  1. I'm a veteran and I assume some other readers of this blog may be also. I don't speak for anyone but myself but I suggest you stick to UL sports.

If you've decided to make this a political blog maybe you shouldn't just throw up a youtube link supporting self-declared Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders and his views without showing the opposing view. Those of us more familiar with Mr. Sanders are well aware of his recent political moves concerning the VA and the ongoing government / union mismanagement and refusal to take responsibility for the care of veterans. I have an ex-wife that also thought throwing a blank check at problems would fix them. Didn't work out for her and won't work for our veterans either without accountability. I'm doing everyone a favor here and not going into the details.

    1. I am sure your comments and viewpoints are welcome, as always, Burn Brother. As are mine. We've turned a blind eye to my fellow veterans for way too long. Those of us who have served this country should receive the support, treatment and respect they deserve. Many died in defense of the way of life we now enjoy. Accountability? Homeless veterans living in the streets of our nation's capitol? I will not stand by and watch my brothers who have served get disrespected.

      Happy Memorial Day.

    3. Right. I ran into a lot of socialists when I served. Not. The socialists were sitting on deferments in college or ran to Canada when those who honorably served were getting their asses shot off. Stuff it.

When you get a chance check out Bernie Sander's service record. Can't find it? No Kidding.

I doubt very much that the Tool that just posted this has ever served anyone but themselves.

  2. Burn...we are hardly a political site and don't plan on changing our main focus and reason to be here, which is UofL women's sports. Sonja and I served our country faithfully and would do it again in a heartbeat.

We're the lucky ones, I guess. No need for extensive governmental support or delibilitating medical conditions that resulted from service or combat.

As a nation, though...the plight of some of our fellow defenders of our way of life has gone unnoticed and needs addressing. I won't go into details, this is a sports site, as you have pointed out...but I'm ashamed to have Mitch McConnell as a fellow Kentuckiana...ashamed that those who served aren't getting the problems they have solved...and suggest that necessary funds be allocated to doing this.

Not so much a statement supporting Bernie Sanders but a statement that says...please take care of our vets. And Ditch Mitch.

    1. I wasn’t going to put this up but since my socialist friend recently decide to go on record here you are

      **************************************

No one can logically or emotionally argue against helping vets. That's of course why politicians love talking about it so much. VA spending is through the roof already. My point was that if disingenuous incompetent government bureaucrats continue to be in charge of taking care of our vets there is zero chance it will improve. Ever. They are not smart or honest enough to make the changes necessary for real progress, regardless of the funding levels.

Here are some facts for those who can stomach them:

"Barack Obama ran in 2007-8 on failures at the VA, promising more resources and better management. In comparison to that final Bush budget — don’t forget that Obama signed the FY2009 budget in March 2009 with the omnibus spending bill after a Democrat-controlled Congress refused to deal with Bush — VA spending has risen dramatically as well. The annual budget rose 78% in six budget cycles, with double-digit increases in four of the six years — while Defense spending was flat. No other Cabinet agency had a larger budget increase by percentage during Obama’s tenure. The closest was Agriculture (64%), followed by State (59%, which tends to discredit the canard about the Benghazi failure being caused by a lack of resources). Only HHS had a larger annual budget increase in terms of dollars spent, but it amounts to a 37% increase in spending from the FY2008 baseline. The amount of increase in the VA’s budget in the Obama era, $65.9 billion, exceeds the entire VA budget in the FY2004 budget."

Throwing more money at a broken system is like putting air in a tire with a hole in it. We can certainly agree that most veterans that have a choice or the resources won't come within five miles of the VA for treatment of any sort. That is of course with the exception of the retired lifers and officers who have always received preferential treatment from the VA. Of course most of the service members that really need care are first term enlisted people of limited means, a contingent that the VA has never been overly concerned about.

      I'm done on this.

    2. I think we all can agree that veterans deserve benefits equal to that of any congressman or senator. We served, we responed and some of us did it at a time when it wasn't a popular thing to do. Are the words...'a nation owes you its gratitude' ...hollow in nature?

When a waiter brings your order, you say "thank you". When a vet helps keep order, you cut his medical services. Where's the rationale in that?

Sure, that entree or sandwich may have been mighty tasty...but remember who took up arms in your defense to ensure you could eat it in a democracy and in safety...

Hitler's ideology still exists in certain circles. The defenders of freedom and human rights ensure it can never become dominant again.

  3. Bernie Sanders rocks! Way to go.
    Shame on these Republicrats

  4. A recent news report indicated that the VA had a surplus budget this year, not spending millions of dollars in a system that is abusing veterans. Why throw millions more at a system that is in obvious disrepair. Democrats never question anything.
