Louisville Women's Basketball pulls off the improbable...85-78 win over MSU

ASIA DURR'S 20 HELPS CARDS DOWN MSU

The Louisville women's basketball team survived and surprised in East Lansing, Michigan Thursday night against #19 Michigan State and looked like the preseason predicted top ten team for most of the contest in a 85-78 topsy-turvy win over Spartie.

Early on, the Cards looked unstoppable. Roaring out to an early double digit lead...Louisville was canning threes and looking like the team we expected to see this season.

Asia Durr...the subject of much speculation concerning a summer groin injury that limited her playing time this season and had her potentially on a redshirt...knocked down two first half three and Louisville led 45-32 at halftime....leading by as much as 15 in the first twenty.

It was thrilling, exciting and almost unbelievable...after watching this squad's first five games of the season.

Spartie came back. Led by Aerial Powers, they chipped away at the Cards lead and cut the lead to one in the 4th period. I looked at Sonja and told her it was a brave effort but another case of being unable to finish.

I proudly report I was wrong.

Maybe the tide has turned here. Maybe Walz has everyone on-board the train and the season starts now. All I'll say is that congratulations are in order for a big win on the road against a top 20 team and kudos on not folding when it looked like MSU was about to take over. And two incredible efforts from two girls...one with a knee injury and the other that wasn't expected to play. I'll never believe a injury report out of this program again...

Continue the improvement, Cards. You made the first "Get on the train" stop a successful one. Keep rolling down the tracks.

  1. GO CARDS! Hmm, maybe hanging on coach's every word during the post game comments doesn't make you an expert. "Asia Durr out for the season." GO CARDS!

    1. We don't claim to be experts. When a coach says on a broadcast that he's "99% sure she's done for the year"...sure, we're going to conclude that she's done for the year. No one could be more happier than us (except Asia, her family, teammates..).that she played and did well.

    2. Exactly Paulie. He wanted to rest her and at least let her play on ESPN. Then shut her down if she struggled physically

    3. You're spot on, Paulie. Are we to not believe what a coach says? Whoever you are anonymous it looks like you are taking a vendetta against Paulie. I would suggest he's forgotten more about Louisville women's basketball than you'll ever learn.

    4. No vendetta. Just commented in the tone that Paulie used in his reply to a comment regarding not having heard about Durr being out for the season. "Then you obviously haven't heard any of Coach Walz's pre or post game comments in Florida". Sorry about the memory loss Paulie.

  2. I didn't get to hear last night's post-game show. What did Walz say about Durr? She sure came up limping after that last foul.

    1. MSU's Agee barreled over her with 4.6 left and she took a tumble to the floor. May have landed on her knee. Durr walked off under her own power after the game. Another one of those "game time decisions" pending on her i guess for Valpo.

  3. Can someone provide a link to last night's postgame presser where maybe Asia's condition was more fully explained.
Am i understanding that until the MRI she was fearful that the pain meant that she was injuring the surgical area but instead is pain that she is going to have to deal with until the area more fully stretches?

Does her severe limp at end of game reflect something different going on beyond neededing to ve stretched?

    1. They sent the results to the doctor that did the hernia surgery in Philadelphia. Based on whatever he told them, they deduced that the pain was part of the healing process, I surmise...and they came to a conclusion to play her and see how she did. The limping at the end of the game is something we're trying to find out more about.

  4. Durr was the difference even not at 100%. Walton acted like she had a purpose when she got the ball. I didn't think she could help with points until she showed up in this game.
Powers of Mich State has a nice overall game. She can hit 3's, lead the break and finish and be a stealth bomber on D with timely steals. We took it to them and they looked like us by not being able to convert opportunities until the 4 th quarter.

    1. Cortnee looked like a different player last night. Hope she keeps it up. The drinking game suggested in yesterday's post ended up having to be everytime Lobo gushed about Powers. I went through several adult beverages! She is a reaaly good player though.

    2. LOL. I was at an establishment and we couldn't hear the volume because they had dedicated the audio to the Packers v. Lions game. They kept flashing the UConn v Notre Dame promo, though...so I hoisted whenever I saw that. The Stewart and Lobo silliness at halftime was pure schlock at its finest.

    3. Couldn't have said it better. ESPN is in love with the team in their backyard and will do whatever it takes to cover them. No UConn women's game today? Let's do some ridiculous interview with one of the players.

    4. Can't blame ESPN for loving UConn because they make the quality of WBB watchable

  5. Goodin-Rogers leaves Kentucky. Four gone in six weeks. She and Epps best friends.

  6. Good game. Lots of contributors offensively, and Durr is certainly a difference maker. Also, this was the best defensive effort I have seen this year. Counted at least 3 turnovers that the Cards made but prevented the Spartans from scoring immediately off of them. And not knowing anything about them, just by watching the game, one would have thought the Powers was the leading scorer, not the Jankoska kid. Must have followed a Walz gameplan to stop her. Powers is a player, hope her injury, like Durrs, isn't serious.

  7. Anyone else notice that Syd never got out of her warmups last night. Anyone know what is up with that?

  8. “That’s the Asia Durr we recruited,” Walz told Matt Andrews on his Learfield Sports postgame radio program. “I’ve been trying to tell people she hasn’t been herself. And I’ve got some that doubted her, and doubted us, like, ‘I don’t see it.’ You know what? She’s hurt. And she finally got good news from the doctor. The surgery looks great. It’s just a long healing process. She’s going to have to play with some pain. And that’s what she needed. And she went out there and she did exactly what she could do. I mean, she’s a difference maker.”

  9. My only concern is that there has been many a players life messed up by sports Dr's who have proclaimed that a player technically could play but not necessarily whether that they should play.
