Walton out for season -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

Junior forward to apply for medical redshirt

Louisville WBB head coach Jeff Walz has announced that junior forward Cortnee Walton will miss the rest of the season and will apply for a medical redshirt.

If granted by the NCAA, the Surprize, AZ native would have two years of eligibility beginning next season.

Walz indicates that Walton felt soreness after the Georgia Tech game in her middle toe...which was broken in the preseason. After playing against Pittsburgh, she reported significant pain and after the team's physicians evaluation upon return to Louisville...it was determined that continued game action and practice would just further aggravate the healing process and extended rest and continued therapy would be the best path to pursue.

Sometimes you have to consider what is best for the individual over team needs. Mr. Spock, of Star Trek fame, may have indicated that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one...but, in this case, the health, safety and future of a talented young lady takes precedence.

And it should.

Walton played in four games for Louisville this season. She started once...against Grand Canyon University and saw a total of 53 minutes on the court (an average of 13.3 per game). She scored a total of 14 points for the Cards (3.5 a game) and grabbed 14 rebounds. Walton was 6-8 from the free throw line and 4-9 from the floor.

Her experience, knowledge and aggressive defense will be missed.

On a squad that has only one player averaging over six rebounds per contest (Emmonnie Henderson), Walton's ability to get to the ball, cover the defender and get to the line will be a significant loss to a team that is outrebounding their opponents by 11 a game.

We wish her a full and complete recovery and look forward to seeing her on the side lines cheering on the team (maybe she and Syd can start a injured body parts support hot-line) and can't wait to see her back on the court next year.

Rumors that she and Syd are considering name changes to Cortnee Wal(toe) and Syd(knee brace)myer are unconfirmed

Cortnee's role will be important in 2015-16. The Cards lose Sara, Shawnta' and Sherrone. She'll be the most experienced front-liner on a squad next season that is currently projected to have no seniors, two juniors, one sophomores, one redshirt freshman and two freshmen patrolling the paint.

It is, unfortunately, an all-too-common and frequent aspect of sports...losing performers to injuries. We've seen it on the WBB squad too often. Dez Byrd, Monique Reid, Shawnta' Dyer, Sherrone Vails, Tia Gibbs...to name just a few. Competition can have its price to pay at times.

We hope Walton can "toe the line" and come back strong.

  1. I agree. Hate to see Cortnee have to sit out but she'll be great when she comes back healthy for the next two seasons. She looked like she was hurting at the GCU game. She's a great kid...strong BB IQ, great work ethic and great personal character. Everybody remembers her following up and protecting Shoni after The Shot against Baylor.

Just had a chance to listen to the podcast of Walz's program on ESPN680. Highly recommended. Really gives you great perspective on how things are going.

    1. It is a good show. Walz and Andrews work well together. I'd probably attend but Chili's is not a favorite restaurant of mine anymore after a food poisoning
incident I encountered after dining there. They would assume no resonsibility.

    2. Maybe that explains why they feed kids for free...

  2. No facts to back this up just conjecture but I think she could of played this year and we are doing it to protect the team for two yrs from now. So we'll have "senior" forward two more years

    1. As you said, " no facts to back this up". Watching Cortnee made it very obvious that she was often in pain.
This is what is good for her and what is needed.

  3. Western Ky 12-2 is #25 in AP ahead of schools like
    Washington 12-2 (beat #9 Texas A&M),
Florida State 13-2 (almost beat ND on road),
South Florida 12-3 (losses were to MD, St Johns, and KY by only 4),
Cal 10-3, (lost to Cards by 13, Kansas then LBSt in OT) beat Colorado by 21
Seton Hall 13-2 (beat #14 Georgia by 19 , lost to WV by 2 on road and St. Johns )
Western Ky 12-2 ( lost to Cards by 22 and Miss St by 11 both ranked teams they faced...beat a good Tulane team and Colorado by 1 in OT)
no way they should be ahead of these other schools

  4. This means Cards are 2-1 vs currently ranked teams

  5. Hi Paulie
How good do you think Brackmyre can be if she recovers 100% and stays healthy?
Here's what one ratings service had to say
    Biggest Sleeper:
“That would have to be between Brackemeyer and Carter. I think Brackemeyer is really the sleeper of the class because a lot of people look at her as not being athletic as the others but she’s so smart and can do everything. She is kind of like Sara Hammond. She’ll do whatever it takes to help the team win. She will be a good teammate.”
Hoopgurlz had her rated at a 97 and Mariya at a 96

    1. That's a really good question! She's progressing really well after the second surgery and she'll most likely be used as a wing (she has a better than average three ball) or a forward. Syd's game is multi-purpose...she can rebound, run the court, score inside or out and deliver on defense. A Hammond comparison isn't too far off...she really reminded me of a Candyce Bingham with three-point skills when I was watching her game vids. The key, of course, is coming back ready to go and free of knee pain. If healthy, she'll be one of those players Walz can use in several different spots. Starter? That might not happen right away...but I can honestly tell you that her high school skills reminded me of the way Asia Taylor dominated opponents. Maybe a step slower than Rebecca Greenwell but there is a very smart and aware court presence in her game. She won't have any trouble learning a game plan, a opponent scout sheet or who to guard and how...
