Cards Volleyball Stats -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 20-4 VOLLEYCARDS RANKED #7 in D1

Meske's squad in third place in ACC standings.

With the Louisville Volleyball squad set to play FSU Thursday in the LNFCUA...I figured it just might be time to catch up on a few of the stats that the Volleyball have amassed this season. The 20-4 record is impressive in Meske's first year as the head coach, and with losses to Texas, Kentucky, SMU and Pitt...the Cards have only lost to the #2 (UK), #3,(Pitt) #4 Texas and #10 SMU teams in the DI rankings.

Kamden Schrand is the only Cards Volleyball player who has played in all of the 88 sets the Cards  have played in this season. Schrand, a libero out of Notre Dame Academy, also leads the Cards in a rather dubious stat....service errors on the season .

In set assists, the runaway leader is Navelis Cabello...with 880. Cabello is a sophomore on the squad this season.

Kills, as we know, are quite important in any squad's success and Cards have five players with over 200. Chloe Chicoine leads the way with 282 in 87 sets, Chicoine is a junior outside hitter who transferred to Louisville from Purdue this season. Also over 200 are Payton Peterson (255). Kaylissa Blackshear (248) and Kara Kresse (214).

One question I get asked from time to time is "where is so-and-so from?"  Out of the 16 players on the roster..fFive of them call Indiana home. Two are from California and there is also two from Iowa. Finally, there is one each from Nebraska, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Texas, Maryland and Kentucky.

Finally, what is the class breakdown for the Cards? Five are freshmen, one is a redshirt freshman, two are sophomores, six are juniors, one is a red-shirt junior and there is one senior and one red-shirt senior.

The Cards have a six game win streak that they are currently riding on and six games remaining in the regular season. The ACC does not have a conference post-season tournament...the winner is determined  by the regular season standings.

Another question I get asked a lot is who are the best to ever play Volleyball at UofL? That is a really tough one to answer...but I will attempt to give you five I think that no one could really argue about...Anna DeBeer, Lola Arsanbekova, Melanie McHenry, Anna Stevenson and Claire Chausee. Feel free to debate any of these...i have four outside hitters in here and a middle blocker. SOME WOULD ADD CARA CRESSE TO THIS LIST...so I will as #6

Wishing the best of luck and nothing but straight set wins for our VolleyCards the rest of the season and a "natty"

WBB hosts Colorado tonight

Louisville women's basketball (1-1) hosts Colorado tonight in action at the KFC YUM! Center. The Cards are ranked #22 in the lateset DI NCAA rankings and Colorado beat New Mexico by 25 last Thursday night, so it couid be a tough one for Walz's crew.

The Buffs play in the Big 12 and are not in the current DI Top 25.

Game time is 7 p,m, and if you can't attend , it'll be on ACCNX

WBB, Volleyball on Sunday Menu -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WALZBALL HOSTS NKU, VOLLEYCARDS TRAVEL TO WAKE FOREST.

If the NFL isn't quite your bag...you hava a couple of nice options today on the Louisville women's sports side...Laura Ziegler and crew wait for one of the "KU's" to arrive (NKU) and the Meske Maraders go to the town named after two cigarettes (or was it vice versa) to play net games with the tall guy in the hat who calls himself a deacon. and a demon one...at that.

WBB

A 2 p.m. tip for the Cardinal hoops gang against Jeff Walz old alma mater when Northern Kentucky travels down 1-71 to face the #20 ranked Cards. NKU (0-1)  visited Marshall to begin their season and fell to the Thundering Herd 68-53. I know, Thundering Herd doesn't really seem like an appropriate name for women's basketball players but they don't have any other nicknames they go by.

Cards fans might remember Lindsey Duvall graduated from Bullitt East to join Louisville, left Louisville to go to NKU. Well,  she graduated and is now the Director of Basketball Operations for the Norse.  If you go far enough back in the annuals of Cardinal Couple articles...you'll find an interview I did with her and her Bullitt East head coach Chris Stallings.

