Lacrosse Cards Look to Take Down Team USA -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

As we're fully into the summer slump now, the news gets more and more sparse. I'm filling in for Daryl today, and I've got the write again tomorrow, so no fair jumping on me about not emptying the coffers in today's column. Daryl should return next week, but, for now, enjoy a look at Cards playing outside of their season.

Team Canada Heads to World Championship Final

Ten representatives from the Louisville lacrosse program went to Maryland last week to begin their representation of their countries. All ten advanced to the knockout stage of the final sixteen teams, but only one of the five teams remains. The team in question is Canada, which is home to six of the ten Cards participating in the tournament. The Canadians, led by Scott Teeter on the bench and featuring Kay Morissette on the field, had to knock out Monica Negron of Puerto Rico and Anna Lottmann of the Czech Republic. Kokoro Nakazawa's Japan team was knocked out by the US in the quarter finals and Stephanie McNamara's Australian squad fell to the Yanks in the semis. 

Canada, which is also represented by Allison Daley (assistant coach), Nicole Perroni, Hannah Morris, and Brenna Shanahan, defeated England 11-9 in their semifinal yesterday to advance to the rematch with the US. Kay Morissette had eight draw controls alone, matching the entire total for England. Team Canada and Team USA played each other to open the tournament in a game in which the US took victory 16-11. Team USA is chasing their fourth consecutive title as they will play in their 11th straight gold medal match. In addition to a rematch of the opener, this is also the third straight gold medal match to feature this matchup. Scott Teeter and company will look to finish the job tomorrow at Noon. The Lacrosse World Championship site gives conflicting reports for the television viewing, so be sure to check both ESPN2 and ESPNU around that time to find the game.

ACC Volleyball Awards -- Lax News -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 ACC Volleyball Awards

The ACC announced their postseason awards for volleyball yesterday, and to no surprise, Louisville Volleyball's presence was felt. Dani Busboom Kelly was named ACC Coach of the Year, Tori Dilfer was named ACC Setter of the Year, and seven Cardinals were named to the All-ACC Teams.

Going undefeated in the regular season and winning the ACC by a whopping three matches (!!!) should make the ACC Coach of the Year decision unanimous. Coach Dani Busboom Kelly was given the award for the second straight year. DBK is the second Louisville coach to win ACC Coach of the Year after Anne Kordes received the honor in 2015.

Tori Dilfer also retained her award from last season, ACC Setter of the Year. Similar to a football team running their offense through their quarterback, the setter is crucial in order to run your offense efficiently. Wilma Rivera won the award back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018, meaning a Louisville player has held the ACC Setter of the Year title in four of the last five seasons. Katie George won the award in 2015, extended the Cardinals' streak to five of the last seven years.

Anna Stevenson and Anna DeBeer join Dilfer on the All-ACC First Team. All three repeated the honors from last season.

Claire Chaussee, Aiko Jones, Amaya Tillman, and Elena Scott were named to the All-ACC Second Team. Jones and Tillman were All-ACC honorees last year while Chaussee and Scott join the ranks for the first time. Scott was also named to the All-ACC Freshman Team.

Mabrey Shaffmaster (North Carolina) was named ACC Freshman of the Year, Mackenzie Cole (Duke) was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and Julia Bergmann (Georgia Tech) was named ACC Player of the Year.

All 15 coaches in the ACC participate in voting for the awards.

Louisville is one of six teams from the ACC represented in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Pitt (2-seed), Georgia Tech (8-seed), Miami, North Carolina, and Florida State are the other five teams.

The top-seeded Cards will open the tournament on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., against the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC). Their match will follow the conclusion of Michigan vs Ball State (4:00 p.m.). The winners will face each other on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Season ticket holders have had an opportunity to put a request in for tickets already. The remaining availability for tickets will go on sale on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., ET. We do not know how many tickets, if any, will still be available. Although the NCAA does not require masks to be worn at their events, the University of Louisville requires masks to be worn indoors on campus, including sporting events. Please don't make the mistake of showing up without one as they will turn you away at the door.

