Lacrosse Cards Look to Take Down Team USA -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

As we're fully into the summer slump now, the news gets more and more sparse. I'm filling in for Daryl today, and I've got the write again tomorrow, so no fair jumping on me about not emptying the coffers in today's column. Daryl should return next week, but, for now, enjoy a look at Cards playing outside of their season.

Team Canada Heads to World Championship Final

Ten representatives from the Louisville lacrosse program went to Maryland last week to begin their representation of their countries. All ten advanced to the knockout stage of the final sixteen teams, but only one of the five teams remains. The team in question is Canada, which is home to six of the ten Cards participating in the tournament. The Canadians, led by Scott Teeter on the bench and featuring Kay Morissette on the field, had to knock out Monica Negron of Puerto Rico and Anna Lottmann of the Czech Republic. Kokoro Nakazawa's Japan team was knocked out by the US in the quarter finals and Stephanie McNamara's Australian squad fell to the Yanks in the semis.

Canada, which is also represented by Allison Daley (assistant coach), Nicole Perroni, Hannah Morris, and Brenna Shanahan, defeated England 11-9 in their semifinal yesterday to advance to the rematch with the US. Kay Morissette had eight draw controls alone, matching the entire total for England. Team Canada and Team USA played each other to open the tournament in a game in which the US took victory 16-11. Team USA is chasing their fourth consecutive title as they will play in their 11th straight gold medal match. In addition to a rematch of the opener, this is also the third straight gold medal match to feature this matchup. Scott Teeter and company will look to finish the job tomorrow at Noon. The Lacrosse World Championship site gives conflicting reports for the television viewing, so be sure to check both ESPN2 and ESPNU around that time to find the game.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Allison Daley Joins Lax -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 Allison Daley Joins Lacrosse Staff

One of these days we'll finish recapping these seasons from last year. Our women's basketball recap keeps getting pushed back as other news falls right onto our lap. It's like the cliff hanger that drags on annoyingly long, but I promise we'll recap their season one of these days. Paulie gave us a nice preview of what 2021-22 Louisville women's hoops will look like yesterday.

Today, we take a look at a spring sport that calls Floyd Street home. Louisville Lacrosse welcomed a new assistant coach to the crew yesterday. Allison Daley will join Coach Scott Teeter's staff. Although Daley holds no relation to Larry Daley and his nighttime magic at the American Museum of Natural History (did you know that movie is 15 years old?!), we expect her to bring her own magic to a talented Cards roster.

The Cards LAX program had Cortnee Daley, an All-Big East selection, who played at Louisville from 2013-16, but she and Allison are not related. Cortnee did register a goal and assist against Canisius, though, with Allison on the Golden Griffs sidelines, back when the Cards played Canisius in Buffalo back in 2016, Louisville winning 15-7.

Allison Daley and Teeter go way back. The former was both a player and an assistant coach under the latter. Daley also served as associate head coach for the Canadian U-19 national team at the 2019 FIL U-19 Women's Field Lacrosse World Championships.

When Teeter left Canisius for Louisville, Daley was promoted to the head coaching role at Canisius, where she has spent the last four seasons. Daley replaces Renee Poullett at Louisville, who left the Cards midseason and took a job as an academic advisor at Cornell University. She's up there hanging out with Andy Bernard. Another I feel old moment: that show's first season premiered 16 years ago.

"We are very excited to add Allison to our staff as an assistant coach," said Teeter. "We have a long history together, as she played for me and has been a member of my staff, so she understands our systems and is familiar with our culture. As a former standout goalkeeper and head coach, she brings extensive knowledge, especially on the defensive side, and will be a tremendous asset for our program."

Teeter now has both Daley and Kay Morissette on his coaching staff, both of whom have coached with him in the past. Things tend to run smoother when you're surrounded by a staff you're familiar with and can trust. Daley's defensive expertise can help Louisville shut down opposing offenses. Many of the losses last season can be credited to opposing teams going on a run at some point in the match. Rachel Florek should continue to command goal and having a beefed up defense around her will make her job that much easier.

