WSOC hosts Coastal Carolina -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

4-1 KICKIN' CARDS FACE CHANTICLEERS AT LYNN TONIGHT

It has been a good start for Karen Ferguson Dayes and the Louisville women's soccer team, and the "Kickin" Cards look to keep up the scoring frenzy tonight when they bring the Chanticleers from Conway, SC to Bourbon City for a 7:30 p.m. match.

So, what is a Chanticleer? A rooster, whose name literally comes from the French term "sing clear". The Chanticleers are also a American male classic singing ensemble. Oh, yeah...it's also the nickname for Coastal Carolina sports .

Away in the Manger - The Chanticleers

I doubt this group of Chanticleers that assemble on Floyd Street tonight will do much singing, unless it is the blues, when facing the Cardinals. They are 1-2 on the season and have scored just two goals in three games, against the likes of Richmond, UNCW and Belmont. They are also 0-2 at home.

Louisville, on the other hand is 4-1 and has only lost to 3-1 Vanderbilt at Vandy. The Cards have 25 goals amassed in their five games and are led by Mackenzie Geigle with four goals.

Amelia Swinarski has nine assists and that happens to led the nation.

It should be another Cardinals romp in this battle of birds tonight.

LOUISVILLE FIELD HOCKEY HOSTS OHIO BOBCATS

Justine Sowry has her Field Hockey squad in action early today with a match against the Ohio Bobcats.

The Bobcats come in after a 5-0 loss at Michigan State.

This one on ACCNX. at noon

While I am speaking of Cardinals...boos and hisses to the ACC announcer who called the Louisville squad the Cardinal all night long on the ACC broadcast. . We are not Stanford (The Cardinal).Where do they come up with these guys?...when there are plenty of good announcers locally who could do the broadcasts justice.

Tonight'
s game goes to the ACC Network Extra, which means online...and maybe we'll get some announcers who know who we are.

OK, rant over. Enjoy tonight's game and most likely tomorrow off, if you are still in the working class.

And have a great rest of the Labor Day Weekend.

Mia McGrath leads Clemson in kills with 140 on the season.   Devan Taylor has 1516 career digs to sit at third all-time. In the last two, the Orange lost 1-0 in a shootout loss to #9 Duke on Sunday and prior to that, the Orange picked up a 1-0 win over Wake Forest on Friday.

Bo van Kempen leads the team with six goals and two assists in eight games while Willemjin Boogert has two goals and four assists in nine games for the Orange.  Louise Pert carries a 1.57 goals against average and has helped Syracuse to three shutouts.

Field Hockey, Soccer, and Volleyball All In Action - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Swimming At SMU

The Swimming and Diving team competed Friday and yesterday at the SMU Classic.  A six team competition, the Cardinal Women finished in 3rd place overall.

UofL had several winners of races.  Paige Hetrick topped the field in the 200 backstroke.  Gabi Albiero finished first in the 100 freestyle with Christiana Regnauer touching first in the B-final.

Albiero, Regenauer, Tristen Ulett, and Hetrick teamed up to win the 200 free relay.

USC won the women's competition with 325 total points.  Michigan took second with 311, with Louisville finishing with 304.

The SMU Classic was only the 2nd meet for Swim and Dive, and the first multi-team event for the year.

Softball Beats EKU Twice

Softball continues their fall ball exhibition schedule.  Yesterday saw them face off with Eastern Kentucky University twice, and win both of them.

Our amazing photog, Jared, who seems to be able to fit 48 hours into each day, was in attendance.

The Cards won both games against EKU yesterday, the first by a score of 2-1, and the second, 8-2.  Lots of different fielding looks in these, Louisville pitched just about every pitcher in the bullpen with the exception of Taylor Roby.

On the injury front, Easton Lotus is still out recovery from the ACL that she suffered in the spring.  Hannah File looks to be fully back and playing at 100%, and Makayla Hurst saw playing time.

The fall ball schedule continues today with Kentucky coming to visit Ulmer Stadium at 1pm.  Admission is free, which is typical for Softball in any case with the exception of games against Kentucky.

More Softball pictures from Jared are at the end of the article.

