Preseason ACC Softball and Lacrosse Rankings -- Yep, we got 'em -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

-Softball ranked fifth, LAX seventh in ACC Preseason Polls.

-Durr breaks loose for 53

You know the seasons are right around the corner when the conferences start releasing their preseason rankings. The ACC has two of them out for spring sports....Softball and Lacrosse. The Hit and Pitch Cards were selected to finish fifth out of 11 ACC teams and the LAX Cards were predicted to finish seventh out of eight teams.

Let's take a look...

Louisville softball enters their first ACC season predicted to finish fifth in the league. The Cards received 68 votes, just one behind Virginia Tech's 69.

Florida State gathered 10 of the 11 first place votes for 100 and they are the 2014 reigning ACC champs and reached the College World Series last year. Chief Osceola's fence swingers finished with a 55-9 record and went 24-3 in the ACC.

Notre Dame got the other first place vote and gathered 88 points. They finished second in the ACC with a 41-13, 16-5 record and made the NCAA Tournament

North Carolina State gets show money with 82 points. Mr and Mrs. Wuf's cubs were third in the ACC last year and a NCAA Tournament participant. After Virginia Tech and Louisville...here's the rest of the predictions:

6)   North Carolina   56  (24-26, 14-11)
7)   Syracuse            44  (24-25, 12-12)
8)   Georgia Tech     33  (23-24, 11-17)
9)   Boston College   32  (30-23, 12-14)
10) Pitt                    17  (15-29,  6-18)
11) Virginia              16  (8-43,    1-25)

The Cards begin the season Feb. 6th. at the UNLV Sportco
Kick-Off Classic. Why they call it a kick-off is anyone's guess.

The Cards preseason ranking is about what I expected. The top five schools were the only participants in the NCAA Tournament last year. Although the Cards did win the AAC Conference Tournament title...most consider ACC Softball a little tougher conference and the Cards aren't quite where Florida State, Notre Dame and NC State are in talent levels.

Louisville is young. On the mound and behind the plate. The returning veterans will bolster the middle and outfield...but the Cards will need several sophomores and freshmen to step up after last season's departure of talent that led the Cards to the AAC Tournament title.

Lacrosse joins the toughest conference in the nation and debuts as the seventh pick. An undefeated sweep of the BIG EAST Tournament and regular season didn't impress the voters for preseason ACC predictions.

North Carolina and Syracuse got four first place votes each and the Tar Heels and Orange received 59 points each. Duke grabs third with 40 points and Virginia got 39. Right behind them was Boston College with 38 points. Notre Dame is sixth with 29, the Cards got 16 and Virginia Tech received 8

The Cards have their work cut out for them. Any of the top four could win the NCAA Tournament and no eyebrows would be raised...the programs are that good.

Will a veteran squad with multiple weapons that is coming off the best season in Louisville Lacrosse history be able to upset this powerhouse apple cart?

We'll find out next Sunday...when the Cards open it up against Cincinnati at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium at 2 p.m.

We're predicting the LAX Cards will finish better than seventh in the league. Cracking the top four could be difficult...but four of Louisville's top five scorers return and the veteran defensive unit Kellie Young has assembled could surprise the new conference foes.

Junior Kaylin Morissette was selected to the Preseason All-ACC team.

There's 52 playing cards in a deck. Asia Durr used every one of them Tuesday night...plus a joker.

University of Louisville signee Asia Durr had a huge night on Tuesday in her second-to-last regular-season game at St. Pius X High School in Atlanta, Ga.
Durr, considered the No. 1 player in the country, tallied 53 points in St. Pius X's win over Redan High School 75-70. St. Pius X is 22-2 on the season.
In the game, Durr hit the 2,500 mark for her career. She now has 2,505 points for her career. She has one regular-season game and the postseason tournament left.
Durr has been hitting 47 percent of her three-point field goals on the season and averages more than 32 points a game for St. Pius X.
She has been selected to play in the McDonald's All-American game in April.

  1. Durr looking very good. Is there any weakness to her game?

    1. In an earlier post I said Durr doesn't use her right hand enough, but if someone scores 53 points, she can probably play with one hand tied behind her back.

  2. Seven ACC Lacrosse teams are ranked in the NCAA top 13. Louisville is #13th. Just think if Maryland was still in the ACC. This is one tough conference!