Her Norse leaders after one game are guards Taysha Ruston (11.0) and Mia Jordon (10.0) a game after one game.

NKU participates ni the Horizon League and were picked to finish sixth in it in a preseason coaches poll. The Norse head coach is Jeff Hans and he is starting his second season at NKU.

Laura Ziegler

The Cards are led by St. Joseph transfer Laura Ziegler with 16 points a game. Other Cards in double figures are transfer Skylar Jones and Imari Berry.

If you can't make it down to the KFC YUM! Center for this one, it is available on the ACCNX and Nick Curran will have the play-by-play on 93.9 FM and 970 AM. Curran returns as the Cards WBB radio play-by-play guy and Sara White handles Internet analysis duties.

Enjoy the game, we'll recap what we saw here at Cardinal Couple tomorrow.

VOLLEYBALL

Cards Volleyball gets the first start of the day for women's squads at Louisville with a 1 p.m. contest at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. .

The VolleyCards are ranked #7 in the latest NCAA DI poll and 19-4 on the season continue ACC play against the Demon Deacons. Wake is 5-8 in conference and 11-13 overall .

This one can be found on ACCNX as well

The Cards are on a five-game win streak since the Oct 19 five set loss to Pitt and 11-2 in the ACC...good for third place in the conference standings.

We'll also recap this one in the Monday Cardinal Couple.

VOLLEYBALL BESTS NORTHERN IOWA -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

#4  CARDS GO TO 6-1

i was ready to start today's article with the sentence "Cards knock off UNI" but then thought it sounds like "you and I" have played the Volleyball and so, I thought i might talk about the two CC's

Mind you, this is not about the Cardinal Couple's (sometime referred to as C.C.) two major forms of communication (internet articles and podcasts) but a shorten reference to Cara Cresse and Chloe Chicoine who led Louisville Volleyball with 13 kills each in their Saturday night win over The University of Northern Iowa in Omaha, Neb. at the Bluejay Invitational.

Setter Navelis Cabello had 42 assist and 15 digs for the Cards and Louisville held UNI to .167 hitting.

The match was also  contest between the two Petersen sisters, Payton (UofL) and Jayden (UNI). Keeping it a family affair, their mom (Bobbi). Bobbi has done pretty well as a Volleyball head coach, amassing a record of 583-209. She also played at UNI.

SET 1

Louisville took control early at 14-9 and was able to stretch that to 19-12, and despite three UNI blocks late in the game, was able to win the first set 25-18.

SET 2

The Cards flew out to an early 7-4 lead, but UNI rallied and got back to an 8-8 tie. The Panthers led 11-10 before Louisville went up 15-13. UNI would not say die, though, and tied it agains at 15-15. The  regained the lead at 21-20..but after a Cards time out, the Birds finished the set with a 5-3 advantage and took Set Two 25-23

SET 3

This set was a close one the majority of the way with ties at 10-10, 13-13 and 19-19. UNI grabbed a 22-19 lead, though...and ended up winning 25-21.

SET 4

Louisville established a large 9-5 lead early on a 5-1 run, and pushed that out to a 15-10 edge. The Cards went to a 23-16 lead before taking game and match 25-17.

The Cards will have Rice for their next opponent (and we don' t mean Uncle Ben, Minute Rice, A Roni or that boil-in-the-bag stuff) today at noon. This one is also in Omaha as a part of the Bluejay Invitational. It's a 1 p.m. affair and will be shown live on YouTube. I've not tried watching a Louisville Volleyball event before on YouTube, so we'll see how that goes.

The link is:

It looks to be  busy day for UofL women's sports today, with Field Hockey and Womens Soccer also in action.

Have a great Sunday

#4 ranked VolleyCards to face #2 Texas -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

MATCHUP IN FT. WORTH WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Yes, it is very early in the NCAA DI Volleyball season for such an important matchup but #4 Louisville faces a tough test when they  face the #2 Texas Longhorns on Wednesday night in the Shiners Children's Showdown at 9 p.m. ET.

