Golf at Cougar Classic -- Volleyball Moves to #3 -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Golf Completes First Two Days at Cougar Classic

Louisville women's golf completed the first two rounds of the Cougar Classic with a 20-over-par 588 for 17th place. The third and final round begins today. The event is in Charleston, SC and being hosted by the College of Charleston. 

Carmen Griffiths shot 4-over-par 75 to sit in 35th. Mairead Martin is 63rd at +5 (74-73). Gabbi Bentancourt is 67th at +6 (73-75). Molly Lyne is 79th at +8 (76-74). Carly Haines wraps up the Cards in the event in 92nd at +13 (79-76).

Being the opening event of the 2022-2023 season, there shouldn't be much concern of the lower-than-expected placement. The squad is made up of two freshmen, two sophomores, and one junior. As the season progresses, especially into the spring, Coach Whitney Young will have the younger faces ready to go.

Lauren Thibodeau and Hana Ryskova have both been in the standard rotation in the past. The duo enter their final year of eligibility. It's assumed they are sitting out this event to allow other players to get experience.

Volleyball Moves Up to #3

Following a strong weekend of sweeping a ranked Purdue team and Lipscomb, Louisville volleyball moved up a spot to #3 in the latest AVCA Poll. The Cards hold a 7-1 record.

Texas retained the top spot. Nebraska sits close behind the Longhorns in the second spot. Wisconsin leapt up a couple spot to fourth while Ohio State cracked the top five.

Other teams to note in the rankings include #7 Georgia Tech, #8 San Diego, #9 Stanford, #10 Purdue, #12 Pittsburgh, #13 Kentucky, and #21 Western Kentucky. Dang, Coach DBK, talk about putting together a loaded schedule!

Louisville travels to Kentucky on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. match on ESPN. There are still general admission tickets available for as cheap as $5.00 (before fees) on TicketMaster. The event will be at Memorial Coliseum.

The Cards then travel out west to visit Stanford on Saturday for a 10:00 p.m. ET match. There is no listed television for this match yet. One of the PAC channels is usually pretty good about picking events like this up, but it is a football Saturday, so all we can do is hope for the best.

Golf NCAA Regional Day One -- Softball to NCAA Tournament? -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Women's Golf in Seventh After Day One

Louisville women's golf sits in seventh place in their NCAA Regional after the opening day of action. The Cards finished the first day at 7-over-par 295, which is 11 strokes behind the first-place leader Oregon.

The current standings are:

The top four teams will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Lauren Thibodeau was the top performing Cardinal, shooting an even-par 72 to sit at 13th overall. Kendall Griffin and Carmen Griffiths are tied for 21st after shooting 2-over-par 72 on the day. Mairead Martin shot a 3-over-par 75 and Gabbi Bentancourt shot a 7-over-par 79.

Louisville tees off in the second day of action this morning at 10:00 MT (noon ET). The third and final round will be Wednesday. 

Softball to NCAA Tournament?

Following an unfortunate weekend sweep at #20 Notre Dame, Louisville Softball fell a spot to #40 in the rpi. Going into the ACC Tournament, finding a way to win is as important as can be. An opening round win against 9-seed Syracuse is a must. However, going up against 1-seed Virginia Tech in the second round is no easy task, but the Cards lost by one in the series opener against the Hokies a few weeks ago.

64 teams make the NCAA Tournament- 32 conference automatic qualifiers and 32 at-large bids. All the top teams in each conference winning their respective conference tournaments would help as well. 

A bracketology posting by College Sports Madness has Louisville in the Lexington Regional facing Robert Morris while Kentucky faces Wisconsin. Remember the last time a Kentucky team faced Robert Morris? (hint: Men's basketball NIT). 247 Sports has the Cards in the Lexington Regional as well but with Murray State replacing Robert Morris. Fast Pitch News puts Louisville in the Ann Arbor Regional with Michigan, South Carolina, and Miami (OH)

For now, it's time to take things one game at a time. 8-seed Louisville faces 9-seed Syracuse tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and will be aired on ACC Network.

