SHONI TRADED TO NEW YORK....TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

SHONI SCHIMMEL TRADED TO NEW YORK LIBERTY

Former Cardinal WBB great Shoni Schimmel was traded from the WNBA's Atlanta Dream to the New York Liberty yesterday for a second year pick in next year's WNBA Draft Monday.

Schimme, a fan favorite on the roster...along with Angel McCoughtry...had recently come under fire from the Dream's head coach Michael Cooper for reporting to training camp out-of-shape..an issue that also upset Dream management. Cooper, however, indicated that the conditioning had nothing to do with the trade.

"The way we are being structured and want to go, anybody could have been traded. This was about dynamics on the team. We wanted to put something on the floor that the fans can appreciate and will play with a high energy on offense and defense." Cooper commented.

Nice try, Michael, but no cigar. So, you're saying that Angel, or Tiffany Hayes might have been trade bait? That the fans don't appreciate Shoni...who wowed the WNBA in the All-Star game? Fess up, pal. It was all about the conditioning and a plethora of guards on the Dream's 2016 roster. Moving Shoni to point guard may or may not have been a viable strategy but at least call this what it is. A power play from a coach who failed to get the Dream to the WNBA Playoffs in the 2015 season. A maneuver to try and save your job.

Meanwhile, Shoni's new coach, Isiah Thomas, sees the potential.

"Shoni has demonstrated she can shine on a big stage and I am confident that with the leadership on our staff and our team she will thrive as a member of the New York Liberty playing in Madison Square Garden. Shoni is a good fit for our style of play and her long range shooting will really allow us to spread the floor on the offensive end. She takes pride in giving back to the community and she shares the same core values that the other members of this team do."

Tanisha Wright and Sugar Rodgers started for the Liberty in their first exhibition game of the season...a loss to Chicago.

Shoni joins a team that went 23-11 in 2015 and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals...losing to the Indiana Fever 2-1 in the series. The Fever went on to fall to 2015 WNBA Champs Minnesota.

So...it's goodbye Georgia Peach and hello Big Apple for #23. We hope the change is acceptable to the palate and that Shoni shines brightly in Manhattan.

ASIA AND JUDE

Two other WBB Cards are also involved in the preseason WNBA contests and they faced each other the other night. Asia Taylor (Indiana Fever) and Jude Schimmel (Dallas Chicken Wings) met in a May 1st game. The Fever took the contest 108-90

Jude had five points in 24 minutes...Asia 13 points in 14 minutes.

Both teams played without its top stars. Dallas played without returning starters Skylar Diggins, Karima Christmas, Courtney Paris and Odyssey Sims. Indiana was without Tamika Catchings, Marissa Coleman, Shenise Johnson, Erlana Larkins and trade acquisition Devereaux Peters.

Jude Schimmel invited to Dallas WNBA tryout camp -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WILL THERE BE A BOOK ABOUT THIS?

If you are unfamiliar with the Dallas Wings WNBA franchise...don't beat yourself up over it. It is their first year of existence in the Lone Star state. Previously known as the Tulsa Shock and the Detroit Shock prior to that...they've re-landed in a community that has taken a great initial interest in them and provides a in-state rival now for San Antonio.

The highly contested move (at least for the Tulsa folks) comes after they had their first over .500 record in the Tulsa portion of the franchise history in 2015. They also made the WNBA playoffs. An injury to Diggins slowed them down considerably...but they were showing signs of finally being competitive.

They'll play in the beautiful University of Texas-Arlington College Park Center and former Louisville point guard Jude Schimmel will attend the tryouts beginning April 23rd.

Schimmel faces a tough test in trying to make a roster that has Skylar Diggins and Odyssey Sims at starting guards with back ups Brianna Kiesel and Brittany Hrynko.

A WNBA squad will normally bring in 18-20 players to compete for the 10-11 spots available on the roster...the majority of these either from last year's team or with previous WNBA or European experience.