Field Hockey

Continuing their road trip, Field Hockey heads to Lynchburg, VA to play 16th ranked Liberty.  The game will get underway at noon.

The Flames are at 8-4 on the season so far with no really awful losses.  The worst is probably to William and Mary, but they're not bad.  Otherwise, they've lost to two different then-1st-ranked teams in Northwestern and UNC and a 25th ranked James Madison.

They are mostly waltzing through the AAC conference, with a 10-0 beatdown of Georgetown, 4-0 over UConn, and 5-0 wins over Qunnipiac and Villanova.

Daniella Rhodes is the biggest offensive threat for Liberty, reaching the back of the cage 10 times on the season so far.

Look for Azul Iritxity Irigoyen of Argentina in goal.

Field Hockey needs to start putting together some wins.  While this is out of conference, Liberty are still a solid team.  After losing Friday to Wake Forest, Louisville is going to be falling down into bubble territory for the NCAA tournament, or maybe out of the bottom of it if they don't start putting some marks in the win column.  The path doesn't get any easier in conference, of course, as every team in the ACC conference is a perennial threat.  Duke, Boston College, and Syracuse are the remaining conference games, and they're all ranked teams, as is typical in ACC play.

Being at Liberty, today's game is only available on ESPN+.

Soccer

Dr Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium plays host to 5-5-3 Boston College today.  Both teams will be looking to take a step upwards from the lower tiers of the ACC standings.

BC spreads their offense among several players, with Sam Smith leading the way with five goals on the season, but Emily Sapienza, and Ella Richards aren't far behind with four and three, respectively.

Wiebke Willebrandt of Germany, will likely be in goal with 51 saves and 19 goals against on the season.

Soccer also gets underway at noon and is on ACC Network.  For both Soccer and Softball, the crisp fall weather for the day should be great for going out an catching the competition.

Volleyball

Lastly, we have Volleyball in Syracuse today.  This one gets underway at 1pm, and is on ACC Network Extra streaming.

The Cuse are 8-7 overall, and 4-1 in conference with Notre Dame somehow knocking them out of the tie for the top spot in conference on Friday.  (Notre Dame isn't great, this year)  Friday's match between Syracuse and Notre Dame was a battle between two first year coaches.  Bakeer Ganesharatnam has taken over from the retiring, probably for good this time, Leonid Yelin, while Salima Rockwell takes over from Mike Johnson, who's services were no longer required at ND (he landed as assistant coach at Stanford).

Polina Shemanova of St. Petersburg Russia, is the name you will hear a lot in connection with Syracuse volleyball.  She's the offensive powerhouse of the team, hitting at a .249 clip on the season, but getting the bulk of the swings.  She isn't a terrible threat on the blocking side of the equation, however.  The other eastern European threat recruited by Yelin is Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk, of Zhaporizhia, Ukraine.  She is only hitting at a .211 average, but getting the second most swings.

Despite the Orange's success thus far in conference play, they shouldn't pose too much of a threat to Louisville.  I'm sure Dan Meske will have a blocking plan in place that will keep Shemanova in sight at all times, and shutting her down should slow the whole Syracuse team down quite a bit.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

Daryl, Jared, Paulie, and myself were on the call yesterday.  I was starting to feel some side effect from a late Friday afternoon Covid and Flu shot, but the other three were chipper and in top form.  We all had fun as always, and had some good discussions primarily about the big three fall sports, Field Hockey, Soccer, and Volleyball.

Fall Trio of Teams In Action - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Fall Trio of Teams All In Action

All three of the major women's team sports at UofL are in action today after at least a day of rest yesterday.

Field Hockey

The one with sticks get it started with an 11am pass back.  They're continuing the ACC vs Ivy League weekend hosted by North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  The opponent today is Princeton and it can be viewed on ACC Network Extra.

The Tigers are 13th in the Field Hockey preseason coaches poll (the week one poll will be released Tuesday), and they have only played one game thus far before today.  That one was a close loss, 4-3 against perennial powerhouse, and 2nd ranked, North Carolina on Friday.