WGolf to Final Day -- WBB -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Women's Golf Heads to Final Day of Moon Golf Invitational

After a 2-under-par 70 on the second day of the Moon Golf Invitational, Louisville women's golf heads into the final day in 12th place.

Gabbi Bentancourt led the Cards with a 2-over-74 to sit in 19th place. Agustina Gomez Cisterna was second for the Cards at even par-72 and 28th overall. Hana Ryskova sits at 56th while Carmen Griffiths and Mairead Martin are tied for 70th. Sitting at 79th, 81st, and 84th are Lauren Thibodeau, Molly Lynne, and Carly Haines, respectively.

The final round of the Moon Invitational concludes today.

Women's Basketball

Although the #1 seed in the ACC Tournament is officially out of reach and a tie for the ACC regular season title is nearly gone, Louisville women's basketball comfortably sits in second in the ACC and remains in the top four in the country.

Coming in at #4 in the most recent AP Poll, the Cards are in prime position to earn a 1-seed, but much more importantly, should host the opening two rounds of the ACC Tournament.

Louisville has two roads games left in the regular season, at Pittsburgh and then at Notre Dame. The Panthers are a bottom dweller in the conference this season with a 2-14 conference record and 11-16 overall record. Louisville *should* easily handle Pitt. Notre Dame is battling for the two-day bye in the ACC Tournament and sits tied with Virginia Tech for third with a 12-4 conference record. The Irish will be a force to be reckoned with in South Bend.

We will bring you more of a preview on Thursday and Paulie will break down the standings further tomorrow. We are also officially eight days away from the start of the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.

Golf Ties for First -- Weekend Happenings -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 Women's Golf Ties for First at Illini Invitational

Relying on a large rally heading into the final day of play at the Illini Invitational, Louisville Women's Golf shot an 11-under par to finish the event tied with #20 Georgia for first place.

Louisville was tied for fifth heading into the final day and posted a strong performance to leap up to first. The win is Louisville's first since taking home the title at the Cardinal Cup in 2019.

Kendall Griffin was the top Cardinal at the event with a final round score of 68 and overall score of 8-under-par to take second overall, individually. Lauren Thibodeau was right behind her with a 68 final-round score and a 6-under-par overall to place third.

Hana Ryskova shot a 2-under-par to finish tied for 18th. Carmen Griffiths shot a 3-over-par to finish 42nd. Mairead Martin was the final Cardinal in the event, finishing 50th after shooting a 5-over-par.

Louisville's fall season wraps up October 25-26 at the Club at Oldestone Invitational in Bowling Green, KY.

What to Watch for this Weekend

With the weekend swiftly approaching, plenty of fall sports are in action. With some of them in the home stretch, every match is crucial.

After dropping to #4 in the NFHCA Poll, Louisville Field Hockey travels to #12 Boston College for a 1:00 match. The Eagles are 9-3 overall, but sit at fifth in the conference with a 1-2 mark. The Cards are tied with Syracuse at the top with a 3-0 record. The Cards then travel to visit a 4-9 Northeastern squad on Sunday at noon.

#2 Louisville Volleyball is also on the road, with a Friday match against Virginia Tech and a Sunday match against Wake Forest. The Hokies are 9-9 on the year and the Demon Deacons are 10-7. The two foes are a combined 1-11 in conference play. The Cards should bring out the brooms for both matches, *hopefully*.

Louisville Women's Soccer only has one match this weekend, but they hope to stop the bleeding with a bounce back victory over Boston College at Lynn Stadium on Friday at 4:00 p.m. It's another double header with the men's team facing North Carolina shortly after the women's match ends. BC is 6-7-1 on the year and 0-6 in conference play so let's hope the Cards can cruise to a multi-goal performance victory to move up to 12 points in conference play.

Oh yeah, by the way, we are exactly three weeks away from the Louisville Women's Basketball exhibition at the KFC Yum! Center and the WBB Tipoff Luncheon is 15 days away on Oct 29th at the Galt House. 