Schimmel was a four year player for UofL and complied these stats as a Card:

Career Rankings
10th in assists with 392
7th in steals with 221
Tied for 9th in games played with 135
Tied for 1st in NCAA Tournament games played with 15

A tough challenge for Shoni's sister...no doubt. One wonders if there might be a possible book in the future on the experience?

We're big favorites of banana pudding and banana bread here at CARDINAL COUPLE and if you've never had an Elvis-style banana and peanut butter sandwich, you're missing out.

We're going bananas here at the Couple today. We hope your Wednesday a"peels" to you as well...

When it comes to theft -- Angel was the gang leader

McCoughtry wanted the ball and knew how to get it.

As we enter the "slow period" of UofL women's sports...we promised that we'd look into some of the greater moments of Louisville women's sports.

Today, we'll look at a thief.

Angel McCoughtry is a very nice person off the court. Dedicated to helping others, promoting her WNBA team...the Atlanta Dream and her UofL Cardinals. On the court....she was a criminal.

#35 led Louisville in steals each of the four years she played at Louisville (2005-2009) . Only one other Card can claim that...Sara Nord (2000-2004). When you look at the top three season totals for steals...the numbers show McCoughtry at 164, 148 and 112. As a non-starting freshman, she had 57 to lead the squad.

The Cards have had some pretty accomplished "pilfer artist" over the past several seasons. Bria Smith and Jude Schimmel were good at creating the possession change with takeaways. They had 74 each in the 2014-15 season. Shoni and Tia Gibbs weren't too bad either at getting the ball away from the opponent.

Gibbs had 95 in the 2010-2011 season. Shoni had 262 in her career...good for fourth all-time on the Louisville list. Bria ended up her career right behind Shoni with 257.

They all paled in comparison to Angel, though. 481 total steals in her four years. 178 more than her closest competitor.

What was it that made McCoughtry so good at the takeaway? A combination of concentration, quickness, anticipation and hustle. At 6'1" she was dominant over smaller guards and lightning quick against taller front-liners. Watch any McCoughtry game from her time at Louisville. She is all over the court. Perpetual energy.

It truly would have been fun to somehow watch Angel play against and guard Angel.

The All-Time Larceny List at Louisville:

THE DON -- Angel McCoughtrey
MOB BOSS -- Shoni Schimmel
UNDERBOSS -- Sara Nord
CAPO -- Bria Smith
CONSIGNIORE -- Stephanie Edwards
LIEUTENANTS -- Tia Gibbs, Jude Schimmel, Jackie Spencer.

This e-mail from Kenny D:

Paulie, this team has to have Angel, Shoni, Jazz, Dez and Sharon Bellamy on it. Off the bench I bring Reid, Nord and Owens.

Let us know what you think. I'll be ready to announce my team in a couple of days. Still thinking...

Atlanta Dream Classic and WNBA COMES TO LOUISVILLE -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

SUN, MYSTICS WIN IN ATLANTA DREAM CLASSIC.

6347 fans watched the two WNBA pre-season games in the KFC YUM! Center on a Memorial Day Weekend Saturday night...Louisville's first-ever WNBA games in the Atlanta Dream Classic.

Fans of the Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream didn't get what they hoped for...the Connecticut Sun rallying from an early deficit to knock off the Fever 76-68 and Washington taking control early against a depleted Atlanta roster to defeat the Dream 79-55.

WNBA Basketball is a bit different than the college ball normally played in the KFC YUM! Center. The games are four quarters instead of two halves and the music decibel level rivaled that which was being played down River Road at the Abbey Road on the River festival.

Mix music is the soup du jour during a WNBA game and it goes on non-stop, even when the teams are on the court playing. A bit different...and geared toward the younger generation. The jury is still out (at least for me) on that...

We actually tried to get a short interview with the D.J. playing the tunes but were rather brusquely informed by his "handler" that every second of his time was booked and that would be impossible.