We will see if Paulie can set up an interview with Scott Teeter and Allison Daley later this summer and get a feel for her personality and the team's goals for the upcoming season. He has made the preliminary request and gotten a positive answer from Teeter.

Before the spring sports season ended lacrosse was a sport that had been approved for a new video board and revamped sound system. The video board had ongoing issues throughout the season as it had reached the end of its tenure so a new and improved video board will increase the experience at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

WNBA

There were no games last night but we see a pair of WNBA games on the calendar today. Jazmine Jones, Kylee Shook, and the New York Liberty face a struggling Atlanta Dream team at 7:00 on ESPN3. Although MHA is out, her Washington Mystics team hosts a tough Connecticut Sun team at 7:00 on ESPN2.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

Interview with Scott Teeter -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

TEETER GETTING READY TO COACH TEAM CANADA IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

(SCOTT TEETER'S THOUGHTS ON TEAM CANADA, THE RESPONSIBILITY, HIS PLAYERS AND STAFF.)

Q: You’ve been associated with Team Canada since 2011, but you have to be excited for the World Championships coming up in August.

COACH:  “It’s sort of two-fold. Being the defending world champion and having the opportunity to defend our gold medal is phenomenal. But, the most important is hosting the World Cup in Peterborough, Ontario, which is only two hours from where I grew up. It will be the first time that I have coached on Canadian soil.”

Q:What would it be like to defend that world championship in your home country?

COACH:  “I’m excited to show the growth of women’s lacrosse the last decade across Canada. To be able to show that we are world champions to our supporters and our fans would be amazing. Having my friends and family there to support will be great, my grandparents will be in attendance for the first time in my career, which is very special.”

Q: How different is it preparing for this tournament when you have such a short amount of time to prepare?

COACH:  “It seems like we’ve been a camp behind with this team because of some negotiations with the Canadian Lacrosse Association and the Players Association, so we have a bit of a delayed start. Everything is moving quite quickly. We just named the final 18 with alternates a few weeks ago and we have a three-day camp before we hit the World Cup. It’s definitely doable, the players are excited. It’s the most talented and deepest team that we’ve had at the U19 level. The Americans will be one of the teams to beat, but the bullseye will be on our back because we are defending champions. We only have to be them (USA) on a given day and we have enough talent to do so and we’ll have the help of our Canadian fans.

Q:What are some of the strength and weaknesses of the team, and what do you need to do well to defend your title?

COACH:  “We have depth at every position. We have skill and we have our Canadian flare with tons of creativity. There are really no holes on this team. One thing we might not have is that clear cut superstar. We have a lot of talent across the board, but not a superstar and it’s always great to have a superstar players as a coach.”

Q: Nicole Perroni will be a freshman next year at Louisville and is on your Canadian team, which is something she’ll bring to the team?

COACH:  “Nicole brings a lot of grit and determination. What I love about her and her style of play, she has that one foot over the line constantly. She toes that line and leaves it all on the field. We’re going to use her in the transition game, she plays tremendous defense and she’s very athletic. When she has the ball, she can just run with our fastest players. She knows her role on offense and can score some big goals. I think she’s going to have a really good World Cup.”

Q: What’s it like to get a chance to coach her at the World Cup?

COACH:  “Any time you get a chance to coach your players, you get to know them a little bit better. And we get to experience this together. She has had this goal to make Team Canada the last ten years of her life, to represent her country. This is why I coach, to give back to the country of Canada. For us to experience together, it’s something that no one can ever take away from us. And when we get to Louisville, we can quickly transition her game into her freshman year. She’ll be used to division I speed, which will make the transition easier. In the past, it has helped players excel.”

Q: How difficult is it to balance everything when you are with Team Canada, but you have recruiting and others things to do back in Louisville preparing for next season?

COACH:  “I have a great staff here and having Kay (Morissette) on both of my staffs, at Louisville
and Canada, really helps. But, we’re really relying on Renee (Poullott). They have done a fabulous job recruiting while I’ve been away. I have seen as many players as a I can recruiting throughout the summer, but it makes it a little more hectic. I get back on August 12 and the players return on August 14, so there’s not a lot of time to get things ramped up again. There’s always a lot of excitement when the players get here to prepare for the upcoming season.”