Jeff Walz, Hailey Van Lith and Kianna Smith spent yesterday in Charlotte, NC at the ACC's WBB Media Day. No earth-shaking program or personnel information was revealed in Walz's chat with Packer and Durham or Van Lith and Smith's appearance on "Nothing But Net". We did find out, however,  that Van Lith hits the golf ball in low line drive fashion off the tee and Walz unveiled a life lesson:  "If the grass looks greener on the other side, it's because of the bull s#&% over there fertilizing it."  Deb Antonelli seemed to be stuck on the query "Dana who?" --( about what you'd expect from a NCST grad)...

Golf Final Results -- WSoc Travels to Notre Dame -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Women's Golf Finishes Seventh

Louisville Women's Golf wrapped up their final day of play at The Blessings Intercollegiate in Arkansas yesterday. The Cards finished the invitational tied for sixth overall.

A pair of Cards had high finishes in the event. Hana Ryskova finished tied for 9th with a final score of 218 (+2). The junior shot a 71-74-73. Kendall Griffin finished tied for 20th. The graduate transfer had a final score of 224 (+8) by shooting a 77-72-75.

Lauren Thibodeau and Carmen Griffiths went back-to-back at 32nd and 41st with scores of 230 (+14) and 235 (+15), respectively. The last Cardinal to participate in the event was Mairead Martin. The senior finished 47th with a score of 240 (+24).

The Cards head to Champaign, Ill., next weekend for the Illinois Invitational.

WSOC Cards Travel to Notre Dame

Louisville Women's Soccer looks to ride off the momentum of an overtime victory against Wake Forest as they face #24 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The Cards and Irish are set to kick off at 8:00 p.m., on Bally Sports South, the same channel Louisville Volleyball and Louisville Football were on last weekend.

The Cards are 7-2-1 on the year with a 3-1 record in conference play. The nine points in the ACC puts the Cards fourth behind Florida State (12), Notre Dame (12), and Virginia (10).

Notre Dame enters the match 10-1-1 on the year and a perfect 4-0 mark in the ACC. Offense has been the 'Name of the Game' for the Irish, who have scored 34 goals on the year. Notre Dame has outscored opponents 15-2 in their four ACC matches.

Missouri took down the Irish 3-2 in overtime earlier this year and Indiana was able to force a 0-0 draw. The ACC victories came against Syracuse (4-0), Miami (5-0), Boston College (4-1), and NC State (2-1).

Grad student Sammi Fisher leads the team with eight goals, which ranked eighth in the country. Ashley Naylor has been part of a three person rotation, but has logged the most minutes at 518. She has five saves and a .625 save percentage. Her partners in goal have logged a combined 588 minutes with 21 saves.

Louisville hasn't been great over the years against Notre Dame, sitting at 4-12-1 all-time. However, the Cards are 3-4-1 in the last eight outings with two of those going into overtime and none of them having a goal differential of more than two.

Jared Sez: 

It wouldn't be a surprise to see Louisville revert to the five-person back line again in hopes to slow the Notre Dame offense. However, unlike the match against Florida State, I hope the Cards will be more aggressive with a counter attack.

The 'Park the Bus' style gameplay is great -- in trying and preventing a team from scoring several goals, but hasn't provided any chances for a counter offensive. Usually, this strategy will most likely end in a clean sheet for the opponent. If Louisville can keep a couple of attackers forward and get Notre Dame on their heels, the Cards can pull off the upset.

Women's Golf In 4th at Blessings -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS WOMEN'S GOLF IN FOURTH PLACE IN ARKANSAS

It's been awhile since we've covered Louisville women's golf here at Cardinal Couple -- and with WSOC off until tomorrow (at Notre Dame), Volleyball not scheduled until Friday (hosting Boston College and Field Hockey resting up for a couple of days before returning to practice Thursday and then going to #2 Michigan on Sunday -- I thought it might be a good time to catch us up on Louisville women's golf. 