Allison Daley to be Named to Canisius Hall of Fame

Louisville Lacrosse assistant coach Allison Daley has been selected to be a part of the next class to be inducted into the Canisius Hall of Fame. Daley is currently in her first season as a part of the Louisville coaching staff.

Daley was a four-year letter winner as a goalkeeper and holds the record at Canisius with 662 career saves. In 2011, she was named the MAAC Championship MVP. She was also named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2010.

Following her playing career, Daley played for Team Canada before becoming the associate head coach for them. When Coach Scott Teeter took the head coaching position at Louisville, Daley took over the head coaching duties at Canisius.

The Hall of Fame induction will be held Feb. 6, 2022.

Allison Daley Joins Lax -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 Allison Daley Joins Lacrosse Staff

One of these days we'll finish recapping these seasons from last year. Our women's basketball recap keeps getting pushed back as other news falls right onto our lap. It's like the cliff hanger that drags on annoyingly long, but I promise we'll recap their season one of these days. Paulie gave us a nice preview of what 2021-22 Louisville women's hoops will look like yesterday. 

Today, we take a look at a spring sport that calls Floyd Street home. Louisville Lacrosse welcomed a new assistant coach to the crew yesterday. Allison Daley will join Coach Scott Teeter's staff. Although Daley holds no relation to Larry Daley and his nighttime magic at the American Museum of Natural History (did you know that movie is 15 years old?!), we expect her to bring her own magic to a talented Cards roster. 

The Cards LAX program had Cortnee Daley, an All-Big East selection, who played at Louisville from 2013-16, but she and Allison are not related. Cortnee did register a goal and assist against Canisius, though, with Allison on the Golden Griffs sidelines, back when the Cards played Canisius in Buffalo back in 2016, Louisville winning 15-7.

Allison Daley and Teeter go way back. The former was both a player and an assistant coach under the latter. Daley also served as associate head coach for the Canadian U-19 national team at the 2019 FIL U-19 Women's Field Lacrosse World Championships.

When Teeter left Canisius for Louisville, Daley was promoted to the head coaching role at Canisius, where she has spent the last four seasons. Daley replaces Renee Poullett at Louisville, who left the Cards midseason and took a job as an academic advisor at Cornell University. She's up there hanging out with Andy Bernard. Another I feel old moment: that show's first season premiered 16 years ago.

"We are very excited to add Allison to our staff as an assistant coach," said Teeter. "We have a long history together, as she played for me and has been a member of my staff, so she understands our systems and is familiar with our culture. As a former standout goalkeeper and head coach, she brings extensive knowledge, especially on the defensive side, and will be a tremendous asset for our program."

Teeter now has both Daley and Kay Morissette on his coaching staff, both of whom have coached with him in the past. Things tend to run smoother when you're surrounded by a staff you're familiar with and can trust. Daley's defensive expertise can help Louisville shut down opposing offenses. Many of the losses last season can be credited to opposing teams going on a run at some point in the match. Rachel Florek should continue to command goal and having a beefed up defense around her will make her job that much easier.

We will see if Paulie can set up an interview with Scott Teeter and Allison Daley later this summer and get a feel for her personality and the team's goals for the upcoming season. He has made the preliminary request and gotten a positive answer from Teeter. 

Before the spring sports season ended lacrosse was a sport that had been approved for a new video board and revamped sound system. The video board had ongoing issues throughout the season as it had reached the end of its tenure so a new and improved video board will increase the experience at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

WNBA

There were no games last night but we see a pair of WNBA games on the calendar today. Jazmine Jones, Kylee Shook, and the New York Liberty face a struggling Atlanta Dream team at 7:00 on ESPN3. Although MHA is out, her Washington Mystics team hosts a tough Connecticut Sun team at 7:00 on ESPN2.