Q: How does this help Kay and her development as an assistant?

COACH:  “It’s great development for her. She’s working along my other assistant, Allison Daily, who took over for me when I left Canisius. They are working together under my mentorship. I’ve given them the offense, they are running the offense. I give them my opinions and some pointers, but the offense is theirs, which is a great opportunity for growth. They know my philosophies as well as any of my former players or coaches. Just seeing her come out of her comfort zone is nice to see and she’s doing a great job.”

Q: Will it ever get old representing Canada and what is that feeling?

COACH “It’s obviously a tough feeling to explain. It’s a great feeling. When you hear your national anthem before every game and your players are standing beside you and your staff, and your singing like you did when you were in grade school every day, that just puts all of the hard work into perspective. And to see where Canada lacrosse has come over the last decade, while I’ve been involved has been phenomenal. Winning the gold medal in Scotland four years ago was surreal. It took three weeks for it to set in that we were world champions. In a couple of weeks, it won’t just be our team, it will be all of our supporters and a filled stadium, which will touch home even further.”

(A special thank you to Nick Evans for the interview with Teeter article!)

A History of Louisville women's sports Chapter 7 - Lacrosse -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

A History of Louisville Women’s Sports Chapter 7: Lacrosse

Happy Friday and welcome to chapter 7 of our history lessons! Today we look at a team that is barely a decade old. The lacrosse team is one of the newest sports at UofL.

"All the way" Kay -- The best ever to step on the LLS turf.
In 2008, Louisville founded a women’s lacrosse team. They found success right away, winning their inaugural game 21-3 against Bryant. They went on to finish the year 12-4.

The Louisville Lacrosse Stadium (LLS) was constructed specifically for the lacrosse team, making it one of the few lacrosse-only facilities in the country. Many schools use a multi-purpose field that has served host to other sports such as track and field, field hockey and soccer. It is an all-turf field with bleacher seating. A press box was added a few years ago.

Louisville has faced 48 opponents in program history. They hold a winning record against 33 teams and are tied with one.

Kellie Young was the first of two coaches in program history. During her 10-year run she had one losing season. The Cards saw Top 10 rankings on several occasions and were a threat in a strong Big East Conference. Young oversaw the transition to the ACC. The AAC does not field women’s lacrosse so the Cards went straight from the Big East to the ACC. Young was relieved of her duties following the 2017 season due to an investigation regarding mistreatment of players.

Scott Teeter came to Louisville in 2018 and has been the head coach for two seasons. Teeter game from Canisius and was head coach of the Canadian National Team. He has spent the last two seasons focused on rebuilding a program that lost over half of its roster. He is set to start season three during the spring of 2020.

This past season saw a couple program scoring records broken. Tessa Chad set records with most goals scored in a game, most goals scored in a single half and most goals scored in a season.

Another big time player was Kaylin Morissette. She is now an assistant coach, making her the first former player to become a coach at Louisville lacrosse. She also played for and coached with Teeter during some Canisius and CNT days. Morissette dominates the record sheet in ground balls and is high on the all-time scoring list.

The pride of Lakeville, MN -- Hannah Koloski
Bergan Foley, Faye Brust and Hannah Koloski also find themselves high on several record sheets in terms of scoring. Monica Negron was a key defender for Louisville Lax from 2011-14, garnered several Big East honors and is still on campus as an assistant director for student-athlete leadership and development. She also serves as a "spotter" for home lacrosse games.

Lacrosse games are free admission and we should see a few of them make it on TV on the new ACC Network next spring. You can often find many of us at Cardinal Couple out at the LLS covering our lax team.

RADIO

The A-team will be back in the studio Saturday for another episode of The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour.

Lacrosse prepares for busy, challenging Spring schedule -- The Scott Teeter Interview -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

TEETER TALKS! THE INTERVIEW:

Believe it or not, the Louisville Lacrosse squad is less than two months away from starting their 2019 season. It's a schedule that will present challenges for Scott Teeter, his coaching staff and the Louisville lacrosse roster...but the second year coach is ready to take on the opponents.