(I hope he didn't have to pee while at work...or maybe they had that built in for him also...)

CONNECTICUT SUN 76 - INDIANA FEVER 68

The first game of the night looked to be a blow-out in the making early on...and it looked like Indiana was going to deliver the romp. The Fever held a 22-8 lead over the sun after Natalie Achonwa (yes she played...with a heavily wrapped knee) hit a hook shot with 2:01 left in the quarter.

Connecticut closed the quarter strong with a 11-4 run, though...Chelsea Gray scoring five points and the Sun continued to cut into the Fever lead in the second quarter by scoring the first eight points and taking a 27-26 lead on a Kelsey Griffin three with 6:34 until half.

The Fever regained their composure, though...and regained the lead...going up 35-31 after Achonwa hit a free throw with 2:23 left in the second quarter. They got a steal and Achonwa layup at the buzzer to go in up at the half 41-36.

Jeanette Pohlen led the way for Indiana in the first twenty minutes with nine points and Achonwa added seven. Chelsea Gray led the Sun with nine points and Kelsey Griffin contributed eight.

The Fever held the lead throughout the third period until a Kelsey Bone "and 1" gave the Sun a 48-47 lead. Layshia Clarendon's jumper gave Indiana a 57-54 edge with 14 seconds and it looked to be the final goal of the quarter but Gray hit a jumper at the buzzer to get Anne Donovan's team within one with 10 minutes to play.

The fourth quarter belonged to Connecticut. They regained the lead on a Bone layup to start the fourth quarter and a Bone put-back gave them a three point lead at 62-59. The Fever stayed within striking distance...a Pohlen jumper made it 67-65 Sun with 5:48 to go.

Connecticut went on a 8-0 run over the next five minutes...aided by the strong board play of Elizabeth Williams...and led 75-65 until Shenise Johnson hit a three for the Dream with 37 seconds left. Kayla Pederson added a free throw for Connecticut with a second left for the final 76-68 score.

The Fever no doubt missed Tamika Catchings and Shevonte Zellous who did not play...but Connecticut was without Chiney Ogwumike..so the star power was missing on both squads. Shenise Johnson tried to keep Indiana in the contest with seven of the Fever's 11 final quarter points...but the Sun shone brightly in the paint in the fourth to get the win.

WASHINGTON MYSTICS 79 - ATLANTA DREAM 55

Missing starters were key in the second game...Atlanta leaving starters from 2014 Tiffany Hayes, Erika De Souza and Sancho Lyttle at home in the nightcap.

The crowd greeted former Cards and current Dream starters Angel McCoughtry and Shoni Schimmel with a rousing welcome and the two seemed fired-up to be back in front of the Louisville fanbase.

The ball just wouldn't go in the basket for Atlanta early on.

They fell behind the former UConn Huskies trio of Stefanie Dolson (who was rocking purplish-blue hair), Kalana Greene and Bria Hartley. The three had 18 of Washington's 24 first quarter points. The Dream went 4 for 17 in the first ten minutes and managed just 10 points...Angel and Shoni going a combined 0 for 7.

It got worse for the Dream in the second quarter as Washington continued to get easy layups and solid three point shooting from Hartley. Angel broke loose in the second quarter...scoring 10 of Atlanta's 13 points...but the Mystics doubled the score on the Dream at the half 46-23. Shoni was making some nice passes and defensive stops but was still scoreless.

McCoughtry played just 1:11 in the third quarter and Schimmel logged over nine minutes...finally getting on the board with a desperation three as the shot clock expired with 4:12 left in the quarter.

The basket drew the biggest cheer of the evening.

Speaking of cheers, I'm not sure I'm a real big fan of an event's PA announcer repeatedly chanting "Defense" or "Let's Go Dream" into the microphone during action. Isn't that why there are cheerleaders and spirit groups? Once again, small beer really...but it got annoying. I'm sure a number of local high schools would have gladly lent their cheer squads or dance teams to the event.