The match will be shown on ESPN. The natch will be in Dickies Arena, The arena holds 14,000 for Volleyball.

The two haven't locked horns (sorry, bad pun) since they met for the 2022 National Championship match that Texas took in three straight sets. All told, in five meetings between the two powerhouse programs, the Longhorns hold a 4-1 edge. The Cards got their lone victory in their first ever Elite eight...back in 2019.

Jerritt Elliott

While Dan Meske is in his first year as the Cards skipper, Texas head Volleyball coach Jerritt Elliott is in his 25th season as the Texas head coach. The record for Elliott is impressive at 611-121.  He also has three national championships. The Longhorns are located in Austin, so they'll have a three hour trip to Ft. Worth (flight time one hour), but nothing like the 861 mile trip for the Cards (flight time 2 hr. 30 minutes).

Nya Burton (on right)

Nya Burton is on the Texas roster as a middle blocker. You might remember her from Louisville Manual, where she was the 2022 Ms. Kentucky Volleyball and a AVCA First Team All-American.

Stafford

Torrey Stafford leads Bevo's bunch in kills...Volleyball fans will remember her from Pitt. She has 63 in 15 sets.

The Longhorns are 4-0 on the season...with wins over #12 Creighton, #8 Wisconsin, Rice and #6 Stanford. The won their first two games in Madison,WI. and then returned to Texas to beat Rice in Houston before taking the home opener over Stanford in a close 3-2 match.

Ella Swindle is the assists leader with 118.

Vander Wal

The Horns also have Abby Vander Wal, an outside hitter out of Elmhurst, IL. She was the 2024 Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year.

Here is a great clip about Vander Wal. The Cards and Nebraska were high on her, but Texas eventually got her. She has a brother who plays basketball at Furman.

Payton Peterson

For the Cards, Payton Peterson leads the way with 49 kills. Nayelis Cabello has 117 assists in 10 sets and they are are 4-0, winning 13 of the 14 sets they have played. Match wins were against Auburn, Morehead St. St. John's and Illinois

This should be a good one and Case will have the recap in the Thursday Cardinal Couple.

Volleyball defeats alumnae 3-1 -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 VOLLEYBALL VS. ALUMNAE

(photo from UofL)

Another 2025 UofL sports squad on the women's side has participated in a match against the alums, and in the volleyball version of the "current vs. old" the 2025-26 squad defeated the alums 3 sets to 1.

The current squad took the first two sets, and the exact score for these...the report is that the currents defeated the alumnae in each... 25-12 in the first and 25-15 in the second match. The alumnae did rally, from reports, to win the third match 25-23.

The squads requested to play a fourth set, and in was a shortened set that the team defeated the alumnae 15-8.

Reports we were able find indicate that Cara Cresse had a good match for the current squad with seven kills and six blocks. Ava Utterback also had a good match for the current squad with eight kills.

The exhibition was a sell out at the L&N Federal Credit Union facility with slightly over 1000 fans getting to watch the action.

The alumnae All-Stars were led by Claire Chausee with 10 kills and Aiko Jones getting six kills.

Anna DeBeer and Sarah Drury Petkovic coached the Alumni All Stars and the roster included Jones, Chausee, Elena Scott, Emily Scott, Charitie Luper, Elle Glock and Jamie Vasilou,

The season officially starts for Volleyball when they face auburn on Aug. 29th.

Cresse and Chicoine named to USA Volleyball 2025 team -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS MAKE USA U 23 PAN AMERICAN TEAM

Not normally a lot of Louisville Volleyball news in late May to report on, as a rule, but we do have news on two returning Cards and their inclusion onto the 2025 USA U 23 Pan American squad.

Chloe Chicoine,  junior outside hitter and Cara Cresse, a redshirt senior middle blocker have been name the the USA squad for the 2025 Pan American games.

