Lady Cards dispatch of University of Fraser Valley 118-57

.
MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Lady Cards roll past Fraser Valley 118-57

-Women's swimming & diving finishes with 3.4

They came, they saw, they had a lot of fun and they concluded their trip to Canada with a romp past University of Fraser Valley Sunday night 118-57.
"Sho"time had 17 points against Fraser Valley Sunday night.
The 61 point win was the smallest margin of victory for the team in the three games in Canada but against probably the best opponent of the three they faced up in the "great white north."

Balanced scoring and a suffocating press remained the scenario for the UofL hoopsters. Monique Reid and Shoni Schimmel led the Cardinal offensive production with 20 for Mo and 17 for "Sho". Asia Taylor and Cierra Warren finished with 14 and Tia Gibbs completed the double figure producers with 12. These five players...alone...outscored Fraser Valley by 20.

Louisville actually trailed most of the first quarter in this one.

http://www.uoflsports.com/ has a blog out there about it.

The University of Louisville women's swimming team finished 2010-2011
with one of the highest GPA's in the nation at 3.4. Scholar All-American Honorable Mention awards went to Grita Apanavicule, Krissie Brandenburg, Nicole Landisch, Lindsey LaPorte, Fanny Lillestrom, Breann McDowell, Lindsey Stephens and Raine Thompson.

Cardinals getting it done in the classroom...a true sign of the term "student-athlete"...

Cierra, Monique fuel Lady Cards 112-43 win over TWU....Soccer tonight!

SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Cards roll past Trinity Western by 69

-Exhibition soccer tonight at Cardinal Park

Were there three Cierra's on the court last night? It
probably seemed that way to TWU. She netted 19
points and grabbed 12 rebounds. (Pictures by Charlie Springer-
UofL Gard game)
The University of Louisville women's basketball team stepped on the accelerator early in last night's game and rolled by Trinity Western University 112-43 in their second exhibition game of their Canada trip. Different gym and different city last night but same result...the Cards grabbed an early, commanding lead and didn't back off. Cierra Warren led the way...recording a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards. Monique Reid added 18 points and seven grabs. Sherrone Vails and Tia Gibbs finished with 12 each. Walz tried a bunch of different combinations last night against the over-matched Canadians and they all apparently seemed to work.

The Cards were up 58-19 at the half and led 102-35 near the end. Walz started Jude Schimmel, Bria Smith, Asia Taylor Sara Hammond and Cierra Warren to begin the game and came out with Bria, Sara, Tia Gibbs, Shoni Schimmel and Monique Reid to tip off the second half. Way too early to read anything into that...he probably could have started Al Greener, Howie Lindsey and Jerry Abramson in combination with any two Lady Cards and romped.

It does look like this version of the Lady Cards is not shy about putting the rock thru rim. Defense is usually a little slower to come around, but holding two opponents to 43 points on consecutive nights isn't too shabby.

Things may be a little tougher Sunday night when the Cards square off against Fraser Valley in Abbotsville, B.C. They played a fairly decent Mississippi team last week and lost by less than 20. The Cascades are probably the best team out of the three that UofL will see in Canada and was 4-0 against the Cards previous two opponents.

Rumor is that the Cards might spend the off day today hooking up with ex-Card Angel McCoughtry and the Atlanta Dream...who happen to be in Seattle to play the Storm tonight at 7 p.m. (Pacific Time)

http://www.uoflsports.com/ is blogging pretty regularly now about the trip and has recaps of Thursday and Friday nights scrimmages posted.

Women's soccer gets an early test tonight with a 7 p.m. scrimmage against Vanderbilt at Cardinal Park. There will be a free soccer clinic from 5-6 for boys and girls 7 to 13 and admission to the match is free also.

Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes looks to improve on last year's 10-9 record and will count on 2010 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Christine Exeter to be an essential force on the field.

Louisville women's soccer starts the regular season next Friday with a trip to Eastern Kentucky University.