The "chip and putt" Cards are in their third invitational of the fall season -- getting ready for their final day of action at the Blessing Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.  No doubt, an interesting name for a invitational -- no philosophical or attitude-oriented significance here -- it's just the name of the golf course the team are participating on. Previous outings had the Cards finishing 6th in the Wolverine Invitational (three guesses on who was the home squad for that one) and Mason Rudolph Invitational in Nashville, where Louisville finished in a tie for ninth.

In case you wondered, the Mason Rudolph tournament was named after the professional golfer, from Clarksville, TN, who was on the PGA Tour in the 50's and 60's and not for the NFL quarterback on the Pittsburgh Steelers squad. 

Louisville is currently in fourth place at the Blessings Collegiate  Invitational after 36 holes. There are ten universities participating in the event, with Arkansas (the host school) leading the way with an 11-stroke advantage over second place UCLA. The Cards are ten strokes back of third-place Texas Tech.

Leading the way for UofL is junior Hana Ryskova, who has put together rounds of 71 and 74 to sit at seventh place overall with her 1-over-par, two-day total. Graduate student Kendall Griffin, who came to the Cards this season from LSU, fired a even-par 72 Tuesday and is tied for 13th-placce overall with her two-day total of 149.

Senior Lauren Thibodeau is tied for 20th place after her 74 Tuesday. Freshman Carmen Griffiths, out of Scotland, has a two round total of 153 and Irish native Mairead Martin checks in at 159.

Other 2021 Cardinal women's golfers, who did not make the trip to Arkansas are freshman Gabi Betancourt, sophomores Carly Haines and Molly Lyne and junior Agustina Gomez Cisternos.

Lauren Hartlage

It seems a little strange to be discussing Louisville women's golf and not bringing up Lauren Hartlage....but she did graduate in the spring and is competing on the Symetra Tour, along with former Cardinal golfer Laura Restrepo.  The Symetra Tour is the official qualifying tour for the LGPA tour.

Women's Golf at Illini Invitational -- Volleyball back in top 25 -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

HARTLAGE TIED FOR FIRST, WOMEN'S GOLF IN SECOND

A good day for Lauren Hartlage and the Louisville women's golf squad at the Illini Invitational at the Medinah Country Club. 

Hartlage, a senior, is tied for first place after 36 holes with a 5-under-par 139. Her 70-69 split on the first day included six birdies on two tours of the course . Consistency was the key for the Elizabethtown, KY turf specialist..just one bogey in yesterday's play. 

Mairead Martin, who is a sophomore out of Kanturk, Ireland, is also hitting the ball well. She's one stroke back of Hartlage with a 36-hole total of 140. Martin recorded an incredible 11 birdies on Monday and her second round 68 is tied for the second lowest round by anyone in the tournament. 

Hana Ryskova, a freshman who hails from Frydek-Mistek in the Czech Republic,  is tied for 25th place with  1-over-par 145. That includes an eagle on a par five, a rarity in golf. No, she didn't hit one of our nation's proud symbols...she scored a three on the hole. 

Agustina Gomez-Cisterna is playing in her first ever tournament for the "chip-and-putt" Cards and is one stroke back of Ryskova. The Buenos Aires, Argentina freshman 146 for the day was good for a tie for 27th. I wonder if she knew WSOC's Meche Pastor when she was there? 

Kent State sits atop the leader board with a three stroke lead over UofL. The Cards completed the 36 holes with a 570. 

It looks like this slight change in the Cards starting four has produced some beneficial results. First-year head Coach Whitney Wade Young has a vast knowledge of the game and excelled at it in high school, college and on the LPGA. Her ability to analyze "who is hot and who is not" and make the necessary line-up adjustments is paying dividends so far in Illinois.

Let's just hope the Cards can finish strong...in this fall season, the Cards have had a penchant for the "good day/bad day" syndrome.    

The squads will play 18 holes today to conclude the tournament.  You can monitor the results at  GOLF STAT.

VOLLEYBALL REJOINS TOP 25

After taking two matches last week, the VolleyCards have climbed back into the NCAA Volleyball top 25, checking in at 25th. 