With the recent release of the 2019 schedule, Paulie decided to visit with Coach Teeter and get a pre-season look at who the Cards will play, who is new on the roster and who returns for the Lax squad. Coach was gracious in spending some time with Cardinal Couple to discuss, preview and comment on what is ahead for the LAXCards.

Paulie also chatted with assistant Kay Morissette prior to the interview and caught up with her and what she's been up to since the season ended.  Arguably the best to ever don a UofL Lacrosse uniform, Kay is always fun to talk to and it was time well spent before the interview with Scott. Thankfully, he didn't have to face her in any draw controls.

As you listen to the interview via the link at the end of the article link, here are some points and comments to listen for:

-- How did the Coach, staff and squad spend the fall?

-- When do they begin practice for the season?

-- Where will the Cards begin the season and when is the first home match?

-- Who is the first ACC foe the Cards will face?

-- How many home games will Louisville Lacrosse have and who comes to visit?

-- Does Paulie get a plane, a train and a siren in the interview? (three important background features to any Cardinal Couple interview)

-- Why will the Cards be the first team to arrive in Boston for the ACC Tournament besides the home-standing Eagles?

-- How many freshmen are on the roster?

-- Who returns from last year's roster and how many seniors does Teeter have?

-- Who returns from injury last year and how important will she be for the Cards?

An informative and well-spent time with Coach earlier this week, as we got the lowdown on what to expect for 2019 Louisville Lacrosse. Scott Teeter and his staff have worked the recruiting process quite diligently and extensively and have brought some very talented players in to augment the returnees from last season.

In his second season as the Cards skipper, Scott has restored the fire, team unity, integrity and excitement for Lacrosse on the campus. With Kay, Renee and Patty on-board as his capable, experienced and hard-working staff, the Cards are well-prepared and eager to hit the field and compete in the best conference in college lacrosse.

( Note: In case you are wondering, we got a plane around the five minute mark in the interview and a train around the 12 minute mark. No sirens. )

WBB National Media Day -- Teeter's Canadian Side -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Asia Durr Heads to Women's Basketball National Media Day

Asia Durr is one of seven collegiate players selected to attend the Women's Basketball National Media Day.  The event, hosted by ESPN and the NCAA, will be held later today, just one day before Louisville's media day.  This is Durr's second straight year attending the event.

Kalani Brown (Baylor), Chennedy Carter (Texas A&M), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Arike Ogunbawale (Notre Dame), Katie Lou Samuelson (UConn), and Teaira McCowan (Missisippi State) will be the other six to join Durr.  Geno Auriemma (UConn), Muffet McGraw (Notre Dame), and Vic Schaefer (Mississippi State) are the coaches that will present.

The senior was also named to the preseason All-ACC team.  Her 1,743 career points ranked her sixth in school history and she sits second on the list in made three-point field goals with 278.  You can follow @UofLWBB on their social media platforms to stay up-to-date with the events.

The honors and awards keep lining up for the
Douglasville, GA native. The WBB Cards will open their season on Nov 6th. with a short road trip to Western Kentucky to battle the Hilltoppers and first-year coach Greg Collins.

UofL will be looking to avenge a loss they suffered the last time they visited Bowling Green. On November 21st., 2015, Louisville fell to WKU 71-69 in E.A. Diddle  Arena. The Cards started the 2015-16 season at 3-5 before going on a 15 game win streak. That was UofL's first season in the ACC and Durr freshman year at Louisville.

Teeter Selected as U-19 Women's Canadian Lacrosse Team Head Coach

Scott Teeter's international accolades continue to pile up.  This time, The Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) announced that Teeter will lead the U-19 Women's Canadian Lacrosse Team at the 2019 FIL U-19 Women's Field Lacrosse World Championship in Ontario.

In 2015, Teeter led Team Canada to the U-19 Championship, winning gold.  He led the team to two silver medals in 2017, one at the FIL World Cup and one at the World Games.  In 2011, the team won a bronze medal at the championship.

On the U-19 coaching staff with him is Louisville lacrosse alumna and current assistant coach Kaylin Morissette.  A Canadian herself, Morissette was an assistant coach under Teeter at Canisius and has played on the Canadian National Team on multiple occasions.

