LOUISVILLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL -- #5 TERPS IN TOWN TONIGHT...CARTER DONE FOR YEAR -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

MARYLAND SECOND LEADING SCORING TEAM IN NATION

They may be turtles...but they sure ain't slow.

The #5 Maryland Terrapin women's basketball squad (6-0) comes to the KFC YUM! Center tonight to face the seventh-ranked 6-1 Louisville Cardinals WBB gals at 7 p.m. A great college basketball contest in the nation's premier facility.

Welcome, December...right?

UM will be the Cards second straight top 5 opponent and the first of seven December home games for the Cards. Maryland enters The Bucket off of a 79-69 win over Washington St. on Saturday. A close game that was eventually decided at the foul stripe...where the Terps went 27-38 and WSU 7-21.

Don't get confused by this but Brionna Jones (no, not Louisville's Brianna Jones) had a 20-point, 20-rebound double-double against the Cougars. They played this one in Vegas, as part of the South Point Shootout. The 6'3" center is not the only Jones on the roster for Brenda Frese (like Louisville's 1 and 1A entry of Brianna and Jazmine) Stephanie Jones is a 6'2" freshman on the roster for the Terrapins...the difference here is that these two are sisters.

Keeping up with the Joneses. (I'm tempted to yell out toward the court 'Miss Jones?' during warm ups and see how many of them look over at me...

Speaking of Jones stuff...see if you remember this classic 1972 groove by Billy Paul about Mrs. Jones.

LINK: ME AND MRS. JONES

The Maryland squad features plenty of others to keep up with beside the Jones. Kaila Charles and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough are proven threats from last year and Destiny Slocum is doing big things as a freshman guard for Frese...13.2 ppg and an impressive 14-29 from deep water.

For the Cards, it'll be a test to see if they can contain a Terrapin squad averaging 95 points a game and that is out-rebounding their opponents by 20 a contest. Louisville is no stranger to the scoreboard with 80.3 points an outing and is forcing foes into 23.4 turnovers a night.

Disruption would seem to be one of the keys tonight for UofL. Taking Maryland out of what they do and forcing them to play Cardinal basketball. A quick start from Asia Durr would be most beneficial for the Cards and keeping Myisha Hines-Allen on the court and away from early fouls. Rebounding will play an essential role in tonight's fray as well...the Cards must go to both baskets with authority and take advantage of all second chance opportunities. If Mariya Moore can continue her outside success and the Cards can get steady and successful point guard play from Briahanna Jackson and Taylor Johnson...Louisville's chances for a win increase greatly.

Prepare for a track meet tonight in the KFC YUM! Center. If you can't attend...the superlative work of Nick Curran and AJ will be available on Cards Radio 790 WKRD A.M. and also on the ACC Network Extra with "Big Game" Don Russell and former UofL WBB head coach Sara White providing the details.

This will be the first regular season meeting between the two programs. They've matched up three times in the NCAA Tournament. Last time out, Shoni Schimmel's heroic effort fell just short in a 76-73 loss in the 2014 NCAA Elite Eight action at the KFC YUM! Center. The Cards fell to UM 72-68 in the 2012 NCAA Second Round on the Terps home court but defeated them in the 2009 Elite Eight 77-60.

We'll be back later tonight/early this morning with the recap.

NAISMITH TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST

Myisha Hines-Allen, Mariya Moore and Asia Durr have been named to the prestigious list. They're three of 50 WBB DI womens' players to receive the honor...the list will be narrowed to 30 around mid-season.

Durr leads the Cards in scoring with 18.7 per contest. Moore follows at 12.9 a game and Hines-Allen carries a 8.9 ppg a night.

Louisville is one of two ACC teams that had three players named to the list...Notre Dame being the other. UConn leads the way with four players on the list. Louisville's foe tonight has two...Maryland's Walker-Kimbrough and Jones getting the nod.

Add the Wade Watch list honors for the M&M girls, too. December starting out pretty good for them so far, right?

CARTER NAMED AS NOMINEE TO WBCA ALLSTATE GOOD WORKS TEAM

WBB junior Arica Carter is one of 63 student-athletes nominated for the award that honors representation in the areas of community service and leadership among xxtheir peers.

Carter has a 3.7 GPA at UofL and has actively participated in St. Jude's Walk, wheelchair basketball and Americans with Disabilities as a sponsor and mentor.

We're proud of the smiling server...who also assisted Paulie on WBB Media Day as his assistant-interviewer with the players.

Way to go, A.C!!! Representing the true embodiment of what a student-athlete is all about.

Sadly, Carter's playing season is done for the year and she'll undergo surgery for the bad groin (an injury similar to Asia Durr's last year) and apply for a red-shirt.

  1. Cards have to control the tempo. They don't want a track meet with Maryland. I hope the three-point shooting is there tonight for UofL.