"Sho-time" hit another three at the 2:45 mark, elicting another loud crowd response but Atlanta wasn't cutting into the Mystic lead and was trailing 67-40 with one quarter remaining. It was Shoni's final basket of the evening.

The teams played fairly evenly in the final stanza. Angel sat while Shoni logged all ten minutes in the fourth...picking up two more assists for a team high six. The Dream actually outscored the Mystics in the final ten minutes 14-12 to lose 79-55.

Atlanta got inspiring play from Sequoia Holmes and Ify Ibekwe off the bench but missed the 60% of their starter base that wasn't there. Also disappointing was that Washington's Kara Lawson was there but did not play.

We wanted to see if she would try interviewing her teammates and opponents while running up and down the court. The "headband cam" and accompanying audio feed is coming in the WNBA...we just know it !

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Both Schimmel and McCoughtry met with the media following the game. Both were thrilled to be back in front of the Louisville fan base...Angel playing in the KFC YUM! Center for the first time and almost wistfully commenting that it would have been nice to spend four years in the arena.
Angel had a bag of ice strapped to her knee when they entered the media room but professed that nothing was wrong...it was just "getting old" aches and pains.
Other tidbits from the post game chat:
- Shoni hasn't read Jude's book yet...being quite busy with "playing hoops, sleeping and getting up and doing it all over again the next day..." but marvels that her sister was able to do it at the age of 21. She also hopes they can travel Europe playing ball together after the WNBA season is over.
- Angel still avidly follows UofL WBB...noting that she would be "watching at 3 a.m. in Turkey" to support the team.
- When asked if playing against three Washington players that formerly played for Geno Auriemma reminded her of the old days of facing the Huskies...Shoni jokingly made a vague reference to officiating and burst out laughing with Angel and the media.
All in all, a great evening of the WNBA in the YUM! 6347 for a pre-season exhibition double-header isn't bad at all. Whether or not a franchise could do that consistently here without the benefit of the two greatest players in Louisville WBB history on their roster is debatable. I'd go, how about you?
It was fun to have women's hoops back and it just whetted our appetite for the 2015-16 UofL WBB season.
Meanwhile, a level up from Denny Crum Court, the lines were long to meet Jude Schimmel and buy an autographed copy of her DREAMCATCHER book.
A short conversation with co-author Rick Laemmle revealed they brought 300 books and ran out of them -- necessitating a hasty trip to go pick up and bring back more.
Jude, ever-smiling and greeting each person in line...Shoni showing she is ready to assume the starting point-guard role for Atlanta. It seems the Schimmel's "held court" on two levels of the KFC YUM! Center Saturday evening and it was a pleasure and treat to see them  "back in the house" they helped build and fill.
Jude Book Signing Sunday night a huge hit...Lacrosse beats Notre Dame -- Monday Cardinal Couple
LONG LINES, PLENTY OF SMILES FOR JUDE SIGNING
Jude Schimmel signed her book Dreamcatcher Sunday night at the Cardinal hall of Fame Cafe and the fans came out in droves for the chance to buy a copy, have her sign it and pose for pictures.
Crowds were already starting to form when Sonja and I arrived at the restaurant around 5:45 p.m. for media interviews...before the signings started.
When the autographs began shortly before 6:30 p.m., the line stretched from down the hallway leading to the Coach's Room to the entrance of the restaurant. When we left after the interview and a bite to eat (around 7:45 p.m.) the line was still stretched back to the door.
We got to talk to the author for a few minutes before the signing began. We'll play the full interview on our weekly CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO SHOW on Saturday...but here are some of the highlights:
-- On the crowd response:  "I'm really excited to see the people waiting for see me so I can discuss things and the book with them. One thing I have learned in four years here is that the people of Louisville are passionate about their sports, especially women's basketball. I'm grateful for having been a part of it"