Morissette is widely recognized as one of the best to don the red and black and play Lacrosse at Louisville. Her mastery of the draw control was legendary and she was named to the All-American teams three times in her playing days at UofL (2013-16).

With both Teeter and Kay helping coaching the Canadians, we can see them having great success and giving us another reason to admire and appreciate the brain trust of "Teeterssette".

Halloween

.No tricks here, just treats by Cardinal Couple.  Today is Halloween!

Halloween can be traced back all the way to Celtic times, where people would build bonfires and wear costumes as part of a fortune telling ceremony but also to ward off evil spirits.  The event, held on November 1, was known as Samhain.

The Roman Empire under Pope Gregory III later adopted the tradition in a more religious version.  November 1 was used to honor all Christian martyrs known as All Saints Day.  The tradition of games, costumes, masks, and parties became popular.

In America, the Protestant north was opposed to Halloween, but the holiday was adopted by the south, where parties became more extravagant.  Ghost stories started becoming more popular partly due to the influence of the Native Americans.  During the Irish potato famine the population of America grew rapidly and Halloween spread around the country.

Americans would walk door-to-door asking for food or money in the early forms of trick-or-treating.  The media encouraged households to decorate their homes in a frightening or grotesque manner to add to the holiday.  Small vandalism began appearing on homes or schools during the Halloween period.  To help their homes from being vandalized families would offer candy and other treats to keep the children at bay.

Here on the campus of the University of Louisville teams have added their own fun to Halloween by having practices featuring costumes.  Athletes will also have Halloween parties as a chance to dress up in a costume and have fun.  I guess college students are too old to go trick-or-treating anymore.

You can check out the UofL Symphony Orchestra's Halloween Spooktacular tonight if you're looking for something to do for free.  In the past they have been known to play pieces such as Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, Harry Potter Hedwig's Theme, In The Hall of  the Mountain King, Pirates of the Caribbean, and much more while performing in costumes!  Seating fills up fast so arrive extra early if you plan to go.

Here are some popular Halloween songs to help get you into the spirit:

Monster Mash (Bobby "Boris"Pickett & The Crypt Kickers) music video

Thriller (Michael Jackson) music video

Ghostbusters (Ray Parker Jr) music video

This is Halloween (The Nightmare Before Christmas) music video

Have any Halloween stories, funny or scary?  Feel free to share!

We are approaching Donation Month at Cardinal Couple so don't forget to leave us a "treat" in the form of a donation. We accept Pay Pal donations (see the top of the site for the link), or you can send your check or money order to:

All Quiet...SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

All Quiet...

All Quiet on the Western Front, a novel, originally in German, tells of the monotony, terror, and
horrific conditions that faced soldiers in World War I.  It also speaks of their detachment from society upon returning home from the front lines of the war.

In no way does being a college sports fan in summer compare to any real degree to the horrors of war, but the phrase "All quiet on the western front" has entered the English lexicon as a description of stagnation and lack of activity.  It, in it's modern usage, is an apt description of summer sports media coverage.  We've discussed it plenty of times before, laughed about it on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour, and revived the CCRH quiz as a coping mechanism.

There is activity, and we strive to bring you the news as it happens.  The challenge is that most of the activity in the summer is individual and behind the scenes.  Individual athletes are off competing in various far flung places, particularly the Field Hockey and Swimming squads, two of the most international teams on campus.  Ayeisha McFerran will be off playing Field Hockey, in England, for Ireland (July 21 - August 5) Molly Sauer went to China to play volleyball with one of the US Collegiate National Teams (May 20-31), while Dani Busboom Kelly and Amanda Green will be off to Europe to coach and play for another CNT (July 4-15).  This list could go on and on.  News on these activities can be surprisingly difficult to come by.

Otherwise, the activity just isn't all that interesting to talk about or write about.  Camps are happening, athletes are doing individual workouts, many, but not all, on campus (Volleyball has one athlete still to report to campus as summer club tournaments are still in progress, Soccer and Field Hockey may not have all of their athletes arrive until after the start of the season in August).  Coaches are travelling on the recruiting trails, and, yes, occasionally enjoying a moment of summer fun (Sam Purcell posted a totally adorable video with his daughters, in celebration of Reese's birthday, that included their trip to last night's Taylor Swift concert).  Paulie, the retired one of us knuckleheads, has been chasing down a number of great interviews, as you've no doubt seen, with the likes of Justine Sowry, Kay Morissette.  He's got one lined up for this week that should be great, and a line on another, but not set in stone.  Be sure to check those out when he posts them.