It's hard to know too much of what to expect from a team this early in the season, in Friday's game against UNC, all of Princeton's three scores came on penalties, two were penalty corners, and one was a penalty stroke.  Given Louisville's challenges with converting on penalty corners in the past few years, this could be a game of contrasts, with Princeton playing for the fouls in the circle to get a set play, and Louisville wheeling and spinning trying to get scores in open play.

It is expected that this weekend will be the only time Louisville will play on this field this year as North Carolina will be coming to Trager for their conference matchup with the Cards.

After this fifth game of the season opening road trip, the Cards will be returning to get the home slate opened up with five games in the friendly confines of Trager Stadium, including the above UNC game.

Women's Soccer

Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes has been hanging out with her squad in Harrisonburg, VA for the second half of the week.  After playing Memphis there Thursday, they play their hosts, James Madison University today, starting at 1pm.  You'll need an ESPN+ subscription to watch.

JMU is 3-1-1 on the young season.  They started of with the draw hosting VCU, then followed that up with their trio of wins.  The first was an easy cruise to victory, 4-0 against Morehead St. in Kentucky, then 1-0 over Charlotte in Charlotte, and 2-0 over La Salle in Philadelphia.  Continuing the road trip, 5th ranked Virginia handed them an 0-2 loss in Charlottesville.

The first Virginia score ended a nearly 430 minute stretch of scoreless playing time by JMU stretching back to last season, so we should expect a stout defensive set, although we can see from the scores above that they do know how to find the back of the net as well.

Amanda Attanasi is the leading goal scorer for JMU, with a trio so far this season, Sophia Verrechia is next with a pair.

Volleyball

Finally, today, at 2pm and on ACC Network, the volleysquad continue their high pressure non-conference schedule with Ohio State at LNFCU Arena on campus.

The Buckeyes are 8th ranked, a drop of one spot from pre-season after being bested by then number two Texas in the opening weekend.

OSU is in town for the Cardinal Classic which kicked off Friday with Louisville vs San Diego in an exciting match between top 15 teams.  The Toreros and Buckeys played yesterday in what seemed, from livestats, to be quite a lively match.  SDU swept OSU, but had to use some extra points to get it done in two of the sets, 25-22, 26-24, 28-26.

Emily Londot is the biggest offensive threat for OSU swinging on the right side.  Gabby Gonzales is the biggest left side hitter, with Rylee Rader being the offensive power in the middle.  Mac Podraza runs the show as the setter.

OSU should be hungry for this one, looking to avoid an 0-4 start to the season that would almost certainly drop them out of the top 10 in rankings, despite having a very high strength of schedule so far.  Louisville, of course, wants to continue their undefeated season, and having seen what its like when the wheels fall of in a disastrous second set on Friday, hopefully they've come through better for it.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

And finally, the CCRHP made another appearance yesterday.  A fast paced show, covering recaps and previews of all three of the above sports, the crew is back into the fall sports routine.  We also managed to get a discussion of the non-conference women's basketball schedule that was released this week in as well.

Plenty of excitement buoyed by wins across the board, Case, Jared, Paulie, and myself all had a good time and hopefully were able to get some good analysis and discussion in there.

2022 UofL Fall Sports Media Day -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Field Hockey, Cross Country, Volleyball and Women's Soccer Meet the Media

Another sports season begins at UofL and another Fall Sports Media Day, where the coaches and the players answer media questions. Back to the soccer meeting room for the 2022 "Meet and Greet" and I was glad to be back in the facility this year. A balky, stubborn train parked on Floyd Street ruined any plans I had in getting there early, so... a last-minute "turn-around" and approach to Lynn Stadium in a southward direction down Floyd Street instead of north got me in the lot at 10:59 for the 11:00 presser.

There was actually a spot to park at the facility  -- a rarity anymore, so I maneuvered in it and walked toward the complex. Field Hockey and Softball S.I.D. Lori Harmon was waiting outside for me and mentioned that she had saved me a spot, as well. This old man's legs are really appreciative of the thoughtfulness of  Lori and the other UofL SID's

Louisville Field Hockey was the first squad to address the media and answer questions. Coach Justine Sowry was flanked by seniors Mattie Tabor and Julie Kouijzer at the teams' table. I've found over the years that the best way to cover these in an article is just to just put the link up where you can hear it -- instead of making a lot of observations and comments on it.