-- When the idea first struck her to write a book:  "In the seventh grade is when I think it first occurred to me about writing a book but I never thought it would become a reality. Last fall, though, I started it and it started becoming a reality."
-- The motivation behind the book: "I wanted people to learn...through what I've been through in my life and hopefully go out there and be successful in their lives."
Jude's book is available at her website:
www.judeschimmel.com
There is also a link to the site on the Right Side of THE Site here at Cardinal Couple.
We heard that Jeff Walz was scheduled to appear with Jude also...but was with a basketball recruit. He hadn't arrived by the time we left but we did see Myisha Hines-Allen headed to the signing room.
(A special thanks to Charlie Springer -- UofL Card Game -- for his photos!!)
RAINS WASH OUT SOFTBALL
Softball cancelled on Sunday for Pearsall's Pulveriers. The rains came again to Oxford, MS and the Ole Miss softball diamond.  They head to Lexington Tuesday to battle the Cats...
Louisville got in just one game of the scheduled three...it's going to throw a wrench into the April Contest here at Cardinal Couple...what was 11 games now looks like eight...barring any other weather cancellations.
LAX KNOCKS OFF IRISH 10-8
Louisville Lacrosse traveled to South Bend for the final regular season game of the season and pulled off a 10-8 win over the ACC opponent Sunday afternoon.
This one went back and forth in the first half...the Cards tied it at 3-3 when Kaylin Morissette scored on a free position goal. ND ran off two straight but Louisville responded with three straight scores, two from Hannah Koloski, and Cortnee Daley gave the Cards a 6-5 lead..which looked like it might be the half-time margin. The Irish capitalized with 16 seconds left in the period to tie it.
The second half belonged to Louisville.
Daley scored 105 seconds into action. Koloski picked up her third goal three minutes later. A defensive battle ensued until Morissette picked up her second goal with 11:31 remaining. It was 9-6 Cards, and the Irish had been held scoreless.
ND did cut the into the lead with ten minutes remaining but Daley picked up her fourth goal to make it 10-7 a minute later. Notre Dame managed to cut it to two with 8:43 left...but that concluded the scoring and Louisville picked up their 10th. win of the season with ball control and defense the rest of the way.
The Cards are the #7 seed in the ACC Tournament and will face #2 seed Duke Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
Sunday Cardinal Couple
Quick Hits
Golf in the ACCs
The golf team finished 7th in the ACC championships.  Katie Mitchell fired a 1-under par 3rd round to come in 2-over for the competition, earning a top-20 finish.  Emily Haas also had a good competition, finishing out at 3-over in a tie for 21st position.  Katie Petrino and Louise Oxner finished in ties for 36th and 39th with 9-over and 10-over results respectively.
The Golf team now awaits the NCAA Championships field announcement on the 27th.  The NCAA takes place over the course of four different Regional Competitions, and then a Final Championship.
Baseball
Baseball is outside of our normal wheelhouse, but the finish to the nightcap of the double-header last night was just too good not to mention.  To set the scene, its the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, bases loaded.  The Cards had scored earlier in the inning on a wild pitch to tie the score at 5 apiece.  With a low pitch, Corey Ray, who was on 3rd, got a great jump on the ball and stole home to win the game.
Head coach Dan McDonnell has never been afraid to make gutsy calls in games, and this one will rank right up there.  I'll wager you'll be able to catch the video of this one on ESPN in the Top 10 plays of the day.  The Cards won the first game of yesterday's double-header in convincing fashion, 10-1.
Rowing in Clemson
The rowing team is in Clemson for the Clemson Invitational, a competition they have competed in regularly for several years.  The team crossed the finish line for victory twice and also claimed three runner-up finishes.
The victories came from the second varsity eight crew and the varsity four crew, with the victories being by 4 and 5 second winning margins respectively.
The Clemson Invitation continues today.
Softball Down South
Softball lost what turned out to be the series opener against Ole Miss 5-2.  After Friday's game was cancelled due to rain and soggy field conditions, the Cards took on their first of two consecutive SEC foes.