Both players have a ton of experience to offer the USA squad. Chicoine, who transferred in to Louisville from Purdue to join the Cards, was on the 2023 U 21 USA, squad...where she helped USA win the gold, earning MVP and best outside hitter awards. In 2022, she was, again on the USA Pan Am squad and was also on the 2021 USA Girls U18 National Team and a part of the squad that won bronze in the U18 World championships.

Cresse was on the 2024 USA women's national team that played in the Pan Am Cup Final Six and won silver.
18 players will report for the training camp July 18-25 and twelve will be selected from there to represent USA. Other players from the area invited were Eva Hudson and Brooke Bultema both from University of Kentucky

Chicoine and Cresse are expected to be major players for new Louisville head coach Dan Meske, along with transfer setter from Univ. of Washington Molly Wilson, returnee Reese Robins, Nayelis Cabello, Alanna Bankson and Jessica Drapp. Four incoming freshmen will vye for time on the court for the #3 ranked Cards...middle hitter Kaylissa Blackshear, setter Hanna Kenny, middle blocker Addison Makun and outside hitter Chloe Meester.

The annual Red and Black Scrimmage of the Cards will be in mid-August, at the on-campus LNFCU facility.

DeBeer named CSC Academic ALL-AMERICAN OF THE YEAR for DI Volleyball -- Wednesday CARDINAL COUPLE

 DeBeer Honored by DI Volleyball

If you are a Louisville volleyball fan, we really don't need to tell you what Anna DeBeer has meant to Louisville Volleyball since she arrived on campus for the 2020 season. A product of the successful programs out of Louisville Assumption High School, DeBeer was named ACC Freshman of the year and made the AVCA All-Region First Team.

But, there is a different side to DeBeer...one that doesn't get nearly enough recognition...and that is the academic side.  She graduated with a 3.92 GPA in health and human performance exercise science.

She also made the first team all AVCA squad last year.  last season. As she works toward her Masters of Business Administration, she leaves her career on the college court behind as possibly one of the best ever volleyballers to don a UofL uniform

She was also drafted by the Indy Ignite squad in the PVF -- Professional volleyball Federation. She's still out of competition, recovering from the effects of her ankle injury in the 2024 Division I National Semifinal match against Pittsburgh.

On the Indy squad with her is teammate/libero Elena Scott, who played at Louisville with DeBeer for  several years.

We have no doubt that once DeBeer recovers from the ankle injury, she going to do great things in the PVF, and you can be assured that the Cardinal Couple crew will be following her career and reporting on her successes here. We'll miss her on the Cardinals court, but know she's on her way to greater things.

The Ignite was successful in their first outing of the season, defeating Orlando 3-1 in the Fishers Event Center,. They return to the center Thursday night to face Grand Rapids.

It's the long awaited rematch....Louisville Volleyball vs Pitt tonight --- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

#1 VS #3...LOUISVILLE FACES TOP RANKED PITT IN VOLLEYBALL TONIGHT

It's been a month since the last Louisville vs Pittsburgh Volleyball match, all the way back to 10/15/24...when the two faced in Pittsburgh in the "Pete" ...aka Petersen Event Center. A five set match, where Pitt took the first set 25-21, Louisville won set two 28-26, set three was won by Pitt 25-17, the fourth set went to the Cards 25-22 and the fifth and deciding set fell Pitt's wys 15-12.

The Cards were led by Anna DeBeer's 22 kills. Charitie Luper had 19 for the Cards. Elle Glock had 38 assist for thee Cards.

It was the third straight five set win for Pitt over the Cards.  Olivia Babcock had 22 kills for Pitt and Rachel Fairbanks had 48 assists for the Panthers.

One thing that may have led to the Cards five set loss was the 10 hitting errors by DeBeer. That number needs to drop in half if Louisvlle is going to knock off the visitors to the KFC YUM! Cenetr tongiht . Olivia Babcock had seven hitting errors for the Panthers in the first match.