The AVCA Coaches Poll has three ACC squads in the top 25. Pittsburgh (15-1) is ranked #3, Florida State (9-4) takes the #23 spot and Louisville (11-3) slides in at #25. The Cards received 79 points in the poll, enough to squeeze out Western Kentucky, who gathered 70 points.  

As you've read here over the past several days, Louisville swept Georgia Tech and Clemson last week, winning each match 3-0. 

The first RPI rankings of the season are also out now and UofL grabs #20 on that list. 

Louisville is undefeated in the ACC with a 4-0 mark. All of the three losses this season have come against top 25 opponents:  #12 Kentucky, #14 Florida and #20 Purdue

The Cards now prepare for a four-match road swing that will take them on a two-week tour that begins in North Carolina to start it off.

Any Cardinal Fans headed to Wake Forest for football Saturday might want to take advantage of the chance to see Volleyball play Duke on Friday in Durham (it's just a 80-mile drive) and then stick around Sunday in Winston-Salem for the Wake Forest match.

-- WAKE FOREST  Sunday, Oct 13th.

-- NOTRE DAME  Weds, Oct 16th.

Dani Busboom Kelly has a plethora of competant middle blockers and outside hitters at her disposal and it is especially exciting to see freshmen Aiko Jones and Nena Mbonu contributing so strongly in the Cardinal attack. The Cards have greatly benefited from a couple of junior's strengths in Alexis Hamilton's strong "digging" skills and Tori Dilfer's steady assist capabilities. 

Here's hoping "consistently great" senior Melanie McHenry and the squad come back to the "Ville" in a couple of weeks with a 15-3 record !!

Outdoor Track and Field Championships Begins -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Five Cards Set to Compete at the NCAA Track and Field Championships

Overshadowed by the WCWS in Oklahoma City, baseball out at Jim Patterson Stadium and WNBA season beginning --  the NCAA Track and Field Championships is sneaking up on us. .

Five Louisville Cardinals- three women and two men- will be in Austin, TX with hopes of bringing home a ring.

Makenli Forrest is a name we've mentioned numerous times here at Cardinal Couple.  The sophomore will compete in two events.  On Thursday, Forrest will compete in the hammer throw.  On Saturday, she will try her luck in the discus.  She has set personal bests in both events this season.

Gabriela Leon will also compete on the field events side, going up for the pole vault.  The sophomore broke the school record earlier in the year and is in  her second straight NCAA finals appearance.  Leon will compete tonight at 7:30.

Ivine Chemutai is the only runner in the bunch.  Like her teammates, she is a sophomore- what a class!  Chemutai will compete in the 10,000m, which is an event that should take her just over 30 minutes to complete.  She will compete Thursday evening.

WCWS

ESPN gave a women's sport the spotlight they deserve as UCLA and Oklahoma squared off in the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.  The Bruins took the first game the previous day and the Sooners were looking to even the series to force a Game 3.

UCLA began the game with two consecutive home runs and used a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 5-4 and claim the title.

With the direction Louisville Softball is headed I would not be surprised to see the Cards battling it out for a championship in a few years.

Keep an eye out for Friday's post as I'll hit Chapter 2 of the History of Women's Sports at UofL.  This week will feature another team that's not far from the start of their season: field hockey.


Louisville women's golf 

The Louisville women's golf team is in Ireland, hosted by freshman golfer Mairead Martin and her family, to hold a few clinic and tour the Emerald Isle. Martin is a native of Kantuck County, Cork Ireland. The group spent the first day holding a girls' golf clinic and then attending a Celtic Step Show.

Louisville women's golf will spend a week in Ireland. The Cards recently complete the Spring Season with an 11th. place finish in the NCAA East Lansing Regional. Their three-day total was 902.

Louisville loses just one senior, Olivia Cason, and welcomes new head coach Whitney Wade Young for the 2019-20 season.



I wonder if Kyrie Irving, Terry Rozier and Al Horford took part in the Celtic...oops, never mind, different Celtics.

