if Myisha, Mariya and Briahanna are on game it should be another win. Hope Durr does see some substantial minutes.

Nice broadcast Paulie. Where did you find Paige? Sports talk radio needs more women like her who know what they're talking about and aren't afraid to voice an opinion.

Pretty much blind luck there. I, too, had seen her work at Swish Appeal and had heard her on CSZ. I started talking to her at a post-game press conference. Asked her if she'd like to do a show with us. she enthusiastically said "Yes!". We're happy to have her and feel she adds a lot to the broadcasts...along with Sam Draut...who is the sports editor for The Cardinal student newspaper.
DeleteBeen reading Paige's stuff over on Swish Appeal. She does a nice job. She's all ULWBB all the time.