The squads hitting %'s weren't all that spectacular.  in the first go-around. Louisville barely cleared a 1 for 5 success rate with .203...Pitt was slightly better at .262.

It is a "red out" so...you know what to do....if you are going.

As far as coverage, we'll have Jared taking photos and Jeff sitting in the stands. I am uncertain as to  whether Sonja and I will receive media credentials or not...I had not heard anything as of 9 p.m. Tuesday night. I will comment no further on that....the request has been made for press row and parking.  We'll either go or watch on cable

Dani Busboom Kelly previewed the match Monday, HERE'S what she had to say. I could not find any pregame video about the contest from Pitt's head coach Dan Fisher.

The contest will be on the ACC Network if you can't attend.  7 p.m.

So, can the Cards even the score on the season and win this one over UPitt?  I am no expert on volleyball, that's is our man Jeff's forte...Here are his five keys to a Cardinal win...

1) Serve and pass. (This is the evergreen selection for any 'keys to the game') but in Volleyball, serving aggressively on offense and good first ball contact in serve and receive is important.

2) Blockng. Louisville lives and dies by the block. SMU beat Pitt by blocking well.

3) Take the heat out. I think the chippiness between these two teams gets UofL a bit off their game. Keep the emotions in check.

4) "It's just like any other game" Can't let the magnitutde of this game overwhelm .

5) Similar to number 4, forget about what is ahead ...don't be too eager for Thanksgiving, or Stanford, or NCAA selection...stay mentally in this game right now.

Let's hope the  Cards can prevail. It should be an exciting one.

CARDS TAKE TWO ON SUNDAY -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

VOLLEYBALL AND WBB GET WINS ON THE ROAD ON SUNDAY

A wild comeack win for Louisville WBB down in Orlando against USF and a huge, straight set romp for Louisville Volleyball in Blacksburg against the VT Hokies is our Monday morning news.

WBB

"write it down...three!"

The
Cards put three in double figures with the hard fought win in Orlando. it was "O" in Orlando. Cochran co-led the way for UofL in scoring with 13 points... (along with Imari Berry) and Jayda Curry added 12.

A horrible start for the Cards, who trailed by as much as 11 in the first quarter at 16-5, before coming back to cut the USF lead to three, on a three from Berry, that made it 21-18 with eight seconds left in the quarter. Berry had a strong start to this one, with 11 first quarter points. VT was hitting their shots, the Cards were not, but,at least showing signs of life by the end of the quarter.

The Cards took the lead 22-21 about a minute and a half into the second quarter, on a Cochran putback and a 10-3 run stretched Lousville's lead to nine at 33-24 on a jumper by Nyla Harris with about four minutes left in the half. . That lead stayed at nine after an Isla Jufferman's layup with 1:38 until half, and another Jufferman's layup made the halftime tally 39-29 in favor of the Cards.

Louisville built the lead to 43-30 early in the third quarter after a turnaround Cochran jumper. The Bulls were not done yet, though, and were able to cut the UofL lead to six with about four minutes left in the third quarter on a three, and hit another three near the end of the quarter to trail by seven at 53-46 going into the fourth..

The Bulls whttled the Cards lead to four with four minutes gone in the fourth quarter, and later went on a 6-0 run late to grab a 59-58 lead over UofL with 1:47 to play. Louisville regained the lead ,though,  at 60-59 on a Ja'Leah Williams layup and got four free throws from Jada Curry in the final five seconds to give the Cards the 64-60 win.

The Cards played 11 players in the win and all of them scored except for Merissah Russell and Anaya Hardy.

With the win, Louisville goes to 4-2 on the season and willl next take the court on Nov 30th.in Boulder,CO against the Colorado Buffs. With the neutral site win, he Cards could improve on their #25 rankng in the AP poll and #22 ranking in the Coaches poll.