Maryssa Becker started in the circle and got dinged for the loss on two runs in the first two innings, with Shelby McCombs in relief taking three runs in five innings pitched.
The bright spot of the game for the Cards was in the 5th inning, when Brittany Sims got a single and Kayla Soles lined a shot over center to bring them both home.  That was the 3rd home run on the season for Soles.
The Cards would threaten in the 7th with Whitney Arion reaching, and Brittany Duncan getting hit by a pitch, but they couldn't complete the deed, and took the loss.
They will continue action against Ole Miss at 2 o'clock today.
Dreamcatcher Book Signing
Don't forget about Jude Schimmel's book signing at the Cardinal Hall of Fame Cafe at 2745 Crittenden Drive at 6:30.
Jude has been on quite a publicity tour, at least locally, with visits to several TV stations and calls in to a number of radio shows as well.  She also took a trip to Washington D.C. to visit the White House as Nike N7 ambassador.
With a Bachelor's in Sociology...during which she won the Elite 89 award at the 2013 Final Four...and finishing up her Master's in Sports Administration, there's no word in what, specifically, Jude will pursue for a career, but whatever it is, we're pretty certain that she will be extremely successful at it.
Softball rained out...More on Jude...and a bit of Football -- Saturday Cardinal Couple
Rains Came...Softball cancelled
Louisville Softball's game against Ole Miss Friday night was cancelled due to heavy rains in Oxford, MS. It's trending...the Cards final game in the FSU series at Ulmer also got cancelled due to rain.
April showers bring May flowers, right? All over our nation.
The Cards will put on the gloves and grab the bats today to try and get one in against the SEC squad.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Jude Schimmel: A personal view
Jude Schimmel will be autographing (and selling) her book  Dreamcatcher Sunday evening at the Cardinal Hall of Fame cafe Sunday Night from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Cardinal Couple will be there to catch some words from Jude and witness the gala event. It should be quite fun.
I was thinking about the Jude experience here at UofL and will share with you some of my memories about that.
She first came on my radar when we found out about Jeff Walz's interest in a flamboyant guard out of Oregon. Shoni. We saw that Jude was also on her sister's team and was an emerging star. You know the story. Shoni arrived, endeared herself to the Louisville WBB fan base as a freshman and Jude committed to the Cards the following year.
While Shoni was wowing Cardinal fans that freshman year, I followed Jude's senior year in high school. She was putting up  incredible numbers. I chanced to ask Coach Walz after she committed to Louisville if she was part of "a package deal"...brought in because of Shoni's decision to come to the 'Ville'...
Walz was emphatic in his answer. He made it quite clear that Jude's game could stand alone on it's own and she, too, would make a name for herself as a Cardinal.
I trust in Coach's decisions. We soon found out it was correct.
As a freshman, she came in off the bench and became part of our "attack Yorkie" nomenclature here at CARDINAL COUPLE. She and Shelby Harper would enter games and display a ferocious tenacious performance. Diminutive but determined. Small but scintillating.
Jude continued to provide a spark in her sophomore and
junior years. Smart, intelligent on the court. I loved seeing her and Shoni on the court together. I yearned to know what those sister conversations consisted of when they stood there together at mid-court during free throws or time stoppages. Jude had her setbacks. A nagging ankle problem. She overcame the adversity.
Shoni graduated and moved on. Jude had a season to go. Would she start next to Bria Smith? How would the incoming, talented freshman class affect her playing time?
Jude continued to grow and prosper.  She was the brains, the heart and the leader on the floor. Those senior year contributions were incredible. Once again in her life, she showed that she was just fine without her sister by her side on the court.
Jude goes into the next phase of her life now. I'm confident that she'll prosper and continue to grow. It will be fun to see where she is 5...10...20 years from now.