    1. Agree. I haven't been a fan of ULWBB for as long as some on this blog and I wasn't around in 2009 when we last beat them in the tourney. Personally I'm sick of getting beat by Maryland & Frese. I'm also tired of our ballers getting pushed around by them physically in the process of losing. So our kids need to step up and push back.

Time to BUCK UP. I'm predicting a warrior performance by MHA tonight. She'll throw that subpar SC game over her shoulder and move on. If we can beat Maryland and UK during the season and do well enough in the ACC to make the tourney with a semi-decent seed the sky is the limit for this crew, but we've gotta get serious and get a little blood in the eye.

Congrats to AC. I've only seen one ULWBB game in person out here in Phoenix against Grand Canyon. The game wasn't particularly memorable but in watching the warm ups I remember that in the pre-game Jude and AC stayed out doing one on ones after the rest of the team went in for final prep. It was clear that Jude was mentoring the freshman AC and it was pretty cool. It's great to see that AC is carrying on the ULWBB tradition of being a good person that happens to be a really good baller. Plus she's a Long Beach Poly baller so there's that.

  2. Wow, Paulie. Thanks for dragging that oldie out. Memories of slow dancing at the high school junior prom to that song with a beautiful young lass I was no-way prepared to handle at the age of 17. LOL.

    1. I went to school with a young gal with the last name of Jones. I bet she heard people singing that song around her for years. She finally married a Kammendorfer. Good times.

  3. Here's the key tonight. The Cards HAVE TO play four quarters. No time off, no half-speed. No backing down and show a little aggressiveness. Louisville needs a big crowd in the YUM! tonight. I'm driving in for it. I hope plenty of Cards fans join me.

Mrs. Jones? One of my first-ever bosses was a mean-spirited, gruff old lady named Mrs. Jones. Sure, I was a slacker and had no intention of making a career out of being a sales clerk, but she made an early impression on me that there is a right and wrong way to handle employees. "Why is the toy aisle messy?" (Maybe because there are kids in the store?)

    3. Ha, ha...We didn't "do" the Iroquois Park scene but there was this this great lake with a beautiful waterfall and excellent overlook between Fern Creek and Mt. Washington that got a lot of weekend play. Our background was Skynyrd, Eagles and Allman Bros. And, for some strange reason...Captain Beyond.

    6. Funny how the mind works. I dug out their first CD about a week ago and was jamming to it. Dancing Madly Backward on a Sea of Air. LOLOL. As far as Billy Paul goes...his 1973 work...War of The Gods...is very, very trippy. Almost a Eric Burden/War type effort.....OK, where was I?

Oh, yeah. Play hard tonight Cards WBB.

    7. Yah that Grand Canyon game Grand Canyon played well and had a guard who had a real nice game against us. That's the game CJW refused the post game radio show and ripped the players instead behind closed doors. It worked. They proceeded to go out to Cal Berkeley and play a great game just before Christmas break. Saw that one in person and had a blast. One of Sara's many good games. Jude just started to really handle the ball like a true point should that game. Prior to that KY made her look very bad her last game against them. She went onto play well the rest of her Sr year.

  5. Cards WBB needs this win tonight. Cards fans need to pack the House tonight. I can't be there but I hope if you can get there you'll show up. I'll be following on ACC Network Extra. I hate missing this one but a non-sports fan of mine decided to wed this weekend and she lives in Denver. I will be back for UK. Oh, yes. The Deb Factor

    1. I hope not but I think we may lose about 1,000 in attendance due to the SC performance and how it looked more than anything. Hope it's a great crowd though. Walz said on radio 8,000 sold for MD and 10,000 sold for KY and that was couple days ago.

      Delete
    2. It's like Walz said the fans want to know if THIS TEAM can beat a top 10 program. We will find out. If not lets at least beat a top 25 program in KY. Walz tells it like it is.

    3. That's one thing you'll always get out of Walz -- the plain, true and simple. If you do that...you never have to remember something you might have made up when questioned.

Of course, the CARDINAL COUPLE credo is...never admit to anything, have legal counsel a phone call away and don't rat your 'associates' out.

      Good advice

  6. I think it all boils down to rebounding - tonight and against every good team on the schedule. So far Cards are not very good on the boards and that's too much to overcome against top competition.

I did not get to listen to Walz's radio show this week but I heard that Carter will have surgery and be redshirted? Same injury that Durr had.

    1. That is correct on Arica, Mike. We're all hoping for a full and complete recovery for her here at CARDINAL COUPLE...as I'm sure all of you are.

    2. Arica being out is good for her and us. She is going to recover fully and be even better for two more years. She would have received limited playing time this year (10-12 min a game). Gives her a chance to have a major impact her final two years

  7. Wow no AC, a speedy recovery to AC come back stronger.