So, we go on with the daily coverage.

In the meantime, we soldier on, no worse for the wear when mid-August comes around and Cardinal competitions start up again.  In the meantime, give a thought for these athletes out competing, many of them outdoors, in the summer heat.  Maybe give a particular thought to Field Hockey Goalkeepers such as McFerran.  Imagine wearing padding such as that pictured to the right on a field with no shade on a 90+ degree day.  Yikes!

Yesterday's show and Facebook Live presentation of The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour can be heard and watched at the link below. From clothing styles, to hiccups...angry Case and total free form idiocy...plus solar panels and World Cup soccer...the "show about nothing" lived up to its billing:

Catching up with...Kay Morissette -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

THE KAY MORISSETTE INTERVIEW

We normally run the "Catching Up" sequence here at Cardinal Couple once a week but, when presented with the opportunity to interview new UofL assistant Lacrosse Coach Kay Morissette Wednesday, how could I say no? How often do you get to ask questions and have a conversation with one of the greats in the Lacrosse world, after all?

The Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada native may just be the best Lacrosse player to ever suit up for the Cards in the history of the program. Graduating from Louisville in 2016, she is the Cardinal all-time leader in draw controls...with 572 in her four year time as a student-athlete. In her 73 games at UofL the Cards went 49-24 and she scored 167 goals...fourth-highest in UofL history. She was a IWLCA First-Team All-American twice (2015 and 2016)...the only Cardinal to achieve the award twice.

As you listen to the interview, here's a few topics she discusses:

Tailgating with Kay at TaxSlayer Bowl
-- What are some of the responsibilities as an assistant coach?

-- What is the "Teeter Way" and what does it consist of?

-- What made Kay so successful at winning draw controls?

-- What did Kay have to trade to get Lacrosse started at her high school?

-- How did Kay spend her summers in Bowmanville?

-- What do her uncles do?

-- Why Louisville?

It was a great honor and esteemed privilege to interview Kay Morissette and we wish her and the LAX Cards the best of seasons in the spring of 2019.

WNBA UPDATE

Angel McCoughtry saw 24 minutes last night for Atlanta in a 93-80 loss to the Chicago Sky. She had six pts., four rebounds and five fouls. Atlanta is 7-7 on the season.

Asia Taylor got 14 minutes for the Indiana Fever in a 101-89 loss to the Connecticut Sun. I watched a bit of this one on TV last night and "A-Tayy" looked pretty good out there for the hapless Fever, totaling four points and three grabs. At 1-14, it's obvious that the Fever needs some chemistry and someone who can play defense.

Myisha Hines-Allen plays tonight for the Washington Mystics against the New York Liberty in our nation's capitol. Washington is 9-5 on the season, good for fourth place in the standings and it is the first meeting this season between the two squads.

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Believe it or not, but columnist Jared Anderson joined us one year ago here at Cardinal Couple!

We certainly appreciate Jared's diligence in columns, his excellent photography work and coverage of UofL sporting events. An integral member of the "A-Team", he also balances us with a full-time job sorting pennies from nickles, River City Cards, the Louisville Bats, playing the euphonium, devoting time to his church and creating havoc at Lou City FC games.

In addition, he's a pretty good guy to know as well and it's rumored he's got a "cutie" stashed away down in Tallahassee, FL.

Happy anniversary, Jared! Stop by anytime to pick up your keys for one of the Cardinal Couple golf carts and to the executive washroom and banana daiquiri lounge deep in the secret location and clandestine recesses of the Cardinal Couple Worldwide Corporate headquarters.

Nyemah, Henderson 2nd and 3rd in Kentucky Invitational -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Women's Track and Field stars take second and third in weight throw...shot put today.

We've been firing pretty heavily on UofL women's basketball lately...and with the Cards WBB squad not playing until Sunday...let's take a look at a few other items today.

