Soccer signs two -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

KB returns to strengthen defense
University of Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes has announced the Cards’ 2015 recruiting class, which includes two standout student-athletes. Jill Vetere and Gabrielle Vincent have both signed letters-of-intent to play for the University of Louisville next fall.

“We are thrilled to be adding both Gaby Vincent and Jill Vetere to our class of 2015,” said Ferguson-Dayes. “They will both be able to make an immediate impact on our program and we are excited to help them reach their potential both in the classroom and on the playing field.”

Both Vetere and Vincent have extensive experience on the
high school, club, and national development levels and will help the Cardinals compete within one of the most talented conferences in the country.

“Jill and Gaby are great compliments to one another,” she added. “While Jill has an attacking presence, Gaby has the defensive presence and both have the mentality to compete in the very prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference.”

The Cards graduated just four from the 2014 squad, including standout Erin Yenney...at least six freshmen were heavily involved in Ferguson-Dayes playing rotation and the team returns starting goalie Paige Brown. They also  return their top three leading scorers from last season and freshman sensation Inger Katrine Bjerke.

In an effort to fill out the roster, Coach "K" has also announced that there will be spring tryouts for walk-on spots on the team.

The squad went 7-9-2 last year overall and 3-5-2 in the very
demanding ACC. The freshmen that were exposed to how soccer is played on the collegiate level undoubtedly know now what is expected of them and what they need to produce to get Louisville contending for the conference title year-in and year-out.

Whether it will take another rebuilding year or not is anybody's guess. Tom Jurich wants people in the brand new Lynn Stadium and a competitive team on the turf. Even though the attendance figures were impressive for the first year...another season below .500 could have an impact on the future direction of the program.

  1. Women's soccer was in over their head this year. In the Fla. State game it sure looked like the UofL girls just gave up at the end. You make a good point about the relative youthfulness of the team, but better recruiting in the years prior to that would have prevented the predictament they were in last year.

The time clock is ticking on the coaching staff. Men's soccer Ken Lolla turned it around. Why can't the women?

  2. LOL. How soon they forget. The team went 13-6 in 2013 and made the NCAA Tournament where they suffered a heartbreating 3 overtime loss to a very good Illinois State team. Give KFD a chance to adapt, recruit and work with the youth on the team,

Rome (or Lynn Stadium) wasn't built in a day and way too early to throw the babies out with the bathwater.

Let's see....are there any other non-sequiters I can toss in here?