Cards head to Canada...Jude schimmel reaping rewards already

SUNDAY WITH CARDINAL COUPLE

-Cards try the ponies before leaving the country

-Eastern Oregonian article on Jude Schimmel

-Cards future opponent takes on Ole Miss

The Lady Cards basketball team took to the saddle Saturday morning before leaving the
Umatilla Reservation and heading to Winfree, B.C. Canada. No wagering was allowed on their jockey skills...but from the looks of these photos below from the UofL women's basketball Facebook site...it was a great time. Who would win a horse race between the 14 Lady Cards?

Shelby Harper and Jude Schimmel ready to gallop

We can't say for sure, but this is probably how Churchill Downs track announcer Mark Johnson would call the race:

"Thirteen fillies lining up for the gate...going six furlongs on a fast, grass track. AND...they're off. Jude Schimmel breaks smartly from the gate and goes for a tightly contested lead with Shelby Harper, Shoni Schimmel and Tia Gibbs forcing the pace. Next, Asia Taylor moves to the inside followed by Cierra Warren, Shawnta Dyer, Sara Hammond and Sherrone Vails. Monique Reid starts slow, as this closer usually does...Becky Burke content to run with that one...Antonita Slaughter can see them all and it seems Bria Smith started from New York as she trails the field. They fly down the Churchill turf course...Gibbs forcing Jude to the rail, Shoni makes a no-look move to the center of the course, Harper and Dyer follow closely behind...Taylor battles Warren, Hammond and Vails for an inside path and Slaughter, Burke and Smith are content to follow the sprinters. They round the turn and hit the Churchill stretch. Jude and Gibbs neck and neck, Shoni fires from the outside...Harper a blonde blur in the center of the track. Taylor positions herself in front of Warren...Hammond charging down the middle and Vails and Dyer look for the middle of the course. Slaughter, Smith and Burke start to close quickly from the back, Warren towers menacingly in the middle and....here comes Reid flying at the finish! They hit the line and it's too close to call...thirteen hit the wire at the same time! Photo finish....

(I know....don't quit your day job, Paul)

WE'RE fans of the coverage that the Portland Tribune and East Oregonian newspapers have been giving Louisville's trip to the Northwest. Matt Entrup, a writer at the Oregonian did this great article on the team and Jude Schimmel that we want to share with you.

Louisville hits pay dirt twice with Schimmel sisters.

The University of Louisville women's basketball team struck gold when it acquired the talents of Pendleton native Shanie Schimmel in 2010 and the rich got richer with the addition of younger sister Jude for the upcoming season.

The two girls have teamed together throughout their youth, most notably at Portland's Franklin High School where Jude spent her senior season eclipsing several of her older sister's career marks as a Quaker. Although Jude may never be considered in the same class as her sister when it comes to scoring points, the 5'5" point guard has a very valuable skill set she brings to the Cardinals this season.

"Jude's been very impressive." said Louisville head coach Jeff Walz after a practice session at Blue Mountain Community College on Friday. "We had our 10 days of practice in June to get prepared for this trip and she's done a very good job. She's a very good defender, makes a lot of things happen for us at the defensive end of the floor. She's scrappy, she can score when she has to. She'll play just because of the sheer fact of how hard she plays. "

Jude certainly didn't look the part of a timid freshman on Friday, leading the team through a drill involving sprinting from one basket to another while attempting layups while time ran down-expelling so much energy that she needed to be propped up by a teammate afterward. With three years to look forward to together at the NCAA Division I level, one can onlguess to the heights the Schimmels will be able to lift the Cardinals-which made the Sweet 16 in Shoni's freshman year. Jude said she considered other schools early in her college search but when it came time to sign, Louisville was the clear choice.

Louisville will play University of Fraser Valley next Sunday. The Cascades got a start on their preseason schedule Friday night against the Ole Miss Rebels, losing 85-69. The Rebs jumped out to an early lead but UFV stayed with them in the first quarter, allowing only 20 points and went in at halftime down only 37-33. Aleishia Luyken led the Cascades with six points. Ole Miss gradually increased the lead in the final half to win by 16. Whitney Harneth led the Rebs with 21 points.

Mississippi   20  17  25  23  =  85
UFV             16  17   19   17  = 69

The Rebs out rebounded UFV 38-30. Tessa Klassen led UFV with 17 points.