LINK: FIELD HOCKEY 2022 FALL SPORTS MEDIA DAY

Cross Country went next and since Dale Cowper coaches both the men and women's squads, there was a representative for each squad at the podium table with him. Sophomore Lexie Paszkiewic represented the womens' squad student-athletes.

LINK: CROSS COUNTRY 2022 FALL SPORTS MEDIA DAY

Volleyball was the next Fall sport to be heard from and Dani Busboom Kelly had sophomore Elena Scott and senior Amaya Tillman with her to answer questions.

LINK: VOLLEYBALL 2022 FALL SPORTS MEDIA DAY

Women's Soccer was the last group to address the media and Coach Karen Ferguson Dayes had redshirt senior Ravin Alexander and grad student Sarah Hernandez. Since WSOC is the only sport that was there who hs actually already had a competition so far this fall, it was good to here the coach and players observations on how the team looked and performed.

                                                         *************************

Men's soccer was also there and, although we don't cover them -- here's a little bonus for you with their segment:

A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE COACHES, PLAYERS, SID'S, STAFFERS AND INTERNS WHO HELPED PUTTING THE FALL SPORTS MEDIADAY TOGETHER !

JUST A REMINDER,,,

Louisville Women's Soccer gets their regular season started tonight with a 7:30 p.m. match against UIC in Lynn Stadium. It's free admission to soccer this season and the action is fun, fast-paced and full of energy, so "c'mon in for a win in Lynn"

Not So Busy News Day - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Roster Listings Updated

Friday was busy, but there's not a whole lot happening on Saturdays, yet, though we're in the final countdown to activities happening that'll get the weekends hopping again.

The various programs, and particularly the fall sports playing programs, are getting active with plenty going on, just none of yet really outward facing.  One of those rituals that college sports teams all participate in, is picture day.  The first results we see from that are new headshots on updated rosters, and that's all done and dusted for at least the fall sports teams.

The roster pages are a great way to get to know who the new players on the teams are, both incoming freshman and transfers, and thanks to the new headshots, put a face to that name.  It can also be interesting to check out the highlight blurb from last year for your favorite player.  Of course, they're also reference material as we start trying to divine what starting lineups we'll see in the teams.

Of course, some of the photos will be used throughout the year in promotional shots, and they could get displayed on scoreboards, banners, posters, and more.

Photo day isn't just about still photos anymore, though.  UofL loves video bits to help fans get to see a bit of the personality and tidbits about the lives of the players.  These are those fun videos played on scoreboards during breaks in the action.  Some of these videos, or snippets from them, have made it to social media, and it looks like they had fun with them.

WNBA

Let's check in on our Basketball Cards in the pros again.

We've only got eight days left in the WNBA regular season.  The Chicago Sky, looking for back to back championships with Dana Evans have a two game lead over the Las Vegas Aces in the standings. at 24-8.  The Washington Mystics with Myisha Hines-Allen are in fifth, four games back at 20-13.  Atlanta Dream who are unfortunately, again, without the services of AD Durr are in seventh at 14-18.  The rookies and their squads are at the bottom of the listings, Kianna Smith who is back with her fourth go around just this season with the Los Angeles Sparks in second to last sporting a 12-20 record, and Emily Engstler's Indiana Fever bringing up the rear at 5-29.

The Fever were in action yesterday in, what you might guess, based on that record, a 95-91 loss against the Dallas Wings.  Engster played right at half the game, got a three pointer, unfortunately missed a pair of free throws, but contributed well on the defensive side of the ball with a trio of rebounds, a pair of steals, and a blocked shot.

In today's action, Evans and the Sky start it off at 1pm against the 3rd place Connecticut Sun.  Find this one on ABC.  Also, Smith and the Sparks visit Hines-Allen and the Mystics at 3pm on ESPN3 or NBC Sports.  Another interesting matchup that doesn't have any UofL rooting interests is the Aces visiting 4th place Seattle Storm, also at 3pm, and on ABC following the Sky game.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

It was a fearsome foursome pontificating on the podcast yesterday.  Case, back off Covid; Jared, with a variety of maladies, and a healthy Paulie and myself all joined in.  Daryl was off baby-sitting, and I don't think anyone can fault her for being an awesome aunt.