Box score

VOLLEYBALL

#3
Louisville volleyball completed their Virginia trip with a straight set sweep pf the Hokies in Blacksburg... 25-16, 25-19 and 25-11.

Charitie Luper, PK Kong and Reese Robins had six kills each for UofL,  the Cards used an 8-0 run early in the first set to take a 9-3 lead and were up 15-9 at the media timeout .

The Cards pushed the lead to 18-11 after the timeout... and went up 22-13, then Alanna Bankston had the final three kills for Louisville's 25-16 first set win.

The second set was a close one early and the teams were tied at 13-13 halfway thru second set action.  Louisville battled ahead to lead 20-17, and got the win on a Payton Petersen kill to make ithe final score 25-19.

It was all Cards in the final set, a 7-3 start, and they built that to 11-5. Petersen got hot serving and the Cards pushed the lead to 15-7. UofL easily won the third, set, going on a 10-4 run to end the set and match on a Sofia Maldonado-Diaz ace serve.  25-11 Cards.

Louisville got the win easily, even with playing  All-American Anna DeBeer sparingly, in to sets,DeBeer finished with just two kills, a season low for her.

Next up for the Cards...,the lojng-awaited rematch vs. #2 Pittsburgh, on the 27th.

WSOC falls to #6 Stanford in final seconds -- VB vs WF -- FH vs Duke -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Hello readers and welcome to the weekend.  As I was preparing this morning's write up last night during the soccer match, I was getting excited to report that the Cardinals were about to draw in a nationally ranked match until they didnt do that... in a shocking fashion, UofL dropped to the #6 Stanford Cardinal in the final 3 seconds of the match.

Soccer

Photos: Jared Anderson

Cards 0 - Cardinal 1

The WSoc program dropped another match this one, in stunning fashion as UofL allowed the only goal of the match in the final 3 seconds just as we at Cardinal Couple were about to let out a sigh of relief.   Those with eyes on the game report that the Cards may have been looking for some call from the officials which led to a lapse on defense and allowed the Cardinal to get ahead and challenge Erynn Floyd 1 on 1.

The Cards outshot Stanford 3-2 in the first half before the visitors put in some fresh legs at the end of the match to get off to the races for the winning score.  Lumi Kostmayer scored the lone goal in just 8 minutes on the pitch.   The Cards finished with just 5 shot attempts with one on goal.

I'm sure that was a not so fun chat in the locker room following this missed opportunity.   There's just not a whole lot to say following a loss like that one.

The #4 ranked volleyball team will welcome Wake Forest to L&N Arena this weekend for a 7p.m. first serve.

The Deacon Demons are 10-7 and 2-4 in the ACC, with the Louisville leading the series 15-2, one of those losses coming in the last meeting 2-3.

Wake Forest has four individuals holding spots in the ACC top-10 categories:   Tina Grkovic – 7th in blocks (1.27/set)  Dior Charles – 9th in blocks (1.21/set)   Paige Crawford – 9th in service aces (27 total)  Emma Farrell – 9th in digs (3.70/set)

UofL will honor the 2024 seniors following Friday's 3 p.m. game against #11 Duke. That class includes Filippa Niebuhr and Caroline Pusey along with fifth-year seniors Mia Duchars, Brandelynn Heinbaugh and Aimee Plumb.

Louisville enters the weekend with a 5-9 record and a 1-5 mark in ACC play, good for seventh in league standings. Duke leads the all time series 14-9.

The cards fell to the Blue Devils November 1, 2023 - Duke won 1-0 in the semifinals of the ACC Championship. The Blue Devils also won last year's regular season meeting 2-1 in Durham.

#11 Duke enters the weekend with an 8-4 record, tied for third in the ACC with a 4-1 mark in league play. The Blue Devils are currently on a four-game win streak - all shutouts.

Goalkeeper Frederique Wollaert leads the NCAA with a 0.35 goals against average while Alaina McVeigh paces the team with eight goals and has dished out one assist for 17 points.

