Fall schedules starting to surface -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FALL SPORTS RELEASING SCHEDULES

As I spoke with head Louisville women's soccer coach Karen Ferguson Dayes yesterday...it dawned upon me that we'll be covering actual live women's sports in less than two months. If you haven't heard Paulie's interview with her, go to Wednesday's column and listen to it. Incredibly great stuff from KFD.

With that in mind, we'll see you again in August...as I've decided to take the next 60 days off and cover horse racing.

Just kidding.

We know now who, where and when women's soccer, field hockey and volleyball will be facing and we'll be posting those schedules soon on the Right Side of the Site...along with all the other links and ennui we have over there.

Women's soccer kicks off the home stand for the three sports with an exhibition game against Morehead State on Saturday, August 13th. Field Hockey gets into the act five days later when Ohio University comes to town on Aug.18th.
Volleyball stages the Red and Black scrimmage on Aug. 20th.

All three squads have some rebuilding to do after last season. Volleyball graduated Katie George, Erin Fairs and Roxanne McVey. With a couple of other players leaving the program, it'll be interesting to see who is on the front line for the VolleyCards when they get the season started. Two things we're sure of...sophomore Molly Sauer will be back at libero and Anne Kordes will probably break a few clipboards during the season. It's a good thing she doesn't carry a WhiteBoard around with her at matches.

Karen Ferguson Dayes was also depleted by the graduation and transfer scenarios...but she brings in a very talented freshman class and returns stars from last year in Inger Katrine Bjerke, Taylor Bucklin and Alison Price. Although speedster Bella Habuda has left the program, the Cards have an impressive list of forwards on the roster and coming in that will compete for playing time. Coach also likes to make impromptu appearances in the soccer press box early in games to see the action up high. We're going to suggest she brings pizza or sandwiches this year when she drops in.

For head field hockey coach Justine Sowry, it has to be comforting to know that international star Ayeshia McFerran returns at goalkeeper. Also returning are leading scorers from last season in Nicole Woods and Stephanie Byrne. With the graduation of Elisa "Chile" Garcia, Vic Stratton and Katherine Gwynne-Wood, there are holes to fill...but Sowry has signed a great class, including New Zealander Whena Munn...who no doubt will find her name on one of Worldwide's all-name teams somewhere.

Hang in there, fans. Get the lawn manicured, hedges trimmed and driveways and sidewalks edged in the meantime. Get those summer vacations in. Fire up the grills every opportunity you get. We're two months out before we start discussing things with players and you start re-familiarizing yourselves with seats, parking and rosters.

And toss on a couple of Italian Sausages for Paulie while we're waiting...

  1. Just saw that Matt Andrews is leaving Louisville for a job with THE Ohio State University. I'll miss him. I actually felt that he did a better job than Jim Kelch. Wonder who will replace him? They've already announced his replacement on the Bats' radio broadcasts.
