Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- Battered Knights face WBB tonight

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- UCF comes to town minus leading scorer.

It's tough enough for a visiting team to come play Louisville WBB in the KFC YUM Center. Doing it without your best player (and leading scorer) makes it twice as rough.

Such is the situation for the UCF Golden Knights when they face the UofL WBB squad tonight at 7 p.m. Briahanna Jackson, who was averaging almost 18 points per game and 21 points in conference play, left the squad for personal reasons a couple of days ago and is expected to enroll in a junior college...according to sources. The sophomore scored 21 points against the Cards last season at the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta in a 94-73 loss.

Who does UCF turn to now?

Freshman Zykira Lewis averages 11.1 a game. Senior Sara Djasel adds 11 per contest. Junior Andrea Hines had 10 for the Golden Knights in a 88-52 loss to Memphis Saturday. Brittany Montgomery and Erika Jones are the glass-cleaners for UCF...both over seven grabs per game.

UCF is 8-7 on the season and 1-3 in AAC action...losing three in a row. Louisville has won nine straight and is 16-1 overall...4-0 in The American.

Shoni Schimmel needs four points tonight to pass Jazz Covington and become the thirdmost all-time scorer in UofL women's basketball history. Neil Knox is 100 points away in second.

Jude Schimmel will sit again, on the shelf with a level 2 ankle sprain ( on a scale of 1-3). No decision yet on the trip to Texas and playing time. Ankle sprains can be a bear. Tia Gibbs will be available but after 28 minutes against USF...she'll probably will watch this one from the Cardinal sidelines. Nothing on Shawnta Dyer, either.

Speculation is that Cardinal fans will see increased time for 'Cash' Monny at the point and Megan Deines on Denny Crum Court. Maybe a bit more "E" and Cortnee.

The Knights don't appear to be the kind of team to engage Louisville in a run and gun, up and down the court shootout.

Nor do they look capable of pulling a upset. This squad is reeling without Jackson and settling into the basement of The American Conference.

Can the Cards get a large lead and build on it tonight? It's worth coming out to check out. Another of the $2 Budweiser and soft drinks promotions is in place for the game. If you can't attend...WHAS 11.2/Insight 432 and Comcast (whatever) will have the broadcast live...along with Matt Andrews and AJ's always entertaining radio call.

And we'll have a full report on the action in the Thursday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE.

  1. It appears that the NCAA has a your favorite school voting contest where UL is very far down the list. If anyone wants to vote... Here is the link.