Dolly Nyemah and Emmonnie Henderson are the two best "throwers" on the Cards women's track and field team. They traveled to the Nutter Field House in Lexington Friday to participate in the Kentucky Invitational. In the weight throw, Nyemah usually finished a little better than Emmonnie. That held to form yesterday...Dolly getting second with a top toss of 19.82 meters and "E" finishing third with a best of 18.73 meters. The winner was Sade Olatoye from Ohio State. She finished with a 20.13 meter performance.

Emmonnie goes back in the shot put today. Dolly doesn't put the shot. "E" has the second best qualifying toss as they head into the finals...a 17.17 meter throw she had at Indiana last month. Only Erin Farmer from Arkansas State has throw better in the field of 39...at 17.80 meters. The Cards also have Megan Brooks (13.41m-best) competing. No discus toss tomorrow...that's usually not a indoor event.

OK...Kay!!!

Former UofL lacrosse standout and All-American Kay Morissette has made the top 25 qualifiers for Team Canada in the 2017 women's lacrosse World Cup. Kay was a master at the draw control for the Cards and has been practicing with Canada since graduation. The Canadians went 0-3 over the summer in exhibition play. They'll need to pare the roster down to 17 before they travel to the World Cup in England and the World Games in Poland this summer.

Continue to play, Kay! She was always such a fun interview...

Speaking of lacrosse, goal-defender Brittany Read and defense Steph McNamara were selected to the ACC Pre-season teams.  Lacrosse is busily at practice and will begin the 2017 season on Saturday, Feb. 4th. when they host Vermont at the L.L.S.

Here comes Grayson and the Dookies...

Grayson Allen and the Duke Blue Devils visit the KFC YUM! Center today at noon and we're sure the Cardinal Student section will greet him with fond salutations and optimistic banter. Our Case Hoskins will be present...making sure his trip goes well (sorry about the pun). Coach K. won't be there.

Case will join us via phone on The CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR (11 a.m. ET) on WCHQ 100.9 FM and at www.crescenthillradio.com live from the YUM! and give us the scoop and a promised rant. Woo-hoo !!

We'll also review the UofL WBB squad's latest games and take a look at Sunday's game against Miami. We got audio from Pitt and much, much more!

Join us for the broadcast. It's free, you know...and limited studio audience seating is available...just come around to the side door and tell Monk you're there for moral support or a member of the UofL yell leaders. Bring a treat for Punkin' and couple of craft beers for Worldwide.

COACH DAN RECOMMENDS...

I had the extreme pleasure of hearing baseball coach Dan McDonnell and softball coach Sandy Pearsall speak recently at the monthly Sportsmen's Supper Club meeting. Both were excellent in their recaps of last year and previews for their upcoming seasons. Sandy has her top two pitchers back, her six leading hitters and some talented newcomers...including 6'1" freshman, right-handed pitcher Sydney Warinner.

Sandy was fantastic, informative and always tosses in her wry sense of humor to the crowd. My application to be bat-boy for the trips to Las Vegas and southern California hasn't been approved yet, though...probably just an administrative delay...Sandy also always brings lots of "swag" to distribute to the audience. I got a great Cardinal pullover jackets and it's why she's probably one of...if not our favorite speakers each year. Treats!!!

Dan always delivers a great speech as well. He always recommends a book we should read and offered Mark Batterson's CHASE THE LION as an excellent read.

He was right. I've been reading excerpts of it on-line while waiting for delivery of mine. A couple of great philosophies so far...

-- If the dream doesn't scare you, it's too small

-- Run toward the roar. Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.

He explains that animals will run away from a lion's roar. When they do that, they fall into the rest of the pack... quietly waiting in the opposite direction. Brilliant strategy, right?

Maybe Walz could get Cortnee to stand screaming underneath the Louisville basket and when the opposition runs away from her...the other four Cards will be wide open....