Her story is already prolific and it has so many more chapters. One of many from a family full of love, commitment and care. Making her way, on her terms and
in her own fashion. I maybe envy her a bit...with so much ahead and so much time to accomplish. Glamour Magazine, book-writing, meeting with the President...she just may be the pro-typical Renaissance woman.
These days, I live the one-day-contract philosophy. It will be fun to see her make her mark on our world. One day at a time.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
FOOTBALL? LOOKING FINE!
We don't stray too far from our commitment from UofL women's sports here at the "Couple"...but I did attend the Spring UofL Football game last night. I searched for current WBBers that may have attended but didn't run across any. Admittedly, it wasn't an intensive search...but I did run into a former WBB baller and chatted her up at halftime in the concourse.
One thing that kept coming up in our discourse (name being with-held by request) was her still-strong love for this university and the women's basketball program. The chat was pleasurable. She was aware of our site here but admitted that she followed it very sporadically and mostly during hoops season. Gotta love the continued love for WBB at Louisville that she and many other former "hardwooders" still express.
Oh yeah...about the scrimmage. The Red team was ahead 30-0 at the half. QB Reggie Bonnafon and the first team looking strong. I heard later that the final score was 59-0.
Petrino must be pleased. I left shortly after the half. Things appeared to be in good hands.
No WBB Cards drafted for WNBA -- Lacrosse Falls to Syracuse--More on Jude...Friday Cardinal Couple
WNB(not)...Sara, Bria, Jude go undrafted
The hopes were good while they lasted...with (3) Louisville WBB players being mentioned at some sites as third round potential picks...but none of the 2014-15 seniors on the team heard their names called in the three rounds of the WNBA Draft Thursday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
As expected, Jewell Loyd, Amanda Zahui B and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis were the top three picks, but as the third round wore on during the ESPN3 coverage...it started to become clear that the Cards had the possibility of being shut out this year.
When Arizona State guard Promise Amukamora (a candidate for Worldwide's all-name team) was named as the Phoenix Mercury's third round pick...all 36 slots had been filled and there was no Asia Taylor nor Antonita Slaughter pleasant surprises like in 2014.
It happens. Sara, Bria and Jude are all considering the possibility of playing overseas and we hope they get the shot.
For now...though...there will be only Angel, Asia and Shoni to follow in the WNBA.
Who would have figured Dayton would end up with two picks (Ally Malott and Andrea Hoover) and foes that the Cards handled whenever they played them (Sam Logic, Reshawnda Gray and Brittany Boyd) would get selected and no Cards got picked?
It is what it is. The 2018 and 2019 WNBA Draft could be chalk full of Cards getting their names announced.
Speaking of announcing, the coverage really dropped off after it switched from ESPN 2 to ESPN 3. Yes, the Lauren Hill tribute was great and a tear-jerker...but did we really need to see players try to say "Peter Piper picked a piece of Carolyn Peck" or Rebecca Lobo discuss shot blocking with Kiah Stokes when picks were being announced?
LACROSSE TAKES ANOTHER LOSS
Louisville Lacrosse ended the home slate of the 2015 season with a 16-8 loss to Syracuse Thursday afternoon at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.
A game that seemed to follow a common thread consistant with the LAX Cards of late:
-Cards stay close early
-Opponent goes on big run
-Louisville loses by almost double digits
It was 4-4 midway in the first session when the Orange went to work...scoring 10 of the next 11 goals to lead 14-5 halfway through the second half.
There is no doubt the LAX Cards miss Faye Brust. But...the defense seems to have slipped a notch as well. It is the best competition in college Lacrosse, of course...but the un-checked runs and romps by Virginia, North Carolina and now Syracuse aren't pretty to watch unless you're wearing Carolina Blue or Syracuse Orange. The team seems to have slipped a few notches since nearly knocking off #3 Boston College over a month ago.
Cortnee Daley scored thrice for the Cards and Hannah Koloski and Kelli Gerding twice.