Final UofL  0  UK   6

Just reporting the score at this time.. the programs usually do not record much from exhibition games and it looks like something we dont wanna hear much about anyways, lets just hope the Cards had some lessons to learn from this one and look ahead towards a successful spring matchup with the Cats.

As Always,
Go Cards!

AVCA Recap: Nebraska beats UK, Cards take down #3 Wisconsin in 4 games -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

5 Hours of Volleyball in KFC YUM! Center

The joint was jumping, On Tuesday night in the KFC Yum! Center as  #6 Louiville defeated #3 Wisconsin in four sets and #2 Nebraska downed #9 Kentucky in four sets also.

Nebraska Over Kentucky

This match began the evening and the lower bowl in the KFC Yum! Center was full for the 7 p.m. tip off. Nebraska dominated UK 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20. I didn't keep specific stats or a recap on this one, watching it on cable (ESPN2) in my living room at home, but Nebraska did double the number of blocks UK had (18-9) and hit .258 to UK .139

Three Nebraska players finished in double figures in kills, and, despite a second match slip up, Nebraska look like much the better squad, especially after halftime.

A 10 page recap (seriously) is available at HUSKERS DOWN CATS is you want more.

Volleyball Roster Review - Sunday Cardinal Couple

 Volleyball Roster Review

What we here at Cardinal Couple call the summer slump is in full swing, and while it can be a little difficult to find topics to write about, it does give us the opportunity to review some information about the upcoming sports seasons and the teams.

Women's Basketball are being overachievers this year, with their full roster with pictures of each player, including the newcomers, already posted.

We have no such luck with Volleyball, but I'm pretty sure I can put together what the full roster will be.  So with the caveat that it's not officially official, lets take a look at what your 2024 VolleyCards will look like on the court.

Exits

First of all, let's look at who has departed.

Ceci Rush, who mostly played as a service specialist, graduated and decided not to use her Covid year.  Ceci is a native of the Louisville area, so I expect we'll still see her at LNFCU Stadium cheering on her teammates.

Ayden Barlett, also graduated and elected not to use her Covid year.  Seen on the court occasionally as a service specialist, but also in a full DS role.  AB has landed a assistant coaching gig at Louisianna Tech.  We wish her and the La Tech Bulldogs a great season.

Alexis Finnvold, has transfered to West Virginia and will be a setter on their squad.  I suspect this is a change to look for more playing time as Louisville has two good setters that will be on the squad this year including an incoming freshman, and it was unlikely that Finnvold would get much time on the court as a result.

Nina Moorer, has also departed, landing at Texas State University, which is a bit closer to home for her.  Primarily a left side hitter, and again, Louisville has a deep bench for left side hitting.  Combine that with having experienced a couple of,  really relatively minor injuries that nonetheless have kept her off the court, she decided her best prospects were elsewhere.

Aiko Jones, after six years of being on the Louisville squad, alas has no college eligibility left.  Now being married to an American citizen, she no longer is in the US on a student visa and can actually get gainful employment.  Consequently, she has put some of her photography skills to work with Churchill Downs during Derby, and is helping host various volleyball camps over the summer.  She is looking to claim a roster spot on one of the fledgling professional volleyball leagues here in the states.  She was spotted sitting on the baseline of a Columbus Fury match in the PVF, sitting with, I believe, the president of the Fury.  A spot on the Fury would be particularly great for her as her wife is working on a post-graduate degree at Ohio State.

Brigitta Petrenko, also has no eligibility left.  I don't have much about her current whereabouts or plans, but I'll be keeping an eye out at the Hungarian Women's National Team and suspect she'll pop up there.

Incoming

UofL signed three freshman to National Letters of Intent in the fall, and at least two of them joined the team on campus in January.

Nayellis Cabello, a 6'0" setter from Florida arrived in Louisville in January, a sure sign of her commitment, to leave Florida weather to come to Louisville weather in January.  She and Elle Glock split time in the spring season at setting.  Both are excellent, and I expect this to be something of a position battle with training camp starts.