Cardinal couple returns after summer break...

SUNDAY @ CARDINAL COUPLE:

-The Boys (and Sonja) are back in town

-Fraser Valley will throw a mix at Louisville in Canada

After two weeks, over 2000 miles and one afternoon with the biggest flies and mosquitoes in
the nation, CARDINAL COUPLE is safe and secure back in the jolly ol' Ville...well rested, re-acquainted with family and friends and ready for what looks to be an exciting fall of women's
sports for the University of Louisville. By the numbers:

-7 gas stops...ranging from $3.53 a gallon to an obscene $4.02 a gallon (outside of Chicago).

Buffalo meat loaf !
-41 meals away from home...including an incredible buffalo meat loaf at a small restaurant outside Mt. Rushmore and a very forgettable 10:30 p.m. dinner at a McDonald's where the cashier wanted to charge me 99 cents for a cup of water.  Some great home cooking also from  the Johnson's and Hildebrandt's.

-3 athletic events...watching the Cubbies lose to the Brewers 4-2, seeing the Indiana Fever sneak by the Washington Mystics by two and having a relative completely destroy me in a game of "21". (Never did have an outside jumper...)

Free coffee! (Dine-in only) No Robbie Bartlett or 50/50, though.
-6 state or national parks...the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, (incredible, incredible)
Lake Itasca, Custer and Devil's Lake.

-Touristy traps like The Corn Palace, Wall Drug, Al's Oasis and the infamous Sturgis, S.D. of biker fame (2 weeks too early and probably a good thing...)

The Badlands of South Dakota. Amazing rock formations.
-Seven Interstates , eight states and six major cities...Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Fargo and DesMoines.

-A trip to my mother's burial site and fond reflection on the years she was with us. Hooking up with relatives and friends that, like us...have aged...but still have great stories to tell and friendship to share.

Seeing where the Mississippi River gets its start and fleeing in panic from flies the size of baby birds and mosquitoes that swarmed by the hundreds. Deep Woods OFF didn't even help...

Nothing like arriving home, though...pulling in the driveway, seeing the flower gardens. Noting the yard that needed mowing...getting to sleep in your own bed after 14 nights and having a cup of coffee brewed just the way you like it.

Special thanks to David Watson for his articles while we were gone, Donnie Yaste for his contribution and Charlie Springer for confessing he had forgotten how to log in as a writer. And now...on with the show.

**********************************************************************************

For Abbetsford, Canada residents...a sure sign that the end of summer is near can be found inside the Envision Athletic Center on the University of Fraser Valley campus starting tomorrow. Training camp gets underway for the Cascades' women's basketball team, as they prepare for two tough exhibition tests...Mississippi on August 5th and Louisville on August 14th.

Fraser Valley adds freshmen
and returns depth.
The two exhibition games against quality DI WBB foes will give Cascades WBB head coach Al Tuchscherer a blueprint on how to proceed with a returning team that has six incoming freshmen and a talented returning nucleus that made it to the Canada West playoffs last season and advanced to the Final Four.

"Last year, we did some nice things to turn the program around a bit." Tuchscherer reflected. "There's just an excitement more than anything. When it comes to expectations, it's what we always do and that's to prepare and do the best we can with the talent we have. You want to have those veteran players who will go through the system and learn things and then keep adding pieces."

Tuchscherer became the Cascades head coach in 2002, but got his college degree from Fraser Valley and was an assistant coach there before assuming the head role.

*********************************************************************************

Mapquest shows the trip from Pendleton, OR. to Abbotsford, BC to be a 400 mile, eight hour journey. How many of the Schimmel fans and family that will make the trip is unknown...but there will no doubt be fans in the stands who remember the Schimmel sisters' exploits from their playing days on the rez and in Portland, OR. A lot of the trip looks like Interstate, maybe our readers on the Umatilla will make the trip and give us a report...

CARDINAL COUPLE has contacted a sports-writer from the Abbotsford Times newspaper and will try to arrange first hand reports on the contest for our readers. Doubtful there will be any TV or radio for this one...the team will have a blog over at http://www.uoflsports.com/ about the trip to Canada.