The Cards end the conference and regular season at Notre Dame Sunday. The Cards are 9-6 overall and 1-5 in ACC play. The Irish are 9-6 as well...3-3 in conference and own a victory over Syracuse in overtime.
The Cards have lost three out of their last four. Despite the recent tailspin...one has to go back to the talent level that exists in the ACC and how good it is. In a few aspects, this current UofL Lacrosse team is as good as the undefeated AAC squad from last year but the competition curve has gone way up. Losing Brust was a mortal wound to the team. She was the leading scorer and a team captain. Her swagger is missed.
Maybe that coaches' pre-season poll that picked Louisville to finish seventh wasn't so far off after all...
JUDE SCHIMMEL HAS BEEN CHANGED BY CHANGE
(we continue the lead up to the Louisville stop for the Jude Schimmel book singing on Sunday with this unique look into "22"):
 “I want to positively impact other Native
 Americans so that they can live the
life they want to achieve and fulfill the
 dreams that they have,” said Schimmel.
“I went through and witnessed similar
 struggles that many Native Americans go
through and want to share that with others.
 I want my story to show that there
can be great success found both on the
reservation and off the reservation.”
 “Dreamcatcher” shares Schimmel’s story of growing up on a reservation, and
what it took to succeed in the “real world” outside of reservation life. Jude
shares many of the lessons her parents instilled in her, as well as many she
learned along the way. She presents these in a unique way, using some of her
favorite inspirational quotes and personal stories. She also makes it a priority
to help everyone gain a better understanding of Native Americans, and the
oppression that still exists amongst these special people today.
Jude Schimmel is expected to continue
 her basketball career in the
professional ranks this summer and
is projected to be drafted in the upcoming
WNBA Draft in mid-April. Jude Schimmel
 is the younger sister of Shoni Schimmel -
the eighth overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream and the
first rookie to ever be the MVP of the
 WNBA All-Star game. The 2015 season will
be her second in the league.
 The Mission, Ore., native was a member of Louisville’s winningest class in
program history, posting 112 career victories, including four 20-win seasons and
one 30-win campaign (33-5 in 2013-14). Schimmel reached four NCAA Tournaments,
including an appearance in the Final Four (2012-13), Elite Eight (2013-14), and
NCAA Sweet 16 (2014-15). The previous school record of 107 career wins was held
by her sister, Shoni Schimmel’s graduating class.
 Having been embraced by the Louisville, Ky.,
 community while playing for the
Louisville Cardinals and an instant draw to
 Native American fans throughout the
country, Schimmel has used her platform as
 a collegiate student-athlete to share
her story of drive and determination.
 She finished her career at Louisville ranked in the top 10 in program history
in career assists while piling up over 700
 career points in 135 games, including
15 in the NCAA Tournament.
 Alongside her sister, the duo may be best known on the court for a historic
run to the NCAA Championship game in 2013 that included a shocking 82-81 upset
of top-ranked Baylor and Brittney Griner in the Sweet 16 and win over
traditional power Tennessee in the Elite 8.
Recently named a Nike N7 Ambassador, Schimmel visited the
White House in early April as she continues to work towards sharing the struggles of the Native American community and find ways to improve opportunity for Native American youth in the 566 federally recognized tribes in 35 states nationwide in such areas as education and
 healthcare. Overall, there are over 2.1 million Native
Americans under the age of 24 in the nation, with over 32 percent
 under the age of 18 living in poverty and nearly 30 percent lacking
health insurance coverage.
Suicide, the second leading cause of death for Native Americans
 aged 15 to 24 is 2.5 times more likely among these individuals
than the national average.
Educational opportunities are also a struggle for the Native American community
with just 50 percent graduating from high school and 13.3% earning an
undergraduate degree.
 Jude will also be starting a foundation with part of the proceeds going
towards supporting Native American causes.
