#4 Field Hockey at #2 UNC -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Gooooooood Friday morning readers!

It's going to be a gorgeous weekend in Louisville!  The annual festivals have begun so you know where you'll find me. Louder Than Life is in town, staged over at the Fair and Exposition Center

I did get the opportunity to hop over to Yum! for the rivalry volleyball match earlier this week.  Wow what a show out for the Cards and the city on national television.   It was a clean sweep for the Cards this year, a contrast to the matches against that blue team down the road have been in recent meetings.   So I'm glad that the city got the opportunity to see this team since the arena on campus has less available seating.  I'm sure the next 2 at Yum! will also get a great turnout!   Jeff had a great recap yesterday regarding the few moments where the Cards looked a little lost but they often took a time out and got their feet back under them.   The Cards were too powerful for the Cats to handle. And, we prefer it that way.  Enjoy this picture of me and my gang at the match the other night.

I like to play a fun game with Jared called 'find the short chick and her friends in the red and black ensambles'..
He is very good at it!

Field Hockey

To keep the carousel of big match ups going for the Cards this week, the FH program is traveling down to Chapel Hill for a mid-day match matchup with the #2 TarHeels.

This one is available on the ACCN Extra at 3:00 pm

The last time the two met was almost exactly a year ago where UNC came to Trager won 3-0 on 9/16/23 and outshot the Cards 14-9 and UofL had 9 saves and 6 corners.

HERE are the highlights from last year's game.

Paulie did a great post-match chat with now-retired UNC head Field Hockey coach Karen Shelton that UNC wanted, so he sent it to them. As far as he could tell, they never used it.

UNC recently broke their undefeated streak dating back to last season when they lost to Iowa 3-2 in OT on 8/27/2023. All-American and everything else ex-Tar Heel player Erin Matson took over the coaching duties this year. Michigan, Penn, Princeton and Old Dominion are the squads UNC has defeated.

Louisville enters the weekend wih a 6-0 record and #4  ranking in the nation. The Cards Merlijn van der Vegt stands second in the ACC with a 0.83 goals against average and .800 save percentage. The Cardinals have outscored opponents 12-5 through the first of six matches this season. Eight different players have tallied goals with Aimee Plumb leading the way with three - two of them being game-winners.

Try to get out and enjoy something this weekend and don't forget the sunscreen!!

As Always,
Go Cards