(Just another reason why I no longer coach and Walz feels the need to instruct me on the basics...right?)

have a super Saturday

Add another to the professional ranks -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

KAYLIN MORISSETTE SELECTED FOR U.W.L.L.'s PHILADELPHIA FORCE

After four excellent years with the UofL Lacrosse team, mid-fielder Kaylin Morissette has been added to the United Women's Lacrosse League's Philadelphia Force squad. It is the inaugural season for the four team league...a league with roots in the hotbed of high school lacrosse...with teams in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Long Island and Boston.

Each squad will have 17 players and three reserves and will play weekly...the action started over the weekend and will go through the end of July.

Philadelphia head head Missy Doherty joins the team after guiding her Penn State squad to the Final Four of the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament. The Nittany Lions were a bit of surprise to reach the last four...but knocked off Florida and Penn to get there. UNC won the 2016 Championship over Maryland.

Morissette lives by the initials "DBS". She writes them on the inside of her wrist before each game.

Don't be selfish. Kay explains:

" I need to stay mentally checked in. If I take myself out of the game emotionally...I'm hurting the chances of my team. I'm just making sure I stay accountable to my teammates."

May the "Force" be with you in Philly, Kay!

USA U 18 WOMEN'S TEAM SELECTED

Although they were invited to the camp of 30 players competing for the 12 spots on the USA U 18 squad, neither Kylee Shook nor Ciera Johnson were selected for the squad.

Jeannie Boehm (2016) (Harvard), Rellah Booth (2017), Chennedy Carter (2017), Sidney Cooks (2017), Lauren Cox (2016) (Baylor), Crystal Dangerfield (2016) (UConn), Tyasha Harris (2016) South Carolina, Ruthie Hebard (2016) (Oregon), Valerie Higgins (2016) USC, Amber Ramirez (2016) (TCU), Megan Walker (2017) and Evina Westbrook (2017) are the 12 that Suzie McConnell-Serio (Pitt) will coach.

An interesting mix of players...Cox and Dangerfield return from the 2015 squad that Jeff Walz was an assistant on....with six college freshmen and six high-school seniors.

Best of luck to them in international competition.

Louisville Lacrosse sinks the Commodores 15-5...Asia Taylor headed to Indiana Fever -- Wednesday CARDINAL COUPLE

KOLOSKI'S SIX PACK HELPS LAX GET TO 4-0

Louisville Lacrosse jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first fifteen minutes of Tuesday's lacrosse match in Nashville and Hannah Koloski scored a career high six goals in Louisville's 15-5 win over Vanderbilt.

The Cards struck very early in this one...Cortnee Daley scoring just 16 seconds into action and then Daley connected again with a minute gone in play. By the half, the Cards held a 8-1 lead...Koloski had three scores on board, Kaylin Morissette and Daley had found the net twice and Julia Wood was in the books with one.

Morissette and Daley would finish with four goals each in the rout. The Cards dominated shots on goal 39-19 and a 19-3 advantage in draw controls. Louisville (4-0) got eight saves from Brittany Read in the contest...which was played with a continuous running clock over the final 11 minutes.

A bit of a change in scoring than we usually see out of the Cardinals...with just four players accounting for the 15 scores. Nevertheless, a convincing win and confidence builder for this veteran squad against a quality opponent on the road.

Kellie Young's laxers will start ACC play on Saturday when they host the Boston College Eagles at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium. First draw is scheduled for noon.

A special congratulations to Kaylin Morissette, who was named to lacrosse's Tewaaraton Award women's watch list. She's one of 50 in consideration for the award that honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. 18 ACC women are on the list.

ASIA TAYLOR SIGNED TO FREE AGENT CONTRACT BY INDIANA FEVER

ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE
PICTURES...ASIA and CORTNEE
Congratulations to former UofL WBB star Asia Taylor for being signed to WNBA's Indiana Fever's roster as a free agent.

A-Tayy has been playing in Israel and South Korea after spending the 2014 season with the Minnesota LYNX. Talk about two powder keg locations to play hoops at!

Taylor was the AAC's most improved player in 2014 while at Louisville and a first-team all-league selection. She also had the most blocked shots for the Cards in the 2013-14 season.

We always felt that A-Tayy deserved and needed another shot at the 'big show' after having to sit on Minnesota's bench behind a deep and talented front line. It's good to see she's getting it and we're ready for a few trips to Indy this summer!