We covered news from Field Hockey, Softball, and Women's Basketball, and we previewed our first competition of the season, the Women's Soccer exhibition against Cincinnati.

It's always a good time, and you can check it out at your favorite podcast directory, or go directly to the source at https://anchor.fm/cardinal-couple/episodes/Fall-Sports-on-the-Horizon-e1m66m1.

WSoc Falls to Duke 1-0 -- FH Senior Day vs #9 Syracuse -- More WBB Watch lists; FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Hello Louisville and hello Halloween weekend!

I cannot believe we are here at the end of fall sports season with Senior Days being held across campus and the kickoff to the winter holidays! Do you have your costume together yet? As of Thursday evening mine went from IL to NY with an expected delivery date of Nov 10 :| So, not looking great on that front.

I do have a back-up plan, however... it'll work out!

Onto the Cardinal news and notes of the land..

WSOC Falls on Senior Day 1-0 Duke

A rainy day in Louisville managed to clear out as the UofL Women's Soccer program began its scheduled events.  I believe Jared and Paulie were out there for coverage and to get pics.. if security let them in.

Louisville moves to 7-7-2 on the year and 3-6-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.  It was a defensive battle between the two ball clubs as #2 Duke managed only 11 shot attempts on the night.   The Cards were down 0-1 at the half when Michelle Cooper found the back of the net. She had another chance at scoring in an open goal but it went wide.

UofL almost tied it up in the 82nd minute when Ruthie Jones left the net, Nina Nicosia had a shot but it was blocked by Duke defender, Katie Groff.   The Cardinals had 6 shots on the nights, one on goal.  Gabby Kouzelos finishes with 257 saves in her career.

FH Senior Day vs #9 Syracuse

The #5 Cards FH squad is back at Trager Stadium for its regular season finale hosting Syracuse today at 3 p.m.  The Cards haven't played a home match since October 4th.

UofL will honor seniors Alli Bitting, Erica Cooper, Mackenzie Karl, Sam Minrath, Camryn Pichea and Katie Schneider prior to Friday's contest versus the 'Cuse.  Cooper, Minrath and Pinchea are Louisville natives.

With a 5-0 mark in ACC play, Louisville has clinched at least a share of the 2021 ACC regular season championship, marking the second straight regular season title for the Cardinals.  Syracuse (9-3) is second in the ACC standings with a 4-1 record in conference play.  A Louisville win would guarantee the outright regular season title and the top seed in the conference championship, while a Syracuse victory would result a tie for the regular season championship and a No. 1 seed for the Orange.   The ACC tournament is being hosted by Syracuse next weekend. The Orange will be fighting for a bye on their home turf. It will be a tough match!

Syracuse has six different players with 4+ goals this season.  They are led by Pleun Lammers with eight. Graduate student Quirine Comans has a team-high 22 points with seven goals, second on the team, and eight assists. Defensively, the Orange have held opponents to 1.0 goals per game on 6.1 shots per game while averaging 3.43 goals per game and 19.4 shots per game on the offensive front.

The game will be televised on the ACC Network.

WBB Kick-Off Luncheon being held Friday afternoon

The hype is real for this squad!  The annual Kick-off Luncheon is being held in Downtown Louisville this afternoon.  Coach Walz celebrated his 50th birthday earlier in the week and talked about being with the Cards for 15 years.. in combo with another contract extension with UofL, it's been a good week for a coach who's obviously excited about his team.

Olivia Cochran Named as 2022 Katrina McClain Award Candidate

University of Louisville women's basketball sophomore forward Olivia Cochran is one of 20 watch list candidates for the 2022 Katrina McClain Award.

Cochran was named to the All-ACC Freshman team last season after playing in 29 games with 25 starts, leading the team with 6.9 rebounds per game. She averaged 20.9 minutes, 9.9 points and 0.8 blocks.

Named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, the annual award in its fifth year recognizes the top power forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Volleyball at Duke Sunday 1p.m.

The Cards will spend Halloween battling the Duke Blue Devils.  The gang will cover this one more on Saturday's recording. TV says it is on the ACCNX.

Have a great holiday weekend, yall