Softball Wins; Track and Field and Golf Busy -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Come Back in Chestnut Hill

After handing Florida State their first conference series loss since 2012, Louisville softball was rewarded with a mid-week break before heading northeast for a three-game set with Boston College. In the first game of that series yesterday, Louisville saw the struggling hosts (13-24, 3-10) jump out to a 2-0 lead through four innings.

After holding everyone at 0 runs in the fifth, Louisville decided that they didn't want to lose to the Eagles. The Cards put up 5 runs in the top of the sixth inning and added another 4 in the top of the seventh for good measure. Boston College was unable to score anymore runs and a 2-0 lead turned into a 9-2 loss for the home team.

Megan Hensley got the start and was okay through her three innings. She allowed just one hit, but walked three and allowed a run. She was lifted at the beginning of the fourth for Taylor Roby. Roby allowed a run as soon as she entered, but also allowed just that one run and one hit. After Roby bookended a strikeout in the sixth inning with a pair of four pitch walks, Danielle Watson came in to get the last out of the sixth with runners on first and second. Presumably to save her arm for the rest of the series, Watson was pulled after her one out performance with the Cards holding a 9 run lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Roby finished the game out with a 1-2-3 inning and that was all she wrote.

Though the Cardinals' offense didn't cross the plate until the sixth inning, a Louisville batter reached base in every inning prior except for the fourth. All told, the Cards would finish with nine hits and draw four walks. However, they did strike out six times collectively and left eight runners on base.

Louisville was not led by the usual suspects, as Maddy Newman and Charley Butler picked up 6 of the 9 RBIs. Newman finished 2-3 at the plate and drew a walk, while all of Butler's RBIs came off of a bases loaded double. Kyra Snyder also had a big day at the plate, going 3-4 and knocking in a run. Sidney Melton had an unusual day to forget, going just 1-4 at the plate and drawing a walk, but leaving 4 on base. 

The Cards will look to take the series and set up a potential sweep in game two of the series today at 1PM. Louisville will hope to have a bit more consistent bats in today's game. The game is listed on ACC Network Extra, so if you aren't down at the Waterfront for Thunder Over Louisville, tune in at home. Golf Holds Strong but Falls Short

The Cards are down in Georgia for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Invitational and are taking on tough squads from mostly the SEC. Louisville dropped a pair of team matches yesterday in an individual match play format to a pair of ranked SEC teams.

The first came against #6 Arkansas, with Louisville earning a pair of wins from Mairead Martin and Lauren Hartlage, but ultimately falling 3-2 overall. The second loss came after Louisville battled to an all-square finish with wins from Margot Bechadergue and Olivia Cason and a draw from Delaney Shah. Ultimately, Florida was granted the win on overall margin of victory after an unfortunate 6 and 5 finish from Lauren Hartlage. Louisville got back on the course this morning just after 8AM.

Strong Opening for T&F in Louisville Invitational

Louisville swept the hammer throw in both competitions yesterday and had three finishers in the top six on the women's side. Makenli Forrest took home first place and was followed by Carsen Cassell and Halee Hudson in fifth and sixth. Forrest's first place throw was nearly 10 meters further than Cassell's fifth. No other results from the women's side were listed for yesterday, but the competition continues today.

Ionescu Takes Wooden Award

The Cards WBB star Asia Durr was one of the finalist for the Wooden Award, which is player of the
year, but the honor went to Oregon's Sabina Ionescu. The junior decided early in the month to return to school instead of trying her luck in the WNBA Draft.

Ionescu winning was a surprise to many, including Ionescu -- who sat there open-mouthed in amazement when her name was called. Many thought Durr or possibly nominee Megan Gustafson from Iowa would get the nod.

Just goes to show that we don't always get what we want, but Durr had a huge season and it is an honor just to be named in the final five.  The other finalists were Tearia McCowan and Napheesa Collier. Jeff Walz was in L.A. with Durr for the awards ceremony.

Durr, who was selected #2 in the recent WNBA Draft, is headed to New York to play for the Liberty and many experts think it'll be a great fit for her.