Ava Utterback, from the Indianapolis area, is a 6'0" left side hitter.  She also joined the squad in January, so we were able to see her play in spring play.  She's definitely got some hops, and a good pop in her swing.  With the long line of left side hitters on the Louisville squad right now, I wouldn't expect Utterback to get a huge amount of time on the court, but we might see her occasionally.

Payton Peterson comes to Louisville from Iowa.  This is the signee that I don't know if she is on campus yet.  Another left side hitter, and at only 5'10" you'd think she'd be at a disadvantage to get time in, again, the long line of left side hitters, but I saw her play in the Under Armour Next All-American event, and she's got the hops and the pop to hold her own.  She is also quite competent as an all-around six rotation player.

Sam Untiedt did not sign an NLI on signing day, suggesting she might be officially classified as a walk-on, but she's apparently impressive.  A 5'8" Libero/DS, she bolsters that already good crew.  I haven't had the opportunity to see her in actual action yet, but she has plenty of Minnesota state accolades along with a number of national All-American team nods from the likes of AAU and Breakdown.  She has joined the team on campus, I believe at the beginning of June.

Sofia Maldonado Diaz, will be a 5th year transfer to Louisville from Arizona.  She comes to UofL from Guadalajara, Mexico, and is a 6'0" primarily right side hitter, though it sounds like she can swing from just about anywhere on the front row, left, right, and center.  I haven't seen her play, yet, but I suspect this could be another position battle with her and Reese Robins.  Or, maybe we'll see both of them in a 6-2 offense.

Returners

On the left side, we get Anna DeBeer back for her Covid year.  Charitie Luper will also be a senior on the left side with no Covid option available for her.  And filling out this long line of left sides, Alanna Bankston will be a sophomore.

In the middle, it's a replay of last year with Phekran "PK" Kong and Cara Cresse likely being the starters, with Hannah Sherman ready to jump in when called on.

On the right, Reese Robins returns, and with Maldonado Diaz, I'll say it's nice to have options on the right.  Who gets the starting role?  Your guess is as good as mine.  How much has Robins developed and toned up in the off-season?  Maldonado Diaz is mostly a question mark for me.  So we'll see.

For setter, I think Elle Glock is going to find herself pressured to maintain the starting role, here.  I love hearing Jerome on the PA have fun with her hometown name of Wahoo, Nebraska, but Cabello may very well beat her out for the starting lineup intro.

Finally, for DS and Libero, it feels like we have a billion players in this role, but it's not that much of a logjam.  Elena Scott will be back and I think the only question about the Libero jersey is who gets it after Scott graduates this year.  Contenders are Kamden Schrand, Jessica Drapp, and Molly Urban.  If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Schrand, but we don't have to worry about that until next summer.

Conclusion

Without the roster being officially official, I could be missing someone, but I think I have everyone that will be on the roster in the fall to give you a feel of what this team will look like.

As announced recently, Louisville will be part of kicking off the season in the AVCA First Serve Showcase when we play Wisconsin.  Nebraska and Kentucky will get the actual first serve in the earlier game of the evening.

And, of course, the Cards will really be shooting for a top four seed in the NCAA tournament at the end of the year which would ensure that all of their post-season play would be downtown at the KFC Yum! Center Arena since Louisville will be hosting the Volleyball Final Four this year.

There's quite a year ahead for this squad, and it has the potential to be really amazing.  The team has some great personnel and are gearing up for another deep run in the tournament.  I'm excited for the season to get started.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

A good crew was on the CCRHP yesterday, with Case and Daryl both returning from some absences to join Paulie and me.  We understand, life overall gets busy in the summer.

Soccer released their schedule, so we had some discussion on that, which evolved into some exploration of coaching hot seats, and finally touched a bit on the Volleyball scheduling news with the AVCA First Serve Showcase.
