Cardinal Couple Tuesday - Catching Up On Sunday Events

Sunday Funday

While most of the attention and discussion around UofL Women's Sports Sunday was about the Basketball team, there were other events going on.

Lacrosse

The Louisville Lacrosse team opened their season here at home with a very cold game against Cincinnati.  With a predicted high of 23 for the day, this wasn't exactly an ideal day to sit on metal bleachers at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.  On the other hand, the outcome was solidly in the Cardinals favor.

Sophomore Hannah Koloski scored a double hat-trick, with junior Cortnee Daley only a single goal behind with 5. Junior Kaylin Morissette, senior Faye Brust, and senior Cat Gordon all found the back of the goal twice.  Cincinnati came up far short of Louisville tally of 17 with only 8 points.

Kaylin Morissette came up with a ridiculous 14 draw
controls, with Sophomore Heidi Smith controlling 5, and Sophomore Stephanie McNamara bringing one down.  In comparison, Cincinnati, as a team, controlled only 6 draws.

This one was never really in much doubt, though Cincinnati is apparently a significantly improved team over past years, but as this was the season opener for both, only further contests will clarify that.

Softball

Always dangerous Middle Tennessee caused some problems for the Softball squad.  UofL started out with a 3-0 advantage through four innings, but errors spelled the end of that lead on three unearned runs.

No scoring to be had for either team the rest of the way in regulation, but the Blue Raiders capitalized on starting off the eighth inning with a runner on second per international rules and added on the insurance run to take the game 5-3 in the extra inning.

Freshmen Madi Norman and Shelby McCombs along with sophomore Maryssa Becker were the hurlers for the Cardinals.

Softball will next take the field this weekend at EKU's tournament in Richmond, KY where they'll play four games.  Saturday sees competition against Kent State and Western Michigan, and Sunday gives a rematch with Kent State, and a game against host EKU.  This all, of course, is weather-permitting.

Mariya Moore Honored

In what will come as a surprise to basically no one, Mariya Moore earned Freshman of the Week honors for Women's Basketball in the ACC.

This honor comes as a result of UofL's 2-0 week, with Moore's performances of 15 points and eight assists against Clemson, and what surely clenched it, her 28 points with 11 of 12 free throw shooting, in the big win over North Carolina.

  1. Moore had a fantastic week. The Cards still need to take care of business in South Bend next week. Notre Dame survived a slow start and downed Duke last night.

  2. Softball probably won't get any of the EKU games in it looks like because of weather. Will UofL WBB play in Blacksburg?

    1. I agree that the EKU softball games look pretty iffy at this point, but we won't know until we get closer to the date...at least we don't have to travel too far for them, so its not that big of a deal for the team to go there and not play. Would kinda suck for Western Michigan, though.
